A Weave of Lies

Rate this book
A dark fantasy romance standalone that delivers a high-tension, enemies-to-lovers tale where one murder could cost a witch her heart—and her life.

Only a madman or a desperate fool would walk uninvited into a witch’s lair.
So which one is he?
The witch Semras sees her quiet life in the woods upended the day Inquisitor Estevan Velten walks into her home. He’s not here to burn her at the stake, like he did to many witches before her, but to consult her on a murder.
Semras’ expertise with poison is requisitioned to acquit the sole suspect—a member of her coven whose guilt he doubts … or so he claims.

She’d do anything to save a coven sister, even if it means allying with an enemy. That is, if the mercurial man doesn’t drive her insane first. He threatens yet defends her; he mocks yet praises her. His every word contradicts his actions, yet Semras can’t help being attracted to the resolute man beneath the lies.

But Estevan is as damnably seductive as he is dangerous. When she discovers he knows more than he lets on about the murder, the lies he weaves to protect his secrets may yet lead her to the pyre. Because someone killed a man and someone needs to pay for it.
What’s the difference between one witch or another in the eyes of the Inquisition?

A Weave of Lies is the first standalone novel set in The Woven Worlds series, a dark fantasy universe on the cusp of the early modern era. The magic of witches wanes with each new generation, the bones of ancient fey lords lie long forgotten amidst ruins, and even their age-old enemy, the Inquisition, struggles to maintain its place in a world ready to judge them all to be irrelevant—yet ancient conflicts and old grudges fester too deeply for them to accept facing the end gracefully.

E. M. Riedl—or Emri for short—is a Canadian geek who always wondered why authors needed biographies. When not plagued by the existential crisis of having to write about herself in the third person, she spends her leisure time playing role-playing games (of the video and tabletop variety) and reading about obscure history facts far too late into the night.
Ever since she started writing fantasy books at the inadvisable age of ten, Emri has been pursued by plot bunnies. She had successfully run away from them before completing anything—until now.
Her time of blissful, daydreaming procrastination ended with A Weave of Lies, her debut standalone novel. Emri is now planning many more fantasy romance books set in the Woven Worlds universe.

"𝘸𝘦'𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘺 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, 𝘸𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘸𝘦?"

"𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘵."

a witch and a witch hunter...Semras of Yore and Estevan Velten, the Inquistor.

from the first moment these two encounter each other, you can feel the hatred and tension. but instead of coming to take her to the pyre, Estevan has requested her aid in a case, which she takes, unknown why even to her besides wanting to help a sister in crisis.

from the beginning, you could openly see and feel the cruelty Semras was dealt with by men. and man, I won't lie, it pissed me off reading how cruel and rude they were just because they did not understand her and did not want to take the time or chance.

Semras though, regardless of how scared she felt a lot, was a badass and is probably one of my favorite fmc's I have read in a while.

Estevan, MAN. I loved him. I hated him. I wanted to rip his heart out. I loved him again, and then I wish he would have died. the way this book puts half the 'enemies to lovers' books I have read to shame honestly.

"𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘰 𝘧𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘴, 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘺 𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺 𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘮." 𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘦𝘥. "𝘐 𝘣𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘧 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘮𝘦, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘦."

their tension, banter, hatred, love... this is simply by far right now my top book of the year even though it is not published yet.. did I mention this is E.M. Riedl's first standalone debut novel?

"...𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴, 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘦, 𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦."
𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘵.
𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘰'𝘴 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘺𝘰𝘶? 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘭𝘺.

my heart went through a rollercoaster in this, from beginning to end. the plot twists keep you guessing, some you obviously get and others.. come as big surprises and I truly will not spoil that for anyone. all of it comes to together perfectly and just UGHHHHHH

if i could give this book, the amount of stars i want, the nighttime sky would be empty. the Night had come to claim them all (haha book reference).

special mentions:
Themas..or Alaran..I knew something was off from you and I cannot believe it took that long to figure your tricks.

Cael..I am glad to discover I was wrong to hate you.

Maz & Sin.. I wish we could have gotten way more of you both.

thank you to netgalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for a honest review.

wowwww the enemies to lovers was done so well. at first, i was even doubting he was the love interest with how much they seemed to hate each other. and the witch shackles moment?? 😭bro, i hated him for making her suffer so much ngl... i felt so bad for semras throughout the whole book, and at one point estevan gave major compulsive liar energy but… anyway. i also have to say that i’m absolutely obsessed with their “verbal sparring”, those scenes were so fun to read.

btw, huge thanks to netgalley for the arc 🤍

Thank you victory editing netgalley co-op for this AMAZING Earc 🤭.

