In Common Sixth Sense, mindfulness mentor and educator Rachael Schmidt offers readers a guided practice to help us reconnect with our most authentic selves. Written to help seekers connect to a life that feels true and purposeful, the book teaches us about the noises that often distract us. This includes the constant lure of technology, life stressors, and especially for me, the clutter of possessions that seem to own my energy. Schmidt brings us to the heart of the matter: we lose ourselves from inner guidance when we pay too much attention to external demands. The answer lies in focusing on a journey that takes us within ourselves to reconnect with what we’ve blocked.

Common Sixth Sense is well organized in a way that readers will find easy to digest. She offers brief sections, short reflection statements, and contemplative questions. This design will allow readers time to pause and absorb her messages. As I read, I felt like her words were coming to me in a calm, quiet manner. It made me feel like I was learning from a compassionate mentor rather than a lecturer.

Schmidt’s background encompasses over twenty years of spiritual development and mindfulness-based training. The author also shares personal reflections, which help enrich her messages. Readers will see that she engages in the same practices that she teaches. Introspective questions will provide readers with valuable thoughts to journal. The emphasis on returning to one’s inner source will resonate with seekers, such as myself, who are feeling pulled in too many directions, most of which are caused by the overwhelming pace of modern life.

Common Sixth Sense is a valuable resource that will continue to be re-read over the years. Now that I’ve read it, I plan on going back and taking more time to go in-depth. I plan on journaling my thoughts into a five-year journal where I can observe how my thoughts shift as I learn new insights that pertain to the current times in my life journey. I expect this to help me avoid veering off the path again.

Readers who want a compassionate, reliable guide to more connected, authentic living will love this beautiful resource. They will find peace in reconnecting with the inner voice that so many of us have drowned out. I am so grateful that Common Sixth Sense arrived in my life when it did. I am happy to have a priceless guide that will help me live a more intentional and authentic life.

I could not have read a better book to start off the new year then Common Sixth Sense! Life happens, and in the midst of chaos we may lose a piece, or all of who we are. We begin to waste our energy on things that we shouldn’t be, and drain ourselves. (I am guilty of this more than I’d like to be) Over the last few years, I’ve let that chaos overtake me and then I was sitting there one day thinking, who am I anymore? If someone asked me that question, my response would be I am a daughter, sister, wife, and mother. But who am I really?

Backed by over 20 years of both personal and professional experience, Rachel incorporates her own life within this book and I truly loved seeing her perspective. It’s not a book where she tells you that you’re doing something wrong and how to fix it, but how to dig deep and find your inner self. Find those spaces we are wasting energy on and how to adjust. Awareness. Breathing. The authentic self that may feel like it’s lost and just out of reach. (At least, that’s how I felt before reading this book). It’s a journey of self, meant to be taken alone, but you’re never alone.

This is a book I would recommend you take your time with (Oh, and I highly recommend reading! Seriously.) Change won’t happen overnight. I know I will be referencing back to this for a long time. And, the more we tap into that inner self, the more we water it again, we are allowing our authentic self to be free!

I appreciate the opportunity to have received a gifted copy and my review is honest and voluntary.

Common Sixth Sense is all about reconnecting with the inner voice most of us have been taught to ignore. Rachael Schmidt walks readers through the idea that intuition isn’t some mystical gift, but a natural, everyday guidance system that gets drowned out by the noise of life, social media, stress, and constant distraction. Through personal stories, simple frameworks, and thoughtful reflections, she shows how learning to slow down, tune in, and notice what your mind, body, and heart are telling you can bring more clarity, calm, and alignment. It’s less about fixing yourself and more about remembering how to trust what you already know deep down.

What I loved most is how practical and grounded this book feels. For years I thought I was just overthinking everything, but now I realize I was often intuiting far more than I gave myself credit for. Schmidt’s reminders about how much the world’s noise pulls us away from what truly matters really hit home. The reflection questions are incredibly powerful, and I appreciated that there’s no rush to get through this book. It invites you to sit, process, and grow at your own pace. This is the kind of book you underline, write in, and come back to again and again. I already know I’ll revisit it in the future and be excited to see how much my journey and thinking have evolved

"Common Sixth Sense" is one of those rare books that feels both comforting and motivating. Rachael Schmidt has a gift for explaining intuition and self-awareness in a way that is grounded, relatable, and easy to apply to everyday life.

