Peter Darcy thought he left "Elizabeth" behind in Halifax. After three unforgettable nights together—first names only, no promises, no future—he returned to Toronto and threw himself back into the life that was slowly crushing him. But when a panic attack lands him on medical leave, he retreats to his cottage in Balsam Bay to figure out who he is beyond the eighty-hour work weeks and impossible expectations.
Billie doesn't do second chances. As the owner of Balsam Bay's premier construction company, she's spent years proving herself in a male-dominated industry and rebuilding what her father nearly destroyed. She learned long ago that love doesn't last—not in her family, anyway—and she's built a good life on her own terms. She doesn't need complications, especially not from the client whose house she just finished renovating.
Except when she shows up to his housewarming party covered in mud, she realizes her client "Darcy" is actually Peter. And he's not letting her walk away again.
Forced to work together on a town development project, Darcy and Billie can't ignore the chemistry that drew them together in the first place. But Darcy's fighting demons he's kept hidden from everyone, and Billie's guarding a heart that's been taught not to trust in forever. When family betrayal threatens everything they're building—together and apart—they'll both have to decide what they're willing to fight for.
Can two people who've spent their lives running finally find the courage to stay?

Cristina Santos is a mom of two little boys who hopefully will never read her books. She is married to the man of her dreams and lives lakeside with all her wild boys (pup included) in Nova Scotia, Canada. She loves a good sunset and will forever and ever and ever believe in the power of playlists, 90’s romantic comedies and love stories.
First of all, a huge thank you to Cristina Santos for the ARC copy! When I first read the synopsis of this book, I immediately reached out because something about these characters and this story already felt deeply personal to me. Cristina was so kind in response, and after finishing this book, I can honestly say it completely lived up to everything I hoped it would be.
From the very beginning, this book gave me strong Carley Fortune vibes—but with even more spice and emotional depth. It has that same nostalgic, coastal romance atmosphere that makes you want to pack up your life and move somewhere you can finally breathe again.
And honestly? Peter’s storyline hit me like a truck.
He’s successful, smart, on partner track at a demanding finance job in Toronto, making great money… and absolutely burning out under the pressure of it all. The anxiety, the exhaustion, the feeling of being trapped in a life that looks good on paper but no longer feels sustainable—it felt painfully relatable to me.
“Gordon, my no-nonsense therapist, tells me this is par for the course…”
Peter’s struggle with figuring out whether he’s ready to walk away from the career that has defined him or whether he simply needs healthier boundaries felt so raw and realistic. I really connected with that feeling of wanting a completely different quality of life, even when everyone around you would probably think you’re crazy for leaving something “successful.”
And then there’s Billie. I absolutely loved her.
Billie isn’t struggling to prove herself—she already is a badass. She took over her father’s construction company in Nova Scotia and built an incredible crew that’s thriving while helping rebuild their town.
“My crew is made up of women who could bench press most of the men in this town.”
I loved the way this book portrayed capable, hardworking women in trades and construction. As someone who grew up taking welding and shop classes and still sometimes wonders if I should have pursued engineering or the trades instead of spending my life in customer-facing management roles, I found this aspect of the story incredibly inspiring.
And what I loved most was how Peter and Billie complemented each other. Darcy and Billie? Peter and Beth? (I actually love how the two call each other by their first names, instead of their given nicknames…. It shows intimacy.)
Peter brings the finance brain, strategy, projections, and structure. Billie brings the practical expertise, leadership, and physical know-how. Together, they become unstoppable—not because one saves the other, but because they genuinely make each other stronger.
That dynamic felt so refreshing and mature.
And emotionally? This book got me.
The beginning especially brought me right back to what it feels like to meet someone and have your entire brain chemistry altered in a matter of days.
“A weekend that altered Billie’s brain chemistry.”
Yeah. I FELT that.
“I had my treat, and I need to move on. Except now I can’t stop thinking about him.”
That ache of returning home after experiencing something—or someone—that changes you forever was written so beautifully.
I also loved the surfing aspects of the story. As someone who recently discovered how healing it can feel to physically exhaust yourself in the ocean and finally get out of your own head for a while, those scenes felt vivid, grounding, and incredibly real to me.