"I am cruel, yes so are you," She said pushing her lips over his.
"We cannot change what we are so be greedy. Be cruel. Be mine." 🤧🙌🏾

THIS QUOTE WILL BE ON MIND 24/7.

For a DEBUT dark fantasy standalone book this was a 10/10 🙇🏾‍♀️. One for the books 🙇🏾‍♀️.

Our fmc Semras of yore is a wood witch and our MMC is Estevan Velten an inquisitor.

The inquisition is a group of men who basically hunted witches a long time ago and that made them enemy number one to witches.

Estevan wants Semras to help him with an investigation he's conducting but obviously she doesn't want to but once she finds out that a unsuspecting witch might be falsely blamed she agrees.

From the moment this two made eye contact 👏🏾🤭 You could cut the TENSION with a fucking knife 🙈🙆🏾‍♀️

His arrogant smirk and her hateful glares OMG I was just faning myself because of how hot it was😮‍💨.

It reached a point I just wanted to punch Estevan in his handsome I mean his ugly face and rip his heart out 😭 😤. This man legit PISSED ME OFF!! That's how I knew that the book would be good. 👏🏾

The plot goes Enemies to slightly friends BACK to enemies to frenemies then the last 5 chapters they confess their love to each other 🤣.

My girl Semras went through A LOT with this man. 😬 The hot and cold attitude Estevan was giving her that's why when she tried to choke him to death I was happy, because I'd have done the same.🤷🏾‍♀️🤣

She might have also poisoned him because he was keeping secrets from her 🤣🤣🙌🏾.

Semras is the perfect example of fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.💁🏾‍♀️ The way she'd just snap Estevan and remind him that she wasn't a doormat was honestly so HOT 🤭♥️.

The betrayal was so well written that I experienced the same emotions Semras did! 😭💔 The plot twist though 😲. I was like wow all this time.

I had a fun time reading this and I can't wait for more 🤭💁🏾‍♀️.

I liked this book A LOT and when this book drops I'll be on the look out for fanarts.🤭 Might even read the book again.🤷🏾‍♀️

This book will be released on October 23rd and you all BETTER READ IT😭 and support the author so that I can get more books like this one 😏.

My favourite quotes;

"Take my hand witch,". Estevan said.
"Or do not. I would rather you fell so I may catch you in my arms,"

🤭🙌🏾.

Before her bemused eyes Estevan fell to one knee. "I beg you," he said softly. "O Daughter of the Night, I beg you to heed my request . It is anathema to you, yet crucial to me. Know that I do not ask it lightly,"

😮‍💨🙈.

" You are infuriating ," Semras huffed as she worked on unbuttoning his shirt.
"You love me that way, don't you?"

THIS MAN😭♥️

" Have you any idea?" He drawled. " How dangerous you are to me? I am just a man Semras. Can't you tell how tempted I am?

😲🥴

I can't put any more quotes because it'll ruin the story 🤧. I might continue after the book release if I remember that is. 🤭♥️

When this book blows up remember me 😭.

I just read the first chapter in Estevan's pov😭🤭. The man was HUNGRY for Semras 🤣🙆🏾‍♀️.

4⭐️ I originally wanted to read this book because the cover was absolutely beautiful, but I stayed because the writing was magnificent. It’s been a long time since i’ve read good writing like that and I think I needed it💔
Estevan and Semras were utterly insane characters, they took me through a JOURNEY. The back and forth was chaotic and it drove me INSANE.
Do not mistake, this is way more romance heavy than fantasy, but I really did like the fantasy aspects. I feel as though the magic system was fleshed out enough and the world was fine, maybe a bit underdeveloped but I can forgive.
It was such a fun and enjoyable read! at first it was just very hard to get into so please hold out and give it a full chance, it is very good and the plot twists had me, I cannot lie.

lets get into this...

i absolutely loved reading this book from start to finish, there was not a single moment where i felt bored and unenthusiastic about getting to the next page and that excitement created alone makes this a 5 star read however it was not just this that made this book a memorable 2025 read for me.
The plot 10/10 genuinely had me on the edge of my seat while simultaneously screaming, crying and throwing up. The freaking angst made me experience like such a wide range of emotions in the span of 10 pages. THE ROMANCE WAS TOP TIER and im not even kidding both the fmc and mmc could keep up with the banter which made everything so much more entertaining i was giggling non stop icl. you guys know i absolutely despise a doormat female lead but when i tell you girly was so strong, funny and just overall so mesmerizing to read about i wish we could swap bodies for a little just so i could be as charismatic as she was. anyway let me not give you too much insider scoop. READ THIS BOOK AS SOON AS IT RELEASES. i promise its worth it!

