Murder Most Fowl Mysteries #1

Murders in the Marquee

In this witty historical murder mystery set in a San Francisco hotel, an unlikely trio of amateur sleuths must uncover a killer before another guest checks out for good.

In 1905, the Grand Mallard Marquee is well known for its iconic style, as well as its daily duck parade. For Saul Niffler, a reformed jewel thief, working at the luxurious hotel offers a much-needed second chance. Staying out of trouble and in gainful employment is essential. Which makes seeing a body plummet from a penthouse window extra complicated.

Except…did he see it? There’s no body to be found, and Saul knows he should concentrate on his new duties as “Duck Commandant” rather than meddle. If only Kitty Rossi, a persistent young guest yearning to be a Pinkerton detective, would leave well enough alone. Kitty has already roped in Henry, the elevator man, to investigate suspicious goings-on around the hotel. And against his better judgment, Saul feels compelled to join them.

Between the mystery of Saul’s missing predecessor and a grisly discovery in a drain, all signs point to murder most fowl. And with a cold-blooded killer roaming the Marquee’s lavish corridors, keeping his job may be the least of Saul’s problems…

This is a different and quirky story set at the Grand Mallard Marquee Hotel set in San Francisco in the early 1900's. Saul made a mistake and served a prison sentence and estrangement from his wife. Now he is working at the hotel with the resident ducks, parading them through the hotel entertaining guests while getting his life in order. He is drawn into working with a young lady guest and a bellhop who are trying to solve some disappearance of the former duck commandant and other people. I was pulling for the group to find answers while the hotel management were trying to stuff any negative things under the rug. This is an unusual premise with interesting characters, mysteries, and some red herrings. I had some idea of what was going on but the conclusion was well done and satisfying.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review. These are my thoughts.

Murders in the Marquee by Dana Mentink
4 Stars
Thank you to Dana Mentink and thank you Harlequin for providing a gifted copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

This is a fun cozy, historical mystery! It's set in 1905 at a grand hotel in San Francisco with a daily duck parade - its unique and stands out among the crowd. I liked the unique cast of characters, especially Saul as he was starting over after being a former convict. The ducks cracked me up. Nice faith thread.

Saul, Henry and Kitty were a dynamic trio who really bring the story to life. Funny and lighthearted to me - very cozy vibes. Kind of leans like classic mystery too, which was good change of pace compared to other cozies. I read a lot of modern cozy mysteries, so it was cool to have a historical one.

If you enjoy lighthearted historical mysteries with eccentric characters and a very memorable cast of ducks, this might be one to try!

content: no language, clean romance, cozy mystery but few mentions of body parts in the murders

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Delightfully Clever Historical Cozy Mystery

I received digital and audiobook copies of Murders in the Marquee through NetGalley. I was not required to leave a positive review, and all opinions are my own.

Murders in the Marquee was such an enjoyable historical cozy mystery and a five-star read and listen for me!

Set in 1905 at San Francisco’s Grand Mallard Marquee, the story has such a fun and distinctive premise. Between the luxurious hotel, its famous duck parade, a possible body falling from a penthouse window, and a trio of unlikely amateur sleuths, there was plenty to keep me entertained and curious about what would happen next.

I especially enjoyed the combination of Saul, Kitty, and Henry. Their investigation brings plenty of mystery and humor to the story, while Saul’s past as a reformed jewel thief gives the plot an interesting extra layer.

I read approximately the first half of the book digitally and listened to the second half on audiobook, and I enjoyed both formats. The narrator did a wonderful job and made the transition from reading to listening seamless for me.

This was a witty, entertaining historical cozy with an engaging mystery, an unusual setting, and characters I’m looking forward to spending more time with. I’m delighted that this is the beginning of the Murder Most Fowl Mysteries series and will definitely be watching for the next adventure.

A five-star read and listen! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

OVERALL STAR RATING: 4/5
CLEAN RATING: 5/5

Gifted by the author. All opinions are my own.

