Not a big kaiju guy, but the setup of this book looked interesting, and lo - 't is interesting! And fun! And it's one of the few first volumes of a manga series that feels like it finishes a story arc, and not just ends on a cliffhanger. Okay, it still does that (manga's gonna manga), but you've had a pretty substantial story before it.
The art is impressive, and when we encounter a cat-sized Gaea-Tima (the titular kaiju), it actually looks cute. So that's possible, who knew.
A very solid start indeed.

I received this one from the publisher/Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
This was OK. At times a bit boring or a bit much (yes make sense of that, haha). But I do love love love the Kaiju designs (they were seriously so cool) and the battles that we see between Kaiju (so cool) and seeing how our MC can summon a Kaiju (GAEA-TIMA who is apparently connected to her after the events in the beginning, and seriously I laughed so hard when he appeared in the washing machine). I am curious how the summoning works exactly, so far it seems water is the key but maybe there is more to it. I also loved seeing the various kaiju and I am curious to see more of them. There is also a cast of interesting characters, our MC who has been through a lot and the Kaiju peeps. I also liked the mix of seriousness with silliness.
I am definitely hoping to read the next volume as well!
I've always been a huge fan of the Kaiju universe and so reading this was super exciting for me This was my first graphic novel about the universe, and I really enjoyed it from start to finish. I liked how there was a time jump from past to present and how Miyako already has a history with a Kaiju. I thought the art style was unique and pleasant to look at/read. Since this is the start to the series there was only a little bit of world building but still nonetheless a solid start.
A big thank you to netgalley for providing this wonderful story.
For the past 10 years Miyako has believed that trouble follows her, even though all she tries is to help. A decade ago her town was attacked by a kaiju, while many see Gaea-tima as a monster many see him as a savior. GAEA-TIMA, makes a sudden appearance after another kaiju descends from the deeps of the ocean. Tatsukuni appears and figures along side his team and miyako that she’s been keeping this kaiju within her and might have imprinted with her eventho all that scares her they’ve noticed that she might be the salvation to all these kaiju’s return. Now she’ll be helping instead of failing she’ll do what she can to help keep everyone safe.
I love kaiju mangas/ comics and this one has got my attention. A girl who thinks that she fails while she’s trying to help and she’ll take this opportunity and do what she can to keep everyone safe even if it’s using a kaiju to defeat other kaijus. I sure do recommend. The arts amazing it captures everything to perfection, the emotions and just the beautiful view or everything going on.

I received an ARC though NetGalley for an honest review.
This was a really interesting opening volume that seems to combine Godzilla, Attack on Titan, and maybe Pokemon? with a monster of the week.
Gaea-tima is the kaiju thr that absolutely isn't Godzilla. It appeared in the past, caused mayhem, death, and destruction, but following it's disappearance the fishing became spectacular and the town thrived. Now kaiju are attacking the port again and Gae-tima saves the day in classic Godzilla fashion. Unlike Godzilla, Gaea-tima is inextricably linked to the the protagonist in a bizarre manner that will likely be explored in further volumes.
This is a fun take on kaiju with some really cool designs and I'm intrigued to see more, but it didn't quite knock my socks off.
If you're a fan of Kaiju and are looking for a fresh take on the genre, this manga may very well be what you're looking for.
The story is off with an attack on Miyako's hometown by the kaiju Gaea-tima. She survives and, ten years later, has developed a complex relationship with the kaijiu. Their attack destroyed the town, but the aftermath helped the town folk thrive financially. All of a sudden, the town experiences an increase in Kaiju activity. Gaea-tima makes a reappearance, but surprisingly, they seem to be protecting the town this time around.
Because this is the first volume, the pacing is a little slower. I don't mind that, persoon. my preference for manga worldbuilding is getting to know the characters and the issues at hand. We don't have to wait a long time for things to start getting adventurous, and I was bummed when I hit the end of the volume before I'd realised! This is definitely a series that I'll be continuing to follow.
*Thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for advanced copy for review*
This was so much fun! If you enjoy kaiju/ Godzilla I would definitely check this out. The story is just getting started, but there was already a kaiju battle. Can't wait for second volume!
I really enjoyed this. It's just the first volume so I can't really judge it too much but it was a brilliant introduction and I think the premise is cool. The character introductions were also good, I can see myself really liking Miyako and I think she's a great MC. This wouldn't be a priority for me to keep up with but I would definitely keep up with it, albeit a little irregularly.
