My Husband’s Child by Lisa Timoney writes an extremely fast paced family drama that was absolutely incredible! It is a story about a 22-year-old woman who has to take care of her younger sister. And then many things go wrong… This book had quick chapters, which I enjoy. It has Dual POV which is also a great thing. It also features a lot of unusual family dynamics which helped make the book more addicting. Lots of great twists as well! You will like this book if you enjoy thrillers and character driven books!

Thank you Boldwood Books for providing this Ebook for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

This is a fast-paced family drama about a blended family that hasn’t quite blended yet. The description drew me to select this book. It has short chapters, which make it a fairly quick read. The story is told from 2 points of view.

But this book was not quite what I was expecting. I wasn’t overly fond of any of the characters. There is a lot of entitlement and whining. The plot was predictable, including the twist at the end. Both these facts contribute to my rating.

It didn’t evoke any tears from me, as the description promised. It was more of an eye-roll.

I will still give it 3 stars. It was fast and entertaining. It’s a book that I was able to read at a very busy time in my life. And it would be perfect for a beach read or an airplane read.

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the Advance Readers Copy.

This heartfelt family drama follows Katie, who longs to adopt her stepdaughter Maisie after learning she cannot have children of her own. Standing in her way is Olivia.

Liam’s older daughter, who resents Katie and believes only she can give Maisie a stable home. When tragedy strikes, the two women must set aside their rivalry to protect the little girl they both love.

Timoney writes with deep compassion, exploring what it truly means to be a mother by blood or by choice. It’s an emotional, fast-paced read that pulls no punches; have tissues ready, as it will make you both cry and hope.

Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult and Jojo Moyes who love stories about family, loyalty, and difficult choices.

A gripping, tear-jerking story about love, belonging, and finding family where you least expect it.

Holy s**t this book gripped me from the beginning. Lisa Timoney, you've done it again! The story gave me whiplash with the amount of emotional turmoil it put me through, which is a testament to you as an author.

Before I begin this review, I'd like to add some TRIGGER WARNINGS, just for those readers who may be sensitive to the content in the story. I'd also like to add a *spoiler alert*.

TW: IVF, miscarriage, baby loss, death, domestic abuse, drugs misuse, hospitalisation, injury, ICU

This novel is introduced as an emotional tearjerker that explores the complexities of step-parenting and the definition of motherhood. Unlike a standard mystery, the tension here seems to come from the impossible choices made by two women who both love the same child.

The story follows Katie, who deeply loves her six-year-old stepdaughter, Maisie. Since Maisie’s biological mother passed away, the little girl has been living primarily with her older sister, Olivia (who is Katie’s husband Liam's adult daughter from a previous marriage).

The conflict ignites because Olivia carries a deep-seated resentment toward Katie and refuses to see her as a mother figure. When Katie expresses a desire to formally adopt Maisie to create a "proper" family, it sets off a devastating chain of events. When tragedy strikes the family, the friction between Katie and Olivia escalates into a battle over who can provide the best life and security for Maisie.

All sounds relatively straight forward so far, right? But here's where things start to get weird. It's also where I started to scream at the book as if the characters could hear me!

I'm going to caveat this next part by saying that for me, what was occuring here was obvious from the moment the character walked in, because of my career as a therapist, but it made it all the more gripping because I couldn't stop what was coming.

Enter Will, Olivia's dream man, who from the beginning seemed to give Olivia everything she's ever wanted. Initially presented as a supportive partner, Timoney quickly reveals him to be a master of manipulation. His abuse is characterised by a slow, methodical erosion of Olivia’s autonomy and it's done so in a way that is so true to lived experiences, that it sent multiple shudders down my spine. This is where the trigger warnings for domestic abuse comes in.

Will expertly exploits the existing tension between Olivia and Katie. He subtly encourages Olivia’s resentment, framing Katie as an "enemy" to ensure Olivia feels she can only rely on him. He then uses Olivia’s grief and her fierce protectiveness over Maisie as levers. By pretending to be the only one who truly understands her pain, he creates an emotional dependency that makes it harder for her to see his behaviour for what it is. Dangerous!