This was such a cute, quirky, and delightful cozy mystery set in 1905, San Francisco at the luxurious Grand Mallard Marquee. This story had all the classic cozy-mystery ingredients. An intriguing whodunit, an eccentric cast of characters, plenty of humor, and just the right amount of off-the-wall charm. A hotel with a daily duck parade!? Yes, please! Lol

I really enjoyed Saul, Henry, and Kitty. This trio came together to investigate the crime while each trying to find their own second chance. Watching their individual journeys unfold alongside the mystery added a sweet layer of heart to the story.

This book leans into the classic cozy-mystery vibe, with a little bit of Clue and Only Murders in the Building energy thrown in. And somehow, a story involving murder, dead bodies, and dismembered body parts still manages to feel downright sweet. 😂

I had a great time with this one, and the sneak peek at the next book, Missing from Suite Five, has me looking forward to continuing in the series.

Mystery, murder, & mallards! I thoroughly enjoyed this new historical cozy mystery from Dana Mentink! Murders in the Marquee is the first engaging book in the Murder Most Fowl Mysteries series & I’m excited to read the next. Set in 1905 San Francisco at the Grand Mallard Marquee, three charming sleuths, delightful humor, & a clever whodunit kept me turning the pages as I tried to unravel each clue.

My heart went out to Saul Niffler, a reformed jewel thief trying to put his life back together & win his estranged wife back. He’s landed a job as the hotel’s “Duck Commandant,” guiding twelve ducks in the famous duck parade. But before he even starts, he thinks he sees a body fall from a hotel window. When no body turns up, he pretends he didn’t see anything. Unfortunately, Kitty, the daughter of a prominent opera singer, & Henry, the elevator operator, know what he saw & are determined to solve the mystery. As more clues surface & Saul makes a disturbing discovery in his drain, he’s compelled to join them. With danger closing in, these three sleuths must solve the mystery before one of them is accused of murder.

I loved this trio! Saul’s such a softy despite his checkered past, & I enjoyed the way he interacted with the darling ducks. (Uncle Joe was adorable!) I also loved Kitty, who dreams of being a Pinkerton detective while her parents want her to be a demure debutante. It was fun watching her fly from one theory to the next. Henry’s delightful too, an aspiring juggler with secrets of his own. They make such an endearing team, & I found myself laughing at their antics as they searched for clues while trying to evade discovery. I also loved the history & famous hotel guests brilliantly woven in.

The mystery kept me on my toes with one red herring after another & lots of suspects with different motivations. Enjoyed the nail-biting conclusion & seeing if my guesses were correct! Highly recommend to cozy historical mystery fans. I received an advance copy with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.

Murders in the Marquee is one of the best historical mysteries I've read in a long time. It checks all the boxes for me: fast-paced, an intriguing first chapter, an endless list of suspects, a relatable amateur sleuth, and loyal yet quirky sidekicks.

I've been on the fence about the new trend of historical murder mysteries. You'd think I love them but I tend to find them slow in the set up. But Murders in the Marquee proved me wrong! This story starts out with what looks like a body falling from the balcony of a hotel.--except no body was found. Danger on page one! And from start to finish, I loved everything about this novel. The story has one setting - the Grand Mallard Marquee hotel in San Francisco. This gives off Agatha Christie vibes for sure - one location where everyone is "trapped" with the murderer. And anyone could be the culprit. Readers will fall in love with Kitty Rossi, a young woman who wants to make it on her own in an era where that isn't acceptable. And Saul Niffler just wants to untangle himself from his past mistakes. Plus, the ducks might as well be the main character as they steal the show.

This book is one to move up your must read list. If you like mysteries, heartwarming characters, exciting twists and turns, and a "who-dun-it" page turner, look no further than Murders in the Marquee.

