Betrayed, wounded, alone. When Mae said her vows, she lost everything. Not only was her new husband the one responsible for her family’s slaughter, but he is now the false king who sits on her throne, holding both the kingdom and Elle hostage. With an army of witches now poised to ravage her lands, Mae and her scattered allies must rally together to beat back the rising tide of black magic.
When Mae learns about Elle’s fate, she knows it is only a matter of time before Marik puts his malevolent plan into action. Unsure of whom to trust or how long they have, she works to build support from other Houses, treading a path fraught with even more danger and secrets, and finding friends in unexpected places. But forming a resistance to Marik’s reign of terror might prove harder than Mae ever imagined, especially while still picking up pieces of the heart he broke--a heart she desperately wants to give to the man who chose her above all else.
In order to survive the oncoming storm, Mae must fight back the shadows of self-doubt that have haunted her since the moment her world shattered. Can she summon the strength of a true queen, reclaim her throne, and protect those she loves before it is too late?
What do you mean this series decided it was new best friend the way it introduced itself to me and we connected?? This second edition to this series was like getting to know someone and finding a kindred spirit.
The development of these character's story, both as a whole and individually, is spectacularly written, thought-out, beautiful, paced incredibly well, and mesmerizing. The impact of the conflicts and the resolutions is engrossing.
The twists of the fantasy elements was so refreshing to read, it was what stood out to me the most. The ending was this immersive, stare at the wall to process and was truly what this story deserved and the perfect set up for the next one. I will anxiously be waiting.
The False Serpent King is a dark, immersive fantasy that pulls you into a world of deception, power, and dangerous ambition. From the very beginning, there’s an underlying tension that keeps building—layered with political intrigue, hidden identities, and morally complex characters.
What stands out most is the atmosphere. The story feels heavy with secrets, where trust is fragile and every decision carries consequences. The protagonist’s journey is compelling, shaped by inner conflict and external pressures that blur the line between right and wrong.
The writing is vivid and cinematic, making it easy to visualize the world and feel the weight of every betrayal and revelation. If you enjoy fantasy with darker tones, strategic mind games, and layered storytelling, this book delivers.
Holy smokes! I enjoyed the first book but this one blows it out of the water! Already I’m obsessed and can’t wait for book 3. The twists and turns in this I totally didn’t expect. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better it did. The character development was on point and I loved every minute of it. And our MMC, I’m in love with him. He’s my new book boyfriend! If you want a good story with incredible world building and characters you’ll fall in love with, this is the book for you. I’m already itching for more. I mean what was that ending?! This could end up being a new favorite series.
The cliffhanger that was left from The Lost Deer Queen had me appreciating that I was selected for an Advanced Readers Copy for this book. Thank you so much to the author for providing me with this book so I didn’t have to wait. That being said, I noticed right away this book had a darker tone than the first one, and that drew me in right away.
Possible spoilers ahead, be aware.
I enjoyed this book for the vibes and the magic system. There were some twists I guessed correctly, and some I didn’t see coming. I absolutely loved the multi POV from Elle, I felt like it added a lot of depth to her character and the story.
I will say I struggled with some of the trigger warnings. The dark magic in this series requires blood and/or self harm. At points, characters advise that using dark magic causes harm to your soul and can leave you a shell of a person. So I found it interesting that the main characters had no problem committing to this magic multiple times and I didn’t notice any real damage or harm that they experienced. Unlike one side character that noticeably struggled mentally after consistently using dark magic runes.
I also found it frustrating that Mae went through the same mental battles of trust/don’t trust and being extremely stubborn in situations that really required her to at least listen to the whole plan. I found myself wishing she could be the bigger person or see past her own thoughts and feelings to make better decisions for everyone that she is responsible for. I feel like she cares a lot for her friends but doesn’t have the ability to rationally create a plan on how to help them besides just being headstrong. I had a hard time relating to her in this book.
Overall, this book was good and I would recommend it to anyone that enjoyed The Lost Deer Queen. I personally struggled to connect to some characters and understand the pacing, still a good read that I would recommend.

WOW!!! The False Serpent King was an amazing sequel to The Lost Deer Queen. A much darker story than book 1, The False Serpent King follows Mae after the fall of the Deer Court and she loses her throne. While at first she feels defeated, she does get herself out of despair to grow into a strong High Queen. While Mae’s transformation is central to the plot of The False Serpent King, so are the revelations that come about. This novel is told in multiple POVs which is a switch from book 1 but definitely, a most needed switch. The multiple POVs give the reader insight on the growing crisis that affects the courts but also all the important characters. HJ Nichols does an amazing job in building up the intensity in this book which is such a huge contrast to book 1. I absolutely loved how The False Serpent King highlights how court and political intrigue can quickly change the situation of a community. Greed for power is a corruption that destroys not just a place but also the soul. And the soul is always what is at stake, especially when the only solution lies in bargains and deals of the soul. Most definitely a worthy read! I am excited to read book 3 and find out what happens to Mae and her newfound family.