Will also exerts power over Olivia’s decisions and movements, which is where we see the financial and emotional abuse aspect of his ploy. His influence is so pervasive that Olivia begins to lose her sense of self, making choices that prioritise his approval over her own well-being or even Maisie's.

The dynamic around custody of her little sister adds a layer of tragic irony to the plot. While Olivia is 'fighting' Katie for custody because she believes she is the only one who can keep Maisie safe, she is herself in an increasingly unsafe environment. Will’s presence makes her home life unstable, which Katie eventually realises, leading to a gut-wrenching moral dilemma.

The novel highlights how domestic abuse often hides in plain sight within the "perfect" lives of others. I have to commend Timoney for how she has done this so accurately and respectfully, in a way that shines a light on the perpetrator for being cruel and calculated, rather than the victim blaming trope we can sometimes see in these narratives.

Timoney handles this subject with significant weight, illustrating how abuse isn't always about physical scars, it's about the psychological cage built around a person until they no longer recognise their own voice or reflection.

TL;DR

An incredible story.

Hooked from the beginning.

Found myself screaming at the book as though the characters could hear me.

Knowing what I know with my career, I saw the red flags from the start, but that made it all the more gripping because I couldn't stop what was coming.

Very real issue and it was done in a way that I felt was incredibly respectful for those of us who have experienced emotional abuse and how subtle it can be.

I couldn't put it down. 10/10.

Ever since Katie met her husband Liam five years ago she has adored her six year old stepdaughter Maisie and would love nothing more than to adopt her, even more so since she discovered she can't have children herself but, her other stepdaughter, twenty two year old Olivia, isn't having a bar of it. Maisie has been living with her big sister ever since their mum died a couple of years earlier and Olivia hates Katie, blaming her for taking their dad away from them, even though that's not true. Then she meets a young man on a night out, within a few short weeks love blossoms and she starts to think that, together, her and Will can give Maisie the security she needs. When an incident occurs that puts Liam's life at risk, both Katie and Olivia need to pull together for Maisie, but danger is lurking where they least expect it...

This emotion and drama packed tale is the latest novel by Timoney and, like all her other books, in any of the genres this author writes, you know you're in for a treat and a heartstopping read. Once again I started this one and was hooked from the start, devouring it in a matter of hours, each time I put it down, which wasn't often, I was itching to get back to it, that is the sign of a brilliant read in my opinion. I instantly fell in love with Maisie, she was adorable and, for all her faults and treatment of Katie, I actually felt for Olivia. The girls had suffered quite a bit of trauma in their lives and she just wanted what was best for her little sister, and that is admirable, but my heart went out to Katie who just wanted to be a mum. Will, however was a different kettle of fish, from the start my spidey senses were certain he was a wrong un, he was just too good to be true, whether I was right would no doubt be revealed. I highly recommend this beautifully written story which will tug at your heartstrings and have you reaching for the tissues.

'My Husband's Child' delves into the drama that sometimes comes with mixed families - feelings of love, hate and everything in between. Narrated by the two main FMCs, the story involves Katie, who is a tender footed stepmother, trying her best to integrate with her husband's (Liam's) children. Alternatively, we have Olivia, the eldest daughter who is struggling to find a balance between caring for her younger sister, Maisie and enjoying life as a young adult. Olivia has hated Katie from ever since, blaming her for the dissolution of her nuclear family. As such, there is always tension whenever Maisie stays with Liam...but she never pushes it too far as she's hiding a major secret. Then a tragedy hits that forces them to come together - whether they want to or not.

What I liked - the overall plot of the book was easy to read and follow. The pacing was also nice, with succinct chapters that flowed well, especially as there were two narrators.

What I thought could be done better - I always have an issue when I find all the main characters unlikeable...and I had that issue here! Yes, I know Olivia was only 22 years old in the book, but she behaved more like a bratty teenager in the throes of daily temper tantrums. Katie had no backbone, everything happened TO her, she was this overly meek and passive personality. Same as well for Liam, he needed to be stricter with Olivia's treatment towards his wife and having structure for Maisie. And Will...the worst of them all.

All in all, this was a 3 star read for me. My third novel from Lisa Timoney, I'm looking forward to see what else she brings in the future!

