The Preternatural Chronicles #11

Blood and Thunder: Preternatural Chronicles Book 11

Rate this book
John stands one step past the event horizon of a path he can never alter.

The darkness has been allowed to permeate the heart of a man whose only crime was wanting to save those he loves from an eternity of nothing. Now the bill comes due, and our hero realizes he’s bitten off more than he can chew. Will he have the will to find balance with this newfound power, or will he succumb to his primal rage and allow the poison of hatred to swallow his body—and soul?

The newest members of the Council of Wizards must face a harsh trial to prove their worth—or suffer swift punishment for their failure. All the while, a ticking time bomb of unknown power walks freely through empty hallways, guided only by childlike wonder.

The situation in Faerie fares no better, as a king wields the dichotomous crowns that begin to pull at his sanity from opposite ends of a mind-tearing spectrum. Can he find the strength to wear the unified crowns that not even the creator of his plane could bear? Will he find a way to shift Faerie and Midworld back into alignment—or will biblical catastrophes ravage our worlds once more?

Our friendly neighborhood werewolf joins a half-centaur, half-shaman on a crusade to fight the children of darkness unleashed on Earth. Good thing the enemy isn’t wielding artifacts of legend powerful enough to destroy even the gods, right? Right?! Maybe a new ally will aid them in their glorious battles for control over Midworld. But hey, who said anything about fighting fair?

Finally, the light of John’s unlife is still being held in a beautiful prison… at the center of Hell. She knows what’s to come—and can do nothing to alter the prophecy. Many will die. The gates will open. And all she can think about is how much her death is going to hurt John’s vulnerable heart...

Blood and Thunder sets up the final trilogy in John the vampire’s story. Hold onto your butts—because you are not prepared for this wild ride.

Hunter Blain

My name is Hunter, and I’m a wordaholic. I’m also about to break the fourth wall…of your mindhole. Because there is a true story behind this…well…story.

It begins with two best friends who grew up together, breaking rules and raising hell as they shaped each other’s personalities into the shameless assholes they are today. Well, at least for one of them, but I’ll get to that in a moment. These two boys—let’s call them Hunter and John—were all but inseparable. John excelled at creating music powerful enough to make angels weep and being the funniest asshole in Texas while Hunter dabbled—poorly, I might add—in his humble writings. Because they were self-declared brothers from other mothers, John respected Hunter’s humble writings as much as I—I mean Hunter (stupid third person perspective)—respected John’s musical magic. John’s tunes could have changed the world, one day…

One fine day, after reading one of Hunter’s horrifically detailed short stories about a serial killer, John asked Hunter to write a story about him.

“Hell yeah, dude! What do you want to be?” Hunter asked, brimming with honor and biting back a very manly squee.

“A vampire,” John responded with a mischievous gleam in his eye. “But not one of those sparkly ones. A true bad ass!”

“Done!” Hunter crowed with a smile and an accompanying high five.

“No, dude. Promise. Promise you’ll write and finish a book about me. You are the most prolific writer of our generation!” John said. (Something like that. I might be paraphrasing a little, but you get the gist of it). “I would consider it an honor to live on for eternity with your words as my life’s blood.”

Hunter agreed, never to realize the weight of that promise until one Sunday morning when John’s mother called, crying incoherently.

John…had died.

Hunter was left in a cold world without his best friend and doppelgänger. Hunter still thinks about that moment to this day. How the morning light crept through the bedroom window while Hunter stared at the ceiling, noticing how the popcorn texture created cruel, jagged shadows. How everything started to blur as his chest was crushed beneath the weight of what he was hearing, each word stacking heavily upon the other until only fitful, ragged gasps of air could escape his throat. Only fiery tears existed, especially after the horrific realization that Hunter now had to make some of the hardest phone calls of his life to the circle of friends who orbited around John’s solar pull.

Their star was no more, leaving their universe a colder and darker place.

