sad to say it, but this series has dragged on for way too long and genuinely needs to end already. There’s too much unnecessary crap going on and I genuinely miss when it used to be just humans vs vampires!!

As a whole Seraph of the End kind of lost me, and I think many fans, in the volumes numbers mid 20s and especially with some of the stuff in the early 30s. But as we get closer and closer to our finale it’s been coming together much better than those rockier volumes. I think it’s a blend that he’s trying to tie up loose ends (many created in that rocky patch where the density of lore and characters just proliferated) causing everything to have a sense of coming to a close. I think the writer also enjoyed expanding on certain characters due to the sales allowing it but now that it’s closing up the story is coming together a bit more focused as well. I think the artist is also being given some material that works better with the new artstyle with the many lasers, beams, and chains looking nice in how completely white and blank they are as well as the many nice poses. The new artstyle does well with poses and they’re interspersed nice enough to avoid the “talking head” problem some graphic novels can struggle with.
This volume did great with continuing closing in on the finale. Everyone is in the same city, people are finally fighting instead of getting close to fighting, and plot threads are finally being executed on. I think this volume is fairly nice.
Once again, forgive the rest of the review which is a plot beat by plot beat countenance partially to help myself remember everything that happens.
Rigr and Urd continue to be eternal doomed lovers that fight and can’t come together due to whether or not follow Sika Madu’s plan. At least, I think. It’s a bit hard to follow what with how much plot has been put into this series. Urd’s forever struggled to find meaning in life whereas Saito (who was surprisingly quite peppy and cheery as a kid) always strived to make his own meaning to life. Urd looks up to that and wants to end Saito’s suffering (of just existing in a shitty world). But then he turns into a demon in his lover's arms doomed yaoi style. Leaving Saito to deal with Guren and Ferid’s team knocking on his doorstep. They try to play up the drama of it all as Saito helped create both of his enemies by turning Ferid into a vampire and (in a very sudden and offhand lore drop) built Guren from his own DNA.
As a reminder, Saito is fighting off Guren, Ferid, and co. over who gets Mika and Yu so they bring all the angels or humans back. Well, prior and during this whole fight Yu is just downing food to give Mika energy to parse through Sika Madu’s memory lol. Turns out Sika Madu stored some of his power in Angel Mika and Yu still has some of his Angel Mika powers within him. If they can harness Angel Mika’s light magic, Sika Madu’s shadow powers, and get the sinful keys together they can achieve everyone’s goals in hiding Earth from Paradise (and as such God), reviving Mikaela plus the humans and vampires, and then destroying Paradise. But they need to do it in that correct order to succeed and without help from someone like Shinao it’s impossible. Then it’s revealed Mika and Yu both have a mixture of Angel Mika and that weird eyeball Yu. Honestly, I hate that. The whole Mika is Yu and Yu is Mika thing was complicated enough. Blending that weird spirit soul stuff even further is just confusing and I don’t think it does anything.
Then Saito and Yu fight against Ferid and Guren’s group. Yu v Guren’s group was ok though all the illusions on illusions got a bit confusing. It ends with Guren revealing that if he does resurrect humanity he’ll suffer living eternally (I guess as a vampire) with Mahiru as his demon haunting him. That moment didn’t really hit mostly because Guren’s whole “tortured good guy” deal has been going for far too long without any real development, is largely hidden in a light novel series, and is only scratched upon in the main series. Ferid’s fight with Saito only happens for a bit before he goes into his mind to talk about the point of living with all the vampires in his weird spirit tree before absorbing them to have le epic battle next volume. Shinoa’s squad is pretty absent from this though looking ahead to the chapters in Mangaplus I’m quite glad as I think they’ll add a lot of complexity and chapter length and I’d like the series to make some headway before that slows the pace again.

Eh, I'm not sure about the plot anymore, maybe it's time for a re-read.