*A great many thanks to Boldwood Books, Lisa Timoney and NetGalley for this ARC. It is important to note that I was not committed to providing a positive review; all opinions are undoubtedly my own.*

My Husband’s Child follows the lives of Olivia, a 22 year old who is caring for her 6 year old sister, Maisie, following the death of their mother; and Katie, their stepmother who wants to have a child so badly, biological or not.

The story uses both women’s POVs to share a tale of how much Katie wants to be in their lives and how much Olivia wants to keep Maisie away…until tragedy strikes that could possibly bring the two together.

The pacing was great, and I really liked the premise. However, the characters were the WORST!

Olivia was childish, bratty, and disrespectful. Sure, she had to grow up quickly to raise Maisie, but she was acted so entitled to Daddy’s money while not letting their father see the younger girl near as much as he wanted. And she fell way too quickly for a man who gives her some attention.

Katie wasn’t much better. I wanted to feel for her own issues…but she also seemed so entitled, to Maisie. It was as if she wanted Maisie to distract her from her own sorrows. Not the right reason to want a child around.

Liam, their father…he really needed to man up. Own the mistakes he made, yes, but also raise his family. Step in as a father and create some parenting arrangements that benefitted everyone. Instead he backed down from Olivia, even though it meant losing time with Maisie.

Don’t even get me started on Will…narcissistic, entitled, manipulative jerk.

The twists and secrets were fairly predictable, all but one - but even that one wasn’t too groundbreaking and the characters glossed over it so it wasn’t a big deal.

I really wanted to like this book, but it just didn’t hit right for me.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for supplying a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

My Husband's Child is an emotional family drama told through multiple points of view, primarily those of Katie and Olivia. This dual perspective allows readers to see both sides of a fractured family relationship and adds depth to the story's central conflicts.

Olivia, Liam's eldest daughter, harbours a deep resentment towards Katie, believing she was responsible for her father's departure from the family and the chain of events that followed, ultimately leading to her mother's death. However, the reality is far more complicated, as Katie and Liam did not begin their relationship until after his marriage had already ended. Despite Olivia's hostility, Katie genuinely cares for both Liam and his younger daughter, Maisie, and even hopes to build a relationship with Olivia.

I found the story started quite slowly, and for a while I wasn't sure whether I would continue reading. I also took an immediate dislike to Will, which made it harder to connect with the early chapters. However, I'm glad I persevered, as around the halfway point the tension begins to build significantly. The pacing improves, the stakes become higher, and the second half of the novel is far more engaging, leading to a satisfying conclusion.

One of the book's strengths is its character development. The characters experience believable growth throughout the story, and the author handles several difficult and emotional subjects with sensitivity and care. While the slow start may not appeal to every reader, those who stick with it will find a compelling family drama that explores grief, blame, forgiveness, and the complexities of relationships.

Overall, My Husband's Child delivers strong character arcs, emotional depth, and a rewarding second half that makes the journey worthwhile.

Thanks to @netgalley @lisatimoneyauthor and @boldwoodbooks for the ARC in return for my honest review.

This book completely pulled me in from the very beginning. What starts as a family drama quickly turns into an emotional, tense, and unsettling story about grief, motherhood, manipulation, and the lengths people will go to protect the ones they love.

Katie broke my heart at times. Her love for Maisie felt so genuine, especially while dealing with the pain of not being able to have children herself. At the same time, Olivia’s fierce determination to care for her little sister was emotional and understandable, even when her actions frustrated me. The tension between the two women felt very real and added so much depth to the story.

And then there’s Will… from the moment he appeared I had a bad feeling about him. Watching the manipulation slowly unfold was honestly chilling because it felt so believable. Lisa Timoney did an incredible job showing how emotional abuse can build gradually and quietly until it takes over everything. I kept wanting to shout at the characters because I could see the red flags so clearly.

The dual POV worked really well and kept me fully invested in both sides of the story. It was one of those books where I constantly told myself “just one more chapter” and suddenly half the night was gone. Emotional, gripping, heartbreaking, and full of family drama, this was such an addictive read.

If you enjoy domestic thrillers with emotional depth, complicated family dynamics, and characters that feel painfully real, definitely pick this one up.