This is an ARC review, thank you to the author for the opportunity to review this book!
If book one was 5*, then this definitely needs 6 because it is even better! The world building stays on point, and the character depth and growth is out of this world!
As Mae fights to both learn her magic and regain her throne, she just gets even more badass! And the additional POV's of Elle and Marik make the story flow even better too. This book adds even more elements of found family which is great. A few of the twists and reveals are predictable, but there are some jaw dropping ones too! And the battles are insanely epic!
HJ Nichols had a great debut with The Lost Deer Queen, but its sequel blows it out of the water.
The False Serpent King takes every question and loose end from book one and expands upon them, weaving a truly intricate web of stories, legends, characters, motives, and settings.
Gone are the cozy vibes from book one – The False Serpent King is a tale of desperation and war.
It is rare that I'm surprised by a twist these days, but HJ Nichols greatly impressed me by teasing a Fae romantasy with Bachelorette vibes, and then blindsided me with a political high fantasy with impossibly high stakes and twist after twist.
Prophecies, witches, Fae, demons, fated mates, enemies to allies, friendship, family secrets, and the most FRUSTRATING romance… it's all here.
I highly recommend The False Serpent King. Just do yourself a favor and read book one first.
I am desperately awaiting book 3.
⭐⭐⭐⭐¾
Thank you HJ Nichols for the advance readers copy ✨
I applied to be an ARC reader for this novel and was thrilled when I was selected. TLDQ was such a beautifully done story with memorable characters and such a fantastical world. TFSK built off that magic and did not disappoint.
TFSK had me constantly questioning my gut instincts about characters. Twists and turns throughout the novel kept me up late at night, needing to read more. Throughout this story we watch the FMC, Mae, grow and adapt to her new role as High Queen without a throne to rule from. Her family story starts to unravel. Mae also continues to learn the extent of her power while she is faced with different trials and tribulations, testing the loyalties of everyone around her.
I'm in love with this world and can't wait to return and hopefully learn more about Mae's family and her fate. I'd love to dig deeper into the other houses and the other High Princes.
I still do have suspicions after finishing the book... and I'm unsure if that makes me un-trusting or smart? After all, deception is the Serpent Princes most infamous trait.

The False Serpent King by H.J. Nichols [ARC REVIEW] ★★★★★ 5/5 stars Release date: February 25th, 2026
When love, lies, fate, and freedom all hang in the balance, is one woman really strong enough to carry it all?
IF YOU LIKE: • A rich, imaginative Fae world • Multiple (unexpected!) POVs • Prophecies and fate • Betrayal, fear, and overcoming both • Political intrigue and rebellion • Passion, romance, devotion, and yearning YOU’LL LOVE The False Serpent King
≪ “And I realized you’re not meant to hide. You’re meant to fight, to lead, to protect. I want to be beside you for all of it, if you’ll have me.” ≫
HIGHLIGHTS: • Mae Bailey → This poor woman has been through the ringer, but there are threads of steel inside her that bolster her soul. She forces herself to be bold, powerful, and decisive—but we get to see just how anxious she is, just how much terror boils underneath it all. Through this book, Mae becomes the true owner and arbiter of her own fate (ironically enough): she claims her role, she claims her power, she claims her crown, and she claims her love. Every setback makes her stronger, every loss feeds her determination, every doubt inspires her to even more bravery… but this isn’t some vapid empowerment fantasy. Mae is a real, fully-formed, highly-flawed, and extremely relatable character. I loved her in The Lost Deer Queen: I WORSHIP her now. She deserves the entire world, and I’m absolutely sticking around to see her earn it.
• Elle and Marik → I WAS NOT EXPECTING ELLE’S POV! TLDQ was written entirely in Mae’s POV, and the synopsis for TFSK doesn’t even hint at a secondary story. I was blindsided by Elle’s storyline in the best possible way… and then Marik got the spotlight. The psychological tension in the Deer Court chapters was intense, horrible… and beautifully compelling. I hated Marik as much as Elle did, and I enjoyed Elle’s defiance as much as Marik did, and part of me was desperate for more, more, more. I was 100% complicit in that destructive, terrible, beautiful dynamic, and I couldn’t look away. I didn’t WANT to look away… and I was rewarded for paying attention.
