A resigned young man and a fearful boy with supernatural abilities inflict utter destruction everywhere they go as they attempt to survive in a world out to destroy them.

Thomas' every move is tracked and controlled by the Interior Security Compartment, until an unexpected visitor, even more powerful than he, arrives on his doorstep.

And when fearful, young Trent is taken from his family and placed into a community with others like him, he dreams the horrors of his past will finally be left behind.

Both trapped in a spooked and panicked nation charged to eliminate their kind, Thomas and Trent are forced to harness the unknown depths of their unique power for any hope of survival. They must expand their awareness, confront who they really are, and face their ultimate oppressors in the struggle for power, by any means necessary.

"It's a page turner, an interesting world that's easy to picture, with endearing characters and high tension. It's funny, it's heartbreaking. By the time I got to the end, there was much to consider, and I just wanted to read it all over again." —Editor's Reflection on Story

really amazing debut novel!!

admittedly, sci-fi-leaning things are not my choice genre, but after ~80 pages and getting more acquainted with the characters and the world, I could not put this book down. as the story evolved and new discoveries were made, I found myself turning page after page to find out what happened next.

I really appreciated the modern writing style - it was different but definitely worked. I also liked the non-linear storytelling and how it kept me on my toes. I loved the exploration of themes surrounding power, evil vs. good, and what humanity means. would definitely recommend!!

(also that Trent chapter has my heart ugh)

This was such a fast paced and exciting book, it was hard for me to put down. The concept was really cool and interesting and I liked how it had some sci-fi(?)/supernatural elements but the world itself was basically a fictional version of the current, real world.

The writing style and tone are very modern, and the way it maintained the mystery/intrigue throughout the story was very well done, delivering satisfying (and devasting) twists and realizations. Aside from just being an exciting page-turner though, it asks big questions about morality, power, politics, and had me questioning how easily I would give up on somebody (trying not to spoil but this was one of the more powerful aspects imo).

"When we were young, we had a premonition of what our life would become. As we grow older, we find those visions, one at a time, murdered in an indefinite winter." If you like this writing style, new novelist Isaiah Scott is for you!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dominion in a House -- a fast-paced, part sci-fi, part political narrative that explores some of the deeper questions about humanity, and what it means to be good, or evil. There were so many twists and turns at the end, and I honestly couldn't put down the book in the last 100 pages. Already excited to read Scott's other book, A Man Called Somebody!

The setting and world of this book are so captivating that I want to read it over and over again!

In the beginning, the intrigue and mystique around the concept of power drew me into the story, and all the dramatic twists and turns kept me engrossed. Not to mention it constantly had me laughing out loud.

This book also asks really important questions and considers really interesting themes like agency vs obedience, the worship of power, the irony of destruction for survival, the monstrosity of humanity, and the humanity of monstrosity.

Unserious part of the review…

My favorite characters are probably Lorr and Trent…
I love Lorr’s lore - the way she carefully dresses to match those she’s visiting, the way she orders practically everything on the menu just because she can, the way she says “I want to get going now.” But Trent really has my whole heart. I just want to give him the biggest hug. And Carly is pretty cool too.

My least favorite character is Jordan. Cannot stand that guy. Anyway…

Highly recommend this read!!!

Intriguing book. Normally I like historical fiction and completely avoid sci fi; however, I enjoyed how Isaiah Scott creatively combines sci fi, military, politics, moral dilemma and great characterization into a suspenseful, fast paced novel that captivated my attention. I continued thinking about the characters and their interactions long after I stopped reading. As the wife of a military officer I could appreciate the driving forces and emotions of some characters. I found myself comparing events, people, ideologies, etc to world events. I really wished I had read the book as part of a book club since it would bring about a great discussion. It was both entertaining and thought provoking. Isaiah Scott’s writing style is unique and refreshing. I enjoyed the bits of poetry as well. I look forward to reading his other book, A Man Called Somebody.

“What on Earth are we supposed to do with people like Kaiden Holtby? People who may have gotten away with monstrous deeds, but by no possible means of human effort could they ever hope to atone for their actions. If one day we woke up and found ourselves to be monsters and we knew that there was no hope of escaping the monstrosity we lived in? Where would our path forward be?”

A well-written novel with a surprising amount of layers for a book coming from the action/superpower/suspense genre.

Big things that I liked about this novel:
1) the non-typical plot. The reader could make an assumption (like I did) that the book's plot would fall under the typical superhero/action tropes of our times. This would be a mistake. I appreciated the unpredictability of this book, how it kept me on my toes throughout the entirety of the plot. Ultimately, it made for a more satisfying experience.
2) the dialogue. I thought the dialogue was well written between charactersIt came off natural, easily readable, and allowed for interpretation and nuance for developing tension, relationships, etc. Definitely helped me become more attached to certain characters.