My Husband’s Child is a tender, quietly devastating story about love stretched thin, blended families, and the fierce, complicated ways women fight for the children they adore.

Katie’s love for six‑year‑old Maisie is the warm pulse of the novel — that small hand in hers, the fragile hope of becoming a “proper” family after learning she and Liam can’t have children together. But the shadow of Olivia, Liam’s adult daughter, hangs over everything. Her grief, her resentment, her fierce protectiveness of her little sister create a tension that feels painfully real. Two women, both loving the same child, both convinced they know what’s best.

What begins as a domestic drama slowly deepens into something more emotionally charged. Olivia’s desperation to hold onto Maisie, Katie’s longing to be accepted, and the tragedy that strikes their already fragile world push them into choices that feel both understandable and heartbreaking. The novel handles these shifting loyalties with a gentle, human touch — no villains, just wounded people trying to protect the person they love most.

As their lives twist in unexpected ways, the question becomes not who deserves Maisie, but how far love can bend before it breaks.

A moving, emotionally layered read about motherhood in all its forms — tender, messy, and fiercely protective — and the high cost of holding on when life threatens to pull everything apart.

What happens if daddy dies? Who would I live with?

Katie loves her six-year-old stepdaughter Maisie with all her heart. The time they spend together, the feel of the little girl's hand in her own, means everything to her, especially after she discovers she and her husband Liam, can't have children together. But since Maisie's mum died, she's mostly been living with her sister, Liam's adult daughter, Olivia - and the two have become inseparable. The problem is that Olivia hates her stepmother and refuses to accept them as part of their lives. when tragedy strikes, the two women both want what's best for the girl they love more than life itself, but when their lives take another unexpected turn, they each discover quite how much they'd have to lose.

The pace is steady in this easy to read book. The story is told from Katie, the stepmother and Olivia , Maisie's older sister's perspectives. None of the characters were likeable. This is an emotionally charged story and we et plenty of family drama and secrets.

My Husband's Child is an emotional family drama that explores the complexities of blended families, loyalty, grief and the bonds that tie people together. This story is told through the eyes of Katie and her 22 year old step daughter Olivia. As tensions rise and relationships are tested, both women must confront difficult truths about family, trust and belonging, covering themes of love, loss, failed IVF, coercive control and acceptance.

The narrative moves along at a steady pace, providing a fairly balanced look at both sides of the family dynamic however it is without surprises. Youngest daughter Maisie is a sweetheart and clearly conflicted by her loyalty to Olivia and love for step mum Katie. Sadly I didn't warm to Katie, Olivia or Liam. The story definitely pulls at the heartstrings but for me it is let down by a plot that is too predictable. I did, however, care enough to finish it in just over a day and for that reason have given it 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

This is a good thriller, looking at a family split after the tragic death of the children’s mother through alcohol abuse where the older child takes on the care of her younger sibling.

The book looks at the unusual family dynamic when a step mother is introduced and also at the danger of a relationship built on dangerous coercive behaviour.

This is well written and delivered at a good pace. The tension is built steadily and with clues along the way the reader has some insight into what will happen, but red herrings are thrown in along the way.

The characters are easy to like and dislike as the author intends and the relationship between older daughter Olivia and her partner Will was at the beginning very close but soon the reader sees the dark side of his character and her spiral towards danger.

I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a good thriller.

Olivia is in her twenties but has had her six year old sister Maisie living with her since their mother died, because she can't stand the fact that her father Liam is now married to Katie, even though her stepmother is desperate to bond with them - also because she can't have children with Liam herself.

A tragedy forces Katie and Olivia to face the fact that their concern for Maisie may ultimately be a greater bond than Olivia's deeply-held hostility to Katie...

The story works well as a tearjerker, but it was hard to like the characters. Olivia was bratty and Katie was spineless. Nevertheless, the storyline is packed with family drama, and the dual POV of Katie and Olivia works well, so this gets 3.5 stars.