John not only left Hunter, but a friend named Valenta as well. There was also Nathanial and Depweg. The friends were each stricken numb with the loss of such a beloved flare of life. But…

When the three found out that Hunter was keeping his promise to write the greatest story ever told—starring their dear friend, John—they demanded to be a part of the adventure. Each of them immediately knew what type of supernatural character they wanted to play in this urban fantasy eulogy. It would be a funeral pyre of words, and their fictional personas would be John’s pallbearers.

So please, as you read the following pages, feel free to laugh. Laugh at the situations John is placed in and his dickish dialogue to those around him, because John is 100% in this story without alteration (albeit he is a vampire). Laugh and let his memory live on inside the theater of your mind. Like he does in ours.

Thank you, sincerely, from the bottom of my beating heart, for giving my best friend the chance to live again. You are part of this magical ritual, and that would make him the happiest man in the…well, wherever the hell he is.

John On indeed

I can’t tell you how delighted I was to see this pop up on my recommendations. This was a fantastic return to John and his friends, and his never ending quest to end the book on a movie quote. Every character gets a moment to shine, or do horrible things. The prophesy gets clearer and yet more muddled. Chaos and humor, and jaw dropping action happens on every page, and I love it. Once the final trilogy is published, there will be a John sized hole in my heart, I’ve come to love these characters.

Another great one!

This series is amazing! It's funny, well written and well thought out.
It's become something I've read many times and haven't gotten tired of it. The characters are real enough to feel for and hope along with, within the comedy are moments of clarity.

Very good continuation of the story

Another great book. John really does turn everything he touches into ash. But he's funny and it's getting to the good part so I'll keep reading

An honest review

Absolutely Fabulous work. Hunter Blain brings it with an imagination that takes no prisoners. As we go willingly into his worlds. And most importantly his tribute.

Finally caught up to the rollercoaster of a series. I’m just exhausted in a good way with how much went down. John even after 11 books still does dumb shit and fuck everything up. Hopefully (doubt it) he will make smarter choices next book. Michael was a better man I gave him credit for and sad that he’s gone now. I hope Gabriel keep it together but I find it funny that they’re so mad at John for not marching to the beat of “fate” that laid out for him with them guiding his choices. We see now that he is changing things and it starting to look like even heaven and hell don’t know what will happen.

The last 2 books lulled me into putting aside my hate for ulrich for him to make a comeback and remember why I hate his guts. I hope Val and Colin can be saved because that’s literally the only allies outside the immediate group that can actually help. As for Locke….. I was speechless when he just killed all those faes like that. If John did some shit like that everyone would’ve been on his ass for it. Tbh the whole group done some unredeemable things but I guess they’re trying their best. I did cheer when he killed the red and blue cloaks. They were dumb asf for killing the other elders through lauf (glad her ass is finally dead sheesh) for petty shit when the fate of the world is at stake. A lot of characters fall to the hubris in this series which I think is a reoccurring theme through the books. As for depweg just put him out of his misery because even I feel bad for him with everything he been through. Author definitely got to lay off him lollll. As for Taylor, I hope they can save him even though this series proves that nobody survives long and I’m not going to hold my breathe for him. He tried so hard to save and protect faerie but his people were decimated. Hope he finds peace in the end.

As for the gold light was that God? That would be crazy asf and I can’t believe John didn’t mention it to anyone. He’s so absentminded and so caught up in his head he be missing things. I wonder where was satan though…. Is he trying to put the path on track and just kill Lilly already. Ulrich knowing his future now will stop at nothing to keep himself alive. I just don’t know who’s the villain anymore. Satan always been this looming big bad but I’m not even sure anymore. Seem to me a bigger threat is the main concern and I think everyone could be on the same side if they stop killing each other. Idk wtf is about to happen but I’m in until the end. I enjoyed this emotionally draining saga even with all my complaints. Only 2 books left and we will see the end of John’s story. I just hope some of the cast survives 🥴.

It's been a minute since we had a new John Cook book, but it was worth the wait. Hunter Blain's, um, unique humor is always a hoot. And things are shaping up for the 'big finish'.

engaging book

Here was another engaging story that’s pulling everything towards what has been written, except for John ,who keeps changing everything while destroying stuff.
