This was alright. It is a romantic suspense set in Louisiana. It is very quick, pretty easy to follow, with some spice, some romance, and lots of suspense and trying to figure out who the villain is. I did guess the villain pretty quickly but it was still good to see how that played out. The FMC is a math student working on her dissertation. The MMC is in his residency term at the local er. The FMC and MMC know each other from when they were younger though. We didn’t learn much about the side characters, but I did like them.

⚜️ A Bayou Romance with Brains, Banter & Suspense ⚜️
⭐⭐⭐⭐ | 🌶️

A Not So Simple Equation was such a fun, fast-paced romantic suspense that I flew through in no time. Between the Louisiana setting, childhood crush romance, protective hero, and light mystery, this was an entertaining read that balanced humor, romance, and suspense really well.

One of my favorite parts of this book was the setting. Gigi Hodge brings Louisiana to life with authentic Creole culture, family dynamics, Mardi Gras celebrations, and local vernacular that made me feel like I was right there alongside the characters. The atmosphere added so much personality to the story and made it stand out from other romantic suspense novels.

Hale and Tasha were such a sweet pair. Tasha is brilliant, hardworking, and completely focused on earning her doctorate, making romance the last thing on her mind. Hale, meanwhile, quickly became my favorite character. Protective without being overbearing, caring without expecting anything in return, and always willing to step in when Tasha needed him, he was exactly the kind of hero I enjoy reading. Watching their childhood connection slowly grow into something more felt natural, and I especially loved how his actions consistently showed just how much he cared for her.

The suspense kept me engaged throughout the story as someone seemed determined to sabotage Tasha's research and put her in danger. I enjoyed trying to piece together the mystery alongside the characters, even though I started suspecting the culprit around the halfway point. The fast pacing kept everything moving, although there were a few moments where I wished some scenes had been given a little more room to breathe emotionally.

The supporting cast was another highlight. Tasha's sisters, hilarious group chats, meddling families, and loyal friends brought so much warmth and humor to the story that they almost stole the spotlight. I'm already hoping several of the side characters eventually get stories of their own because they added so much life to this world.

If you're looking for a quick romantic suspense with a protective doctor hero, a brilliant heroine, found family, childhood friends, and a touch of mystery wrapped in Southern charm, A Not So Simple Equation is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

This book had me so engrossed that I couldn't stop reading it until I was finished with it. Tasha is trying to get her PHD, thinking that she has no time for romaThisnce and her life is ordinary until her world is turned upside down. Her life changes and spirals when her professor "dies". She is put with a professor that is unethical at best. When he tries to get her alone, she is smart enough not to go alone, for good reason. That night starts a chain of events that sends her to the hospital reintroducing her to a school crush who is not only a family friend but also a doctor. Hale's psycho girlfriend doesn't take rejection well and hurts Tasha, which may not be proven. His mother tells him he has to make sure Tasha is safe, so he steps up and protects her by moving her in with him. After weeks of living together the sexual tension between them is so thick everyone could feel it. What happens when she let's herself go and gives into temptation? Can Hale keep his focus and promise to protect her while fighting the need to become her lover?
As she gets closer to the end of her class someone doesn't want her to finish her thesis, tries multiple times to kill her and get her work. The hard part is finding who she can trust and who doesn't have her best interest in mind. She has a small circle of friends that would burn the world down for her, but could a new addition to the group be her undoing? I almost cried when Hale was injured protecting Tasha. He learns a secret she had been keeping, and makes the decision he wants her forever, but what will her old fashioned daddy say when he finds out the secret they have been keeping? During her final meeting with the college board she finds out the unethical professor had stolen her patented work and sold it to a company. She brings everything to light about her patents and his fraud, but at what cost? Just when they think they know who is behind all of the attempts on her life, she soon discovers she was wrong. Thank goodness Hale built her a fortress of a room to hide in for protection, because I was floored when the bad guy is revealed, and the lengths he will go to for the information her work holds. Will she get out of this alive? Will her and Hale have their happy ever after? You will have to read and find out. I definitely recommend this book.

This was a cute, quick read. It was very fast paced, and not overly descriptive, which I like in a novella. Tasha is a mousy, brainy grad student, working on her thesis on something that I don't understand in math. Suddenly her main professor dies, and everything with her dissertation is thrown in array after she is assigned the creepiest Dr in the program. At her first appointment with him, she is attacked, making her distrust everyone but her closest friends.