Thank you so much to the publishers, authors, and Netgalley for providing me with a free ARC/copy of this book in exchange for a review :))
Miyako had a run in with a giant creature from the sea that destroyed her town but also led them to a time of economic prosperity afterwards. For her sake, she spent the next several years sculpting what she saw and selling the sculptures to tourists who visited her oceanside town. Now, as young adult adult, GAEA-TIMA has returned, along with secret agents who believe her connection and her sculptures could be a key to understanding the creature. This is certainly a crazy story with some interesting twists and turns, as well as some comical yet detailed art to heighten the reading experience. I feel for Miyako, who has had her entire life absorbed in the threat of a monster returning to destroy the rest of her town, and now she's being dragged into the fray again in a very different way. This was a very interesting start!
I am so sad to say that this manga did not meet my expectations. I was kinda nervous about going into it seeing as its kinda a play on Godzilla and king kong in a way but I didn't expect it to fall this flat for me. I honestly feel like we didn't get much history on what the creatures are and what the reason they came to the mortal realm. I also expected the fighting scenes between the creatures to be a little better. I don't think I see myself reading more in this series but I would like to read more from this author to see if its their writing style that I am having issues with. I am still thankful that I read this manga because it opened my eyes to something that I know not to pick up again so all in all it did help me explore my reading taste and show me what I like and what I don't like.
Although I wanted to enjoy this, I just didn't. I grew up with the nostalgia of Godzilla; one of the movies even came out the year I was born. Despite that I found myself just bored with this story. It didn't give us time to connect at all to the characters so they felt rather stale. There's a mild element of body horror (?) I found utterly revolting and while I understand it serves the plot, I really cannot get behind it. Sadly, I do not think I will continue the series. It could definitely get better, especially as audiences get emotionally attached to Gaea-Tima, but for me it did not work.
It's been 10 years since GAEA-TIMA, a giant kaiju, showed up on the coast of Sukuba Town and subsequently wiped the town off the map. This destruction caused a tourism boom and seafood explosion which has led to the rebuilding of Subuka Town. Now a decade later GAEA-TIMA has shown up again and our protagonist Miyako is once again at the place the kaiju emerges.
This manga pleasantly surprised me! While I expected a serious story with some small comedic relief akin to Kaiju no. 8, GAEA-TIMA the Gigantis was way funnier than I had anticipated. It shows some true innovation in the genre. I can see why some people compare this to Go Go Loser Ranger. The combination of combat with humour is also reminiscent of early Jujutsu Kaisen.
This volume starts with an engaging opening sequence, rendered in colour, that immediately gives high stakes to consider and introduces us to our main character. Miyako is a relatable, loveable protagonist and I am already enjoying her interactions with the other characters that get introduced in the second half of the volume.
I appreciate how GAEA-TIMA the Gigantis incorporates typical Japanese aspects like the need for and popularity of mascots, the general idea of kaiju, and the outflux of young people from smaller towns across the country. This first volume sets up a wonderful foundation that subsequent volumes can build upon.
GAEA-TIMA the Gigantis is your next favourite read if you enjoy scifi stories regarding kaiju featuring interesting characters exploring different aspects of Japanese culture. I'd recommend this manga to people that have enjoyed elements of Kaiju no. 8, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Go Go Loser Ranger in the past.
Thank you KENT and Kodansha Comics for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
GAEA-TIMA the Gigantis is by far one of the most thrilling and unique Kaiju comics/mangas I’ve encountered in ages, and it doesn’t even feature Godzilla! The story centers around Miyako, a young survivor of a devastating Kaiju attack, who miraculously survives the horrors of a rampaging beast known as GaeaTima. Yet, in a mind-bending twist, years later, the very creature that once nearly ended her life is reborn, and in a shocking revelation, its mother is none other than Miyako herself! (No weird Kaiju sex stuff ya pervs!)
This wild, visually stunning manga is an absolute ride from start to finish. The vibrant Kaiju-filled world is a breathtaking feast for the eyes, with towering creatures and epic destruction brought to life in exquisite detail. The quirky, unpredictable characters inject a refreshing sense of fun and unpredictability into the plot, creating a unique dynamic that keeps the story moving at a perfect pace. Whether it’s the action packed sequences or the quieter moments of emotional depth, the manga strikes a fantastic balance throughout.
With its impeccable artwork, captivating narrative, and just the right amount of offbeat charm, GAEA-TIMA the Gigantis is a delightful experience that kept me hooked from cover to cover. The pacing is great, making it a seamless and highly enjoyable read. Without a doubt, I’ll be eagerly picking up volume 2 to see what wild turns this unpredictable Kaiju saga will take next! Godzilla/Gamera fans go pick this bad boy up!
Ten years after a monster devastates a sea-side town, you'd think that any mention of its name would have people running for the hills. instead, the town has become a tourist destination for those interested in the kaiju dubbed "GAEA-TIMA" and the bountiful fishing industry it left in its wake following its mysterious disappearance. Miyako, a girl who became famous following her dramatic survival for the attack and subsequent career selling tourist trinkets of the beast, is treading water in the wake of her continuing trauma and feelings of inadequacy. When the waters stir with mystery and monsters once more, will Miyako and her community be able to rise above and figure out the reason for GAEA-TIMA's reappearance - and can they prepare for the reality that there may be more like him?