Unfortunately, this was a DNF for me 😩 I was so looking forward to this. I read ~200 pages and I wasn’t really interested. I think my main issue was the writing and world building. The writing felt very hazy almost like I was reading through fogged glasses for me. The world building was a bit too vague and I kept having to double back to make sure I understood who these people were. I know some things may have been answered at the end of the book, but I’m not sure I’m invested enough to continue.

I also didn’t like that at 30% the characters had still only known each other for like 2 days and had already made out in the woods. The tension was there, but the pacing threw me off. It felt kinda insta-lust ish which is just not my thing. And the plot had also not moved ..because it’d only been 2 days 💔

Pros:
-Estevan was a charming MMC. I loved his personality and how he was a lowkey yapper. (I hate quiet men)
-Overall has really good potential, just needs a few tweaks.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC :)

I really loved the witch vs witch hunter trope of the crimson moth series, and this book delivered that to a whole new level! Where crimson moth was more new adult vibes, this book is a little darker, edgier and just delicious!

There is tension, longing, enemies to lovers, forbidden romance which will have you swooning, there is banter that will have you out right giggling.

I was a huge fan of the love interest and the characters, each for the own unique personalities.

I didn’t have any expectations going in to this book, but I absolutely loved it!!

Thank you for the gifted copy,

3.5/5 ⭐️

A Weave of Lies is a dark, twisty standalone that Witch x Witch Hunter trope lovers are going to EAT UP ✨🧙‍♀️🔥

What you’ll find inside:
⛓️‍💥 Forced proximity
❤️‍🔥 True enemies-to-lovers
✨ Delicious yearning
🔪 Forbidden romance

Our FMC is witty, sharp, and resilient—captured by a hot Inquisitor (aka Witch Hunter 😏) and tangled in a web of secrets, deception, and tension that had me glued to my Kindle!! The last 40%? PLOT TWIST CITY. I was gasping, flipping kindle pages, and fully hooked.

Where it fell short for me: the first half dragged a bit with over-explaining and the random love triangle felt pointless. If those had been tighter, this easily could’ve been a 5 read.

Still, a fabulous standalone for anyone who loves forbidden magic, banter that crackles ⚡️, and enemies who can’t stop falling for each other 🖤

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-ARC. This book releases later this month!

If you loved the serpent and dove series - this will be right up your alley. Witch and witch hunter (inquisitor in this story) romance. Enemies to lovers. More twists and turns than a Disney rollercoaster. And oh the unexpected plot twists kept me guessing the whole way through. Only downside for me is I found the book to be a bit long.

Semras is a wood witch and herbalist. She lives a peaceful solitary existence in her hut in the woods by herself. Until one day, Inquisitor Veltan barges in and volun-tells her she needs to come with him and his guards to consult on a crime - a poisoning. With no choice, Semras embarks on a quest with the Inquisitor and his knights to help solve the crime and hopefully protect other witches from the blame of the offence. But along the way, chemistry and tension flare with the one man she cannot want. On top of the prejudice and suspicion she faces as a witch from everyone else. Little does she know, she is stuck in a weave of lies much greater than she could have ever imagined. One that could start a war, that could end her life.

Solid 3.5 that I will round to 4 🌟🌟🌟🌟

"A delightful read and a remarkable author debut".
Thank you #NetGalley for the arc.

I like the originality of the story, even though we’re working with a classic witch–witch hunter dynamic and forced proximity, which normally risks a bit of déjà vu. Really well executed! The slow burn is written perfectly, and the shift from hate to love is communicated so beautifully. I genuinely loved how the story keeps toeing the line, tonally and emotionally, in a way that’s completely addictive (even with my conflicted feelings about the physical harm the MMC inflicts on the FMC).

We’re almost in dark fantasy territory because of the MMC’s behavior, but at the same time, the book gives off a surprisingly cozy feeling toward the end. It’s a strange positioning, but it works overall for this story.