• The Big Twist(s) → This will be vague in order to avoid giving spoilers: The Big Twist was absolutely perfect. I am normally something of a sleuth when it comes to big reveals like that: this one shocked me. I had a legitimate “HOLY SHIT?!” moment. And it made perfect sense. Every bit of it was built into the narrative and all the clues were there; not just in TFSK, but in the first book as well. It is extremely evident that this reveal, this massively important truth, has been planned from the very beginning of this series. Nichols has built up to this moment in tiny details that all tumble together to knock you off your feet… and then drag you further into the depths of this world as even more dominoes start to fall into place. There are multiple revelations in TFSK, and each one lands with precision.
• The depth of the worldbuilding → Every aspect of the Woodland Kingdom seems planned, plotted, and designed to be logical, consistent, and engaging. The politics are complicated but coherent, echoing real life challenges without ever feeling like a direct allegory. The history and mythology are layered and handled with a degree of nuance that feels incredibly real: myths are misinterpreted, have multiple versions due to being passed down orally, or often just aren’t known at all, while history is clearly written by the victors and leads to unconscious biases and misinformation. The magic system is robust, detailed, and perfectly consistent. There is a reason for every power, and it all functions exactly the same way every time. Not only are the details of this kingdom meticulously planned, but they’re also revealed at a perfect pace; no heavy exposition nor leaving questions unanswered for too long. So much thought has gone into the world, and it jumps out at you on every single page.
≪ Did t(he)y damage your heart so terribly? Did t(he)y kill what’s mine? ≫
WISHLIST: • Asmo’s POV → I would have loved to delve into his voice! When we got the first Marik chapter, I almost screamed—I was so excited. I hoped we would get to go into Asmo’s head, as well; but the ARC copy at least had bonus chapters from The Lost Deer Queen in his POV… which I hope means we’ll be getting more in the next book.
≪ I am the Queen of the Forest, of the trees and the flora and the fauna and the storms that ravage them. I was created by Mother Nature. I am born of all things that make this world, and therefore, I am the master of all that is born of this world. ≫

*I received an Advance Review Copy of this book from the author
After that brutal cliffhanger in the previous book, there was absolutely no way I wasn’t diving straight into The False Serpent King — and honestly, it delivered exactly what I was hoping for and more.
One of my favorite aspects of this installment is finally getting Elle’s perspective. Seeing the story unfold through her eyes adds so much depth, especially when it comes to understanding the darker realities of King Marik’s rule. It gives readers a front-row seat to the morally gray decisions, the political tension, and the emotional weight behind everything happening in court. The added insight makes the stakes feel higher and the characters far more human.
The relationship development in this book really shines — especially between Asmo and Mae. Chapter 19 completely stole my heart. Their emotional vulnerability felt raw and earned, culminating in one of the most powerful confessions in the series so far:
“I left everything behind for you. I should have made that decision sooner, but you have to understand that my entire life has been my court. I grew up thinking I’d be placed in a loveless marriage to someone my parents chose. I never expected… you. Every interaction with you left me wanting more. And that was terrifying for me. That’s not how my life was supposed to go. But what terrified me more was being without you.”
That moment perfectly captures the emotional core of the story — duty versus desire, fear versus love. And can we talk about Elle for a second? Because she absolutely commands the page. One of my favorite scenes is when she steps fully into her power and reminds everyone exactly who she is:
“I am your queen. I may not be on the throne, but I will return to it one day: you do not touch another member of my court again, you do not touch another female again, you do not point a finger at me, and you do not insult my intelligence or virtues again. If you have a problem with me, you can speak to me respectfully.”
Honestly — iconic. I was cheering.
What surprised me most, though, was Marik’s character development. Watching him struggle between darkness and redemption adds a fascinating layer to the story. He’s no longer just a ruler making ruthless choices; he’s a man actively deciding who he wants to become. And I can’t help but feel that Elle is pulling him toward the light. Their dynamic raises so many questions — including whether there’s a possible budding romance forming between them. The tension is undeniable, and I’m completely invested to see where it leads.
Overall, The False Serpent King balances political intrigue, emotional growth, and relationship development beautifully. The characters feel richer, the conflicts more personal, and the emotional stakes higher than ever. If this book proves anything, it’s that redemption and power can coexist — but only if the characters are brave enough to choose who they want to be.
And after that ending? I’m already desperate for the next book.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75/5 (rounding up for fun) Spice: 🌶️🌶️/5
Tropes: Enemies to (sort of) lovers, elemental magic, prophecies and fate, found family, the chosen one, morally grey MMCs, multiple POVs, forced proximity, political intrigue/rebellion, fated mates
"Being next to you feels right. It's always felt right. Even if you were the villain in this story, I'd still choose to be next to you." "You're meant to fight, to lead, to protect. I want to be beside you for all of it, if you'll have me." "If I don't start believing in myself, who will? "Thank you...for telling me I'm enough." "We fight for what is right...Someone once told me that goodness is worth protecting, so today, we fight for goodness."
