In a world of high-class magic and gangster grit, a star-crossed couple must decide where their loyalties lie in the sizzling romantasy follow-up to BookTok star Stacey McEwan’s New York Times bestseller A Forbidden Alchemy.
In Belavere Trench, the Artisans and the Craftsmen are at war. Patrick, the last Alchemist, and Nina, the world’s only known earth Charmer, have been captured by the Artisans, putting Patrick’s rebel union in a precarious position.
Though he hasn’t forgiven Nina her betrayals, Patrick has other things to worry about. He is finally reunited with his father, a prisoner of the Artisans, and the group lands a narrow escape only with the help of Nina’s first love, Theo. Decoding an ancient prophecy, they set off in search of an infinite supply of idium that will determine the course of the war, should it prove more than a myth. Fleeing across Craftsman towns on the brink, they will encounter old friends—and enemies—in search of answers.
DNF @ 33%. i want to say this is 100% a me thing but maybe it isn't....i don’t not think this is a bad book but i simply do not care, at all. i had a lot of fun with book 1 and enjoyed the plot, the characters and the romance but reading this instalment felt like wading through mud. i can’t really explain why but something about this had me feeling zero connection to the story or the characters, like it just completely flatlined. anything i did feel towards them evaporated, which made it really hard to get through even this much. it literally took me days to read barely 10%. the pacing felt so off and honestly i felt like not a lot was happening. also, bare in mind i picked this up less than 3 weeks after finishing book 1 and i still had to rack my brains for what was happening. it was almost like nothing was sticking.
i think if you absolutely adored book 1 then i’m sure you’ll enjoy this one but i’m really disappointed as i expected this to be another enjoyable and fun read. to be honest i can’t even say it’s unenjoyable just very meh, boring & everything started to drag very early on. after the ending of book 1, i expected more than what i got from even the first 33% (which was basically not a lot at all). i can acknowledge i only read 1/3 of this book however, for book 2, i would expect some more development at this stage. i felt like we barely moved forward from the end of book 1 in the whole 33% i read. as i made the choice to DNF, i can a quick look at some lower ratings and others who felt the same was as me seem to feel like the whole book suffers from poor pacing so i can’t imagine i’d disagree. i also feel validated cause i genuinely spent a few days thinking i was the issue and i just had to keep reading.
ultimately there was nothing special or interesting about this. if you weren’t completely obsessed with book 1, i really think you could struggle with this one as well. i can completely appreciate the idea behind this storyline, it just wasn’t executed in a way that worked for me. apparently the ending of this is really good but i’m not dragging myself through a long ass book to get to it. nothing makes me more grumpy than a book that gives nothing just to deliver a great ending - usually i end up too disconnected to care. so i am taking myself away from this one. unfortunately i wont be continuing this series. of course this is just my experience and my opinion and we all had different experiences with books - so i’m sure the right people will absolutely love this.
typically if i rate my DNFs, 1 star is where i land but something about that didn’t work for me with this one. i have no negative feelings towards this - simply just not for me. so rounding up to 2 felt more hitting for how i feel about it. maybe also because i know i dipped earlish on. i debated rating it at all but in the end i decided too - i know rating DNFs can make some people uncomfortable but this is a readers space and my aim isn’t to come across as mean, it’s just how i personally feel. this is probs going to be a very unpopular opinion but i am always going to keep my thoughts 100% honest. but life is too short to force myself through something that is going to feel like a waste of time and i know myself, if this is how i feel now - there is no way i am going to suddenly be obsessed with it. ________
thank you simon & schuster australia for the e-arc (via netgalley) in exchange for an honest review!
Oh, you thought book 1 buried you with plot twists? Book 2 literally tears a seam down the middle of the world and pushes you in so you can’t climb back up.
“How could I tell him that I was every bit as terrible as he feared and still have him love me in the end?”
After the deepest level of betrayal, Nina and Patrick navigate a path (or should I say tunnel?) covered in glass. The pain is real, the cuts are deep. Two shattered hearts trying to figure out if they can piece themselves back together again. The growth, THE TENSION and the longing had me on the edge of my seat. PLUS we have Theo stirring the pot!
“I think you and I . . .we’re meant to carry on as we are. Broken parts and all.”
I will die on the hill that Patrick is Tommy Shelby. Can we please bring suspenders back? The loyalty this man has for his family, his town, the ones he loves - it’s unmatched!
Book 2 also expands the world, that crazy network of underground tunnels all lead to towns that get to to be explored! As the characters get pulled to different locations we also get to learn more about the history & origin of magic. Be prepared, there are so many insane twists! Theo, Polly, John, Rose.. arrghh I can’t!