Now, for me, I didn’t love the ending—and that’s why I was initially confused about my grading (leaning more toward a 3 than a 4 originally). The conclusion of the case doesn’t hold the same weight, logic, or emotional intensity as the rest of the book, which was disappointing. The tone shifts into something surprisingly cozy—almost too cozy for the darker foundation that was built earlier. The resolution lacks the emotional impact and narrative weight you expect after such a strong buildup, and it weakens the payoff for both the plot and the character arcs. The world stakes diminish instead of crescendoing, and the romance doesn’t fully reconcile the earlier physical and emotional harm.

Overall, though, it’s a very engaging debut with a compelling dynamic, great slow-burning tension, and strong potential. I’m definitely curious to read more.

This is one of the best standalone fantasies I've read in a very long time. You follow Semras, and her journey throughout an interesting and unique world of witches and witch hunters (Inquisitors), on a path to solve a murder. The resolution was gripping, with a hoard of plot twists I didn't see coming but made a perfect amount of sense.
Semras as a character failed to be very compelling to me, but her relationship with Estevan made up for that. The chemistry was fantastic, lead with beautiful, poetic dialogue. The writing itself was stunning, and the plot, while slow at points, was enthralling. Overall a fantastic debut and I cannot wait for more from the author.

I feel neutral about this one. I absolutely love the cover and was expecting a really dark fantasy romance. I'd say it was dusky, not exactly dark.

There was a little tension, but I think I was expecting more and felt a little let down. I liked the witch vs witch hunter aspect though.

It has the bones for a really good story. I can see why it was popular with other readers.

♾️⭐️ wow. READ THIS NOW. This book was everything that I wanted it to be, I loved every word and already know that I will definitely be rereading it again and again. The enemies to lovers is done to such perfection that even I didn’t see how they could ever end up together. The murder mystery aspect was executed flawlessly. There are plenty of plot twists that were sprinkled in to where if you weren’t paying attention, you wouldn’t have seen the foreshadowing. To be honest, I have nothing but overwhelming nice things to say about this book but I know without a shadow of a doubt that I will continue to read all that the author puts out. Amazing, flawless, beautiful, no notes.
I received this as an EARC for reviews but I will add that 50% of the war through I immediately ordered a physical copy because I need it on my shelves ASAP.

ARC provided by BookSirens | 3.75 ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (rounded up to 4⭐️) 1.5 🌶️ | slow burn and emotional tension

“Wisdom said only a madman would walk uninvited into a witch’s lair. (…) Both a madman and a fool, then.”

I truly enjoyed reading A Weave of Lies - an immersive gothic romantasy set in a Spanish-inspired 18th-century world, a tale of forbidden love, witchcraft, and moral conflict. It follows Semras of the Coven Yore, a Wood witch who can weave magical threads, and Estevan Velten, a ruthless inquisitor whose faith is tested the moment he steps into her hut.

Both MCs are in their thirties, which brings a refreshing dynamic to the story. Semras is brave, fierce, and compassionate — loyal, selfless, and unafraid to challenge Estevan’s authority even when everyone else fears him. She secretly saves his life more than once, longing for a peaceful life and genuine love. Estevan is proud, outspoken, and relentless — his arrogance hides deep wounds and moral turmoil. As the story unfolds, his lies and hidden truths become central to the fabric of the plot, giving meaning to the title A Weave of Lies.

From their first encounter, the enemies-to-lovers tension is gripping ❤️‍🔥 sensual, witty, sharp, and full of restraint. The romance burns slowly but with palpable intensity, carried by excellent chemistry and moments of humor (yes, even involving cologne mishaps and late-night cuddling 😅).

I loved the weaving-based magic system, the gothic tone, and the thoughtful details such as the book’s division into three parts, the glossary, and the map. The writing beautifully balances atmosphere and irony.

However, the pacing feels uneven — the push and pull between love and hatred becomes exhausting at times, and the investigation subplot often fades behind the romance. From around 40% onward, the numerous twists and betrayals make the story harder to follow, and the MCs’ extreme reactions occasionally feel inconsistent. The world-building, though promising, could have been more developed to support the strong emotional arc.

Still, this is a very promising debut and a satisfying standalone with a HEA. The author also revealed that this story opens the Woven Worlds universe — each book will be a standalone featuring secondary characters and would love to meet them again — Callum, Sir Themas, Sir Ulrich, and Nimue — and see Semras and Estevan hopefully return in future works!