Twenty two year old Olivia lives with her six year old Sister Maisie after the death of their mum. They have constant support from their dad Liam and his wife Katie who'd love nothing more but to adopt Maisie as she cannot have her own children. But Olivia resents Katie and blames her for her mums decline in health and subsequent death. When she meets Will she feels this is the start of something very special. However when tragedy hits, the whole family suffer in their own ways.
This novel is heartbreaking in all ways, whilst Olivia comes across as being a selfish and disrespectful brat you cannot help but admire her conviction in wanting to keep Maisie with her and feel for her in regards to her relationship with Will.

Fantastic read👌
This book follows Katie, who deeply loves her young stepdaughter Maisie and wants nothing more than to be a real family with her husband Liam. After finding out they can’t have children together, Maisie becomes even more important to her. But things are complicated because Maisie has grown very close to Olivia, Liam’s older daughter, who doesn’t trust Katie or want her taking on a bigger role in Maisie’s life.
As both women try to protect and care for Maisie in their own ways, emotions and tensions keep building. When unexpected events change everything, they’re forced to face difficult choices about love, family, and what truly matters most. It’s an emotional story about grief, relationships, and how far people will go for someone they love.
Thank you to @boldwood books for my advanced copy I thoroughly enjoyed it.

4.5 stars. This book really pulled me in from the very beginning. This is part family drama and part suspense almost thriller. The story is told from a dual point of view of two women. Katie is the second wife of Olivia's father. Olivia is very resistant to letting Katie into her life and wants nothing to do with her. Aside from Liam, Olivia's little sister is the other common interest for the two women. They are in an emotional battle over the little girl.

This story really did grab me. There is manipulation, secrets kept, heartache, some mystery and lots of love. Olivia wasn't that likable of a character, but she was simply way too young to have it all together. She made bad choices that cost them all dearly.

Thanks to Boldwood Books for the digital copy via NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.

Liam and Katie have been married for 5 years. Liam has 2 daughters, Olivia and Maisie. Olivia and Maisie live in their late mother's house, while Liam and Katie are in a small flat. Katie desperately loves both girls and wants to have Maisie in their lives always. Olivia refuses to let Maisie live with her father, hates Katie for breaking up her parent's marriage and is basically calling all of the shots for the family. She is hiding a secret from her dad and feels that Maisie is her responsibility and refuses to let her dad have custody. When Olivia meets a man that she falls for, things start to get dicey. It is an emotional story of grief setting the course. I wish that Liam stood up to Olivia more and didn't put Maisie in the middle. This was a gripping family saga, filled with heartache, jealousy and grief. Olivia’s mother dies and she’s looking after her sister Maisie, her father and step mum lives not far. Olivia hates her stepmother Katie and blames her for her mother’s death. When Olivia meets Will, she thinks she’s got a good one, he’s a lovely guy and doesn’t mind helping look after her younger sister, then everything goes wrong. I really liked this book, but Olivia annoyed me, she’s thinks she knows it all when really she didn’t. She was supposed to be 22, but acted more like a 16 year old. I liked how the chapters flowed and liked reading about how each woman saw each other. A really great read, 5 stars. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for a copy.

A fabulously written story about second chances and heartache. Olivia is a young 17 yr old when she finds out her mum is dead and she has to grow up and take care of her much younger sister. Their dad left the family home years ago and married another woman called Katie who unfortunately found out she couldn’t have children.

Olivia met a lad called Will and fell head over heels in love with him and the feelings were ‘mutual’ he adored her and her little sister. But are things too good to be true? Things are not always what they seem behind closed doors and when the family go away to the caravan park things take a terrifying turn and everyone is in danger.

Will it be too late ????

My Husband’s Child is a slow burn domestic thriller/ family drama. Told from alternating points of view we meet Katie, Liam’s new wife, who is trying to fit in as a new stepmother and Olivia, Liam’s daughter, who has taken over custody of her much younger sister and mourning the death of her mother. I enjoyed getting to know both women, Katie’s IVF journey was heartbreaking and Olivia was wise beyond her years, looking after her sister. The tension between the two was definitely understandable.

Olivia then meets Will and they fall in love and he moves in. Their relationship causes tensions within the family dynamics. Liam then had an accident which helps bring the family together. It then turns out that it was not just an accident and Will has a much more sinister side. Lisa did a great job of with Will- showing him love bombing Olivia to moving on to gaslighting her. It was hard to read at times as you could see all the red flags there. There were a few waits towards the end which I’d guessed. I would have liked a bit more of what Will’s motivations were and perhaps a connection to some of the characters but overall it had a satisfying conclusion.