I honestly can’t wait for book 3! I’m not ready to leave this world so I’m diving into a re-read of book 1 🙌🏼

“If I was a knife, then I could rip and slash and gouge until the aching ebbed. It wasn’t idium I wanted. It was revenge.”
“Patrick’s eyes had always been a danger to me. One glance, and I was swallowed”
Literally need this in my hands yesterday. It's been two months and I'm still thinking about book one. I miss Patty.
Ngl, while I am not surprised bc AFA is phenomenal and deserves a million NG requests for AFP, the NetGalley denial stung a little bit for this one BUT Saga is a real one for sending that sampler. I am SO stoked and I cannot wait for Summer to get my hands on this book!!!

Me after seeing the cover reveal and reading that cosmo exclusive chapter sneak today
HUGE thanks to NetGalley & Simon & Schuster Canada for a chance to review this arc!!
A Forsaken Prophecy was a much better reading experience for me than its predecessor. The writing had a perfect flow and I didn’t want to put this down for at least 80%. The characters were more believable and consistent in their actions. I found myself warming up to Theo, which wasn’t something I expected after reading the first instalment. In terms of character development, I’d give this sequel 4.5/5 ; new lights & layers were added to the characters that made them more human and easier to sympathize for. The only thing I struggled with has to do with the plot… because I wondered why was it that they walked into every possible trap along the way. Patrick lost a bit of his wits in this one ; but one could argue that he had a lot on his plate and I would agree. I saw every twist coming but I do have an over analytic brain so it might be on me ; it didn’t hinder my reading experience.
This series doesn’t shy away from its darkness and that’s something I can also appreciate. I grew in extreme poverty and I find it’s not always a topic every author can grasp but Stacey McEwan can definitely grasp a lot of its complexity. I appreciated that she went more into depth with that topic in this sequel.
Now the strong suit of this novel is definitely the romance. He loves her so much that despite all she put him through, her safety still comes first and that is something I burn for. The slow burn and longing were just right. I read this author’s previous trilogy and I find she writes the best romances.
This was a good reading experience for me ; I liked this sequel and I’m excited for what’s to come in the last one.
3.75⭐️ I was anticipating this to be a 4.5-5⭐️ read, so I am a little disappointed that it didn’t quite live up to my expectations! While the world-building is one of the series’ greatest strengths (think elemental magic wielders, class divisions, and gangster/mafia influences), there wasn’t nearly as much plot movement compared to the first book.
My biggest critique, however, lies with our FMC, Nina. I was REALLY hoping to see more character growth from her. In the first book, I found her very passive, often struggling to make her own decisions or stand up for what she believed in. I expected the sequel to showcase more of her individuality and confidence, but she still remained a rather bland character.
In contrast, our MMC, Patrick, continues to be a sarcastic and charming smooth-talker. It was so entertaining watching him fight his feelings for Nina while also being ridiculously overprotective of her. This man is probably the only reason I actually finished the book.
Overall, if you loved the first book like I did, there is a chance you may still enjoy the sequel. But if you didn’t care much for the first book, I wouldn’t expect this to completely change your mind about the series.
“You seein’ this shithole?” “I’m blind, cockhead.”
Donny strikes again! Possibly my fav side character ever! He gives Carrion a run for his money.
This book picked right up where it left off, and that was in a gut wrenching scene, the emotions were high reading through this story with the hurt, anger, betrayal, the heartbreak, the quests and the friendships!
“War was a gentlemen’s game. Women were just the currency”
The blue balls the slow burn gave me were big! Stacey, you’ve ruined me for all other men. No one will ever compare to Patrick!!!!!
“When you look up at me like that, darlin’,” he said in warning, “it’s like darin’ me to ruin you.
This book gave me life during the worst reading slump of my life...I cannot get enough.
It picks up right where we left off, in the worst way possible :) mommy I am scared, the angst is aching my chest. Will they ever be happy and free again?
I was not only on the edge of my seat with every (absolute shitshow) these characters had to experience, but the YEARNING was impeccable. I would live, breathe, and die for Nina and Patrick's story. If you ask me for any book recommendation ever, this series will be my immediate go-to.
Final note for Miss Stacey herself, that ending was diabolical and I have not felt sane since I finished it! Therapy bills are being sent over.
This starts off so strong — literally picking up right where the last book left us, which I always love in a sequel. It immediately pulled me back into the story and the world.
One of the big changes in this book is that we get quite a few new POVs. The first book was just Patrick and Nina, so it was interesting to see the story open up to other characters. I’m not totally convinced the extra perspectives added a huge amount overall, but they were still a welcome addition and helped flesh out the wider world.