“I am cruel, yes. So are you,” she said, brushing her lips against his. “We cannot change what we are. So be greedy. Be cruel. Be mine.”

Key Takeaway:

Perfect for readers who love:
✨ slow-burn enemies-to-lovers
✨ witch x witch-hunter tension
✨ gothic romantasy atmospheres
✨ morally grey characters
✨ standalone stories with emotional resolution

My rating:
Emotional Impact – 4
Character Connection – 4
World-building – 3.5
Plot & Pacing – 3
Writing Style – 4.5
Romance Arc – 4
Spice Level – 1.5 🌶️ slow burn, emotional tension, fade-to-black scenes

🖤🩶 I received an advance review copy (e-ARC) for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. A warm thank you to the author E.M. Riedl and BookSirens for the opportunity to read this story — I’ll definitely be watching for the next Woven Worlds installment.

Semras of Yore and Estevan Velten, the Inquositor share a loathing and hatred for one another that is tangible off page.

Semras has experienced some of the worse ridicule and discrimination from patriarchy with superiority complexes. No one truly takes time to truly know Semras. Her services are requested by Estevan, which she obliges for the sake of helping her sister.

With all the growth Semras went through, it was hard to not appreciate this character - her perseverance, determination and unwavering strength alligned with my constitution of character.

Estevan gave me whiplash. This man's character had me feeling a tumultuous amount of emotions. Love, hate, loathing, love (again), frustration, irritation and suffering. This man was insufferable, but in all the right ways.
This is a true enemies to lovers, which I was living for.

The tension, banter, loathing and love blended with a contrasting storyline that is both enthralling and light, with plot twists that throw you off your centre of gravity.

Honourable mentions - Cael, Maz and Sin.

I think this was E.M Reidl's debut novel. TBC. Highly recommended!!

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

The story follows Semras, a woodwitch whose quiet life is interrupted when an inquisitor named Estevan Velten comes to her door. Instead of hunting her, he asks for her help to solve a murder.

Even though I love a good witch x witch hunter story, I found it hard to connect with the characters. Their emotions and actions often changed suddenly, and I did not really feel any real chemistry between the FMC and MMC. They fell into lustxlove too quickly (they knew each other for 2 whole days btw), when I was hoping for more buildup, tension, and yearning.

The world building also felt weak. The author did not give much background about the mythical creatures or the magic system, even though the few details we did get were interesting and fresh.

I would have loved to learn more about the witch purges, especially the last one, and about the inquisition in general. The story had several plot holes, too.

The pacing was uneven, which might be why it took me a while to finish the book. It was hard to get into the flow of the story. The first half dragged quite a bit, while the other half felt rushed.

The book was also described as a dark romance, but I did not really feel that. It touches on darker themes, but I would not call this a dark romance.

Where do I even begin with this book? I was taken on a tumultuous journey, one that I will never forget. From the very start I was hooked. Semras, my dear Semras, I fell in love with her attitude, and her unwavering stability in what she believed in. My heart broke for her, cheered for her, felt confused and scared for so many times. Estevan, I don’t even know where to start with him. I didn’t know whether I loved him or hated him multiple times while reading. The emotional whiplash that I experienced was one so unique; I had never experienced anything like it while reading a book. There were so many twists and turns that I never expected. As soon as I felt I had a grasp on what was happening, a plot twist that rocked my world came into play. Thank you so much E.M. Riedl and NetGalley for allowing me to read this wonderful ARC. I am counting down the days until October 23rd to get my hands on a physical copy. I am ecstatic for others to read this and experience the magic within these pages!

"Wisdom said only a madman would walk uninvited into a witch's lair. A madman, or a desperate fool".

So, what is Inquisitor Estevan Velten, a madman or a fool? Oh, he is all that and so much more. He’s the kind of character who makes you want to strangle him and hug him at the same time. A man of endless layers, with truths buried beneath his lies. A living, breathing oxymoron. An Inquisitor, yes, but…

And who is Semras of Yore? A witch, an herbalist, a poison connoisseur. A firecracker. A storm. A soul who has yearned to love and be loved ever since she was a little girl.

Together, who are Estevan and Semras? A pair that should never exist. A forbidden duo. A witch and an Inquisitor.

"W𝘦'll destroy each other, won't we?"
"Without a doubt."

