From USA Today bestselling author Jeneane O'Riley comes the next in a series of deliciously dark and whimsical standalone romances.

She brought him back from death.

Now he is the one thing she cannot survive losing.

In 1795, in a shadowed city of the Holy Roman Empire, Victoria Frankenstein is brilliant enough to rival any scientist, yet condemned to silence in a world that forbids women their power.

When her miracle surgeon father falls gravely ill, grief drives her to a heretical act. Beneath candlelight and prayers long abandoned, Victoria stitches life from death and calls a man back into cold flesh and waiting lungs.

What rises from her table is not a monster.

Bound to her by blood, breath, and the terrible intimacy of creation, he belongs to her in ways no living man ever could—and he knows it. He watches her. Learns her. Wants her with a hunger that borders on worship, and a possessiveness that should frighten her.

As desire coils into obsession, Victoria must face the truth she has always being wanted by her creation is a power she cannot control. His devotion is absolute, consuming, and beautiful, and in an empire that burns women for reaching beyond their place, loving him may be the most dangerous act of all.

Because she did not simply give him life. She made herself his reason for living.

And love, once stitched into existence, does not let go.

This is the second installment in Jeaneane O’Riley’s Dark Manor Chronicles, although this can absolutely be read as a standalone. Having just read her “A Secret in the Garden” and being surprised on my enjoyment of it, I was looking forward to this reading. We all know I’m a sucker for a retelling and that Halloween is my favorite, so this was a definite immediate want to read for me, as it is a twist on “Frankenstein”.
This novel follows Victoria Frankenstein, daughter of Frankenstein and the reimagined awakening of The Creature, which she delightfully names Inno.
This was definitely an interesting take on the story. Readers should note that this far more gory and creepy than O’Riley’s previous installment (though that didn’t bother me too much).
There were times when there was not much dialogue, which made this one drag for me. It was around 20%-50% that dragged so much for me. I almost put it down, but decided to keep going. There were times I did enjoy the descriptions of Victoria’s dressed and the scene at the ball. But there were many times I felt like a lot of ideas were repeated (i.e. her loneliness, her not being able to be a doctor as a female, etc.) and many times I was like, “OK. I get it. Let’s move on”.
The relationship between Victoria and Inno was just a little too out there for me to latch onto. However, I really appreciated Victoria’s friendship with Helena and Victoria’s love for her family. And, despite the weirdness of their relationship, I was pleased with the ending.
Overall, this was not my favorite, and I struggled to push through it, but I think fans of dark, Gothic romance will probably enjoy.

Thank you Netgalley & publisher for this ARC.

When I heard about Her Creation with my love for Frankenstein & adaptations on this I knew I wanted to read this book.
Victoria is our FMC and creator of life from death - add in fem rage & obsession and you have yourself an engaging book I was hooked on from go.
Set in the 1700s it’s gothic, it’s brooding,
& Dark. You’ll love this if you love gothic romance, yearning, obsessive MMC and strong FMC.
The grief & loneliness in this resonated with me while I myself going through grief.
This is told via journal entries & logbooks which I did struggle with getting into especially at the beginning but once I was used to it the story flowed. This is slow paced esp the middle but Inno & his devotion was yearning done well.
I love re tellings that are done well and I think this one was especially with switching it up from a female POV.
Definitely add to cart when it releases in August 2026 🥀

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC! I am voluntarily leaving an honest review!

Did you get an instant crush on Jacob Elordi’s take on the Creature? Did you think “I want more of this man.” Yea, me too. This book may help or it could….not. Buckle up, my English degree is begging to be utilized and I have so much to say!

The Good: the author clearly knows the source material and/or the new film version very well and adds some new takes. The pacing lines up with the film (which, depending on your perspective could be awesome or maybe not for you). Instead of a male narrator we have a female one, and Victoria is semi our female version of Victor - flaws and all. Get ready to look your own internalized misogyny in the mirror because she is as flawed and un nurturing as Victor. We truly have to sit with Victoria with the mistreatment of women in the day and her revenge is great. The first 10% of this book took off so wonderfully fast, I was so invested and so excited. There are lines sprinkled in here of some absolutely gorgeous writing that I highlighted and took notes on. The potential was SO strong, and again I was SO excited, so it hurts to say the rest…

The maybe not as good but of course up to personal interpretation: while the pacing mirrored the movie, I think some things could have been handled differently.. Scenes that felt necessary for growth and deeper relationship development were merely an afterthought or described but not shown on page, while side characters/storylines took over, to the point I felt the back cover was almost misleading. Certain phrases, conversations etc were VERY repetitive or contradictory unfortunately dragged the story instead of propelling it forward, and led to a lot of telling and not showing. While examining obsession is the key theme, leading to the doubt and back and forth, the repetition made me struggle to feel as invested as I was early on.