Murders in the Marquee by Dana Mentink has a beautiful cover. This is what drew me into read the cozy mystery. However, the mystery was very lackluster, and I couldn't wait to finish the story. The characters were pretty flat with barely any personality. Yes, they wanted to focus on the mystery, but at times, they follow the clues, and only focused on that clue until they solved what it has to do with the mystery, then they moved onto trying to find another clue. The setting was nice. I have heard about the Duck Parade at the Marquee, so it was nice to see an inside look to the workings of a hotel with high-end clients. Overall, Murders in the Marquee did not live up to my feelings of what a murder mystery should be. I needed more action and solving of the mystery.

Murder, mayhem, and mallards!

A fast-paced mystery! The characters were interesting enough and fun in the moment. As a person who would usually find a regular Love Inspired publication to be a little bland, this one definitely piqued my interest better than Love Inspired's usual fair. I would be interested in reading more similar publications that they will have coming out soon.

Also, I am such a fan of little Moonstone! (The cutest little duckling.)

Squeamish level: 2 out of 5

The mystery plot may or may not contain: a severed digit, posthumous dismembered limbs, AND a body falling from a building.

This was a good start for a new series. I loved the setting of turn-of-the-century San Francisco and the luxury hotel, in particular. The characters were quirky and fun, and the ducks were a cute addition. I think where this fell short for me was that it was entirely too long, and it felt repetitious for the sake of drawing it out. Other than that, I enjoyed it and look forward to more in the series.

How I LOVE mystery of old San Francisco type books. This one has a MMC which I’m not used to, and takes place around 1905 which is later than many books I’ve read recently. Neither of these were to the detriment of the novel, and in fact I sincerely enjoyed Saul Niffler as the main character.

Kitty, and Henry are also likable but curious and adventurous characters who completed the crime solving trio.

The constant tension between Saul’s parole, Kitty’s freedom in some areas but not others, and Henry’s wonderful personality but light stomach were fascinating. Three people in such different circumstances who ‘wouldn’t be friends’ but end up each adding much to the partnership.

I knew immediately upon reading ‘Duck parade’ that I would be entranced by the waterfowl, but they ended up being better than my greatest expectations. Their inclusion was so natural to every part of the story, and they played such key roles that I’m honestly very impressed. And Mooney??? Don’t even get me started, my heart.

Overall I was really pleasantly surprised by this story! At times I got a little spooked reading it at night and had to take breaks, but I’m so glad I would start again the next day as the author does a great job with the ending.

Would recommend!

Thank you NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review

“Murder, mayhem, and mallards. Who could conceive of such a thing?”

Only Dana Mentink, on a quest to develop a zany cozy mystery! Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the imaginary Grand Mallard Marquee Hotel in San Francisco is actually patterned to a degree after a famous hotel in another part of the country! I was already prepared to laugh by the ridiculousness of the prestigious 1905 San Francisco hotel’s name. And a duck parade through the lobby twice a day? Complete with a duck commander?

But this is where things get a little hairy. The prominent hotel’s duck commander has disappeared. The hotel manager, desperate to impress one particular guest he believes to be scouting city hotels for a famous literary guest, well, he doesn’t read Saul Niffler’s resume very well. “Shady Saul” as I might refer to him finds himself the bewildered leader of 12 prized ducks, about which he knows nothing.

As Saul acquaints himself with his duties via journals left behind, he is amazed to find himself in partnership with a famous tenor’s young adult daughter, Kitty, and the young elevator man, Henry. “‘You were an eyewitness, Saul.’ The paleness of his face blanched to bone white. ‘An eyewitness to what?’ ‘That’s exactly what Henry and I want to know.’ She skewered him with her hardest detective stare. ‘And I’m not leaving here until you come clean.’” Oy, vey. Kitty wants to be a Pinkerton, not a socialite. Henry dreams of becoming a juggler, performing in shows. Saul, in his 30s, checkered past, just wants to keep his past hidden, his nose clean, and be able to woo his estranged wife back.

This book had me in stitches with the unlikely trio’s escapades, attempts to unmask the visitor who isn’t all he claims, and the wealthy widow who is behaving oddly. Could there actually have been a murder at the hotel, and a cover-up to boot?