As a certified Godzilla stan (I know people hate the 1990s movie with Matthew Broderick but I've probably seen it 13 times, and it helped spawn a lifelong love of radioactive lizards), I was instantly drawn to the idea of a Godzilla-like creature who emerges and re-emerges, leaving both destruction and abundance in its wake. I also love the drama and discussion that follows giant monster attacks, and this series promises to deliver all of these things and more as Miyako and her friends (and enemies) deal with the re-emergence of an old antagonist (but is he an antagonist?), and I'll definitely be seeking out the second volume of this book to find out what happens next! I think if you like Kaiju No. 8 you might end up liking this series so far as well!
I requested and received this book from NetGalley. My opinions are my own.
"Gaea-Tima The Gigantis" has the potential to be an amazing series. This was such an good opening for the series. I'm left with so many questions and I worry for the future of the characters.
This series could pack a truly heart wrenching puch. That is not to say that it doesn't/won't have lighter moments as there were a few in this volume. It just also touches on a few darker subjects communities bouncing back after tragedy, bodily autonomy, and the fear of new threats.
Something that hit me almost immediately was the way people became grateful for the cause of the tragedy. Rather than being grateful for the power of their community they were grateful for Gaea-Tima.
Anither moment that hit me like a truck happens in "Episode 4: Welcome to Fune". It's in regard to bodily autonomy and Miyako. I won't go into details but you will know when you read it.
I'm want to continue this series. I need to know what's going to happen. This volume ends on a cliffhanger (like most manga). And I have so many questions. Like: What is going to happen with that crazy fisherman? Why is everything happening now? Will they make real life Gaea-Tima merch? Regardless. I'm excited for the next volume 2! Even if this series is going to give me nightmares. (Because big monsters in the ocean is my nightmare fuel).
Uuuh! Kaiju!!! 🔥
A huge thank you to NetGalley, Kodansha Comics, and KENT for providing me with an ARC of GAEA-TIMA the Gigantis 1 in exchange for my honest review.
GAEA-TIMA the Gigantis 1 introduces readers to a town once ravaged by giant monsters. After surviving a devastating attack years earlier, the town has reinvented itself as a bustling tourist destination. Among its residents is Miyako, who makes a living by selling replicas of the very monster that once terrorized the town. But when one of these giants suddenly returns, everything changes.
This manga is an exhilarating ride, with dynamic and visually stunning artwork that captures the sheer scale and terror of the monsters. While it shares similarities with iconic works like Godzilla, GAEA-TIMA offers a fresh perspective with its own unique twist on the genre. The blend of monster action and human drama creates a compelling narrative that keeps you engaged from start to finish.
With its exciting premise and captivating visuals, I’m eagerly looking forward to the next installment in the series.
I really enjoyed this manga. I’m a big Godzilla fan so this was right of my lane. I can see where the spirit of Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One came to play in this manga. If I were to say that I can even see some similarities between this manga and the Godzilla tv show ‘Monarch King of Monsters’ especially in the beginning.
The graphic was good and the text was easy to read and follow. I love that we are getting a different take from this type of story when it comes to monsters. I love the different designs of the Kaiju, love how they weren’t all the same shape and size.
My main criticism for this manga is that it’s the first book of the series they could have spent more time introductions the setting and characters so that way the readers would feel some type of connection with the main protagonist and the people who are getting impacted by these monsters.
Looking forward to see how this series progresses.
I recommend this to fan of Godzilla or anyone who loves anything to do with monsters and them teaming up with humans to fight against other monsters.
Thank you to the publisher for giving this Arc at NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
GAEA-TIMA the Gigantis is a kaiju manga and the main character is a girl. GAEA-TIMA is a monster that ravaged a town and now ten years later, the town uses the whole thing as a tourist attraction. Miyako survived the attack and now makes replicas of the monster until the monster comes back...or comes back from Miyako as she spits a marble that ends up being GAEA-TIMA. This was a truly interesting development of the plot surely. I liked the mystery behind everything and I do hope it will be developed piece by piece. I would've liked to know more about the main character and the town though. We are too fast in the middle of the battles and whatnot and it's hard to grasp anything. The past is very interesting as it makes the people who they are, but we don't get to enjoy it.
The art looks good, nothing too fancy, but it works. GAEA-TIMA looks like a cheap monster toy though...The problem is that the setting isn't built well enough for the reader to care yet. Thus the manga is mostly fighting and monsters here and there without any reason. I hope this will get better though.