This review is an honest opinion in exchange for an early ARC copy of The False Serpent King (thank you to the author for letting me be a part of this team). Book 2 of the Woodland Kingdom series picks up right where The Lost Deer Queen ends, with Mae and a handful of friends in hiding after her disastrous wedding day. "Trust no one" is indeed accurate, as the life she had just been thrown into falls apart in absolute shambles-the family she grew up with is not who they seem to be (vague to avoid spoilers), and her now husband is a cruel con-artist who has broken her heart, murdered her family and stolen the throne.
This book has a decidedly different (more intense and less playful) vibe from the first but manages to keep the reader engaged and invested throughout the story. The gravity of everything that's happened and what lies before her forces Mae to overcome her self-doubt and be the strong and capable leader she was destined to become. If I didn't love her already, I absolutely would now--she is all you could want in a FMC, witty, relatable, flawed, courageous, bold, and loyal to a fault. Her integrity and dedication to her friends, family, lover and kingdom is powerful to watch as it develops, and she perfectly embodies the head of the rebellion and rightful heir to the throne.
The multiple POVs and another massive plot twist (I didn't think I could be surprised again after the last book but boy was I wrong) add even more to the fantastic storytelling. The plot is unique and well paced, loose ends are addressed (or left open for book 3), and I can't wait to see what happens next. Another fantastic book this author, highly recommend!
I am not emotionally the same person I was before reading this! This series continues to escalate in the best (and most emotionally violent) way.
The first book laid the foundation for everything, but book two raised the political and emotional stakes to an entirely different level. For me, there was constant tension and every time I thought I had a handle on where the plot was headed, the author shifted the ground beneath my feet. I found myself flipping each page both desperate to know what happened next and slightly afraid of what I would find waiting for me. This was the kind of book that had me highlighting passages, flipping back to earlier chapters (and even back to the first book), and jotting down notes just to keep track of subtle hints. I haven’t annotated a fantasy novel this much in a long time.
The multi-POV structure elevates everything. Seeing events unfold from multiple sides, including characters whose motives are anything but simple, doesn’t just answer questions; it creates new ones. Every chapter feels like it’s pulling a different thread, and by the midpoint, the entire tapestry starts to unravel.
The character development and dynamics are where the story truly takes off. Trust, loyalty, protection, betrayal, power - all of them come in shades of gray that were very complex. There are revelations in this book that genuinely reframe what we thought we understood, and I had to pause more than once just to sit there and process what had just happened.
Without spoiling anything: if you think you've got it all figured out at 55%, you absolutely do not.
And then there are moments like this:
"Did he damage your heart so terribly? [...] Did he kill what's mine?"
I am emotionally wrecked, already desperate for the next installment, and fully invested in seeing how these threads unravel. If you love high-stakes fantasy with intricate politics, morally complicated characters, and twists that genuinely surprise you - this series is absolutely worth your time.
Thank you for the advance copy - I’m already counting down to the next installment.
“Every muscle in my body strains to turn back… to scream and cry and hand him my heart and beg him to fix it. To put back the piece he stole from it. But I can’t. I have a kingdom to lead. My heart can wait.”
✨ Fated mates ✨ Banter & yearning ✨ One bed ✨ Found family ✨ Magic & rebellion ✨ Prophecy ✨ Multiple POV
This picks up exactly where book one ends, straight back into the fallout. Mae is betrayed, grieving, and still forced to lead. The emotional weight carries, especially with everything at stake and the throne hanging in the balance.
The multiple perspectives really work here. They deepen the politics, the prophecy threads, and the rising rebellion without slowing the pace. The world-building feels rich and layered, and even if you think you can sense where something might be heading, you can’t.
“The chemistry between us is undeniable, but so is the friction.”
The romance though? Agonising. Yearning-heavy. Banter-laced. Frustrating in the way that makes you want to scream at the page but keep turning it anyway. Fate is pulling strings, but nothing is simple, and the tension stretches beautifully across the book.
“He pulls me back to him, and this embrace feels different than the last. This feels like two lovers holding each other in the middle of a storm.”
There’s found family, fractured trust, and alliances shifting under pressure. It feels bigger in scope, more dangerous, more politically charged.
“Even if you were the villain in this story, I’d still choose to be next to you.”
If you like prophecy-driven fantasy with emotional stakes, rebellion energy, and a romance that makes you work for it, this one delivers.
“If you’re ever taken from me again, I will burn the world down to get you back. And that is a promise to you, and a promise to anyone who thinks of it.”
