Small towns. Big country. Stubborn lawmen. The West may be modern, but its problems are as old as dirt roads and bad decisions.

After thirty-two years of service in the United States Army, I traded the discipline of military life for the craft of storytelling. I studied creative writing at Indiana University, where I began publishing poetry, short fiction, and novellas in literary journals and magazines.

Today I write full-time from Indiana, where my days revolve around strong coffee, enthusiastic dogs, and keeping up with eight energetic grandchildren. My stories are rooted in the landscapes, communities, and characters of rural America.

I am the author of the popular Frontier Series, including Frontier Justice, Frontier Outlaws, Frontier Marshal, Frontier Vengeance, and Frontier Bounty. Blending Western grit with modern crime and mystery, the series has earned strong reader ratings and a growing audience of fans who enjoy the work of Craig Johnson, C. J. Box, and other writers of rural suspense.

The sixth novel, Frontier Ghosts, will be released by the end of 2026, and Frontier Treasure is scheduled for 2027.

If you enjoy stories about determined lawmen, dangerous frontiers, and the fight for justice in the wide-open American West, start with Frontier Justice and join thousands of readers already riding along.

The best Frontier book yet!

Frontier Vengeance, book 4 in the Frontier series, reunites us with Danny Coogan and the rest of the crew of Darwin, Montana and the Dead Horse Reservation. This is by far the best Cogan book yet. I must say, Western crime thrillers are NOT my usual fare, I read mostly read sci-fi/horror/ apocalyptic survival thrillers, but the quality of the writing is so good that I can't resist the guilty pleasure that is the Frontier series! I was recommended this series by several people before giving in and starting the series, and couldn't be happier to have listened.

In Frontier Vengeance, the character development is excellent, particularly Danny starting to grow up now that he's a father, and Ruth, who despite being fearful about Danny's safety, but still letting him do what he needs to to satisfy his moral compass. Bringloe is coming into his own as well. The rest of the writing is simply excellent; great narrative quality, great dialogue, fast pacing and the best plot yet! I can't wait for the next book!

5/5 stars! Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys meticulously crafted thrillers, even if Western crime thrillers aren't your thing, you won't regret it, I certainly don't!

A homerun again!

Marshall Cogan is a terrific character. He's honest, caring, smart, tough as nails and aware of his own shortcomings. While he's that main character, others see plenty if action and are showcased enough so we get to know them also. The action is non-stop, both the physical and the mental as they figure it out. All in all it's a great book in a outstanding series. I hope they keep getting their stories for a long time and many, many books. Please write faster!

EXCELLENT READ!

I laughed; I cried; I did a bit of both at the same time. I even dreamed of the characters a few times. Mr. Cardwell is a fine writer and a great story tel!er. As a retired automotive magazine editor, I have pet peeves, though. Please drop the double spaces after a period. It's a typewriter carryover and annoying as hell. Also, a car's or truck's grille is spelled with an "e", while a BBQ grill does not. Really looking forward to number five!

Another good one. Great characters. Especially like the interaction between Indian and ‘white.’ The author is not afraid to use the term Indian, only occasionally Native American. Having very distant ties to the Mohawks, possibly the equivalent of one drop of blood, that is a bit of an issue for me, having grown up with the term Indian. Old fashioned. One thing stands out: the coffee drinking. So much! Another reviewer mentioned this in a review for another book of this series.

Great Series

A good story that is well written, moves right along. Keeps you involved and interested. Lots if quality

native American lore and history and some of the hopelessness on the Lakota Reservation. Well worth reading. Hoping for Moe Marshal Cogan stories in the future

Not sure why I'm still reading these action-packed stories. What to do after you've returned alive from fighting in Afghanastan? And somehow growing up in the 50s with all those cowboy and Indian TV shows and now it's politically correct to acknowledge the "Indians" got a total raw deal and continue to get one. Awkward scenarios and lots of dead bodies.

An enjoyable read

Lots of action. Not easy to figure out who the really bad guys are. All in all, was hard to put down. Every chapter revealed another twist in the story plot. I can’t wait for the next tangle Coogan gets involved in.

Another winner

Hard not to like Coogan and his never say die attitude. And the fact that he's a true warrior poet.
I really have enjoyed this series. Well written and highly recommended.