Around the 40–60% mark the pacing dipped a little and things slowed down. Personally I didn’t mind too much because there were some really lovely moments tucked into that section — little bits of absolute gold. Miss Trunk, the old woman who can only communicate through piano in her antiques shop, was such a standout character. And Polly discovering all the letters Otto had sent her after she betrayed everyone? That moment hit so well. There were some real gems in this book — I just wanted even more of them.
Patrick and Nina still completely have my heart. I adore them and I’m desperately hoping we get even more of them in book three. And Donny’s wit was such a welcome reprieve during some of the heavier parts of the story — I loved every time he showed up.
The prophecy about the three daughters was such an interesting concept, but I do think it could have been a bit clearer. I kept expecting some big reveal — like Nina being an ancestor or somehow holding the powers of all three sisters — something that tied it all together in a bigger way. Because of that, parts of the book did feel a little bit like a bridge or filler book in the series.
That said, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and the yearning was absolutely on point.
I will 100% be picking up book three — honestly I cannot wait!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was nervous for this book, not gonna lie. So many books suffer from that sophomore book curse where the heroine goes on her hero journey and finds self discovery or whatever. This book did not feel that way at all.
I'm so distraught now, having been in a book slump for WEEKS. Stacey revived me but also I NEED BOOK 3 ALREADY. Back to Slumpville I go.
This book gave everything that I hoped it would. We got to see more lore, more heart, more Patrick 🫦, just more.
Thank you so much to the author, Saga Press and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this title. I attest that I am leaving my review voluntarily and honestly.
ok ms. stacey really knows how to write an absolutely unhinged, anxiety-driven ending because that last 15% had me on the edge of my seat the same way a forbidden alchemy did.
this book sucker-punched me straight in the gut (in the best way possible). the twists? insane. the tension, banter, and yearning? immaculate. the drama, action, magic system, and betrayals just kept piling on, and I was eating up every second of it.
I do wish the pacing had been a little more consistent throughout, which is why this wasn't quite a five-star read for me. but I still absolutely love these characters, the magic system, and the crazy high stakes.
also... patrick has me on my knees. the way that man yearns??? the devotion?? the pining?? I am unwell.
This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2026, and I’m honestly so glad I got the ARC because it completely lived up to the hype. The entire time I was reading, I kept thinking, this is so good. And what’s even crazier is that feeling never dropped—not once. If the book had ended at any point, it still would’ve been a 5-star read for me. And when I got to the actual ending? Same feeling.
It never lagged. It’s fast-paced, super engaging, and I was locked in from start to finish.
What really stood out to me is that this book delivers on everything. So many romantasy books lean heavily on romance and let the plot fall to the side—but not this one. The plot, the world, the storyline—all of it is incredibly well done. And then on top of that, the banter is phenomenal. Not just between Nina and Patrick (which is amazing), but between all the characters. The dynamic between the men had me laughing out loud—I could literally hear their Irish accents the entire time.
And the tension between Nina and Patrick? Painful in the best way. The yearning is so well done and just keeps building the entire book.
I also loved the additional storylines—Theo, John—there’s just so much here to sink into, and it all works together.
I could honestly go on and on, but bottom line: I loved this book. I’m fully obsessed, and I cannot wait for the next one. This series is already shaping up to be one of my all-time favorites.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy. All opinions are my own.
This is book two in The Artisan Trilogy, where Patrick the last alchemist and Nina the only earth-charmer are caught in the middle of a full-on war between magic factions and end up chasing an ancient prophecy that could decide the entire conflict. It’s basically rebels, betrayals, exes showing up, and a road-trip quest for a mythical resource while everyone is fighting for power.
I feel like this is peak romantasy chaos with politics, tension, and messy feelings layered on top of worldbuilding. It reads like dramatic fantasy TV in book form, and I’d be here for the emotional disasters.
This was one of my top anticipated reads of 2026 and it did not disappoint!! The world in the series is by far one of my favorites! And the relationship of Patrick and Nina is just the best! You thought the twists were amazing in book 1! Buckle up for the roller coaster of book two! The yearning, the mystery, the anticipation that is in this book is phenomenal! I am beyond thankful I was chosen to receive an arc copy of this book! If you do not have it preordered… you need to add it to your cart immediately!!
I’m in awe of McEwan’s storytelling. This book had no lags and pulled no punches. It had me reevaluating things I thought I knew about certain characters and expanded on the world’s lore flawlessly.
