I wondered what genre it would be called, certainly a noir derivative, and went through neo noir, noir modérn, but realised that the perfect category was already stated on the back cover; cyber noir.
I think that this is important as it is essential that reviews are read with the appropriate context. Genre being one of them.
Sometimes following type, this story has a familiar feel. In some ways there is nothing new but in other ways it is completely different. The main character is the perfect example of this; a returning flawed private investigator/hitman/troubleshooter archetype. And yet maintains an identity of his own. The same is even more true of the supporting cast. And absolutely the same can be said of the cityscape.
Leaning on all that the genre and its archetypes can lend, this story uses them to shortcut the storytelling as little needs explanation. Just the elements unique to the world of this story and the people living on it. This allows the focus to remain internal on this particular story.
This for me is the sole frustration of this volume: it isn't a complete story. This isn't like a story within an overarching tale but like the first chapter of a book. The chapter on its own provides no satisfaction but leaves the reader needing more. Not just wanting more. But. yes, I want more.