Chaos, vibes, and opinions are all my own ✨ please give credit if you share. ✨
The False Serpent King took my feelings, shook them violently, and then ended right when I was least emotionally prepared.
This book had me completely torn in the best way. On one hand, I was so invested—especially in the romance. The tension, the emotional weight, the push and pull… it worked. It really worked. Those moments were the heart of the story for me and kept me turning pages even when I was internally screaming.
On the other hand… Mae. Her character arc frustrated me deeply. After everything that happened in book one—being thrown into power, making devastating mistakes. I wanted more growth, more humility, more listening. Instead, watching her lean into the “I’m the High Queen, don’t question me” mindset, especially in how she treats the people around her, was honestly hard to read at times. Not because it was badly written but because it felt like watching a slow-motion train wreck you know could’ve been avoided.
There were choices made in this book that had me staring at the page like, “I understand why you did that… but also WHY would you do that???” And the fallout from those choices? Painful. Messy. Compelling.
The villains? Truly villain-ing. Let’s just say some outcomes were satisfying, even if everything else emotionally was on fire.
And then there are the reveals. The lies. The betrayals. The destiny bombs that get dropped like it’s nothing. I was not okay. I closed this book upset, invested, and very aware that I did NOT emotionally prepare myself for the fact that this is not the end of the story.
Am I frustrated? Yes. Am I emotionally compromised? Also yes. Am I absolutely reading book three? obviously, yes.
If you like romantasy that makes you feel things, yell at characters, and immediately need the next book even while you’re mad about it—this one will get you.
Thank you to H.J. Nichols for gifting me a review copy! This has in no way influenced my reading experience.
The False Serpent King picks up shortly where we left off at the end of the Lost Deer Queen, and I was still reeling from the events of the last few chapters. The tonal shift from the first book was a whiplash to say the least. It's darker and more gritty. The stakes were high and clear. We also got additional POV chapters from Elle (my fav character since from the first book!) and Marik.
I was invested with the characters from the first book, so of course I loved the character growth / regression in this one. We got to know more about the supporting characters from the first book as well and their personalities shined, which I loved. Everyone has some darker edge to them, all things considered. Some have become unrecognizable. Mae still makes me wanna throttle her lol.
The writing has definitely improved. It got me on the edge of my seat every time a chapter ends. I had issues with it in the first book, and I still do on this one, but at least I'm enjoying it this time. I'm a huge fan of the vibes, worldbuilding, and the politics of it all, so I was glad we're seeing more of it here. Admittedly it's flawed and could use a little depth, but I liked the concept nonetheless!!
The plot holes were glaring, though. Any attempts to cover it felt weak and unconvincing in my opinion. Although some caught me off guard, I was not fan of some plot twists either because it felt unearned. I also didn't like the dark romance subplot (I'm not a huge fan of the genre at all) and it made me uncomfortable reading all that.
Overall, I'm still seated for the third book because what tf was that.
I also still have a lot to say about this book so maybe a full (and more polished) review will come soon!
This sequel feels darker, heavier in tone and sharper in execution. We pick up right there in the wreckage of The Lost Deer Queen.
There’s this constant tension between fate and free will, Mae is still headstrong, still stubborn, still struggling with trust… but that internal conflict feels intentional. She is a queen trying to rise from devastation, and growth isn’t linear.
The multiple POVs were such a strong choice. Getting inside other characters’ heads expanded the emotional weight of the story.
𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 : ★ ★ ★ ★ / 𝟓 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞 : ♥︎ ♥︎ ♥︎ / 𝟓
But the real standout for me was Elle.
Her POV adds a layer of psychological intensity that the first book didn’t have. Watching her navigate captivity, powerlessness, hatred, and the slow burn of something darker, her chapters carried so much emotional weight.
Malik’s dynamic adds tension that is equal parts unsettling and compelling. There’s a volatile energy there, despair mixed with dominance… hot however unstable that makes me.
Asmos, meanwhile, shows us more vulnerability this time. His devotion is clear. His love is clear. But the deception? Had me rolling we learn so many things in this installment!!
The lore expansion was wild. Secrets planted in the first book start blooming into something much bigger, And that ending… it offers just enough light to make you nervous for the next book.