One quote that particularly stood out to me is, “Some people are limited in awareness, self-awareness, compassion, and common sense. Do you know anyone like this? Stop expecting people with low tanks to behave like they have full tanks.”

This especially hit me because after working all day at an elementary school, coming home to my husband and kids (who I love with everything in me!), I usually feel so drained and like my tank is empty. In those times, I don't always say/do the best or right thing because I'm not fully myself and fully self-aware of everything going on, and I hate that. I defer decisions to my husband because my brain just can't think that deeply. I second-guess myself constantly. But after reading this book, I'm more motivated to be easier on myself!

If you are interested in personal growth, emotional intelligence, or learning how to listen to your inner voice more confidently, I highly recommend this book. I finished it feeling more grounded, aware, and connected to myself.

Thank you to the author and Katie Rock Literary services for the gifted physical copy.

As a psychiatrist, I am always looking for new techniques for managing stress, and this book was a great read to learn some new ideas. This shows how people can learn how to return to a state of calm - which is so important in the crazy world of today. It’s an easy-to-use, practical guide that anyone can implement and was written not for medical professionals but for all people. I really liked how Rachael breaks everything down so clearly, and provides simple methods that people can use wherever they are and at any time to reconnect and calm themselves. The exercises and tips were great and could be used for children all the way through adulthood. I highly recommend this book if you want to learn about grounding oneself and taking the step back to find your sixth sense.

Common Sixth Sense by Rachael Schmidt is a self help book about becoming your true and authentic self by using your sixth sense and also learning how to incorporate deep breathing into your life. This book walks you through the author's journey and also takes you through your own journey as a person and how to be you and not anyone else. I think that the author did a great amount of research about the topic and also personally believes what she says. She walks the readers through so many tips and also asks many questions such as: What kind of energy are you sharing with the world? And Who are you? These are important questions that you need to ask yourself to find out who you are and what you stand for in this life. I really enjoyed this book and think that you, yes YOU, should read this one!

Common Sixth Sense is a practical, grounded guide to developing intuition and cultivating greater happiness through meaningful mindfulness skills. I especially appreciate the creative, down-to-earth analogies the author uses to illuminate concepts that can often feel abstract or hard to grasp. The author’s sense of humor brings levity to the reading experience, making the journey feel lighter on the nervous system while still deeply insightful.
If you’re looking for a simple, actionable, step-by-step framework—and you’re ready to embrace the challenge of doing the inner work—I highly recommend this book. It’s an accessible and encouraging companion for anyone seeking to reconnect with their true self.

This is one of those books I will go back to often. I really enjoyed it! It honestly felt like a bundle of hope for a slightly trying time in my life. A tool that will benefit me more than I think I even realize at this point. A reminder that a shift in one area can do things for so many areas in our lives. I haven’t get been able to implement the simple strategies and tools given to us in this book for very long yet but I truly look forward to seeing a positive change from focusing back inward and connecting with myself again. The breath and the blue line! I absolutely LOVED the way the book was written. Made it so easy to follow along with and take in the information! Thank you for a wonderful book. I am grateful to have been able to read it.

With me going through a transition in life, this book arrived right on time. I read through this book, knowing that I will be reading it again to throughly take in all the information.

I loved each chapter, but I would have to say Chapter 8: The Longing spoke to me the most. I know that it's time for me to dive into the deep end.

This is a book that I will find myself picking up throughout my life. I love the information shared, the questions, guidance, and so much more.

This book met me right where I am — in the middle of the noise, the clutter, and the quiet longing to trust myself again. Schmidt’s voice is steady, clear, and deeply compassionate. She doesn’t offer fluff or forced positivity — just real tools, real insight, and a gentle nudge back toward your own inner guidance.

It’s more a companion than a guide. A reminder that peace isn’t out there. It’s already yours.