Ten years ago, a Godzilla-like creature called a Kaiju emerged from the Sea of Japan. Its arrival sent a massive wave inland which destroyed the entire town of Sukuba before it disappeared. Luckily for the town’s surviving inhabitants, the sea became murky which created a breeding ground for seafood, so that the town was rehabilitated and became a tourist destination.
During the Kaiju’s appearance, Miyako had looked it right in its eyes and it changed the course of her life forever. As an adult, she has become notorious for the extremely lifelike figurines of that exact Kaiju. Ten years have passed and another Kaiju has emerged in the Sea of Japan, altering her course once again.

A kajui destroys a small seaside town, and 10 years later, the town reveres the kajui as a good luck idol. But after 10 years, that lucky kaiju suddenly returns again. This story clearly is meant to focus on Gaea-Tima and Miyako's connection to it, both from a literal sense and from her trauma. But something about this story didn't click for me. I think because it happens so fast, you don't really get to sit with anything you learn. It's just rushing off to the next thing. I think this series will be one of those "let him cook" types of stories, where it doesn't start to get good until volume 2 or 3. I did like the art style! It was pretty unique, and it's clear that the artist loves drawing kaiju. The kaiju designs are really good, and none of them feel like a basic Godzilla rip-off. Hopefully, the story pacing will even out in the next volume.

Years after a giant monster known as GAEA-TIMA leveled a small seaside town, the community has rebuilt itself into a tourist hotspot centered around the event. Miyako, a survivor of the attack, now makes a living selling kaiju-themed souvenirs. But when signs of the monster’s return begin to surface, the town is forced to confront what it really means to live in the shadow of something so destructive.
This had a strong opening. A good balance of fights and worldbuilding. It’s fast-paced, too. I liked the realistic take on the aftermath of a kaiju attack, with merchandise, tourism, and the town trying to move on. The art is solid, though some of the action panels are a little hard to follow.
If you’re into the kaiju genre and want something that focuses on the people as much as the monsters, this is worth checking out. Overall, a promising start. I’m looking forward to seeing where the series goes.
This is a really good Kaiju story. Kaiju (怪獣) is a Japanese term meaning "strange creature" or "monster," and most generally refers to the giant monsters featured in Japanese science fiction films. Think ‘Godzilla’. These giant monsters often attack cities and engage in battles.
Volume one of this new Kaiju series introduces us to a monster known as GAEA-TIMA which devastates a small seaside town and then disappears, but the devastation simply puts the town in the map. Ten years later, the town is a tourist destination because of the monster but then the monster returns.
The heroine Miyako, wants to know why the monster has returned and so she teams up with some out of town scientists to discover the real reason for the beast.
Great artwork, good story and a giant monster, in summary a really good read and it will be interesting to see how the story develops.

Thank you to Kodansha Comics and NetGalley for the eARC to review.
Volume 1 covers the first 4 chapters of this brand new Kaiju manga and is already building up to be an action-filled series with a heart-warming story. When we meet Miyoko she's experiencing feelings of regret, shame of the day the kaiju attacked and is emotionally detached to the GAEA-TIMA figurines she's making. It's not until she meets someone who admires the kaiju does she begin to view her unique relationship to the monster in a different way. The humour in this volume is light and enjoyable and gets the tone balance of tension and warmth just right. The illustrations are beautiful and dynamic, able to convey the movement of the ocean around the fighting kaiju with a smooth ferocity.
I'm definitely interested in reading the rest of the series and seeing how Miyoko and GAEA-TIMA's bond grows closer.
I would like to said thank you to Kodansha Comics and NetGalley for allowing me to read this comic/manga book 1 of the Gaea-Tima the Gigantis 1. This book 1 is part of the series. Reading this in less within 2 days wasn't bad. It was interesting to read because it about a monster who destroy the town but then there was more monster and a group of researcher that create this monster things are trying to protect the town or grab those. I going to give this book a 3.5 stars. I will definitely continue to read this series.
A really fun read about a poor fishing village that is destroyed by a kaiju. Ten years later, the village has rebuilt itself as a tourist destination and our female lead makes a living by selling her kaiju art. The village has thrived after the death of the kaiju caused the water nearby to come alive teeming with fish. But now another Kaiju has appeared, and as well as the village is doing now, people died last time and the village isn't looking to lose everything that they have managed to rebuild.
I enjoyed this story and the set up for future volumes. I can't wait to read the next one.
One of my favorite kaiju artists talked about really enjoying this manga and as I love their art and giant monsters I figured I would give it a shot. I really love it! It’s a story of rectifying with grief and regret through a connection with a 300ft tall monster. The premise is solid and I love the characters. Especially the titular Gaea-Tima who has such a fun and genius design. The monsters look like they are humans in monster suits and I think that is neat! I’m excited to check it out further as I am hooked.