Enter Hale, the ER Dr who just happens to be her childhood crush, and secretly loaded. After running into Tasha a couple times, including in the ER, he becomes invested in making sure she stays safe. When she is attacked again, he figures she might as well just move in with him, where he can be assured of her wellbeing.

This book has a lot going on. There is a hilarious friend group, a second chance with the childhood crush, suspense and intrigue, math that might fly over your head, and more.

I think my favorite thing about it, is the way you can feel the creole in the pages. The vernacular is very accurate for the area, and you can really feel like you are there in Louisiana, with the weather, and the architecture and the people. It takes place from fall through Mardi Gras, so you also get a sense of the way they party and celebrate every chance they get. I enjoyed feeling like I was visiting such a unique place.

This book will be good for you if you like found family, meddling parents, light suspense, an MMC who takes good care of his woman, and feeling like you are transported to a new place for a few hours.

A Not So Simple Equation by Gigi Hodge is a fast-paced, romantic suspense read that kept me hooked from start to finish!

The story follows Tasha, a PhD student trying to finish her dissertation while dealing with a series of mysterious threats. Enter Hale—her longtime friend and a wealthy doctor thanks to a smart investment—who steps in as her protective bodyguard. With their families already eager to play matchmaker, staying under the same roof creates the perfect storm for sparks to fly.

What Worked:

Fast-Paced & Engaging: I flew through this book in just two days! Even though the scene transitions felt a bit abrupt at times, the momentum kept me completely focused on the story.

Fun Mystery Element: I love a touch of suspense in my romance, and it was fun trying to guess the culprit (I had my suspicions locked in by the halfway mark!).

Surprising & Entertaining: Going in, I expected a "studious girl x happy-go-lucky boy" dynamic when it was described as a nerdy romance. Instead, it leaned heavily into literal math equations! As someone who isn't a fan of math (and failed it terribly in school), I was pleasantly surprised that the book was still entertaining enough to hold my attention.

A Minor Note:

Some of the random French phrases felt a little clunky or unnecessary. There were a few times I used the Kindle translate tool and couldn't quite get a clear translation, which pulled me out of the story briefly.

Final Verdict:
A light, fun, and slightly spicy romantic suspense. Perfect for readers who love a protective hero, a brilliant lead heroine, and a touch of mystery!

⭐⭐ 3/5 stars ⭐⭐

Right, so this one took its time getting going, and not in a good way. The pacing felt all over the shop for a good chunk of the book, with about six different characters all vying for main character energy at once (pick one, please, I beg). But once things settled and the chaos calmed down, the drama properly kicked in, and my word, was there drama. Plenty of suspense, that lovely undercurrent of danger simmering away in the background... when it landed, it landed.

Where it didn't quite land for me was the characters. Tasha... bless her, but she's far too naive and trusting for someone caught up in all this, and Hale swings between condescending and (I don't want to say controlling, but) dismissive of literally anyone else's ideas. Not exactly giving me swoon.

And can we talk about the accidental pregnancy? Because I don't want to. I really don't think it was necessary, and if anything it just leaned further into the "Tasha is naive, Hale is cocky" dynamic that was already wearing thin.

The whodunnit element did keep me guessing, credit where it's due, although I'm naturally the sort of person who suspects everyone of everything at all times, so my initial hunch turned out to be right. Slightly annoying when your paranoia is vindicated, but there we are.

I think I'll look into the next book eventually... but I might wait for a few more reviews to trickle in first.

I had so much fun reading A Not So Simple Equation by Gigi Hodge! This romantic suspense set in Louisiana delivers a fast, entertaining mix of family chaos, swoony tension, danger, and hilarious banter. With friends-to-lovers chemistry, a secret pregnancy, a stalker plot, and an amazing cast of characters, it was easy to get pulled into Tasha and Hale’s story. If you enjoy romantic suspense with found-family energy, laugh-out-loud group chats, protective hero moments, and enough mystery to keep you guessing, this is a great pick. The group chats with Tasha and her sisters were hysterical, but you could still feel how much they loved each other. It was a fast read, easy to follow, with a little spice, a little romance, and a mystery that kept me invested until my aha moment at the end. I know this is a series about the LeBlanc Sisters, but I do hope that we get some books on the side characters because they were the best! There was such a comedy of errors that led to Tasha being protected by Hale and the other events that finally led to them being together. Hale and Tasha are family friends and have clearly had a thing for each other despite him dating mean, blonde, model-types. Hale moves Tasha in with him to protect her after her doctoral thesis becomes the kind of lucrative work that companies and government contractors would want. One professor has already stolen her work, and he is not the only one who wants more. I absolutely recommend this book. I can’t wait for the next LeBlanc sister book.