Overall, this was emotional, romantic, nostalgic, sexy, inspiring, and impossible to put down. I absolutely devoured it and loved it!!
First, I want to note that out of all the books I have read, Peter Darcy is my dream man in every way. He is kind, selfless, patient, and it is obvious he cares deeply about his people. He is the best book boyfriend, and I feel like Billie is my friend whom I am just so happy for (and slightly jealous of).
Second, I resonated with Billie in many ways; mostly in her relationship history, leading to a distrust of anyone new. Darcy was careful to rebuild that trust he didn’t break. A side note, the author did a wonderful job writing about the daily struggles Billie faces with her ADHD and PMDD. I really hope someone can come across this series and feel the recognition and validation through Billie's thoughts and feelings.
Okay, carrying on. I loved the meet-cute right at the start of the book. It was funny, and I love a confident man. Darcy is charismatic, intuitive, and so respectful of Billie and the boundaries she had set (no personal info, one weekend only, never seeing each other again). I loved reading about their whirlwind weekend in Halifax, a city I love very much.
Obviously, I knew going into the book they would cross paths again, but I was on the edge of my seat waiting. I love a second-chance trope. I loved the resistance from Billie to restarting an intimate relationship with Darcy. He was so patient with her throughout the entire book, not pushing a relationship, waiting until she was ready but still being accepting if she never got there and then working to understand who she was as a person.
I also loved how well the author painted every scene in this book. I could almost feel the breeze and the sand, smell the south shore, hear the seagulls and see a quiet little town that feels so much classic-Nova Scotia. I would honestly rate her writing 5/5 on that. She did SUCH a great job.
In regard to spice, I am someone who likes the spice to be around 2/5, so I did find myself skimming some of the spicy scenes, but that's just the mood I was in when I was reading.
Lastly, of course, they were going to have a “breakup”. I was bracing myself for that. I was actually quite worried Darcy was going to go back to Toronto, and they would do long-distance. I was very, very relieved for him to make the decision to move to the East Coast. On top of that, he made sure to reassure Billie multiple times that he was coming back to her after finishing things up in Toronto. I was so happy when she showed up at his condo, and I teared up at him telling her, “Look behind me, I told you I was coming back”. AHHH swoon.
I just saw there will be a third book in this series and I am so happy about that. Balsam Bay has definitely made it to my top 5, I can’t wait to recommend to my friends!

"It should be me making you laugh. Me knowing how you take your coffee, and not thanks to the barista who knows everyone's orders. Me meeting you after work and hearing about your day. It should be me, and we both know it, but you're too scared."
If you're someone like me that loves summer romance, mental health representation and where he falls first and hard, then this book is for you!!
Elizabeth known as Beth to Darcy is an accomplished woman in her 30s that is the head of her own construction company. She's so well written that I was able to understand her feeling and thoughts throughout the book. She has PMDD and ADHD, and these two together make life hard for her especially with PMDD that makes everything feel impossible 2 weeks a month. I felt so sad for how people in her life dismissed her diagnosis for both conditions for a long time which made her be wary from relationships with anyone who isn't really close to her such as her bestfriend and co-workers. Darcy slash Peter is genuinely her other half and soulmate. The one person that was made for her 🥹
I loved every second of this book from the start especially seeing Darcy fall so fast and hard for this girl that he met in a bar and couldn't believe his luck on that night. He's one of my favorite MMCs because OMG THAT MAN WAS SO GONE FOR BETH LIKE WHAT. The representation of anxiety in his life because of his work was so well done that I was like I never related to a book character with anxiety and he's the first one that felt like it was so well written. He had such a hard time deciding what was better for him and if his life in Bsalm Bay was a new beginning. But again, if there was one thing he was sure of, it was his LOVE for Beth and his certainty that he would make her his wife one day 🤭🩷
I wanted to give this indie title my full attention and I’m so glad I did. Down Home is a refreshing departure from "fake and syrupy" romances; instead, Cristina Santos delivers a story that feels entirely genuine, with the baggage we all carry, out in plain sight.
The characters are relatable and their struggles feel earned. This is a swoon-worthy tale in every sense. Peter Darcy is a soft-hearted, gentle man who falls head-over-heels for Elizabeth Cameron in all the best ways. Beth, who struggles with the idea of letting herself be cared for, doesn’t stand a chance against his devotion.