Last, the semi vague trigger warnings. I do not think they were spelled out as plainly as they should have been and needed to be more specific. Please mind them and take care of yourself!

Conclusion: an incredibly strong beginning and some absolutely beautiful writing in parts, sadly led to a dragging and repetitive middle of the book, landing at a 3⭐️ Thank you again for the opportunity to read this!

Her Creation • Jeneane O’Riley
Dark Manor Chronicles #2

One phrase: Frankenstein, but make it feminine rage and obsession 🖤⚡

A female Frankenstein creating a man who becomes completely obsessed with her?

Say less. I was seated immediately.

Her Creation is gothic, darkly romantic, eerie, and beautifully consuming. Set in the late 1700s, this story follows Victoria Frankenstein, a brilliant woman trapped in a world that refuses to let women hold power, ambition, or scientific greatness without punishment.

So naturally, she does the most dangerous thing possible.

She creates life from death.

And what rises from her table is not a monster.

He is Inno. Her creation. Her miracle. Her consequence. And the way he watches her, studies her, worships her, and slowly becomes devoted to her is haunting in the best possible way.

The atmosphere in this book is everything. Candlelight. Forbidden science. Grief. Obsession. A world waiting to punish a woman for reaching too far. It feels gothic and intimate, with that constant edge of danger humming beneath every interaction.

What I loved most was the tension between creation and control. Victoria gave him life, but she cannot control what he becomes. She made him, but his devotion belongs to him. And the question of whether his possessiveness should terrify her or tempt her made the romance feel sharp, sensual, and deliciously unsettling.

This is not a soft love story. It is devotion stitched together with blood, breath, longing, and consequence.

And honestly? I ate it up.

✨ Tropes and vibes:
⚡ female Frankenstein
🖤 gothic romance
🧪 forbidden science
🕯 candlelit atmosphere
😮‍💨 obsessive MMC
💀 creation brought to life
🔥 slow burn tension
🌙 dark whimsical romance
👀 possessive devotion
💔 grief and longing
🩸 monster romance vibes
👑 powerful FMC

📚 Read this if you like:
Frankenstein retellings, gothic romance, obsessive devotion, morally complicated love stories, brilliant women defying society, and romance that feels haunting, dangerous, and beautifully unhinged.

This was eerie, sensual, atmospheric, and perfect for a dark little weekend read.

Her Creation (Dark Manor Chronicles, #2) by Jeneane O'Riley
Jeneane O'Riley
Her Creation by Jeneane O'Riley is a beautifully dark blend of historical fantasy, romance, and Gothic atmosphere that completely drew me in from the very first page.

One of my favorite aspects of the novel was its 1795 setting. I don't think I've ever read a fantasy romance set during that time period, and it gave the story a fresh and unique feel. The historical backdrop enriched the world-building and heightened the stakes, especially as Victoria Frankenstein navigates a society that refuses to recognize a woman's intellect or ambition.

After her renowned surgeon father falls gravely ill, Victoria commits the ultimate act of defiance against both science and religion—bringing a man back from the dead. What she creates is not the monster others might expect, but a man whose existence is inextricably tied to hers. Inno's devotion quickly becomes all-consuming as admiration turns into obsession, forcing Victoria to confront the complicated emotions growing between creator and creation.

Jeneane O'Riley masterfully balances romance, tension, and emotion throughout the novel. The relationship between Victoria and Inno is a slow burn filled with longing, obsession, and emotional intensity. Inno's unwavering fixation on Victoria creates a fascinating dynamic, while Victoria struggles to determine whether what she feels is fear, responsibility, curiosity, or something far deeper. Their relationship is dark, complex, and utterly captivating.

Overall, Her Creation is a consuming and emotionally charged read with a haunting Gothic atmosphere and a romance that lingers long after the final page. I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy dark fantasy, Gothic romance, morally complex characters, and slow-burn relationships filled with obsession and emotional depth.

Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I'd like to start this by saying that I love Jeneane O'Riley and her books. I've read almost her entire back catalogue, with the exception of one title, but this one just did not hit for me.

Her Creation is a Frankenstein reimagining, but this time the creator of Frankenstein's monster is a lonely, abused young woman who is set on being able to resurrect someone after the loss of her mother (and later her father). She spends months with this body in a cool room in the basement of the manor inhabited by her and her father. Victoria replaces almost all of her monster's body, including his brain and all of his vital organs. The rebuilding of the monster and his subsequent resurrection weren't even the least believable parts of this book. Nope, that honor is reserved for how the monster (Inno) manages to save Victoria once she's arrested for being a woman who is practicing medicine. How would no one realize that he switched Victoria with the man who raped her several times at the beginning and middle of this book? Victoria was malnourished and small, while the man she was swapped with was a rich baron, who had every luxury available and would have been noticeably different in body type and clothing.

Then there's the matter of Inno going off on a murder spree when Victoria lies and tells him she could never love and be with him because he's not really a man, but rather a monster she created. He even goes so far as to kill her innocent best friend, the only non-familial person in the book to treat Victoria with any respect, for no damn reason. And how does Victoria respond to this horrific event??? She basically jumps into sex in a grave with Inno. (That's not an exaggeration.)

I just wish this book would have had better flow and had the more ridiculously unbelievable events explained and fleshed out better, instead of being flown through, leaving us as the readers to be asking how in the hell did that even happen?

Her Creation is a perfect weekend read if you’re in a mood for a gothic romance that is a retelling of Frankenstein set in late 1700s, but instead of a male Frankenstein, you got a female scientist named Victoria Frankenstein that creates a man back to life that is obsessed with her. I was so intrigued by this story and the fact we got a female Frankenstein!? I was all here for it!

“He would dance with her one day. Even if the world burned down around them, he would dance in its flames with her.”

The creation and love in here between our main characters felt powerful and dangerous. The slow burn tension was absolutely everything as it felt sharp but the gothic atmosphere brings this story to life. You can really feel the eerie and devotion out of the pages with the romance in this story and I think it fits so perfectly.

“He was beautiful and wonderful and everything she could have ever wanted. If only loving him wouldn’t ruin her—wouldn’t go against her father’s wishes.”

The way Inno studies her, watches her, and how utterly obsessed he becomes with Victoria is a beautiful hauntingly feeling that I truly enjoyed because it feels a bit suspenseful. Because you’re waiting for the moment how Victoria is going to handle this possessiveness. Is she going to be feared or begin to fall in love with something she created?

“You continue to call me a monster,” he said quietly, “but I was born only of the materials you chose. If I am grotesque, it is because you built me from pieces you deemed unworthy.”

Thank you so much Bloom Books for the chance to read this galley now over the weekend! It was truly a great read that fit perfectly for me and I cannot wait to read more from Jeneane 🖤

*****Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and Jeneane O'Riley for providing me with an ARC copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Frankenstein has always been one of the books that affected me the most. It is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful stories about loneliness ever written. Her Creation is a retelling of that story, and in many ways, it answers the question: what if Victor Frankenstein had been a woman?

I have to be honest, during the first half of the book, I seriously considered DNFing it several times. It was dark, grotesque, and deeply uncomfortable. Not only in the scenes where Victoria works with her father, but also in the atmosphere of her life, her emotions, and the oppressive world she is trapped in. The setting felt incredibly stifling and bleak. But I also think that was exactly what the author wanted the reader to feel. This book is meant to disturb you.

After the halfway point, the story became much more compelling for me. The emotions between Inno and Victoria, the sense of entrapment, the loneliness, and the suffocating pressure that comes from being unseen and misunderstood were all written in an incredibly intense way. There were many moments when I wanted to put the book down, but I also needed to know how it would end, so I kept reading.

There were times when I was very angry with Victoria, but at the same time, I understood her. That contradiction made her feel more human and more tragic.

I would not recommend going into this book expecting a traditional romance. Yes, it is a love story, but it is an uncomfortable romance. It is dark, unsettling, and emotionally heavy. If you decide to read it, I think it is important to know that beforehand.

When I saw an ARC available for Her Creation by Jeneane O’Riley, I knew I wanted to give it a try. I’ve read another series by this author, and while there were moments in those books that gave me pause, I ultimately enjoyed the characters and their stories. Going into this one, I had an open mind and fairly high expectations.