My Husband's Child by Lisa Timoney is a deeply emotional family drama that masterfully explores the fragile boundaries of motherhood, step-parenting, and family loyalty. Timoney excels at creating flawed, realistic characters and gut-wrenching situations that force readers to question what they would do in the same position. While the bitter, agonizing tension between the two leads can feel heavy at times, the book ultimately delivers a fast-paced, emotional narrative about grief, second chances, and the true meaning of family.

I look forward to reading more books by Lisa Timoney

This story, my Husband's Child, By Lisa Timoney, is marketed as a family drama. While this is true and an accurate description of the story, this novel teeters on the brink of a thriller throughout much of it. The book was a fast read and thoroughly engaging, which is why I gave it a four-star rating, but I think it was a little muddled as to whether it was a family drama or a thriller.

At the beginning of the story, We meet Katie, who is a stepmother to six year old Maisie. Since Katie cannot have children of her own, she is desperate to be a real mother to Maisie. Katies husband, Liam has an adult daughter from his previous marriage, Olivia. Olivia is resentful of Katie, thus a competition or conflict is set up between these two characters. This conflict makes sense in the context of the book, however further conflict ensues when Liam is involved in an accident and his life hangs in the balance. Meanwhile, Olivia meets a man named well who appears to be perfect. He is understanding and kind, at first. As the novel continues the readers come to understand that Will is not exactly what he seems. Will insert himself into the family’s conflicts for his own purposes. How this comes about is what makes this a thriller as well as a family drama. The pace of the book was fast, however I think it was tackling a bit too much and trying to go deeply into the characters emotional statuses along with creating a thriller around it as well.

That being said, this novel was a good and gripping summer read for those readers who like a fast read with some substance. I look forward to seeing what else this author has to offer. Thanks to bold wood books and netgalley for providing me with access to this novel. All of the opinions contained in this review are completely my own.

A fantastic gripping drama that had me in tears at the very end. Amazing storyline and great writing which kept me completely hooked from start to finish. Totally believable characters that connected together really well. My heart went out to little Maisie throughout the entire book and of course stepmum Katie. I love it when you want to scream in frustration at the characters to tell them what you know is happening to them!! A complete lesson in what families will do to keep each other together and choices they need to make. A thrilling, captivating read indeed, cant wait to read more by this author.

Thank you #Netgalley for the advanced copy.

All Katie wants children, when she marries Liam, he came with 2 children who had lost their mother. However, the eldest daughter was not receptive of their stepmother and did everything in her power to maintain to separate households. She thinks she has it all together and when she falls hard and quickly for Will, she was beginning to see her little family form. Meanwhile, Katie and Liam, are constantly trying to help look after the girls and when they finally all agree to go camping, they began to feel like they were making progress. However, things did not go as planned and families begin to question trust...

My Husband's Child by Lisa Timoney always writes an excellent and fast paced novel and this book was no different, once I start to read this book I was hooked and ended up reading it in one sitting especially as I loved the short chapters which made it an addictive read. A beautifully written book from start to finish!
My Husband's child was an emotional tear-jerking family drama so you may need tissues. Hang on, You will need tissues and lots of them!! I really felt for Kate and I just wanted to hug her. She had been through so much and at such an early age.

Big Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC.

Thank you Boldwood Books and NetGalley for an early copy of My Husband’s Child. This was an emotionally packed book, really very good. I really did not like Olivia at all, even at the end when I found out why she acted the way she did, I had trouble liking her. She was definitely manipulated, I had Will’s number from the beginning. I’m glad Katie showed up when she did truly unbelievable but then again it is a book. The ending was the Best part, wrapped up beautifully, soooo happy for all of them.

This is the sort of book young women should read. It was easy to see what Will was up to with his Mr.Perfect routine. I enjoyed the way you could see the dangers coming for the characters and the tension around the secret Olivia was keeping. I just had to keep reading to see what happened and how the story was going to unfold. It was well put together and each characters point of view was credible. The ending was lovely. Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for bringing this book to my attention.