I was intrigued by the premise, and there were definitely some funny moments that kept me reading. Unfortunately, the story never fully came together for me.

My biggest issue was that many of the characters' decisions felt unrealistic. The romance developed in ways that didn't feel natural, and several relationships and interactions left me questioning the characters' motivations. I also found myself frustrated by how trusting the characters were of people they barely knew.

The mystery aspect was another disappointment. It was extremely predictable, and I had a strong suspicion about the outcome very early on. Instead of feeling invested in uncovering the truth alongside the characters, I spent much of the book waiting for them to catch up.

I also struggled with the writing at times. There were quite a few higher-level vocabulary words and untranslated French phrases that pulled me out of the story. Once the setting became more apparent, the French made a little more sense, but I still would have appreciated more context.

There were also a few details that felt inconsistent, making it harder for me to stay immersed in the story.

Overall, this wasn't a terrible read, and I did enjoy some of the humor. However, the predictable mystery, unbelievable character choices, and inconsistencies made it difficult for me to fully enjoy the experience.

If you are looking for a quick, fun read with elements of suspense, plus some ste@my scenes, this is the novella for you.

When graduate student Tasha finds herself the t@rg3t after her college professor passes, she isn't sure why or who. What she does know is that she needs to finish her dissertation or her degree won't happen. Unfortunately, the professor she gets assigned to is h@ndsy and cr33py....and stole one of her ideas (which she can't really prove)

At one of the many parties she and her friends go to, she encounters the former object of her childhood love, Hale, whom she had tutored in high school. He wants to rekindle their friendship, much to the chagrin of his shallow girlfriend....

Hale is an ER doctor and when he finds Tasha in his hospital after the first incident, he takes it upon himself to appoint himself protector, which is something both his mother and Tasha's mother (besties) approve.

Set in Louisiana, the descriptions of the location made this a memorable book. I adore NOLA and this was set around Mardi Gras, so a lot was going on in the story. It had a fun vibe to it and the friends are so funny. I hope that they are featured in future books!

This book knows how to lock you in early on in the story. And how to keep you invested until the end. It gives you intrigue and mystery and danger and heat and tension and so much more. There’s a great balance between suspense and spice, assault and angst. I really appreciated and loved the creole culture representation. So much fun. Hale and Tasha were so good together, once they got out of their own ways that is. Hale is so protective of her and supportive and caring. He is always willing to step in and help, and to take care of her, whenever and however she needs. And Tasha makes him come out of his curated shell. I was on the edge of my seat the whole book, working the mystery right alongside the characters. And when everything finally was revealed I was like I knew it! But not in a bad way. I really enjoyed the mystery side of this book. But it was the intense chemistry and genuine connection between Hale and Tasha that truly had me locked in to the story. These two were end game before they were ever playing the same sport. And that ending felt like the best possible way things could have gone for them.

I have never read anything by Gigi Hodge before, OMG this was fantastic!! This is book one in The Back to the Bayou: The LeBlanc Sisters series. Tasha LeBlanc is nerdy, and a brainiac. She thinks romance is outside her skill set. She is a math student working on her dissertation; under her Professor, Dr. Thibodeaux. The male main character is Dr. Hale Domingue, in which Tasha had been his math tutor; and is a family friend. Her Professor, Dr. Thibodeaux, dies or is murdered? Tasha is then paired up with "Dr. Creepy." He is always lucking, watching, and trying to get her alone; which doesn't happen. Tasha feels like she is being watched or followed, is she? Hale has Tasha move in with him, to try to keep her safe. Their is a lot of sexual tension between them, do they give in to their desires? So who is trying to hurt or kill Tasha to steal her dissertation project? Love the plot, great setting, and strong intense interesting characters. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Gigi Hodge!!!

