La Esposa Que Fui: Los veo seguir adelante. Pero yo sigo aquí

Rate this book
Estar atrapada en esta casa con el esposo del que me estoy separando es insoportable.

Dexter apenas me mira.

Maria Frankland has a dubious internet search history and a very worried mother-in-law. However, neither of these things can stop her writing gripping psychological thrillers in which you’ll never find a happy-ever-after.

Her novels are mostly set in Yorkshire where you’ll hear the accent through all her characters. These are people you could live next door to, or closer still… don’t say you haven’t been warned.

Maria’s novels are fast-paced, down to earth and realistic. You never know what’s around the corner…

The overall premise alone was enough to give this book a 5 star! This was different from any other books that I’ve read by Maria Frankland and I loved every minute! Finding out what was truly happening with Georgia was a jaw dropping moment and per usual, Maria did not disappoint!! I was engrossed early on & was emotionally invested in the outcome of this story.

This story had so much character development, unlikable & lovable characters. In other words, she took us through a series of emotions. The layers of suspense kept me turning the pages and the raw honesty in her writing made the characters’ struggles feel incredibly real. This is one of those books that stays with you long after you’ve finished. Every book I read by this author reminds me of why she’s one of my favs! Highly recommend for anyone who loves psychological thrillers with emotional depth.

Review: Updated 10/9/25

The Wife I Was, by Maria Frankland marks her celebratory 25th novel! And she couldn’t have released a more perfect book for this incredible milestone!

Details can’t be broken down here without giving too much away, so what I will say is you will sympathize greatly with Georgia, the main character who struggles to remember what happened on a particular night. Her Nan might be the only person who can help her, but she has Alzheimer’s, so who would believe what she has to say? Their relationship has always been strong, and Georgia will have to rely on their bond to move forward.

What readers have come to expect when delving into Maria’s writing are some very detestable characters. She didn’t hold back here! It’s what makes you emotionally vested in her protagonist from start to finish.

This is a fast page-turner that had me alongside Georgia’s every movement at every moment. Feeling as if her muddled memories were my own. Heightened drama accelerates toward the end with a jaw-dropping conclusion!

This gripping novel left me emotionally raw. Seeking truth and finding justice for Georgia and her loved ones is a journey well worth taking. I highly recommend The Wife I Was, which I believe is Maria Frankland’s best work yet!

Another gripping read by Maria Frankland. Normally I dislike paranormal type books but if I really like an author, I want to read all their books. Overall this was a gripping page turner. It’s very unique where Georgia is overseeing the mystery of her own death. The book was more depressing than I was expecting, very emotional but the characters felt very real and their emotions felt real so that just shows good writing. I liked how it all wrapped up in the end.

This just might be one of the best books of Maria’s yet! I am not usually one for supernatural or ghost stories (ok, maybe I make exceptions for Jeneva Rose books) but when a new Maria Frankland book comes out, it’s an automatic must read for me since I’ve read every single one of her books already and loved all of them and let me tell you this book hits it out of the park! The Wife I Was is completely different than anything else she has written because it deals with a ghost element and I loved it! I was drawn in from the first page and I couldn’t put it down, except for to watch the Backyard Brawl WVU vs. Pitt game yesterday where my twin sons go to college against each other! I devoured this book. The character development was so good and I loved learning about each character and trying to figure out who was the murderer. I absolutely adored the character of Nan and felt like she was such a fire cracker and added so much to the story. The twist at the end definitely got me once again! I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. The writing was sharp and the chapters were short and flew by. I loved the ending. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat and you won't be able to do anything else until you finish it! So grab a copy and your favorite reading spot and clear your calendar! I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I received an advance copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.

I don't like paranormal/ supernatural-themed books. I rarely entertain stories featuring ghosts.
It's also unusual for me to think long and hard after finishing a thriller, about the story, but then, The Wife I Was, enthralled me.

A page-turner, with a slight twist of including characters that have crossed the rainbow, and, waiting to see the perpetrator get their comeuppance, I was glued to this book.

Georgia is thought to have committed suicide by overdosing and drowning. At the time, her unlikeable husband was estranged from her and wanting a divorce. The coroner's office bungled her autopsy, and her ghost can't let go to find peace, predominantly because she has left her 10-year old daughter Etta, behind. The only person capable of seeing Georgia is her Nanna suffering with Altzheimers and ghosts in similar positions to Georgia.

I LOVED this story. Buy it. Read it. Give it as a Christmas gift. It has a touch of everything - characters that are rounded and grounded, a plot that is intruiging, a story that is gripping, sad, funny, disturbing. A touch of everything. 5 stars

This is a great book, and I’m going would REALLY advise you not to read other reviews. They tell you too much! I’ve read all of Maria’s books, and this is my favorite! It is very emotional in many ways with an air of sadness and heartwarming. I loved all of the adventures of the protagonist! She worked hard to resolve the mystery! While the reveal wasn’t earth shattering, the journey getting there was satisfying. Also, I usually dread the last chapters of many books as that final reveal can ruin the whole book. But I thought the last twist here was just fun! All of Maria’s books are good, so I encourage you to read them!