In a world where witches are stories of myth, still feared and hated, Semras and Estevan set out on a journey to solve a mysterious murder that could set everything ablaze once more. Born and raised as enemies, forced to work as allies, they thrive on wit, banter, and razor-sharp quips. Yet beneath it all, something more dangerous than hate begins to grow. Dangerous in its yearning. Dangerous in its desire.

In a world where their bond should never have existed, Semras and Estevan must discover whether they are mad, desperate, or just desperately in love. As desperately in love as I am with this story, in all its entirety.

Their tale may have reached its conclusion, but so many loose ends and potential futures remain. And I, for one, cannot wait to see who the next protagonists will be. Thank you, E.M. Riedl, for this gem; it was an absolute pleasure to be your ARC reader.

4.5✨

E.M. Riedl's A Weave of Lies is much more than a Witch and Witch Hunter romance. As a debut standalone, this blew me away. Plethora of things going on here. Political intrigue, romantic tension done very well, mythical creatures, talks of modernity and religious corruption. I feel that barely scratches the surface of what this offers.

Semras is a wood witch pried from her home to help the Inquistor Estevan. With another Witch Purge on the horizon, they set in motion to prove a fellow witch innocent of murder. The title is very fitting. It got to a point where I was questioning multiple interactions trying to decipher what was a lie, half-truth or the truth. Riedl does a phenomenal job on redirection and meddling with the investigation. The lies and constant action, either between the MC's or outside dilemmas, kept my eyes glued to the pages.

One can't help but fall in love with these characters. Semras is a fierce to be reckoned with edging on crossing over a dark magical boundary. Meanwhile Estevan has his own hidden internal struggles alongside finding the culprit to his mentor's death. The burden is very heavy on his shoulders yet he carried it skillfully. To top that all off, they are constantly fighting the undeniable but natural attraction. I am very glad that the plot was never hindered by the romance. The push and pull is extraordinaryly balanced.

The magic system is unique yet has speckles of elemental magic. It made understanding the weaving magic system a bit easier. Mainly the pace was at a medium/fast speed which I don't mind. The only issue I had was that I didn't get much time to appreciate certain aspects. For instance, I loved seeing the forest through Semras eyes. As a wood witch, it's captivating and complex. The downfall is I wanted more of it to grip onto. I only wish that that was drawn out with a bit more vividness. The writing style is not lackluster but I wouldn't describe it as eloquent. The sarcastic humor was top notch perfection.

Thank you to E.M. Riedl, Victory Editing Publisher and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thanks to Netgalley and Victory Editing for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

The cover of this is stunning and is what drew me in initially but the blurb sold me. I’m a sucker for high tension enemies to lovers but unfortunately this did not hit for me.

I really struggled with the pacing of this. I found the start of this very slow and it took me out of the story.

It was hard to connect to the characters. Their moods and how they acted was so up and down and sometimes very out of character that I literally had whiplash. I didn’t feel the chemistry between them and it did also come across pretty insta-lusty which is a shame as I thought there would be more tension/build up.

I did like how it concluded and seeing the connection between the two main characters there, but I feel like this could have been built on throughout the book. I love a slow burn and tension/yearning but didn’t get that with this book.

I would have loved more information about the world and the fey and a bit more backstory into previous history between the witches/hunters etc. I found the weaving aspect really interesting and the different paths they could take.

Add this to your witch x witch hunter recs asap - this is a must-read for the season. I love that it’s a standalone: a quick one-and-done moment that still delivers a beautifully fleshed-out magical world. You will fall head over heels with the characters and become obsessed with their addictive dynamics. If you’re craving a moody, high-tension dark fantasy romance where every look could be a threat or a promise, this one’s for you.

Tropes:
🔮 witch vs witch hunter
🔮 enemies-to-lovers
🔮 forced proximity
🔮 slow burn
🔮 banter galore
🔮 groveling + yearning
🔮 murder mystery

Thank you to NetGalley and the Victory Editing team for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

"𝙄 𝙖𝙢 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙣, 𝙎𝙚𝙢𝙧𝙖𝙨. 𝘾𝙖𝙣’𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙄 𝙖𝙢?"

Weave of Lies by E.M. Riedl

• witch x witch hunter
• enemies to lovers
• forced proximity
• murder mystery
• magic & mayhem
• slow burn & tension

This book was haunting, hypnotic, and so beautifully written that I had to slow down just to savor the words (and that’s saying a lot if you know me). The prose is lush and extremely deliberate—every sentence feels like silk and shadow—charm and uniqueness throughout.