What truly made this book outstanding was the mental health representation. Seeing Peter navigate his anxiety while supporting Beth through her ADHD and PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) was incredibly moving. They even casually passed meds across the counter to each other in one scene, a true partnership and a huge level of understanding for them both. I also appreciated the way Peter prioritizes consent and always puts "Billie" first.
Cristina has thoughtfully included trigger warnings and noted where the "open door" scenes occur. While the spicy moments were fine, I found the language used didn't quite match the level of care and respect shown elsewhere in their relationship but that might just be my "old crone" perspective! Down Home is a fabulous, heartfelt look at real connections and the messy, beautiful reality of finding your person. It’s a great pick for readers who appreciate emotional honesty over "cookie-cutter" plots.
Bonus: Check out Cristina’s Spotify playlist made specifically for Darcy + Billie!
Thank you Cristina Santos for trusting me with this Advanced Reader Copy of Down Home. As always, these thoughts and 'old crone' ramblings are entirely my own.
It was an honour to be chosen as an arc reader for this book! I was drawn to the story and the characters initially because of the Nova Scotia setting and I ended up falling in love with every aspect of the book along the way.
Darcy, Billie and all supporting characters were beautifully written. I love when the MMC falls first and hard!
Romance novels these days are so much more than two people falling in love with stars in their eyes and perfect lives. We are reading about characters who are struggling with real issues, mental health struggles, therapy as a positive support system, and in this book specifically PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) representation which I think is so incredibly important. Not only are we seeing characters working through these issues together positively, it’s allowing readers who may also be going through these same situations feel seen and know that they aren’t alone. That is everything.
The author successfully wrote a beautiful summer romance about two people falling in love and how they worked their way through everyday situations and showed up for one another with love and compassion. One of my favourite lines was ‘You saw me and didn’t run.’
I also love a story with a bit of humour and Tammy the pig sure did add that splash of humour!
Since I finished Down Home I have read a book and just started another one and Billie and Darcy are still living rent free in my head. Their story is still in the forefront of my mind. As I'm sure you can tell I absolutely loved this book.
What initially drew me to this series is that it is based in Nova Scotia. After the first book I was completely sold and was so happy to have the opportunity to ARC read this one. I loved the connection I have to the places in the book. It's not often that I get to read books based in this province, so it really did add an extra special element.
Peter aka Darcy and Elizabeth aka Billie aka Beth are two characters you cannot help but fall in love with. Billie is a boss woman, running her own construction business while butting heads with her father and dealing with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and ADHD. She feels that she must always prove herself but feels that she falls short. Darcy while trying to sort out some changes with his own mental health truly sees Billie, sees the strong working woman, try to do everything for everyone but sometimes at the detriment to herself and together they help get each other through it all
I fell so hard for these two and now I'll have to try to wait patiently for the next installment in the Balsam Bay series.
**Thanks to the author for the eARC copy. Voluntarily reviewed.**
Elizabeth worms her way into a date with a man named Peter. Like it seems like a normal date until things get heated. A man with piercings in a certain spot on his body - nope no thanks. But besides that, Elizabeth is giving off red flag energy. She is definitley a needy and straight to the point type of girl and he is a closed off, keep to himself type of guy. So it was interesting to see how their stories came together throughout the story. The truth becomes clear when a worksite meeting for an construction project she was assigned comes apparent that the reconnection happens because Darcy is standing right there waiting for her. Finding out that both their best friends are dating but also madly in love - Imfao. Then to top it off having her dad around at the worksite, definitely has Darcy (Peter) walking on egg shells with Billie (Elizabeth) being a ball of nerves. Hoping their past doesn't come up while the parental is around because sleeping with a client is apparently a taboo. Finally, I think her dad was up to something the whole time because of him, the friendship between Darcy and Billie flourished into something with understanding and respect on how their relationship and love explains who they are as characters.
Being from Nova Scotia, I really wanted to read this book, and was ecstatic when I got an ARC copy from Pen Pinery.
I instantly fell in love with the two main characters, spending my time totally relating to Billie and wanting to be her. The author, Cristina Santos, did a great job in making the reader feel the emotions of the characters right from the beginning, if Billie cringed, so did I.