What a story! This book was as emotional as it was shocking—suspenseful, heartbreaking, and full of twists that kept me hooked from start to finish. Georgia’s journey is both devastating and powerful, and Maria Frankland captured it with such authenticity that I felt like I was right there alongside her the entire time. The writing is clever, raw, and deeply immersive. Out of all of Maria’s books, this one is by far my favorite. She’s truly outdone herself with this unforgettable story.

The wife I was by Maria Frankland

I have never—never—been this emotionally body-slammed by a book. And yes, I’m aware that might say as much about my current health situation as it does about Maria Frankland’s writing. I’m 38. I’m a mother of three. I’m a wife. I’m tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix. So clearly this was the perfect moment to read a psychological thriller that crawls inside your chest and rearranges the furniture.

The Wife I Was didn’t just mess me up. It redecorated. No warning. No mercy.

This book hit something painfully personal: the idea of being present, loving fiercely, and still feeling invisible. Of wanting to stay—not rush off, not disappear—but to linger long enough to make sure the people you love would somehow be okay if they ever had to navigate the world without you. That quiet, awful thought that maybe you live as long as the last person who remembers you. Yeah. That one. Thanks for that, Maria. Truly. I’ll be thinking about it at 3 a.m.

It’s emotional, hopeful in a crooked sort of way, and deeply unsettling. A psychological mind-f in the best and worst sense. Seeing everything. Knowing everything. And being utterly unable to make yourself heard. That concept alone made me physically nauseous. In a literary way. Mostly.

I cried. A lot. And somehow, weirdly, that made the book even better—because good friends don’t stop you from crying; they sit there and hand you tissues. This book did exactly that, then whispered something profound while you were distracted.

So yes. Five stars. Because it hurt. Because it comforted. Because it disturbed me just enough to make me want to stick around a little longer and feel things deeply.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to emotionally recover and pretend this book didn’t just know me better than I know myself.

My new Favorite by a favorite author!

I’ve read all of Maria Frankland’s books, but this one is so different from all of the rest with its supernatural elements. Usually I am not into supernatural stories, but I LOVED this one. Georgia, Nan, Georgia’s Mum, & Summer were such great characters! Of course, the evil and not-so-nice characters were interesting too, as villains and bad guys (and bad gals). This book was perfect to start out the spooky Halloween season. There were also some great humorous moments throughout the book. This author is a fabulous storyteller, and I just loved how she told this tale. To be honest, I guessed the big twist ahead of time, but it didn’t ruin it for me. There were a few surprises at the very end. Of course, finishing this within a day of its release means I am all caught up with her books again until the next one is released, & I can’t wait for the next one!

The Wife I was , by Mariah Franklin !!! What a book this book was by far one of the best books yet I fell in love with
Georgina , Dexter was her husband, and she had a daughter named Etta, her mom whose name was Sharon, and Maddie was her older sister, and Nan was her grandma with whom she adored terrifically. Nan was in a nursing home suffering from all timers. This story from the beginning will capture you. It was a riveting thrill ride from page one to the very last page. I really love this book. I rated it a five star, but I wished I could’ve rated it higher. Mariah is quite the storyteller go out and get this book. I’m not kidding. It is good. It is good thank you once again Mariah Franklin for such an awesome. . Mariah is quite the story. Tell her go out and get this book. I’m not kidding. It is good. It is way good thank you once again Mariah Franklin for such a awesome book.

The Wife I Was by Maria Frankland is a gripping psychological thriller.
Georgia is trapped in the same house as the husband she’s separating from. As Dexter grows colder and more distant, their daughter Etta is pulled further away and something feels increasingly wrong. With only her Nan to confide in, she begins to suspect Dexter is hiding something serious. And if she’s right, she’ll do whatever it takes to protect her daughter.

I was so lucky to receive an advanced copy of Maria’s latest book and couldn’t wait to get started. I really enjoyed the different style she used this time, it added something unique to the story. The plot was gripping and full of tension, and I was completely engaged the whole way through. A twisty, absorbing read that didn’t let go.

Thank you Maria for allowing me to read your fantastic book early.

I do not even know where to begin! When I was chosen as an ARC reader (someone who gets to read and review the book before release) I was over the moon, but without having read other individual reviews, I had no idea what I was getting into. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement!
Ms. Frankland.......Bravo! What an amazing story! Kept me guessing the entire way through. To be blunt, I have never been one for ghost stories and paranormal, but this drew me in from the very beginning! The book has equal parts psychological thriller, touching and sentimental moments and a bit of humor as well. If you have not preordered this book, I encourage you to do it now! It will be released on 9/30 and it will be available on Kindle Unlimited!! Take my word for it!!

