Amy McDowell did an incredible job on the sociological study of this primarily white Evangelical church in Oxford, Mississippi. One of the things I appreciated most about this book was that McDowell went very deep into the culture of this church, but I also appreciated the personal tone that came along with this text. From pot luck to volunteering with the church, McDowell was open about her role while remaining deeply embedded in the church's activities. The tone, though, was very interesting and reminded me of bell hooks in the way that her academic writing was very accessible. It's rare to read an academic sociological study and really feel like you are a part of the group and also in conversation with the author. As for the subject of the text, I think the topic of small talk within this church is a really good way to view the very distinct issues of avoidance politics and ultimately what this leads to, specifically with the white communities. And even more specifically, the white Evangelical communities and Christian nationalism in primarily white churches. A very interesting book and a really engaging read. Highly recommended.
