Trouble at the Fulbright : An MM Paranormal Romance

Rate this book
Regge—Having been dropped into Philadelphia’s supernatural underbelly almost a year ago, I can handle monsters, magic, and even smartphones—mostly. What I can’t shake is the quiet pull I feel toward Bruce Hunter, the sharp-tongued bartender who once nursed me back to health. An explosion at a rundown hotel in Philly brings him to my door once again.
Only Hunter would give up his apartment for some homeless creatures. He’s my sharp, steady bartender with a future-sight trick that saves our skins more often than I care to admit. Yet, he can't seem to see just how messed up I am. He deserves a whole person--someone without my sordid past. But I'll do anything to keep him around. Even dealing with a spot of trouble at the Fulbright.

Hunter—When I end up without a place to sleep, I move in with Regge North, the blond Brit who’s invaded my every fantasy. It’s temporary, I tell myself. Except living with the man I’ve wanted for months turns me inside out. I can predict bar fights, bad decisions, and every spill on a sticky Friday night. I can’t predict a single thing about my own heart.
We stumble upon a kidnapping attempt of an ancient necromancer. Saving him and an innocent ghostly desk clerk drops us straight into the sights of a crime boss. Now, Regge and I are in the middle of trouble I should have seen coming. To survive, we have to trust each other more than ever—maybe enough to face the future I’ve never dared to look at.

This is a voluntary review s as I read this as an ARC FOR L. E. Towne.

This isn’t something I would normally read. But I love books with necromancy, and I love mafia as well. So I figured, what the heck. And I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. I loved both the main characters Regge and Hunter. The two of them Jude caught my heart. But what I really find fascinating about this book was the time travel. The mafia going after a necromancer, magic, and all kinds of fun elements. I thought it was pretty cool that Hunter could see a persons immediate future too. Cool addition. I found this book to be intense, with twists and turns. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen next, you’re wrong lol
But what truly won me over with this book was Hunter and Regge themselves. I loved the two of them for the relationship that they had. And I wanted them to have nothing but happiness.
On a side note, I thought the works that was created in this book was well written, and the character development was excellent.,

Strap in, because this is one wild, crazy adventure into the supernatural realm, which I love (because anything is possible!!). The wild things that go on with the mafia, magic, portals, ghosts, even romance and time travel. Hunter and Regge's story is touching, and I couldn't help but be drawn into it all, because LOVE!!!

The eclectic group of characters in this insane tale are engaging and kwirky. At times it was hard to keep up, but I tried to soak it all in and enjoy the entertainment, as I'm sure you will too. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest review.

Regge North found himself in another realm after surviving a brutal past. Severely hurt and to save his life Regge, Tam had formed a portal and her sister Isabelle had sent him through the portal. His mentors Isabelle and Theo, the Fae, had come for him. Regge was a thief or a murderer but he saw his lover, Charlie killed by Locke. In turn Regge had killed Locke. Isabelle then pushed him through the portal to go to Tam. He was not alone when traveling through the portal, his familiar, Archie was with him. When he made it through to this new world, he was almost dead, but those who found him called for Tam.

Now in the modern world of Philadelphia, he met Burce Hunter and the Others that lived in Philly. He got a job at Pinkies where he met: Abraham Puck the owner, Arial and Hunter. They also worked at the Hotel Fulbright. Bruce became Regge’s guide to all modern things right down to companionship. They were good companions and even roomed together. But months later Regge had moved out without explanation. He felt he had screwed things up with Hunter and there were hurt feelings.

Hunter works at Pinkies and for his friend and owner Abraham Puck. When the Gate Keeper sends an urgent message to Abraham he heads to the basement of Pinkies. He tells Hunter there’s something going on at the Fulbright and he needs to go now.
But not long after, Hunter has a premonition that something is wrong and he needs to go after Abraham. Hunter knows the urgency and calls on Arial to go to the Fulbright, Abraham is in trouble. They find themselves in a chaotic mess as someone had tried to blow-up the hotel.

As they try to figure out what”s happening, they find the mafia is involved. Julian Eskridge the lieutenant to Ramon Castenada and son to Jersey Head of Cartel, Cesar.
Eskridge doesn’t know what a strange situation he’s gotten himself into. How is the old man, Master Anu connected to all of this? Besides figuring out what’s going on, Hunter will have to stay with Regge, as the Hotel Fulbright residences of Others will have to find temporary accommodations. Will Regge and Hunter be able to work out their differences with all the chaos around them?

L.E. Towne creates a modern world with necromancy, sigils, magic and the Others, that are hardly known to exist with “Trouble At The Fulbright”. It’s a fast paced, unpredictable story, with danger, fun, and a group of entertaining characters.
Regge and Hunter are two fascinating characters and you cheer them on as they start to grow together. They go through their ups and downs, until they finally have a clear understanding of each other. The moments of intimacy are wonderfully written.

There’s an abundance of strange characters that make this story even more interesting: Theo the Fae, Isabelle; Abraham Puck and Arial; Nigel, Derek, Pery, Detectives: Tam and Damien Cobb, Barry, Jane “Ziggy” Ziegfield; Marjorie Hunter and the very special Archie.

I highly recommend “Trouble At The Fulbright, especially for those who like the world of necromancy, magic, strange types of shifters, realms, and the creation of portals. Reading many a story with these elements, I have to say L.E. Towne’s writing is outstanding! I’ll definitely keep a watch out for L.E. Towne to see what comes next for Regge North and Bruce Hunter.