I was immediately drawn in by the writing style and opening scenes. A woman aboard a ship, exploring a new land, creates an intriguing start. However, as the story shifts and reveals the true narrative underneath, it took me a little while to become fully invested again.

This is both a love story and a fantasy, and both aspects lean into darker themes. As someone who wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from a Frankenstein retelling, I found the premise compelling. The atmosphere is ominous, twisted, romantic, and easy to follow. At times, however, the pacing felt uneven, and there were moments where the story seemed to settle rather than build, causing some of the momentum to fade.

My favorite part of the book was the relationships. Victoria’s bond with her father adds emotional depth from the beginning, and the connections that develop throughout the story kept me engaged. The MMC’s devotion to Victoria will definitely appeal to readers who enjoy an obsessive, all-consuming romance, and it provided some of my favorite moments in the book.

Overall, I think Her Creation will be a strong hit for the right readers, particularly those looking for a dark romantic fantasy with gothic elements and a fresh take on a classic tale.

Thank you @netgalley @read_bloom for the opportunity to read and review this book as an arc. This is my honest opinion.

✨️My Thoughts✨️
A gothic eerie retelling of Frankenstein with some twists, yes please! So happy I signed up for this ARC.
I love the twists and turns the author put in the storyline. My favorite twist is we have a female scientist thats learning from her father in the late 1700s. Very forbidden during this time period. I love how determined Victoria was to learn despite society demands of what is proper and right. Another favorite thing is, I love the chemistry behind the 2 main characters. Its consuming, forbidden, powerful, and full of devotion. Such a slow burn too! Our main characters learn quite a bit from each other and discover themselves too in the process. I also love how this is a story within a story. 😍 If you give Her Creation a chance, you'll see what I mean. I thought it was a nice touch with log entries. The very last thing I want to point out is, the amount of raw emotions that were exposed.. there were many tender moments you dont want to miss.

✨️Some favorite quotes✨️

"I realized how rare it was to find love at all, and how important it was to take a chance on that love."

“I did not ask to be resurrected. You pulled me from death. You gave me breath , thought, and feeling.”

“I have never been an advocate of allegiance.."

“Mad and broken I may be, but that does not discount my love for you. I know you better than anyone— your life force flows through my veins.”

I highly recommend giving this book a try. 🫶

-- thank you to netgalley and bloom for an arc copy of this story --

this book was probably my most anticipated release of the year. Jeneane is one of my auto buy authors and I had such high expectations for this book.....

and even then this book absolutely blew me away. I am a different person after reading this book.

Victoria is such a flawed character. I absolutely love the way she was written... showing all her struggles and stubbornness, while still having such a big heart for those she cared about in her life. Even after all the loss in her life, and the anticipation of more, she found comfort in a place she shouldn't have. As a woman (of the times) she risked her life, and her family to follow her dreams.... until everything started to go wrong all at once....

And then there's HIM. the creation. HER CREATION. She was his god. His whole world. She was the blood in his veins, the reason his heart beat, his reason for living. And even while he was still a corpse in the basement they had forged a strong connection that even after tragedy, near death, and fear - she couldn't stay away from the only man she ever wanted.

this book is very much a slow SLOWWWWWW burn. it is deep, it is heavy, and it is absolute perfection. there is no doubt that this story will be one that I will forever recommend. This book will be sitting on my heart for a long while and will definitely be one of the best books ive read this year.... if not one ive ever read. I couldn't recommend this more.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for providing me with an advance listening copy of this audiobook. All opinions are my own.

The atmosphere is one of the book’s strongest elements. It’s dark, eerie, and filled with the melancholy you’d expect from Gothic fiction. The story explores themes of obsession, ambition, loneliness, and what it truly means to create life. I also appreciated the emotional depth given to Victoria and the moral questions woven throughout the narrative.

The audiobook narration was engaging and helped bring the journal-style storytelling to life. While the pacing was slow at times—especially through the middle—it suited the reflective tone of the novel, and the narrator kept me invested even during quieter moments.

If I had one criticism, it’s that some sections felt repetitive, and I found myself wanting the plot to move forward a little faster. However, the ending was satisfying and made the journey worthwhile.

Overall, Her Creation is a haunting Gothic retelling that will appeal to readers who enjoy atmospheric historical fiction, slow-burn romance, and dark reinterpretations of literary classics. I’ll definitely be interested in reading more from this author.