This was a quick and enjoyable childhood friends-to-lovers romance with a touch of suspense. I really liked the chemistry between Tasha and Hale, although Hale's inability to recognize his feelings did test my patience at times!

The romance was sweet, the banter was fun, and the mystery kept the story moving. I enjoyed trying to figure out who was behind the threats against Tasha, and the suspense added a nice layer to the plot.

The pacing is fast and a lot happens in a short amount of time. While some moments felt a little over the top, I still found the story entertaining and easy to read. The side characters were a great addition, and the spice was present without overshadowing the romance.

Overall, a fun romantic suspense with childhood friends-to-lovers vibes, good chemistry, and enough mystery to keep me turning the pages. 📖✨

A Not So Simple Equation by Gigi Hodge was such an amazing read! I was hooked from the very beginning, and the story kept me completely invested until the very last page. The perfect mix of romance, emotion, and suspense made it incredibly difficult to put down. I constantly wanted to know what would happen next, which turned "just one more chapter" into several more.
The characters were easy to connect with, and I loved watching their journey unfold. Gigi Hodge has a writing style that is so smooth and engaging that the pages practically fly by. The tension throughout the story kept me on the edge of my seat without ever taking away from the emotional moments.
This is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a romance that keeps you guessing while making you care deeply about the characters. It was such a fun and captivating read, and I already can't wait to pick up another book by Gigi Hodge!

Back to the Bayou: Hale and Tasha

Childhood friends, and it’s obvious that there’s attraction, but he keeps dating the glamorous, snarky bimbo’s… You know, the ones that he feels he should be dating because they look good.

She’s being continuously attacked, and ends up staying with Hale…. who is very frustratingly obtuse… or wilfully blind, before finally getting his act together.

It actually moves quite fast, it’s not completely closed door, but it’s most of the way shut. Mentions of ‘sessions’, but nothing overly descriptive. And despite the MFC’s feelings about it, it’s pretty vanilla.
Add in a mystery that runs pretty much the whole book, and a few twists along the way to kee you guessing… I actually guessed the villain fairly early, but it’s impossible to confirm until the actual reveal.

Fast paced, and very enjoyable.

Tasha’s story had me hooked right away, wanting to find out who was hurting her had me all in. Hale isn’t my favorite MMC but he was protective and cared a lot for Tasha. He was a good character but could be condescending at times. Watching them go from friends to lovers was so sweet.

The story felt chaotic and all over the place at times though it had a great plot - the execution could’ve been placed better.

I’m a total sucker for the accidental pregnancy trope so having that is a win for me. If you need a fast paced friends to lovers with some suspense, definitely add this to your TBR.

4.25/5...I really enjoyed this one! Tasha and Hale had great chemistry, and I loved watching Hale slowly realize there was so much more to the quiet, nerdy girl he barely noticed in high school. Their relationship developed naturally, and the mix of romance, suspense, family dynamics, and Louisiana atmosphere kept me invested. My only real critique is the pacing. Parts of the plot felt a little rushed, while the climax seemed stretched out longer than necessary. It made the ending lose a bit of the momentum that had been building throughout the story. this was an engaging romantic suspense with likable characters, plenty of tension, and a satisfying romance. I'd definitely continue with the series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I thought this was a good book. The story centers around Tasha LeBlanc and is set in a small-town Louisiana bayou community. It is a friends-to-lovers romance that brings her back in touch with her past high school crush.

I liked that the main characters felt realistic, and the dynamic between them kept me interested the whole time. The story does a nice job mixing sweeter, lighthearted moments with a solid amount of romance and drama. The bayou setting adds a great atmosphere to the plot, and the background elements made the town feel very welcoming. It has a few slower parts in the middle, but the pacing picks up and the connection between the characters builds nicely by the end. It is a very sweet and entertaining small-town romance, and I recommend giving it a look.

A Not So Simple Equation blends romance and suspense with a fun STEM (math) twist. It’s always refreshing to see STEM woven into a romance, and it gave the story a unique touch.

I figured out who the villain was fairly early on, but that didn’t take away from the overall experience. The mystery was still engaging enough to keep me turning the pages to see how everything would unfold.

Hale and Tasha’s romance was sweet, and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop alongside the suspense. Overall, this was an entertaining romantic suspense with likable characters, a solid mystery, and great STEM representation.

I received this book as an ARC, and I'm leaving an honest review voluntarily.

