Pucking Out

Gabriel Cross

Being a Lynx was always the dream. I worked hard, pushed myself harder, and put up with more than I’d like to admit at home just to get to this moment. To receive the call that would change my life in more ways than I’d ever imagined. My first week on the team was great, if not a little nerve-wracking. After taking our Annual family Christmas photo, my world shifts completely when I walk into the gym for workouts and lock gazes with the most intense set of brown eyes I’ve ever seen. This man has my closeted self feeling things I’ve never felt for anyone before. He’s mysterious, and a man of few words, but the connection I felt the moment we touched has me wanting to get to know everything there is about him.

I shouldn’t want my new teammate. Shouldn’t want to do all of the things I want to do with him, but I do.

Being with Roman goes against everything I’ve been taught, but he makes me want to give everything up to have him and finally be my true self.

Roman Whittaker

Coming back from my Annual family vacation, I never thought I’d be stumbling over myself for my new teammate. He’s everything I didn’t know I needed, but everything I now don’t want to live without. After getting to know more about him, fear has me in its grasp. In the end, will he choose me over losing everything he’s ever known?

One wrong move–wrong kiss–could either be the beginning of the end or the beginning of forever.

DNF. It pains me to do this as I love finding out (new to me) authors but the insta-lust/love just did not work for me. It's never my preferred thing but in here it was too full on.

GROMAN will forever have my heart!!!

I never wanted this story to end, it was truly amazing and tugged at your heart in all the right ways.

This book was beautifully written but also with great sensitivity. Calling Gabe’s mother Satan would be faaaar too easy, can we just throw a bucket of water on her and watch her melt already?

I literally binged it in a day and a half and could not part with it, I love all the characters and was ecstatic to find out that this is a whole series and will be able to explore the others in more depth!!!!! And in my opinion we could of gone with waaaaay more ‘pucking’ references because I loved each and every single one.

I melted at so many lines and the love for eachother really was heartwarming. I have a whole folder in my phone dedicated to screenshots and thank you for writing such a beautiful story! This came highly recommended and did not disappoint!!!

Some of my favourite quotes:

“Mother of all hockey gods, did I just say pucking?”

“This isn’t just some fling for me. If it’s a fling you’re looking for between us, then I need to know now before I fall even more for you than I already have”

“Exactly what the possessive beast inside of me is beginning to crave.”

“My gaze locks with the most intense brown eyes I’ve ever seen. They draw me in like a magnet and hold me captive as he stares into my soul”

And so much more!!!! Would recommend to everyone💚

🌶🌶🌶🌶

Let me start with how I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this book! One of my favorite books of the year!

Imagine not being able to be yourself around your family. Being a hockey player was a problem for Gabe in his mother's eyes, but being gay too because of her religious beliefs... well, that was just what was dimming his light, and Roman was the one person who could save him from that. Roman is tough on the outside but has so much patience and passion for Gabe, it makes my heart melt!

Gabe is such a sweet soul, and I love how he takes control of his life to make sure he chooses his happiness. He loves hard but also is so scared to really be himself. Roman is so open about his feelings while being patient and understanding. Roman is so possessive, but you begin to see a hint of that from Gabe towards the end. Both of their grandmothers and their relationships with them were so warm and emotional. I felt so bad for Gabe during many parts of the book but loved how he developed into his true self throughout the book. The way this story was written was amazing, and it really got all the emotions across.

I loved how supportive the team was and how Roman's family was careful with Gabe when they spent the holidays together. There was honestly nothing about the story I disliked. This story is perfect for anyone looking for a wholesome story with touches on abuse and discrimination against being different.

I received this book as an ARC directly from the author in exchange for an honest review.

What better time to enjoy a cozy M/M romance with a happy ending than during the holiday season?

Roman and Gabe found love at first sight which is just as cheesy, corny and beautiful as you’d expect. They are both annoyingly lovesick and possessive but in the most wholesome way that just makes you melt.

Gabe is navigating his religious controlling family while falling in love and discovering what true support and friendship means. He slowly figures out how to have his own hobbies alongside forming new bonds and friendships with his new hockey team.

Roman is navigating how to respect Gabe’s boundaries, support his decisions and healing, while also learning how to manage his own possessiveness and constant need to fight.

This whole story navigates the queer experience of finding yourself, finding love, and facing the hardest obstacles in life with a support system to help you when you truly need it. Overall a cozy and sweet love story.