Another nail biter from Maria Frankland but this time with a difference.  Our protagonist is dead and it's so, so sad.  Of course there are  many people who might have wanted her dead and it's hard to find out who killed you when you have no voice and your presence is known only to a few.

The story being told from a totally new perspective added to the tension for me.  You could feel Georgia's frustration.  She knew she was murdered so why wouldn't anyone believe it?  To watch someone befriending your child, cosying up to your husband, did she kill Georgia?  Being wiped from your husbands life.  Did he do it?

Not an easy read but Maria at her best.

I was chuffed to receive an ARC of this book from Maria as I love her books.

The Wife I Was is slightly different from Maria's other books as it has a supernatural edge to it which I personally loved as I do love a spooky read. I felt this worked really well alongside the psychological aspect of the book which is what Maria is well known for.

I tore through this book at a rate of knots and found it not only gripping but emotional too.

Thanks as ever for the ARC Maria, I will most definitely be recommending this one!

Spoiler Free ARC Review: 4.5 ⭐️ Release Date: September 30th, 2025

I'm still in shock 😲 For the actions in this story to happen in order to get the facts in the end 🤯 This book was truly written with all intent to twist your mind to think and keep reading because it was that great. But the details behind it give it a great wonder as to who and why and what happen throughout. Definitely a must read if you ask me, I'd read it all over again for sure, just for the adrenaline rush to get to the end 🤯

Told from a VERY different perspective to her other books, “The Wife I Was” is so cleverly executed by Maria. I wasn’t sure how the story was going to play out at first but I was quickly drawn in and I felt like one of the characters. Some parts of the story made me feel frustrated, anxious and even claustrophobic - that’s how well it’s been written. After I’d finished the book, it left me wondering and questioning a whole host of different things which you may understand once you’ve read this story for yourself. Another great thriller of a read - thank you, Maria.

WOW!!!!! I’m speechless!!!!! This is the best book I’ve read so far this year. It is also the best book this author has written so far. I don’t want to give too much away but I will say it’s the way this story was told that made it so great. I couldn’t put it down for the life of me. I had to find out what happened and fast. I was hooked. This author is one of my favorites of this one proved why. I highly recommend her and all her books. I’ve read most of them by now and none of them disappoints. I can’t wait for her next book in December.

Living with the man you’re separating from is never a good idea! Georgia is finding that but for the sake of her daughter she is trying to make it work. But things are not great and can only get worse. This is a superb book. Loved every minute, trad it in one sitting. Guessed the twisted but it didn’t change my love for it. This is an amazing read and I think you will all love it. Definitely read it! Maria never lets us down!

This is my 3rd book by Maria Frankland & What a brilliant story this was, I really enjoyed this it was another great read, it was a different style of writing and it really pulled on my heartstrings and it was extremely sad in parts but so well written, the twists of the story made it hard to put down , made up around family, jealousy & lies, & the lengths a person could go to through greed.. I highly recommend this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Read this book in one day as it is a fast paced realistic storyline.  The perception of Georgia in her past life telling the story made it very intriguing to keep reading.  Hunting down her own killer with twists and turns along the way.  The saying All things come to Pass fits this story perfectly.   Love the final twist!

Wow, this book blew me away! It was gripping from the very start, unique, emotional and kept me guessing until the shocking but satisfying conclusion. It is quite different from many other thrillers which is one of the things that makes it great, as well as the brilliant plot and writing that is common in Maria Frankland's books. I absolutely loved it and can't recommend it enough!

I can't imagine being stuck in a house with the husband I am trying to separate from, but it sounds miserable!  This thriller is filled with tension, secrets, and some twists that tricked me! Definitely a little different than Maria's other thrillers, but still just as good.  It is a quick read and I couldn't put it down!

Different!!
I really did enjoy this book.
I am just disappointed that when you are 'departed' you have to walk, catch a lift, or catch a train to go anywhere - lol. But to visit the sights, free of charge is a great idea!

If you celebrate Halloween - which we don't in my country - this would be a good spooky read for the season.

I was fortunate to read this latest thriller by Maria in advance, and it did not disappoint. The storyline provided a unique perspective that kept me guessing until the final chapter. With plenty of twists and turns, it was impossible to put the book down until I had finished it. If you enjoy a thriller filled with tension and suspense, I highly recommend purchasing this book.

The Wife I Was is one hell of a page turner. It’s a difficult book to write a review for without giving away plot spoilers, but suffice to say, it is perfectly executed. And more than fair to say – you do not want to miss this book! Grab a coy today. I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next.