Respectfully… everyone in this book needed a therapist, a hug,or jail. Sometimes all three.lmao.
This was one of those reads that had me constantly asking myself, “am i loving this…or am I just deeply invested in the chaos?” lol

As a Frankenstein retelling, i genuinely think this was incredibly well done. The gothic atmosphere was deliciously eerie, the moral grayness kept me questioning everyone, the feminine rage was accurate, & the author was NOT afraid to lean into the unsettling, obsessive, nature of the story. It absolutely captured the spirit of the classic while carving out its own identity.

That said…the pacing & I had a bit of a toxic relationship. We’d be cruising along, I’d be completely hooked & then it would suddenly slam on the brakes before taking off again. It wasn’t enough to make me stop reading, OBVIOUSLY, but it was bothersome enough to stick out to me.

This is a 1700’s era read, filled with gothic, unsettling, extremely morally messy, feminine revenge vibes & overall i really enjoyed the premise of the creator being a woman while the creation was absolutely OBSESSED with her.

Thank you Netgalley, Jeneane, & sourcebooks audio for my arc copy in exchange for my honest review.

Beautiful prose and atmospheric gothic themes, but paced a bit too slow for me.

When I picked up Her Creation, I had quite high expectations. As an avid lover of the gothic genre, the premise of a darker, atmospheric retelling immediately drew me in.
I must say that I absolutely loved the prose. The writing style is beautiful, and the author does a fantastic job of creating an ominous, twisted, and romantic atmosphere that perfectly fits the gothic vibe. The opening scenes were incredibly intriguing and set a very promising stage.
However, as the narrative progressed, I struggled to stay fully invested. Despite my deep appreciation for gothic fiction and its typically slower build, the pacing here felt somewhat uneven. There were several moments where the story seemed to stall rather than build momentum, making it hard for me to maintain my interest throughout the middle sections.
That being said, the relationships and the emotional depth—especially the obsessive, all-consuming romance—were definitely highlights. If you enjoy a beautifully written, slow-burn gothic fantasy and don't mind a slower pacing, this is definitely worth checking out.

What happens when love turns you into a monster?

In this gothic retelling, we are following Victoria Frankenstein and her quest to quietly learn everything about the human body from her surgeon father, society permitting. After the loss of her mother, grief follows Victoria like a shadow, impacting every facet of her life and igniting a passion for conquering resurrection. When her father falls ill, she is consumed with perfecting the process to resurrect the corpse he acquired for her experiment, which she has begun to have an unhealthy relationship with. What follows is a fascinatingly dark and grotesque relationship with death as her creation is brought to life.

Throughout this story we are confronted with many uncomfortable themes that beg the questions of what it means to love, what it means to be a monster, what it means to grieve, and what lengths we may be willing to go for love. This was broody, forbidden, at times shocking, and I couldn’t look away.

Thank you to NetGalley for a digital ARC of this book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Audio and Bloom Books for the ALC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

The beginning of the story is VERY Mary Shelly Frankenstein coded. I almost assumed that it was just a gender bender rewrite, but boy was my initial assumption wrong. I absolutely loved this book and how Victoria Frankenstein was her own person as well as her father. The creation of the “monster” had more emotion and really gave Lady Elizabeth Harlander and the creature vibes. Romanticizing death, revitalizing, and the fragility of life. I love Victoria, the FMC, and how she grows throughout the story. Loss is a huge part of the story and she does not handle it well. She stumbles through the world trying to appease her father and society while not wanting to be part of it. I love the redactions, it feels more personal that parts of the story were too intimate or too important to tell us as the reader.

Zara does a phenomenal job bringing the story to life and it was like watching a netflix special in my head.

Her Creation by Jeneane O’Riley is the second stand-alone book in her Dark Manor Chronicles series. After reading the first stand-alone book I was impatiently waiting for the release of Her Creation. This gothic retelling of Frankenstein switches the role of creator to a woman living in the 1700s. This novel made me feel so much. I felt the quiet feminine rage of being discounted simply because of being born a woman. The debilitating grief, loneliness, and sadness of the main characters really resonated. The love between the creature and creator was endearing, obsessive, and all together utterly devastating. The writing in this book was beautiful and poetic. I would definitely recommend this book to others looking for an emotional, gut-wrenching story that will leave you cheering for a morally black character. Inno and Victoria each obtained what they both desperately needed: one another.