I had the pleasure of being part of the ARC team for this novel and what a pleasure it was. I rated this book 3.75 ⭐️ This is a funny, fast paced hockey romance story between two teammates. The heartbreak and torture Gabe goes through with his family will pull on your heartstrings to no end, but the love story that blooms for him with Roman is a nice balance. The love at first sight/ insta-love vibe was not my favourite as I much prefer a slow burn, but the relationship between Gabe and Rom grows with the story, even if it is at light speed. And if you like your romance spicy, the spice be spicing in this book! Great holiday romance read to pull on your heartstrings, make you laugh and heat things up a little.

This book was simply two sunshines falling for one another. I love that Roman tried to be grumpy but when it came to his boy, he was just whipped.

The hard topics that were touched on in this book was so well written. I know the issue is something many people go through and I’m sure anyone can relate to Gabe and the issues he has to face with his parents. I loved how supportive Roman was during the entire book. He never forced his own views and always supported Gabe in any way that he could.

The romance between them was so cute and I loved watching their relationship develop some more. I’m intrigued to read the rest of the books in the series to catch some snippets of them.

I received this book as an ARC but this is my honest opinion after having read the book.

Thank you for allowing me to arc read this one.

I absolutely loved this. Roman and Gabe are priceless, the life that Gabe lives is absolutely heartbreaking! I can’t imagine living through what he did, I love them together. I love their team mates and Roman’s family! I won’t give too much, Shelby this was my first book I’ve read from you and I am soooo hooked!

This book isn’t for the weak, this book tore my heart out so many times and then by the end it was bandaged and put back but this was one of the good ones that really grip you until the end! It’s soooo worth the read!!!!!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fun, Engaging, and Full of Heart

Pucking Out was such an unexpectedly delightful read! I really enjoyed the dynamic between the two main characters, Gabe and Roman—their chemistry was playful, heartfelt, and had me rooting for them from the start.

While this was my first man romance, it absolutely pulled me in. The story was fun, engaging, and kept me eager to see how their relationship would evolve chapter after chapter. I especially appreciated how well-written the characters were. Their backgrounds, personalities, and emotional journeys were built out with real care and intention, making the entire story feel meaningful and vibrant.

Wow! This book was so good! I was engulfed in this book from the first chapter! I absolutely love Gabe and Roman. Some parts of Gabe’s home life really hits home for how my mother was towards me. I am so glad he was able to make the decision he made with everything that was given. I absolutely love how Roman stuck up for Gabe when needed. The ending was perfect for the book!!

I loved this book. The story was so good with how it showed two different families and how they handled a loved one coming out. The possessiveness between the main characters was so good and just added to the story on every way. I really want another book on Roman and Gabe.

I read this book as an ARC. I will be honest at first I was scared it would be a DNF. I gave it a bit, then I was sucked it. It’s about hockey player on a new team, who is gay, but has not come out yet. He locks eyes with another hockey player on the team Roman who is also gay, but everyone knows it. The team is very excepting of Roman. Their hockey team is the every sense of what a family should be. Gabe’s from a family who is very strict in their Christian values. Gabe is scared of what will happen if they out he’s “into men”. When Romans and Gabe’s eye lock on that first day it’s game on. While there are very hard, emotional moments to get through it so worth the read. Just so you know Gabe’s mom is the craziest woman I have ever thought about. This author really shed light on what struggles the gay community goes through. She did this book so much justice. This book is also very spicy. I was glad I finished it. This is also the first solo m/m I have ever read it as I said I’m glad I finished it.

M/M romance
Possessive MMCs
Grumpy/Sunshine
Coming Out
Instant Connection

Pucking Out was my first strictly M/M romance and I couldn’t get enough of it! I knew based on the first 2 books in the series that I was going to love Roman’s and Gabe’s story, but didn’t think they would become my favorite couple.

This book has plenty of steam (even more than the first 2 books in my opinion), but doesn’t take away from the overarching themes seen such as self-discovery and found family. You can see so much character growth in Gabe from when he first joins the Lynx as he gains the support system he never expected to have after growing up in a highly religious, manipulative household. I can’t wait to see more glimpses of their relationship in future books.

It was kind of difficult to figure out the timeline of how far this book is set before Pucking Blind (Book 1 of the series) since it was not explicitly stated. If it helps, I estimated that it was approximately 4 years before the other 2 books based on Gabe’s sister’s age being 16 in Pucking Out and her about to turn 20 in Pucking Eh. There may be something better to judge by, but that’s what I used.