Book 1 explained Crafters and Artisans well, and book 2 expanded on that by explaining the Stewards better. Book 1 introduced the religion and origins of magic with the 3 sisters, but book 2 brought a whole new level to the importance of that myth. Book 1 had an amazing romance where the MCs, while we rooted for them, were lying quite a bit to one another, and book 2 shows the fallout of all secrets being revealed. I really really really loved how the story developed from book 1 to book 2.
But PATRICK. THE MAN THAT YOU ARE. He wants to help Nina be strong herself instead of solving all her problems for her, and I love their dynamic. The best romance in a romantasy that I’ve read in a hot second.
If this is what book 2 is like, I’m afraid (and SO excited) for what the finale will bring!!!
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with an e-arc for review.
A Forsaken Prophecy - Stacey McEwan (eARC) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
I loved this book. Think peaky blinders with alchemy and magic. Each chapter had me page turning with high stakes and plot twists. I appreciated the extra world building and the lore gave us some backstory to the history of idium, magic and the how it came to be. Even though Patrick and Nina are at odds following the events of A Forbidden Alchemy, it doesn’t stop their yearning and yes, it is a slow burn 🤌🏽. And…now to mention that ending 😳, Stacey McEwan has done it again - I have so many unanswered questions and I’m still thinking about it! So now the long wait begins.
pros of being an ARC reader: reading the sequel early. cons of being an ARC reader: finishing the sequel early and realizing you now have to wait forever for book three
2.75 aaah, this book is so hard to review as I ADORED book one. I loved the peaky blinders vibes, the magic felt authentic and different but this book took me forever to get into and even then, my attention dipped in and out of it. The pacing was off and I felt the plot was going around in circles, particularly in the middle. A lot was happening but also not a lot? I was kinda thrown. however, the slow burn was BURNING and the tension was ❤️🔥❤️🔥 I feel like I need to sit with this one
One of my most anticipated releases of 2026 and it was INCREDIBLE. Absolutely FLEW through this book and now I’m sad it’s over! Love the world and characters so much, I can’t get enough of them and could read 1000 more pages.
Full review to come! In the mean time I beg you all to pick up A Forbidden Alchemy ASAP.
Thank you heaps Simon & Schuster Australia for the eARC, I already want to reread it 🥹
While there was a lot to enjoy about this second instalment, it didn’t have the addictive quality of the first book which was disappointing.
I have tried to keep this review free from direct spoilers, but it may reveal some details from book one.
This book picks up right where book one ended and had a strong start—I loved the forced proximity between Nina, Theo, and Patrick—but overall, the pacing felt a little slow. My interest dipped in the middle, with a lot of repetition (travelling, fleeing, planning their next move) and not much action—a lot happened, but at the same time, nothing happened. However, the final 30% definitely piqued my interest again, and that epilogue has me eager for the final instalment because what are they going to do now?! The story ends on a strong hook rather than a major cliffhanger.
We got several new POVs, which I enjoyed because they gave me more insight into the side characters. The downside of switching between multiple POVs across different locations is that it can sometimes halt a story’s momentum.
While there are plot developments in this book, I felt it was almost a 50/50 split between plot and character development, which is perhaps another reason the pacing dragged for me at times. I also wish the story surrounding the three sisters had been a little clearer, but perhaps that will come in the final instalment.
Patrick was absolutely delivering on the longing, restraint, and yearning, but having him and Nina emotionally separated for so much of the book unfortunately added to my dip in interest around the middle of the book. The spice scene towards the end also felt a little out of place in terms of both the dialogue and the actions, and the “fuck it” moment didn’t quite land for me.
I did enjoy seeing some character growth towards the end, especially from Theo. Don’t get me wrong—he is far from perfect, and I did feel like his feelings for Nina were brought back solely for the drama and to get more reactions from Patrick, BUT I am glad Stacey didn’t make him the generic jaded ex-lover character. I liked seeing his internal conflict and watching him finally take a stand against his father. I’m just a little disappointed that it was mentioned he could control water within the human body, yet he never used those supposed abilities. I don’t know if this was a plot hole, but it was disappointing.
Nina’s character let me down in this book. I wanted more from her. She seemed so reliant on Patrick, which would have been understandable on occasion, but throughout much of the story her personality felt flimsy.
Overall, I enjoyed the expansion of the world, and the stakes have definitely been raised with that reveal in the epilogue, but it didn’t charm me quite as much as the first book. I am, however, hopeful for book three, as I suspect many of the issues I had with this instalment—the repetitive scramble plot and disrupted character dynamics—won’t carry over into the final book.
💭📖 It’s not often a book leaves me completely speechless but this one did. The moment I closed it, I just sat there, trying to process everything.