I felt multiple emotions as I read through the book and I was just so happy to be rooting for non-perfect people. By writing the characters as she did, Santos made it that much easier to relate to both Billie and Darcy.
It was neat to see some things in the book that are strictly Nova Scotian, and I even learned a couple of things as well. Sometimes we forget that sayings and such are regional and I think everyone knows them.
Even though this was Book 2 in the Balsam Bay series, I didn't feel lost. Saying that, I plan to go purchase Book 1 and pre-order this book, as I enjoyed the world so much. I would also like to go and read Santos' other books as well, as I believe I have found a new favourite author.
I will start out by saying that I was given an ARC copy to read and am giving my own opinion. This is such a fantastic and sweet book about finding home and I loved every minute that I was reading it. The story is sweet enough to give you diabetes and the tension between the characters is thick enough that you can cut it with a knife. The relationship between Billie and Darcy is phenomenal and it’s one of my favorite parts of the story. Cristina (the author) does a brilliant job of allowing the characters to not only work out whatever differences they have, but also fleshes out their relationship enough to make it feel real. You would expect that, with the MCs named Elizabeth and Darcy, that the story would be a Pride and Prejudice spin off, but I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that it wasn’t! The story focuses more on the meaning of home than judging each other from where you’re from, and I think I prefer that. I absolutely enjoyed reading this story and would definitely recommend it! Thank you so much to Cristina Santos and her team for letting me read the book! I really enjoyed it and appreciate the opportunity!
Down Home by Cristina Santos first captured by attention originally due to the PMDD representation tag. As a fellow PMDD girly myself, I had yet to hear of a book which incorporated this diagnosis and was intrigued how it would be portrayed throughout the story. Regardless of that inclusion, I also thought the story of Elizabeth “Billie” and Peter “Darcy” sounded like such a cute small town summer read. Also, Elizabeth and Darcy… Pride and Prejudice?! SIGN ME UP! This read was such a sweet, tender, vulnerable, and enjoyable story. The vulnerability of both Billie and Darcy between their different diagnoses really set the tone for a loving, understanding, and sweet romance between the two of them. I gave this read 4 stars, and really enjoyed it, yet had a few notes. I felt the beginning was a bit to “insta-lovey” for me, yet understand why it was written that way because it led to further development later in the story- so overall, it worked. I also think the inclusion of the diagnoses such as ADHD and PMDD felt a bit forced or placed a bit . Regardless of all of that, I do think the diagnoses in general were described BEAUTIFULLY as being “betrayed by your own body.” The phrasing of this description, especially as someone who suffers from PMDD, is a perfect way to key others into the explanation of this condition. Cristina Santos BEAUTIFULLY showed the struggles of different conditions in this story along with the physical AND mental AND emotional turmoil they can cause for an individual, or their relationship with others. This story was beautiful and fun and enjoyable overall and I feel so grateful to have been an arc reader!
This was such an emotional and beautifully written read. I loved how realistic the characters felt and how relatable their struggles were. The mental health representation was handled with so much care and honesty, which made the story feel even more impactful.
One of my favorite things about this book was the setting in Nova Scotia - as someone who lives here, it made the story feel even more special and close to home. I felt so many emotions while reading this book, and yes, it even made me cry at one point.
This is the second book in the series, and somehow it was even better than the first. The characters are far from perfect, but that’s what made them feel real. They struggle, make mistakes, and work through things together. I really appreciated that the story showed that relationships and healing are not always sunshine and rainbows, even in fiction.
Also, this was my very first ARC review, so I want to say a huge thank you to Cristina Santos for the opportunity to read this book early. I’m so grateful to have experienced this story, and I cannot wait to read more from this series in the future!
Thank you to the author for the advanced reader's copy!
Down Home is the perfect summer romance with the most perfectly relatable characters and the cutest small town vibes. The setting was so beautifully depicted that it felt as much a character as the couple themselves. I am such a sucker for books set in Nova Scotia and I will never not get a giddy thrill anytime I recognize a place name. The love story was sweet and felt really genuine. Both characters are far from perfect, but the way they showed up for each other and supported the other through hardships was so well-written. I love a romance novel that shows all the real trials a realistic partnership would endure, when everything isn't sunshine and rainbows. These felt like real people navigating real struggles and I adored that.