This book completely pulled me in from the very first page🤯

Victoria is determined to make her mark in a world that constantly underestimates her as a woman in science and medicine. Told through journal entries and logbooks, we follow her journey from a young girl afraid of losing her father to a creator willing to challenge life and death itself.

Her fear of loss leads to the creation of Inno🥹, and I was instantly invested. Watching their relationship unfold was equal parts beautiful and heartbreaking. Inno was more than her creation—he became her protector, her constant, and eventually the love of her life. His devotion was obsessive, intense, and impossible to look away from.

The Baron and his son were absolutely vile😒, making their fate incredibly satisfying. While I don't usually gravitate toward retellings, this one completely won me over. Haunting, atmospheric, and captivating, it's a story that lingered long after I finished the final page.🫶🏼

Female Dr. Frankenstein? Who knew this was something that I would want to read and not only that, thoroughly enjoy it! This was such an interesting book and I really fell into this world. The world was described so that you really feel like you are there with the characters and the imagery was great. The relationship between Victoria and her father was also wonderful and I really loved their moments together. I did feel like this was a tad longer than it needed to be with some repetitiveness and the middle was a little slower than I like but I'm glad I pushed through because the story was wonderful. I am so glad some just desserts were delivered to the baron and his son because man, were they obnoxious.

This book is marked as the second in a series, but this can be read as a standalone novel.

While this took me a bit to get into (mostly a me problem both mentally and the fact that dates make my head spin—I'm not a historical girly) once I got the timeline and such in my brain sorted out, I fell in loveeee. Jeneane warns us in the beginning that this one's a little uncomfy at times. Not only with outside abuse, but our girl Victoria mayyyyy get in a little over her head with her monster.

But oh my goodness, does Frankenstein's monster love her with his whole heart. I loved watching them fall in love, seeing their story unfold, and watching these lives come full circle. This was such a trip and when it all came together I was like ohhhh holy crapppp for real? This was brilliantly written and beautifully told and I had so much fun.

Made only better by the incredible Zara Hampton-Brown as our narrator. She brought these characters to life in such a beautiful way and I loved this listen. Thank you so much to Sourcebooks Audio for the advanced copy!

As someone who has been obsessed with Jeneane O’Rileys writing from day one, I can confidently say, this is her best work to date! The amount of grief and heart she managed to pack into a standalone novel is beyond me! This is also her darkest work, and I was fearful that it was not going to have a happily ever after. Knowing her, it probably didn't originally... and I'm not convinced that I wouldn't have loved that too, amidst the racking sobs. This is Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, meets Guillermo del Toro's adaptation, meets Disney's Beauty and the Beast... with a dash of Charlotte's Web. It has quite a bit of Gothic horror as well, a maggot manifesto if you will. It may feel like it starts a little slow while the atmosphere builds, but buckle up to not blink for the final 40% of the book. Just WOW! So excited to have this sprayed edge masterpiece preordered to add to my shelf trophies... it is going to have pride of place!

I loved it. I liked this one better than the first one. I love Victoria. I also love reading about the manor. I love the mysteryious suspense in it. I also liked the little bit of magic we got within the story. I love the writing and the pacing is great. I loved the world and exploring more of it with the second book. I loved the ending. I also liked how gothic the book was. I loved how we got to explore more of the world and the manor with the second book. I loved Victoria. I thought that she was a strong female main character. I also liked how we solved the mystery element within the book. I loved the whismy writing and dark romantic feeling. I will definitely be reading more from this author in the future. I loved her writing style. I thought that the writing was very lush and lyrical. I also loved the romantic suspense vibe of the book. Overall, a great book. I want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a earc early.

I was so excited to dive into this one I grabbed the arc on NetGalley right away!

I should’ve read the blurb before starting as it would’ve helped me understand the beginning a little better and that this would be Victoria’s story through journal entries.

The first half is slower but it sets everything up. I adored the relationship between Victoria and her father. It added comfort to the story and their moments kept me interested in how things would play out.
The friendship with Helena was also really sweet!

I personally thrive on banter so at 50% this book really took off for me and I was grinning and giggling so often from the things Inno said or did.
That man is delicious and I would love to see some character art of him 😍

I loved everything he questioned or asked and his devotion to Victoria is unmatched! I ate up every second of the last half!!

4.5 rounding up!