This was my first m/m romance and a ARC read at that. Thank you Shelby Rae!

I loved Roman and Gabe so much. You get to see Gabe evolve from being in the closet to standing up to his mom and everything in between.

And Roman.. I dont have enough words for him. The understanding and love he has for Gabe from the start amazing. Being willing to move at Gabes pace, phenomenal. Being nervous to meet Gabes grandma, adorable. Roman is the perfect man. He helps Gabe come out of his shell without pressuring him at all.

The author potraying these two characters the way she did was chefs kiss. Neither of them are overly tough despite being hockey players. They both have a sensitive side with Gabe being on the softer side compared to Roman. The perfect couple though, faults and all.

I laughed during this book, I swooned, I cried. I had the most amazing time reading it.

I received this as an advanced reader copy, but got sick and behind schedules. I went into Pucking Out not expecting to fall this hard, but Gabe and Roman got me immediately. I’m usually not big on instant love, but with them it just worked. They were adorable, genuinely funny, and had me smiling like an idiot the whole time. I was honestly close to tears at points because they were just that cute.

Their chemistry was effortless, the banter felt natural, and the spice… wow. Absolute chef’s kiss. Hot without being over the top, and it fit them perfectly.

This book made me laugh, made me soft, and left me in such a good mood when I finished. If you’re into hockey romance with instant connection, great humor, and spice that delivers, I highly recommend this one.

Pucking Out by Shelby Rae is a refreshing Christmas romance that masterfully blends the age gap and enemies-to-lovers tropes for a truly engaging holiday read. The story shines with complex, well-developed leads whose authentic voices and believable motivations make their journey both compelling and emotionally resonant. The festive atmosphere is woven seamlessly into the narrative, offering cozy, seasonal charm that enhances the romance rather than serving as mere background. While the book delivers plenty of steam, it also dives deep into themes of forgiveness, self-discovery, and finding the courage to love despite differences and past wounds. The witty banter between the characters keeps the pacing lively, and their chemistry is palpable throughout. This novel is a perfect choice for anyone seeking a heartwarming and emotionally rich holiday escape.

This is coming out in the best possible way. Gabe and Roman are everything you would want out of a supportive and loving relationship. The protection, the yearning, right down to the laughter.

Gabe Cross is in credibly strong, coming out for the first time to not only his team, but truly to himself as he accepts that hes not broken. And THOSE QUIPS TO HIS MOTHER— OH LANTA. I’ll never be able to get “pull your cross out of your ass” or the “fire-breathing dragon” out of my head.

Roman, oh rom. Delish. That’s all I have to say.

Love this book, love this series. 10/10

Still drooling over the Christmas lights. IYKYK.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book, and I absolutely loved it. Roman and Gabe have my whole heart — they’re so precious together.

From the moment they first see each other, everything just clicks for both of them. I’m such a sucker for a grumpy man who’s soft for only one person, and Roman delivers that trope perfectly. Gabe is the sweetest soul and genuinely deserves all the love in the world, I loved watching his coming out journey and seeing these two fall in love.

The spice? Fantastic. A solid 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5.

This was the perfect Christmas gift for me, it's somehow both dirty and wholesome and it completely warmed my heart. Honestly this is the book that got me into hockey 🏒
Highly recommend for anyone wanting a cozy, spicy hockey MM romance. ❤️🏒❄️

I pucking loved Gabe and Roman.
I love hockey romance, and I love MM romance, put the two together and give it a joyful Christmas feel, and boom...

I love how Gabe evolves as a person, and how he finds a way to get out from under his mother's thumb, and how Roman is a constant source of love and support in his life.

This book made my heart so warm with love and excitement, it has the right amount of spice and cuteness to keep you wondering what will happen next.

And now I'm gonna have to finish this entire series.

I got this book as an ARC copy and I'm really thankful for that, I'm just sorry I'm late with my review.

She’s done it again!

Books 3 in the Willhurst Lynx Hockey Series!

I was so excited for this book and was very lucky to receive an ARC copy!

Gabriel and Roman are just couple goals, I loved hearing about them briefly in books 1 and 2 but getting to see their back story, with the instant attraction and the care and attention that they both give each other it was just wonderful to read. These two come up against a few bumps in the road, but in the end so long as they have each other, they will be doing just fine!