Absolutely magnificent. I devoured every page.
Stacey has such a talent for pulling you into her world and making you feel everything. Every emotion hits, this story is a full emotional rollercoaster, and I was completely along for the ride.
We pick up right where A Forbidden Alchemy left off, and from the very beginning I was on the edge of my seat. The plot is so well thought out, the storytelling is incredible, and those twists! Some genuinely had my jaw on the floor. The way the world building expands from book one is fantastic and makes the story that more interesting.
Patrick and Nina, I love so them. Their chemistry is electric, intense, and completely addictive. You can feel every moment between them. Also their growth and character development was spot on!
And when an author makes you care just as much about the secondary characters, you know the story is something special. I was just as invested in them, sometimes even raging at them too 😂
If you’ve been thinking about picking up this series, do it. I can’t recommend it enough, you won’t regret it.
4.5!!! I have been SO excited to read this and boy it did not disappoint. As this story continues, so does the heartbreak, betrayal and hurt from literally allllll povs. It’s quite intriguing seeing how they all endure the circumstances and I feel like gives good perspective on how shit sometimes just keeps hitting the fan over and over and over again but you must keep going. My girl Nina, I feel for you, I do. What a shit situation you’re in. YET I think all this pain, suffering and devastation will inevitably lead to rage and destruction which I personally can’t wait to see 😛 Patrick Colson, the man that you are. DEAR LORD the way he speaks would have me doing unspeakable things. He has the weight of the world on his shoulders and he thinks he’s doing a bad job and is a bad man?!? If I were in his position I would be losing my ever loving mind immediately and probably making the worst decisions possible. He’s perfect, literally can do no wrong in my eyes. I really like getting the different POVs, especially Donny boy, he’s a little ham. Also I’m super sus about Tess, and this is a biased opinion because I’m just not a bit fan of all of her but I’m getting a miners shiver about her.
That ending?? Like I said shit is hitting the fan over and over and over and over and over again. I have no clue how things can possibly be resolved but until the next book comes out I’ll be yearning for my sweet gangster baby patty.
A Forsaken Prophecy was such an amazing book! While I personally didn’t love this one as much as I did book 1, that doesn’t take away from the fact that this book is still a wild ride!
The story picks up right where book 1 left off: right in the middle of all the action. We are introduced to several chapters with different character points of view (aside from just Nina and Patrick this time around). I usually love multi pov books, but I’m not sure if in this book it made it seem like so much was going on while at the same time almost nothing was happening. Maybe that’s just a me problem though?
The romance once again stood out for me. I absolutely adore Nina and Patrick but somehow Stacey had me rooting for Theo too?!?!?! Like ahhhh I know he’s hung up on Nina but like could we maybe find him another perfect love interest so Nina and Patrick can have their happy ending (which I’m hoping they do actually get)!
Anyways, I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to read this book early! Unfortunately, that now means I have to wait even longer for book 3. 😭
Thank you so much to Saga Press for the advanced copy!
“In her sleep, she said his name. Wide awake, he whispered that he loved her.”
I am so so happy to have gotten an early access copy of this book, but I can’t believe this means I’ll have to wait even longer for the next. This series is really shaping up to be one of my favourite of all times.
A Forsaken Prophecy did not fall under the second book in a trilogy curse. This book was fast paced, action filled and I loved it just as much as the first one.
I love how 3-dimensional so many of the characters are, I would argue there isn’t a person in these books who isn’t morally grey. Throughout this book nobody is scared to do what needs to be done, and they are ruthless.
I think my favourite dynamic throughout this book is between Patrick and Theo. They are both so ready to do anything that needs to be done for Nina, even if she might not return their feelings right now.
Stacey McEwan does such a great job of letting us hear the accents, just through words.
I’m so excited to see where the next book goes after the ending. Can’t wait to be worried about Nina and Patrick until then.
Phenomenal. Chef’s kiss. 5 stars. In fact, take all my stars.
Incredibly action packed, not a dull scene. It picked up right up from that godforsaken cliffhanger in Forbdiden Alchemy, one book ending I will never forget. My heart was constantly racing, I was at the edge of my seat, you could not pry this book from my hands when I was immersed into it, loved every second.
Patrick. Patty, my man. I LOVE HIM. He’s so perfect. No notes.
An absolutely perfect second book for a trilogy, which as they say is very hard to do. Stacey knows what she’s doing and she DELIVERS.
The world politics. The romance. The tension. The character dynamics. THE DIALOGUE. Loved it all!! Girl knows how to keep my interest, and keep my heart racing because omg the stakes.
Stacey I need book three. I can’t wait a year, PLEASE!