It’s my first book by L.E. Towne and it’s a straight jump into a universe that’s new to me, like a spin-off series mid-stream lacking any context or knowledge of what came before. Nonetheless, the world itself is intriguing: paranormal activity centred on the Hotel Fulbright, a place of otherworldly oddities populated by mysterious characters who hail from anywhere and everywhere, each with their own magical abilities and inclinations.

But this is where I struggled: trying to catch with with a large cast, their personalities and powers, while trying to get a grasp on the sort of world that Towne has built across her previous books.

So despite an introductory chapter, ‘Trouble at the Fulbright’ doesn't quite work as a standalone. The story is a mish-mash of universes that suck you into a disorienting wonderland that's present-day Philly, where magic, time-travel and clairvoyance collide. At its core though, we follow Regge, a man displaced in our era and his one-time roommate Hunter (who catches brief flashes of the immediate future) trying to save an old Necromancer who has caught the attention of the Mafia.

As a result, weird things happen in this multifaceted world when magic collides with the non-magic and I found the entire reading experience…odd, for lack of a better word.

In fact, the stuttering, somewhat angsty relationship between Hunter and Regge was my anchor as they were the unchanging pillars of the story that made sense—unrequited feelings, repressed emotions, past trauma…all familiar tropes to as we dipped in and out of several POV changes that made the entire narrative fragmented and initially confusing. I’d hoped to read more about Regge’s background, or maybe expected some kind of dipping back and forth between timelines given the richness of ancient beings around, but these seemed to be relayed briefly and then left as it was, just to keep the story grounded in the present.

I’m glad for Regge/Hunter's HEA/HFN nonetheless, but it all ended with me asking too many questions and not finding sufficient answers.

Thank you to the author and to BookSirens for the ARC.

This book bills itself as a mystery/thriller with a side of romance, however it’s very much leaning towards being a romance with a pinch of a mystery, and that’s where my issue with the story is as the romance is built on petty jealousy and squabbles.

Regge is actively grieving at the start of the book, his lover was killed in front of him, and he’s recently in the modern day having to come to terms with an extreme amount of information and different attitudes. So why not take him to a gay club and get petty when he’s drawn away by a strange man after he’s been left alone? This is the foundation of the relationship and almost every argument that follows on from it.

While this book is the first in a series, it reads like a spin off of an already established series with a handful of characters referenced back to, or, if this isn’t the case, without being fully rooted in this story.

I’d had such high hopes from the premise as a man out of time becoming involved in a magical murder mystery could be so much fun, as well as Hunter’s talent of seeing a few seconds into the future. This wound up being under-utilised and only manifested to advance the plot on. I was hoping for more than I received from the mystery and could’ve done with a different set up to the romance.

Loved that i was thrown straight into a lively, magic-soaked version of Philadelphia, full of danger, odd creatures, and chaotic supernatural politics. Even with all the mayhem, it’s Regge and Hunter who truly hold the story together. Their dynamic—one part pining, one part exasperation, and entirely compelling—adds real warmth to all the action.

Regge’s mix of vulnerability and stubborn loyalty contrasts beautifully with Hunter’s sharp wit and uncanny future-sense, and watching them circle closer while navigating kidnappings, crime bosses, and general magical bedlam is genuinely fun. At times the wider world can feel a bit overwhelming if you’re not already familiar with the series, but the emotional thread between the leads keeps everything anchored.

A fast, imaginative read where the romance shines just as brightly as the supernatural chaos surrounding it.

Huge thank you to L.E. Towne for the chance to read it early!

This book is wild in the best way. It has magic, necromancy, mafia elements, portals, romance, and even time travel. It’s a lot, but it makes for an unpredictable and exciting ride. The characters are fun, engaging, and wonderfully quirky. While the world-building did lose me in a few places and the pacing dragged here and there, the story was still enjoyable overall.

The character development really stood out, though. Regge and Hunter completely stole my heart. Their dynamic was everything, and I loved watching them grow.

A chaotic, magical world with characters worth rooting for. I’m excited to see what comes next!

Trouble at the Fulbright is an imaginative, chaotic plunge into L.E. Towne’s paranormal universe—filled with magic, time tricks, oddities, and a sprawling cast of characters. As a newcomer to the series, I often felt lost; the worldbuilding assumes prior knowledge, and the shifting POVs can feel fragmented. What grounded the story for me was the emotionally charged dynamic between Regge and Hunter—their unresolved feelings and shared history provided heart amid the confusion. I enjoyed their HFN/HEA, but overall I was left with more questions than answers. Intriguing, but not the most beginner-friendly entry point into this universe.

I want to visit L.E. Towne's Fulbright Hotel the same way I long to get into Hogwarts. And I definitely want to be greeted by the enigmatic and ghostly night clerk. This novel is teeming with magical details and imagination. The plot never slows down--no sagging middle here. The plot offers a heady mix of lovers, mobsters, and monsters, as well as a dose of time travel.

I've long been a fan of L.E. Towne's worlds. In Trouble at the Fulbright, I revisited favorite characters and alternately laughed, gasped, and sighed. It's a great read.

I really enjoyed the story from beginning to end. The evolution of Hunter and Regge over the course was beautiful. I appreciated that the author had two strong male love interests and protagonists without one of them being the perpetual victim needed saving. It was very refreshing. If the author continues this universe I would be happy to continue the journey. I’d especially love to see a prequel to fill in some of Regge’s past and offer perspective. Also more Archie! I’d also love to see a continuation of Julian and Nigel.

Loved this! There were more times than I'd like to say where I was so frustrated at them for not just saying how they felt, but I digress as it came out when it needed to.
The others aspect was fun, and I'd like to read more about all the characters.

Did not finish. This one was a bit wordy and long for me. I felt a little bogged down with all the information.