Kitty is young, used to getting her own way because of her wealth, and trying out her wings as much as possible. She is a darling, but quite excitable and easily swayed from one theory to the next.

Henry is also young, has a secret, and needs a bit of guidance. Plus, he may be sweet on a forbidden character.

And now, somehow Saul is not only leading the duck parade but this impossible group as they secretly defy given instructions and work hard to prove what none of them saw.

Great twists and use of side characters!
Uncle Joe is one of my fave characters.
If you like historic, twisty cozy mysteries, I highly recommend Murders in the Marquee. I am ready for book 2!

I received a copy of the book from the author and publisher via NetGalley. I also pre-ordered my own ebook. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

‘A woman reasons by telegraph, and a man’s stage-coach reasoning cannot keep pace with hers,’” - Saul’s paraphrase of quote by Dr. Mary Walker

“You did bad things, Saul. We all have. God forgives,” Henry said. “He forgives. You’re gonna mess up and do more bad things still, but only He can tell how you’re being polished up.”

“The chaplain…insisted that God was doing a new thing to Saul’s crusty, battered soul. With ducks? That was a novel way to go about it.”

“Opera singers are like roosters. They each believe there’s only room enough for one in the flock.”

“He heard the voice of the tiny chaplain. God’s doing a new thing in you, Saul. A new thing? It sure felt like he was about to step in a boiling vat of trouble and that was nothing new at all.”

“Choices. That was all she really wanted, to be able to make them for herself.”

A historical mystery set in the Marquee in San Francisco although patterned after the Peabody Hotel with its Duck Brigade.
A few light moments in spite of the dead bodies are in store for Kitty, daughter of a famous opera star, Henry an elevator man and Saul fresh out of jail and tasked with overseeing a dozen mallards.
Saul is sure he saw something drop from a balcony but the trio cannot find a body. They find lots of other puzzling happenings and fishy acting people.
Ms. Mentink sends us on a merry chase with lots of suppositions by Kitty who wants to become a Pinkerton, new Christian Saul who strives not to be just another ex-con and Henry who wants to break into Vaudeville as a juggler. The author kept me guessing right up to the end.
I wonder what these stealthy sleuths will get into next. There is a teaser that another case is in the works for Kitty, Henry and Saul.

This fun, historical mystery is set in 1905 and would be a really good palate cleanser for anything super heavy.

It takes place in a grand hotel in San Francisco - I feel like the cover really fit the vibes of the book. There’s eccentric characters and a daily duck parade - this had me giggling and it was something different from other books I’ve read recently.
I think Saul was my favorite though - having served time in person, he’s trying to redeem himself and the way he parades these ducks through the hotel - I just can’t!

I liked the more historical cozy mystery vibes. It was fitting for the story for sure! There were parts that will have you laughing out loud and then at the next turn, you’re trying to solve the mystery. Overall, well done and I’d definitely recommend if you want more of a quirky, easy read. Thank you NetGalley, Harlequin and Dana Mentink for the early review copy. All opinions are my own but it was the ducks for me!

I think this is what would be classified as a cozy mystery - if not, I would because I found it quite cozy. This is not my normal genre but I am so glad I requested it from NetGalley to ARC read. I was definitely on the edge of my seat with the mystery of the Murders in the Marquee. I definitely was surprised by the big reveal! I enjoyed learning about Saul and his estranged wife, Livvy. My heart hurt so much for him! Miss Kitty was so delightfully curious and kind, and Henry is so honorable and humble. I will definitely be reading the rest of this series to find out what happens to all of them!

This story was quirky and a lot of fun! The mystery kept me guessing and the ducks were a great addition. Saul, Henry and Kitty make a great investigative team and you can’t help root for them to solve the case. The ending was not with out a surprise or two, and was one of the best endings I have read this year. This series promises a lot of enjoyable moments to come!