It has 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨: witches, fae, mythic lore, demons, murder, deceit, and a romance tangled in tension and betrayal. It’s a dark fairytale, fantasy mystery, & slow descent into obsession.

Semras of Yore is one of those heroines who digs a hole into your heart. A witch called upon by an inquisitor—the very kind of man who should’ve burned her—for help solving a case. From their first meeting, you can 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 the hatred and tension between her and Estevan Velten. It’s electric, volatile, and impossible to look away from—enemies to lovers done right.

“𝙒𝙚’𝙡𝙡 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙮 𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧, 𝙬𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙬𝙚?” “𝙒𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙖 𝙙𝙤𝙪𝙗𝙩.”

Estevan. I loved him, I hated him, I wanted to strangle him and devour him all at once. He’s manipulative, self-righteous, cruel—and yet infuriatingly magnetic. Their relationship is hate to love in the rawest, most painful sense: built on mistrust, defiance, and the kind of slow-burn tension that borders on straight agony. Their banter had me holding my breath.

“𝙄 𝙗𝙚𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪, 𝙄’𝙙 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙚.”

The world itself feels alive: dark forests, ancient covens, creatures that are equally terrifying and mesmerizing. The imagination shines in every corner of this world—rich, detailed, and deeply atmospheric. The thrill & mystery deserved every twist and hit like a revelation.

Beware of the emotion of this book. The cruelty Semras faces, the betrayals, the manipulations—it’s brutal and infuriating, but perseverance in its purest form. She’s scared and scarred, but she never stops. By far one of my favorite FMCs this year.

“𝙒𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙮. 𝘽𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙪𝙚𝙡. 𝘽𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙚.”

By the last few chapters though, I was spiraling. The twists came fast and sharp, and that ending left me stunned—half confused, half in awe. And with it being a standalone—the end is just… the end.

This book is dark, poetic, and unapologetically complex—a tale of magic, deception, and survival that lingers. It’s a debut that puts 50% the “enemies to lovers” books out there to shame, and one that proves E.M. Riedl is an author to watch.

Thank you to E.M. Riedl and Book Sirens for the arc opportunity!

3.5⭐️ (final rating)

This was quite a ride for a read. I would say I was quite satisfied as an overall read despite the things that I wasn't fond of this story.

For a dark witchy fantasy, I did enjoy the things that were given here. There was quite a diversity or uniqueness of witchy elements, or should I say a witch's nature of power that I really find interesting. Another was that added murder mystery solving going on here, which I would say was a good combination to the story.

FMC and MMC- Semras and Estevan's (The Inquisitor) dynamic was really fun at most. I enjoyed their banter here that was really full of fire and hatred and obviously attracted towards each other, and because of their nature of division in 'kind', it gives off an angsty forbidden romance going on but that was kinda ruined after the 'supposed info at home' of Estavan but the angst is still there.

At some point, it kind of feels frustrating and not in the good way for me - more like an annoyed one, and at one point, I feel like I would have liked it if this was not a HEA.

Cael and Estevan's dynamic was really fun, I just wished there were more of them, and at some point as well, I wish this was more of Cael and Estevan, like 'brothers conflict trying to solve a murder with a romance subplot' because I think it would have been a really good one in my opinion. Either way, this was a good read despite my thoughts on that.

Another thing I complained about was the underdeveloped world building. The potential of this story was there, and it's already good, in my opinion, despite that, but imagine if the world building was more fleshed out? There's just kind of felt like a few blank spaces going on here with its inconsistencies in the development of events.

Lastly, I really disliked Semra's stupidity at times on the knights' fear on them like you are witch and you know the prejudice against the witches and the crusade against your kind yet you have the audacity to be confused with their hostility on your person because you are a witch? Like, I know it's wrong to judge the majority because of a few or your differences with each other, but like??? It's already been established, and you yourself have the knowledge of that, but why are you so stupid sometimes? It's so infuriating in a sense how many times it's been explained to you.

Overall, I think this was an okay read. I'm really hoping for Cael's story and Sir Themra's, Nimue, and Sir Ulrech's and perhaps Estavan's father and mother's story because so far, these characters really intrigued me.

¿𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘢 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘳?

Semras lives a quiet life in the woods, that is until inquisitor Velten approaches her with an unexpected request. Now she’s bound to assist him, but the man has secrets and it's only a matter of time before she gets caught in his weave of lies.