This series has been incredible, I am so excited to see what’s next and follow on for more from the Willhurst Lynx team 😍

**** ARC Review ****
3.75 ⭐️
I received an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for writing an honest review. This book gets started pretty quickly, they basically fell in love at first sight and fell hard. Gabe has an extremely religious family with controlling and meddling mother. This was a great comedy with a hockey spin on it. I really felt for Roman, he definitely had a hard time navigating the whole family situation. Especially with his teammates being so supportive. But in the end, love conquers all! I felt it was a little wordy, and I didn't enjoy all the "puck" and "pucking" play on words. It was a bit long for a romance and some of the chapters were super long. But, aside from that, if you love a M/M rom-com with great spice, this was an easy read, I think you'd enjoy it!

We start the story by finding out that Gabe is from a very religious family and because of that he hasn’t come out as being gay to anyone but his bestie Kelsie and the one guy he dated. He has these walls built up around his heart due to his upbringing and I felt bad for him. However those walls melt/fall along the way.
Gabe finally gets a spot on his dream pro hockey team and there he ends up meeting Rowan. From the moment they see each other there’s this instant pull. They both have this intense reaction to each other that neither of them have ever had with anyone else before. Their chemistry is off the charts. This story is fast paced; they meet and within a few days are dating. They have some hurdles they have to get through together and it’s all because of Gabe’s mother. All I will say is she’s a horrible, narcissistic woman and I cannot stand her(probably because I grew up with a narcissist father). His father wasn’t much better either. I did love his grandma though. She was so sweet and loving and supported him know matter what. She reminded me of the love my grandma showed everyone before she passed. I was so happy to see that Gabe had not only the support from Rowan, but also from the hockey entire team and staff. Rowan is a bit possessive over Gabe and he’s just the cutest when he’s jealous. But he also has a soft spot he shows just for Gabe. I loved everything about this book. From the swoon worthy moments, to the courage it took Gabe to come out and stand up to his mother, to them using the word PUCKING, to the happy ending.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

Roman and Gabe have permanently altered my brain chemistry and I will be thinking about them for the foreseeable future 😭❤️

This book had me keeling over laughing, clenching from the spice, and staring at the wall trying to process my emotions, sometimes all at once. From the moment they see each other, it’s immediate, intense, and impossible to look away from. I am a SUCKER for a grumpy man who is soft for exactly one person, and Roman absolutely eats that trope up and leaves no crumbs. He tries to be intimidating, but the second it comes to Gabe? Whipped beyond repair.

And Gabe… sweet, soft, kind, and deserving of every good thing in this world 🥹 Watching him navigate coming out, stand up for himself, and slowly realize he deserves love and support genuinely hurt in the best way. His growth felt tender and real, and it made every small victory feel massive.

Roman’s love for Gabe is patient, gentle, and deeply intentional. He moves at Gabe’s pace, respects every boundary, and supports him without ever pressuring him, which somehow made him even hotter?? And yes, him being nervous to meet Gabe’s grandma was criminally adorable and I will never shut up about it.

The spice? FILTHY but meaningful 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5.
This book is somehow dirty and wholesome, cozy and emotionally devastating. I laughed. I swooned. I cried. I got a book hangover.

Perfect cozy holiday read, fully responsible for getting me into hockey 🏒❄️

I want to thank Shelby Rae for the ARC. This is my honest opinion.

It is the holidays, and this M/M romance is absolutely perfect during this time. It is cozy and full of romance and holiday magic. Gabe finally gets to live out his dream of being on the Lynx Hockey Team, despite troubles at home, he finds a safe space with the team, and falls in love with his teammate, Roman. When Gabe and Roman first meet, it is love at first sight, coming together quickly, their relationship doesn't just spark, but it ignites. The love these two feel for each other is all-consuming, and I loved reading how they grow with eachother.

The story goes through the troubles of how some families are not as accepting as others. We get an inside look at the trouble Gabe goes through after being heartbroken and torn down. Reading how supportive Roman is towards Gabe, and how he helps him build himself back up and find out who he wants to be.

I absolutely loved this book. I only wish we got to see more of Gabe's healing journey and his new life with Roman.

Pucking Out was such a cute and enjoyable read and it was my first MM romance, which made it even more special. 💙 I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but this story completely won me over.

The chemistry between the characters felt natural and sweet, with just the right mix of humor, heart, and emotional moments. Their relationship development was easy to root for, and I loved how the story balanced romance with personal growth and vulnerability.

Overall, this was a fun, feel-good read that left me smiling when I finished. If you’re looking for a light, charming hockey romance or you’re curious about dipping your toes into MM romance like I was this one is definitely worth picking up. 🏒✨