"You believe I am a monster. I will show you what a monster I can be."
And that he did and I still adore him..🥺

Her Creation follows the story of Victoria Frankenstein and her creation. I have always been a huge fan of gothic literature and I will always be drawn to feminist retellings.

Victoria is a student of science working secretly under her father, when they both become obsessed with the idea of resurrection, Victoria allows it to take over her world. Enter Inno, no longer human- but given a second chance at life. All he wants is Victoria. His obsession is dark and depraved and he will do anything to have her.

I flew through this book, I had a great time with the Victorian setting. I was expecting it to be a bit darker after reading the foreword, but perhaps that says more about me as a reader, lol. Either was this was an excellent homage to Mary Shelley and I would recommend it to all who enjoy things on the gothic side!

Thank you to NetGalley, Bloom and Jeneane O'Riley for an e-arc to review ❤️

When I first heard of this book I felt very intrigued by the fact it was a Frankenstein retelling and had to read it. I did think it was a well wrote retelling of a classic story, definitely a slower paced read while we learn so much about Victoria and how she brings life to death while dealing with societies standards of women in the late 1700s. I liked how Inno was portrayed as a monster but with heart and so much love for his creator and that a book with so much emotion, grief and heart could end on such a happy note.

“If our love is damned, then I will enjoy the flames before they take us to hell where I will get to love you fully. Love is not reserved for the good or holy, the dishonest and corrupt are given love. Do monsters not deserve it too?”

A captivating reimagining of Frankenstein that has entered my blood stream, my heart, my soul. It was hauntingly beautiful.
I was completely entranced with this story. It was a love story like no other. I found myself in the clutches of their love and I couldn't look away.

“You call me a monster, but I have been made purely from the materials you chose. If you deem me grotesque, it is because you’ve built me from unworthy materials.”

“You are the reason I hold breath in my lungs again. I am your Adam. There is no escaping you, only torture when I am away from you.”

“I love you. In every life, I will love you,”

The most highlighted book award goes to Her Creation!!!! I have never highlighted a book as much as this one!!

Really enjoyed this gender-swapped (Victor/Victoria) Frankenstein retelling!

This story is a love story, but a dark one. There is a lot of heaviness and lots of character flaws and growth. Victoria made me angry sometimes, but I think that’s the point lol I did understand her though.

Victoria is on the path to learn everything she can from her father (a surgeon). When tragedy strikes, she is determined to perfect the resurrection process.

The story itself was really interesting, though the middle kind of dragged a little. It’s a SLOW paced book btw.

The characters were A+, plot was really good, and the writing was wonderful.

The romance (imo) was really beautiful. She is his everything, his whole world and I loved everything about that aspect.

I jumped on the chance to read this book after reading The Secret in The Garden by this author. I figured the stories would be completely unrelated as they belong to a series of retellings, but I really had no idea what to expect as I dove in without even reading the book description. I truly enjoyed this author’s writing so much that I didn’t care what this book would be about. In hindsight, I probably would have shied away from this book if I would have checked out the summary, because I have never really been interested in Frankenstein and the lore that swirls around the name. I am so glad I trusted the author though and went in blind. This book was another level of beautiful. If you love any form of dark, gothic romance, this book is for you!

This journal within a book format was perfect for this Frankenstein reimagining. I have always loved O'Riley's strong female characters, and Victoria Frankestein does not disappoint. This story takes place in a time where women could not practice medicine or be surgeons. Victoria has been working (secretly) with her talented father since a very young age, and has grown very adept in the laboratory. Together they work on experiments, and Victoria obsesses over the idea of reanimation. She finally gets her chance to bring someone back, but will her obsession be her ultimate undoing?

I enjoyed the narration on this one, and her voices and inflections for different characters were perfect. I did have to listen at a slower speed than I normally do because of the heavier accent, but I didn’t mind.

Her Creation by Jeneane O'Riley is book 2 in the Dark Manor Chronicles and is published by Sourcebooks Bloom Books in Deluxe Edition.
The book can be read as a stand alone.
Set in the late 17 hundereds, Victoria Frankenstein is a brilliant scientist who can rival her male competition easily. But this is a mans world and she has to stay in the shadows.
And creating a new being from flesh and bone, unthinkable. But she does and now ahe has to live with the consequences.
Reading this book reminded me of Mary Shelley's famous book and nomen est omen they say.
Anyway, I enjoyed reading this romantasy, 4,5 stars.