I didn't think you could top the first book in the series, but this one was even better in my opinion. Huge bonus points because of Tammy, my new favourite character. IYKYK
•he falls first •second-chance romance •forced proximity
Down Home completely swept me away. Cristina Santos delivers a rich, emotional story full of warmth, depth and characters who feel wonderfully real. The sense of place is so vivid you can practically breathe in it, and the relationships - tender, complicated, real - are written with such honesty that they stay with you.
The book is heartfelt and full of soul. From the moment Darcy (Peter) and Billie (Beth) met I was hooked. The chemistry between them you felt the comfortably and connection between them grow throughout the book. Sharing their diagnosis’s, understanding each other, seeing each other, anchoring each other. To see it and feel it brought this storyline to another level. They both found what they needed, in the most unexpected way. They found home in each other, family in their friendships around them. I didn’t want to leave Balsam Bay.
"And we're not exchanging phone numbers or last names or anything that might make it possible for us to find one another after this, because I am not interested in that. Clear?" Yeah, okay, pal.
Can we just 👏🏻 for spicy time protection and discussing getting tested reps. I’m seeing more of this lately and I appreciate it.
And then there’s the consent. Good lord, I love this book. I love these characters. They felt so real. Like my friends.
Also: The bi-rep is so perf.
The anxiety rep is also so, so great in the way it is written. I appreciated this more than I expected to. There’s representation and then there’s representation done well. This was done so beautifully. Five stars on that alone, ma’am.
(AND the brief conversation with *that* mom. 🥲 Oh, my heart. )
Normally my reviews are more…methodical. They’re laid out and organized with intent. This book deserves my scatter and it totally makes sense to do it this way. 😉
4⭐3🌶️ ARC Dual POV First Person 317pgs 🇨🇦 Author, setting, and characters Standalone #2 in Balsam Bay series Billie and Darcy (aka Elizabeth and Peter) Love their meet-cute. Darcy being a green flag right from the start 🥰 She licks the salt of the rim of his drink and gives it back! 😳 🤣 Billie is so relatable (ADHD), but feel so bad for her shitty parents. Loved both their inner voices and their banter together. Darcy has amazing parents, love how they treat everyone as family. They are just perfect for each other, no pity, no fixing, just there, supporting each other.
"It's an ADHD thing. My brain is constantly generating scenarios- worst-case, best-case, completely implausible middle-case. I overthink everything. Plan for disasters that never come. Catastrophize conversations I haven't had yet."
"I always have a face. It came with the rest of me."
I really enjoyed this second book in this series. I was excited to come across this author, who is writing about a (fictional) location that is based on an actual location not far from where I am - very realistically, I might add! The characters come across as real people with real issues and is written in a genuine way. Billie and Darcy meet and have what they both thought would be a one-time thing. Surprise, it's not! This was a heartfelt story with wonderful character development and plot, with spice included! Very satisfying story. If you love small town romance, you should read this series. It has it all - banter, a pig that torments the locals, chemistry between the main characters, and an interesting story line with complex characters that you want to root for. Looking forward to the next in the series!
This was my first time reading a book by Cristina Santos, and I was pleasantly surprised.
Down Home is a cozy small-town romance that follows Elisabeth ("Billie") and Peter Darcy. It’s a heartfelt, light, and funny story about two people rediscovering themselves through each other.
The characters felt raw and realistic. The portrayal of their illnesses and mental struggles was handled with care and respect, woven naturally into their lives as they navigate each challenge.
I really enjoyed Peter and Billie’s relationship. It had a natural progression without unnecessary drama or a third-act breakup. Billie did give off a bit of an “I’m not like the other girls” vibe imo, but Peter’s golden retriever personality more than made up for it.
Bonus points for Tammy.
Overall, a very solid read. I’ll definitely be checking out the author’s other works.
I want Nutella all the time too, why is that so much to ask for?
“Holy shit. Peter?” - this made me giggle.