🐍x🦌 Serpent Prince x Fallen High Deer Queen 🏃♀️ On the Run 🗺️ Adventure ⚔️ Warring Kingdoms ❤️🔥 Second Chance 🔮 Prophecy 💫 Magical Realm 🐺 Hybrids 🤫 Secrets 🫶 Found Family 🏛️ Political Intrigue 💔 Angst & Yearn ✨ Fated Mates
This book was a whirlwind of twists and turns and constant adventure - it takes place immediately after the events of Book One and I’m not sure what I was expecting to happen but let’s just say everything DID happen and more! Not only did we get to spend a lot more time with Mae and Asmo (make him beg, girl) but there’s another couple to ship now?? What? I did not hate that. In fact, I welcome that 😏 And I loved that we got to leave the Deer Court and visit the other Houses. I wish we got to spend more time in each House even but then of course the book would be even longer than it is 😅 There’s so much crammed in here sometimes I wished it would slow down which is rare for me to say as most books have the opposite problem of simply dragging on and on, but other than that I enjoyed this read and am looking forward to Book Three!
"In order to survive the oncoming storm, Mae must fight back the shadows of self-doubt that have haunted her since the moment her world shattered. Can she summon the strength of a true queen, reclaim her throne, and protect those she loves before it is too late?”
“The False Serpent King” is Book Two in the Woodland Kingdom Series and comes out tomorrow February 25!
Thank you so much to H.J. Nichols for the ARC opportunity 🫶✨
The Lost Serpent King by H. J. Nichols delivered everything I hoped for and then went far beyond my expectations. From the very first chapter, I was completely pulled into a richly built world filled with danger, mystery, power, and emotion. The storytelling is immersive, the pacing is strong, and every scene feels intentional—nothing is wasted. One of the most satisfying aspects of this book is how thoughtfully the story unfolds. Questions raised earlier in the narrative are not forgotten or brushed aside—instead, every lingering question is answered, and it’s done in a way that feels natural, rewarding, and deeply earned. There’s a sense of trust between the author and the reader here, and Nichols absolutely honors that trust. The characters are compelling and layered, carrying both strength and vulnerability in ways that make them feel real and unforgettable. Their journeys are intense, emotional, and often surprising, keeping me fully invested from beginning to end. The tension builds beautifully, and the stakes never stop rising. And that ending? Immaculate. The conclusion was amazingly done—powerful, satisfying, and perfectly executed. It tied everything together while still leaving me breathless and wanting more. It’s the kind of ending that makes you sit back, stare at the page, and immediately think, wow… that was worth every second. This was, without a doubt, a five-star read. H. J. Nichols gave more than expected—more depth, more emotion, more payoff—and I am beyond excited to see what comes next. I cannot wait for the next installment and will be counting the days until I can return to this world again. 🐍👑🔥
I received this book as a ARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you H.J. Nichols!
I loved how this book continued on from where it stopped in the first book. I felt like the flow of the book was much smoother than the first. It was probably because Mae was stepping into who she was and we were getting ANSWERS! Yet I still have so many more questions!
It starts out with Mae recovering from her injury and in hiding. You learn that they all ran but Elle is still under the thumb of Marik and the witch. We learn that they haven't tried to do anything but survive at this point. Over a couple of weeks Mae starts getting restless and wants start doing something, anything to get back control of her people and kingdom. It's a battle that seems hopeless at first but Mae isn't willing to give up with the help of her people and Asmo they fight for what they believe in.
There is so much I want to say but I don't want to ruin it for anyone. Mae showed so much growth. Throughout the book she stepped into who she was and became strong as the book continued. She believes in herself and stops allowing doubts to crowd her mind. I just hate that she can't get a break, even though she is trying so hard to come out on top! I love her and Asmo! Their relationship was so good, the build up of chemistry everything was just perfect! I really enjoyed the world expanding, seeing of courts, even if its just for a little bit. I am excited to explore the worlds even more and seeing places that we might not expect.
The ending ruined me.
But I loved that we got bonus chapters at the end! because Yes please! I won't spoil that too but it was really, really good! I am looking forward to the third book, cannot wait to read it!!
This book picks up immediately after The Lost Deer Queen. And the aftermath of book one is NOT forgotten. There is struggle and grief. And our FMC, Mae, is spiraling with shame and guilt, making her feel painfully human.
One of the differences in book two is that it’s written in multiple POVs— a FANTASTIC supplement to the growth of the story and adds delicious depth & complication.
The relationships (and revelations) in this book are messy but crazy relatable. There is insecurity and doubt, laced with lust and need. It’s fast & intense, with push and pull, but raw honesty when it’s necessary. All of it gives way to something deeper, darker, and completely unbound. However, the higher they rise, the further they fall.
That said, the fallout from the choices in this book are painful. The addiction to power, questionable calls, and a yearning for redemption was like witnessing a car crash in slow motion. Emotionally brutal.
The villains are villain-ing. The fate bombs drop casually. The reveals stack layer after layer. I finished the book frustrated, slightly unwell, and undoubtedly invested for book three.
*Thank you to H.J. Nichols for this arc opportunity.