First of all I want to thank NetGalley, Victory Editing and E.M Riedl for providing this arc, I had the best time reading it

If there’s one thing you need to know about me, it is that I love enemies to lovers and this book delivered exactly that. It wasn’t something like they hated each other for the first five chapters and then fell in love all of a sudden, no, there was actual hatred there! And the banter omg it was amazing

I loved the plot so much, it was mysterious and intriguing and had me hooked from the very start trying to figure out who was behind all of it, and the plot twists? Just let me say my jaw was on the floor

The characters were amazing!! The fmc is what I would consider a soft fmc but equally strong and fierce, and I adored her! The mmc was everything I would expect in a man bound to hunt witches. They were both very complex in their own ways and that’s what I love the most. The side characters were also incredible and I'm hoping we get to know their stories (I have a feeling we will)

Now the romance, uff I just couldn’t stop kicking and giggling the whole time. Like I said, they hated each other but the tension was so palpable and when they finally admitted their feelings was so wholesome I looked like an idiot smiling at the screen

A weave of lies is coming out oct 23, so if you're interested in books with eerie vibes, off-page intimate scenes, amazing plot and a delicious romance, this one's for you

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced reader copy of this book.

4.25 stars - This book was a JOURNEY! What do you get when you have an inquisitor, hunter of witches, who seeks the help of a witch to solve a murder involving potions? Estevan walks into Semras’s home and claims he needs her expertise in potions to acquit the sole suspect who, you guessed it, is a witch. To clear her coven, Semras reluctantly agrees to join him. A witch and inquisitor are the unlikeliest of allies, and clash at every moment on their journey. They can’t trust each other, they despise each other, and when Semras finds more about the case, things start to get crazy!

I went into this with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised! I enjoyed the bickering, the tension, the secrets, the lies, and the mystery in the plot itself! I like how complex Semras and Estevan were as love interests and how their dynamic was fleshed out over the book. At one point I despised Estevan, but Riedl lured me back in and I ended up being a fan of him! These two were enjoyable to read.

Overall this was great! I loved the witchy atmosphere and think this is a perfect read for fall!

‘The inquisitor smirked. "Quick and simple. And predictable," he said. "I have yet to meet a charitable witch. You will be no exception."

By the Old Crone and the New Maiden, that man loved the sound of his own voice. He was getting on her nerves on principle before; now, he seemed devoted to turning it into something personal.”’

3.5 stars rounded up!

One thing I will say about this book… it was not predictable. I enjoyed how the author had a cozy writing style and intense character interactions. The dialogue was entertaining and smooth, with the FMC and MMC at odds from the first chapter (the quote above being an example).

The FMC goes on an unfamiliar journey full of prejudice and uncertainty, but does not lean on others or back down. She is very likable, which is refreshing in fantasy right now! The magic is also interesting and unique.

I do wish the world building was stronger and the characters were more consistent. There were a couple of twists and turns that were a little unbelievable for what we had seen of the characters up to that point.

I see great potential for a more books in the same world, and I will be continuing!!

Thank you NetGalley and Victory Editing for the e-arc!

This hit my dark-fantasy sweet spot: witch-magic, a murder knot to untangle, and an Inquisition that smells like smoke and secrets. The forced-proximity setup between Semras and Estevan is A+, and the world-building feels lived-in and natural without the typical plot-less fantasy encyclopedia. Their banter has teeth, the uneasy trust kept me tense, and I was happily glued to the pages.

That said… the romance rides a constant enemies/“maybe lovers” rollercoaster, and after a while it gave me a little emotional whiplash. I also wanted a clearer why behind Semras’s attraction to the inquisitor; the chemistry is there, but the motivation sometimes reads like forced vibes over evidence. The relationship arc can feel slightly rushed next to how carefully the world itself is built. And yes…the ellipses… are doing… overtime.

Still? Compelling in the best way—sharp atmosphere, morally gray magic, and a finale that pays off. If you like your fantasy with claws and consequences, this delivers.

(Read as an ARC; opinions are my own.)

Just Wow 🤯
As a debut book, this was amazing. It really was a True enemies to lovers. The plot, politics, characters, build up, plot twists and yearninggg. The way the author wrote, it was beautifully executed.
It is a long book, but it reads as a standalone. So it made it worth to get through this book. Honestly I’m so glad I read this book! Can’t wait to read more by this author.