The characters are so relatable. Their issues are real issues. Their self talk is hilarious. Their banter together? Witty. Billie’s internal struggle with everything? I get it. Depending on people, sucks. Needing people is the worst feeling. But once you find that one person you know will support you, love you and make you feel so safe? Amazing. You let your walls down. It is Groundhog Day after all, isn’t it?
I think my favourite character is Tammy lol because girl, same. Tim is the character I hated the most, for obvious reasons. This was a fun read and I’m glad I was an ARC for it. I devoured it in less than 24hrs!
I really enjoyed Down Home by Cristina. I am not normally a romance girly but this was the perfect amount of romance, tasteful spice (not a fan of all SMUT), but this is the right amount to leave you feeling hot and heavy but also rooting for Billie and Darcy. I really liked the elements of mental health (ADHD, PMDD and anxiety). It made the characters feel real and brought some awareness to these issues faced by many. I loved the setting—Nova Scotia vibes that allowed you to smell the water and crave to be in this cozy wooden cottage where I could smell the fresh cedar beams. I also love that Chapter 1 of the next book is included at the end! I feel like I need to go back and read the author’s first book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a thoughtful and special read. I loved the two main characters-perfectly imperfect. Being from Nova Scotia, I loved the cultural references and quirky details.
It’s the kind of story that makes you feel like this cast of characters are your friends. You want to hang out at the cottage and check-in on the new builds.
I did not get to read Balsam Bay #1 but will be adding it to my TBR. I’m really curious to learn about the other characters in a deeper way.
The spicy scenes were a bit well, spicy, so be prepared, if that’s not your vibe. It’s not really mine either but it’s all part of their story.
I absolutely loved this book! While it has romance, it also touches on real-life struggles people experience every day, including ADHD and anxiety. I really related to Billie and the way her mind works, which made the story feel even more personal and meaningful to me.
I especially loved that the story is set in Nova Scotia — the setting felt so vivid and immersive that I truly felt entangled in their lives right alongside them.
I already can’t wait to read more from Cristina Santo 📖
I'm not sure I've ever felt as seen as I did in this book through both Darcy and Billie. It's not a requirement for me to love a book. But it did catch me off guard by how it felt like Cristina Santos reached into my soul.
Billie is such a wonderful FMC and Darcy is so beautifully vulnerable. The two of them together are pure magic and perfectly human. Add in the summer South Shore vibes and cast of secondary characters and this is the perfect book to get lost in this summer!
I am so grateful to have received an ARC for this book! While I liked Neve’s story, Billie (or Beth’s) book resonated for me so much more. Everyone deserves someone to see the hard things about you, & love you despite it all. It was so beautiful that they were that for each other. 🖤
“I told him it bothered me, and he just— did something about it. No questions. No judgment. No, ‘have you tried getting used to it?’ He picked me up.”
Cristina does it again. This town could not be any cuter and I wish I could visit for real. I just loved every page and watching Darcy and Billie grow with one another while dealing with mental health issues, family drama, and a busy work life was what made the story so relatable. Their love story is so natural and their chemistry was fantastic. Love love love this book and I look forward to book 3.
Cristina does it again! I LOVE when mental health rep is done right! You feel a little seen while also seeing someone else’s story!
Absolutely obsessed with Down Home. It was a story I didn’t know I needed but something about it made me feel like I found another home. Love love love!!
This might be my favorite Cristina Santos book yet! I really enjoyed From Away (the 1st book in this serries) but this one (Down Home) really got me. I loved Billie's character, I related to her in many ways. Her and Peter's love story was perfect, not too spicy, not too overdone, just a natural loving relationship. I was so surprised at the beginning, I was expecting a slower burn. I loved it!
Absolutely adored this book. I had a vacation to the beach recently and it stormed the whole trip. I curled up in a window one day and read this book in one sitting! Thank you to Pen Pinery for this ARC!
This book was the most raw book I have ever read. Both of the main characters had many similarities going on with their mental health but also different things. Darcy had anxiety and Billie had ADHD and PMDD but they were both trying to work through their own things separately but then learned that it’s so much easier to work together on their issues. I was so hooked to this book. I feel like I was right there with them while reading this book. I honestly highly recommend this book, it has a great story line and it’s just so good you won’t want to stop reading it!!
Thank you again for letting me read the ARC version of this book! I really enjoyed it!!
