One thing that propels me to give a book five stars is the depth of feeling it invokes. This book made me feel: triumph and disappointment, joy and sadness, outrage, mercy, and sweet contentment.
The heroine, Loreena, has agoraphobia. I have read many books, and I have never read a book that portrayed agoraphobia more realistically than this one. I cried in empathy and frustration at one particular scene when she was so close to going outside and then couldn’t. When Maverick made her feel safe, my heart melted.
Maverick isn’t without his issues too. He spent the last ten years in prison and has dark times where he feels depressed and overwhelmed by his reintroduction into society.
The way that they complete each other is stunningly beautiful. They are soulmates, and not in a glib-description way. No, they actually fit so well that together they are greater than the sum of their parts.
I loved reading this book. Absolutely loved it, even when it made me cry. It made me feel good as much as it made me cry, and it touched my heart.