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I went into The False Serpent King already knowing this world had layers... but this one raised the stakes even more. The tension, the politics, the shifting loyalties and everything feels heavier here. Watching the characters navigate power, trust, and betrayal kept me turning the pages because nothing is ever as simple as it seems in this kingdom. Loved how the story keeps expanding the world we were introduced to in The Lost Deer Queen. Secrets start surfacing, alliance are tested, and you can feel the weight of the crown and what it costs to hold power. If you enjoy fantasy with court intrigue, hidden truths, morally grey choices, and characters trying to survive a dangerous kingdom, this one definitely delivers. And the ENDINGGGGGGG...
Oh man, where do I even begin? I am truly flabbergasted at the ending, there were so many unexpected twists and turns that I was eating up non stop. I never saw a single thing coming and I usually do. 🫣 I cannot wait to see what happens next. 🥺
I'm so in love with how everything ties together from the first book, the magic is still so cool and intriguing to me, I'm in love with the woodland creatures, the pure yearning coming from a certain someone at all times. 😭 I felt such a connection to Mae in the first book (The lost deer queen) but man I felt so much more connected to her in this one because of how hard she fought at all times regardless of how hopeless she felt. She truly climbed from the darkness and made it her bitch. 🥲
We get a new point of view that I was not expecting but so incredibly glad we got it. 🥲 I can't say much without spoiling anything but Elle has my heart and my soul, her and Mae are one to be reckoned with and I feel myself in both of them. The mental health aspect of these books will always be my favorite thing, I've never connected with a book in that regard until I read these, I feel so seen and not so alone in many ways because of how mental health, grief, and the pure fight to survive because you have to, is portrayed. The lost deer queen and the false serpent king will be a huge part of me forever and I will never not immediately recommend reading both of them. ❤️🔥
I absolutely loved this book, even more than the first! My biggest (almost only) qualm with Woodland Kingdom #1 was the writing would sometimes fall short for such a grand story, but this book went above and BEYOND to fix that!
Mae grew so much throughout this story, and watching her find her voice throughout this book was so compelling. She developed so much confidence and so much more certainty in herself that I was so glad to see. I loved how her and Asmo's relationship developed as well, not diminishing their own individual characters while becoming supplementary to each other.
My absolute favorite part about this story is that EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER was developed with so much love. Elle had such an intriguing situation that I'm so excited to see more of in the series to come. Ivan, Holly, and Luca all played such integral parts in the story - Ivan makes such a lovely father figure for this found family.
For anyone that wanted to see more of the world that was built-up so well in #1, this book dives so deeply into the other courts and settings. The plethora of different settings we get to see make the story so immersive and mystical. The whimsy level was through the roof.
This story was full of twists and turns around every corner, with absolutely no shortage of action. It has me so excited for Woodland Kingdom #3. If you want a magical story with a unique magical system, action, beautiful world-building, and fantastic characters, this is for you.
The False Serpent King By H. J. Nichols ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ H.J. Nichols’ The False Serpent King is a masterclass in atmospheric world-building and moral ambiguity. The story plunges readers into a realm where the lines between divinity and deception are dangerously blurred. We follow Mae’s harrowing journey as she navigates a landscape steeped in ancient lore and political treachery, all while her former husband—the titular "Serpent King," Marik—claims the throne he stole through the slaughter of her family. Nichols excels at building tension, weaving a plot that feels like a slow-burning fuse leading to an explosive, high-stakes confrontation. The true strength of this novel lies in its complex character dynamics. Mae is a refreshingly flawed heroine, driven by a mix of survival instinct and a deeply buried sense of justice that keeps you rooting for her even when she makes questionable choices. Marikis a fascinating villain; he isn't a cardboard-cutout, but a charismatic, enigmatic presence whose malevolent plans and shifting motivations are revealed in tantalizing layers. With its lush prose and a magic system that feels both ancient and unpredictable, this is a must-read for fans of dark, epic fantasy who enjoy questioning the "truth" behind every legend.
10/10 Would recommend this book to all family and friends.
After her disaster of a wedding and un-welcomed wedding gift from Marik, Mae is fighting for her life, court and heart. Finding herself with an “ enemy” and a few allies she has to fight her way home. While fighting the wrongs that were happening in her own kingdom Mae finds new allies in unexpected places and unexpected faces.
Marik and Cora have taken the throne and with some unwilling help from a captive they have now made the entire kingdom believe that “Mae” approved and wanted all of these changes. From witches being pushed in every independent kingdom scaring and killing the citizens and livestock. To a tithe that no one wanted and was unprecedented. While some of the ruling houses welcome the changes and witches, others choose not to.