I enjoy a shorter romance read after every few longer books. Shorter stories are not new to me. I'm familiar with their limitations due to page count.

That said, this story was not enough to keep me going. It felt immature. If a friend was dating someone that said something inappropriate and mean to my friend, I would NOT overlook it and laugh it off. Hale's character was annoying, and he should be more mature if he is a doctor. Ugh! I couldn't finish this story. I got 31% through before I gave up.

Tasha is working on her PhD and is almost finished when her mentor passes away, and well, she's stuck with what they call the creepy professor. When she runs into an old friend, things start to take a turn for her. Tragedy happens, and when she ends up in the ER where Hale is working, well, he's about to become her shadow. Hale never thought he would see Tasha again, but now that she's in his life, he's not about to let her go. Someone is after her, and they have no idea who, but trying to figure it out has them all on pins and needles. The shocking part was who was after her and why. This book was very interesting and had parts that made you go, "What in the world?" But loved reading it.

A quick story where a lot happens, rather quickly. The MCs are childhood friends, with parents who are close, the MMC has always seen the FMC as a friend, until suddenly she's all he can think about. It quickly escalates from there. There are some open door scenes, but they're not overly descriptive. In the suspense part of the story there are multiple suspects, and multiple occurences of danger. While enjoyable, parts seem OTT.

The way that I wanted to love this book is what kept me going! The concept of someone potentially coming after Tasha for her program/dissertation was next level, plus the lengths that they were going through to get it! 🤯

Hale in the beginning was condescending and rude basically telling Tasha she has no say in how a relationship should be because she is still a virgin, was infuriating.

Overall the story felt like there were too many characters (for such a short book), the story itself felt disjointed.

The Accidental Pregnancy was epic, I wasn’t expecting it (neither was she 😂) but it also helped to humble and force Hale to actually show Tasha how much he loved her instead of continuing to be a robot that criticized her and her lack of a love life. Hales reaction and the way that he shifted and grew as a character was monumental and just what the Doctor (😉) ordered.

This was a funny read. Some of the scenes and quotes had me laughing out loud! It had very steamy moments and an unexpected kink twist that was done nicely.

FMC was very naive but had a cuteness to her that gave her character range.

MMC was very shallow in the beginning and his quick turn around was a bit unbelievable. His protectiveness and overall being a friend helped a lot in giving his character arc.

I liked the thriller trope to it as it really made this a book i couldn't put down to see "who done it".

This is book one of Back to the Bayou series. Tasha had a crush on Hale, but knew that was never going to work out. Except when Hale sees her in the emergency room bruised, he wants to know what’s happening. He becomes invested in her life and is trying to help her figure out what’s happening. This book has suspense, mystery, love, and a journey to finding each other. This book has well written characters that are easy to connect with and a storyline that keeps you engaged. This was a really good read.

What an amazing adventurous romance!

For Tasha, she just wanted to get through her dissertation. For Hale, he just needs to get through the day as an ER doctor. One thing leads to another and they reconnect. Tasha and Hale grew up together and their moms have always wanted them together. Tasha’s professor in charge of her dissertation passed away, and the one who is assigned to her is a real creeper. Between her and Hale, a lot of crazy things happen, but be prepared for a HEA!! I can’t wait for the next story about the next LeBlanc sister!

So this is my first time reading a book by Gigi Hodge and I received this book as an ARC.
Can I just say how much I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I loved the characters, the intrigue and just the right amount of spice.
The main characters try to ignore how they feel but finally give in and fall. The abundance of side characters take nothing away from the storyline they actually add some fun interactions.
Definitely worth reading.

A Not So Simple Equation is book one of the Back To The Bayou: The LeBlanc Sisters Series.

Hale and Tasha were cute together. This was a quicker read, so at times the story felt a little rushed. However, once these two finally got together we got to see Hale becomes less of an arrogant individual. He was kind of a know-it-all about relationships, but once Tasha's secret is revealed he becomes a bit better and we see a softer side to him.

Tasha & Hale

Honestly, I rounded up to 4. It was a quick and easy read but I wanted more information about the side characters. I find that the support characters really add to the story. I loved how easy the friendship between Tasha and Hale was and how they reconnected. There was nice blend of light spice, suspense (of who is going after Tasha) and the romance is cute.