When prophecies are foretold and hidden identities revealed life changes not just for Mae but for Amos, Marik and everyone involved. With the kingdom’s future on the line everyone must fight for their lives and the lives of those whom they love.
This book was such a delight to read! From page one to the last page I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. After book one I craved book two and this book was what I needed. The ending left me with questions and frustrations and so much more. I can’t wait for book three!

Thank you to the author for providing an advanced copy. The following reflects my honest opinion.
I went to this book straight from The Last Deer Queen. The beginning was strong and well paced, but as the story progressed the things that bothered me started piling up.
First of all, there was a lot of repetition. The characters seemed very stuck in certain thoughts and views. As someone who struggles with their mental health, I get it, but these repetitive, destructive thoughts seemed to be present in every single POV the story swapped between and it was growing tiresome. After I reached the halfway point I had to start skimming because I simply couldn’t find myself focusing on the book anymore.
The timeline seemed odd at times and jumpy. At one point it seems that it had only been a couple of weeks since previous events happened but then suddenly it was months.
The building blocks were there and the plot itself was compelling, I just personally feel like the book could’ve been compressed quite a bit because it was somewhat all over the place as it was.
Overall not what I would necessarily call a bad read, and I imagine people who enjoy high stakes could find this book appealing.
🐍The False Serpent King 👑 by H.J. Nichols ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
✨What another great book by H.J. Nichols!! Thank you to H.J. Nichols for the opportunity to be an ARC reader for The False Serpent King! 🫶
⚕️The False Serpent King is the second book in The Woodland Kingdom Series. Book 2 starts off right where book 1 ended and doesn’t slow down. This book gave me the opportunity to learn more about the other houses and their respective courts.
I love Mae’s continued development. She is becoming a B.A. High Queen👸 The Serpent Princes continue to be a sexy problem and I can’t even be mad about it!
TFSK continued to keep me on my toes throughout the whole book. I have whiplash from the amount of surprises! Just like TlDQ, the TFSK ends on a MAJOR cliffhanger. If you were wondering, I am very much UNWELL.
I cannot wait for what is to come in this series! The False Serpent King is out this week February 25th! 🎉
TFSK contains the following: * Self-harm * Suicide ideation * Suicide attempts * Death * Graphic violence * Dubious consent * Trauma * PTSD * Discussion of child abuse (off-page to establish character arcs) * Explicit language * Explicit sexual content * Anxiety * Depression
It doesn’t happen often, but every now and then you get to read a sequel that is even better than the original. That is exactly what happened with The False Serpent King by H.J. Nichols! I loved The Lost Deer Queen, but this book was phenomenal!
I can’t say much without giving away spoilers for book 1 but I can confidently say this was a total rollercoaster in the best way! The twists and turns, the high-stakes adventure, the love and lies, the aching yearning, just all of it. This book left me surprised, frustrated and absolutely feral for book 3.
We get to see so much more of the world in TFSK, which is so well put together. Exploring the other courts adds such depth without slowing down the story line. The character development and the way the relationships are evolving feels so natural and real. One of my favorite additions was getting the new POVs. Getting perspectives other than just Mae’s, adds many layers to the story and deepens the emotional impact.
Overall, TFSK is darker, more intense, and so much more emotional than The Lost Deer Queen. And it exceeded every expectation that I had after finishing TLDQ. I really feel like I have discovered one of my new favorite authors.
The story, the characters, the magic, the romance...all of it amazing.
There will be spoilers in the review but I will hide them so you can read it without worrying :)
The False Serpent King picks up right where The Lost Deer Queen leaves off. The group in in hiding and on the run to Cora and Marik don't find them.
I'm glad that we got to see Mae struggling and not just gloss over everything that happened. It allowed the reader to connect with her more. She had very real (and human) feelings about everything that happened. To go along that journey with her made you understand her a little better.
Characters → the multiple POV's we got was a good choice. Seeing the story from just Mae's perspective didn't allow you to fully understand what was going on because she didn't. Exploring more characters this time around was the right choice - especially with the characters H.J. chose.
Romance → Asmo & Mae's relationship had a very raw and real development. You can't expect everything to take a head dive into the water after the wedding and betrayal they both dealt with. I think the pace and growth of their relationship made sense and was good for the story. It was tasteful and believable.
Conclusion → the ending?!?! You can sort of guess it halfway through the book but there's no way to guess all the reveals/details. It still held that shock factor that I personally need to fully enjoy a fantasy book. If I can guess the ending too easily, it's not above a 3-star read.
⇰In the end, I enjoyed this as much as the first book. If you couldn't guess by now — there's going to be a 3rd. I will be waiting, frothing at the mouth for it!🥰