I loved everything about this cozy mystery steeped in history which initiates the Murder Most Fowl Mysteries series. The cleverly plotted storyline, with its perfect mix of lighthearted and serious scenes, along with a diverse cast of expertly crafted, memorable characters kept me immersed in the story and turning the pages quickly to see what trouble amateur detectives Saul, Henry and Kitty would get into next. The 1905 San Francisco luxury hotel setting, which includes an endearing flock of talented parading ducks, took on a life of its own and kept me smiling. The comradery of the sleuthing team's unlikely friendship is heartwarming. I heartily recommend this book and look forward to the next book in the series!

Murders in the Marquee is a fun, cozy mystery featuring a posh hotel, a fun trio of friends, and adorable ducks! The mystery solving felt a little Scooby Doo-ish at times with the unexpected antics and naivety, but it was ultimately a fun mystery, and I liked Kitty, Henry, and Saul. None of them are perfect, but they’re great together, and there was a good amount of character growth. I’m looking forward to seeing how they continue to grow in book 2!

A cozy mystery set in a hotel in San Francisco during the American Golden Age. Whike on his way into the hotel, Saul believes he has seen something (maybe a body) fall off the balcony of one of the hotel rooms on one of the upper rooms. With the help of a co-worker and a female guest, he works to solve the possible murder (or 2) and other odd happenings. On top of that Saul must do a daily duck parade with dozen adult ducks, no more, no less, and definitely no ducklings. It was a fun read.

I really wanted to like this book. The mystery felt too drawn out. Kind of like if someone spends an hour handing you puzzle pieces one by one, and then suddenly dumped the rest of the pieces on the table at once and gave you 30 seconds to finish the puzzle. I could tell the red herrings were red herrings, and by the time the solution was revealed, I hadn’t guessed it, but I also didn’t really care.

The characters were fine. The side characters were just kind of there, like NPCs in a video game who have only one line and are just there to make it feel like the area has the right amount of people but who don’t add anything to the experience.

I liked Saul and Henry, but didn’t really feel that much more connected to them by the end of the book as I did at the beginning. I wish Saul had been given more thievery/sleight of hand to do. And Henry while part of the trio was never a POV, so he felt particularly flat. I also felt like his crush on Kitty was just thrown in at the end and actually took away from his character.

Then there was Kitty, and hoo boy, buckle up because she is the sole reason this book got 2.5 instead of 3 stars. As the book went on, my frustrations with her only grew until I actively disliked her. Below I’m going to go into spoilery detail into exactly why I disliked her, but if you don’t want anything spoiled, here’s the spoiler free version.

Kitty is like friends I’ve had before where when you confide in them the things you’re struggling with or anxious about, they interrupt you with “Oh, that’s NOTHING!” and then proceed to tell you whatever they’re dealing with. Like, thanks, I didn’t realize that this was a competition but remind me to never tell you anything ever again. She was incredibly whiny throughout the book, despite having an extraordinary amount of privilege for the time. I’m not saying that she can’t have frustrations, but it was the timing of those frustrations plus her telling Saul and Henry how much more privileged they were than her while actively ignoring how difficult their lives were that really, really got under my skin. She came off as a spoiled, selfish child, and I just could not deal with her anymore.

(Side note, she frequently talks about how she wants to be a Pinkerton but can’t because she’s a woman. Um, ma’am, Allan Pinkerton himself employed female Pinkertons all the way back in the 1860s. Maybe it was more difficult to be a female Pinkerton, but how about you stop being so maudlin, and at least try. The female Pinks didn’t sit around feeling sorry for themselves, they went out and sacrificed to make things happen.)

In conclusion: As you can see if you read below, I was pretty much done with Kitty by the end. This idea that all men are always more privileged than all women drives me absolutely up a wall. And quite frankly why I struggle with modern historical fiction.

Kitty has an education and the security of food and shelter. My grandpa who was born 30 years after this book takes place couldn’t say the same thing. He had to drop out of school in 8th grade and get a job so his family could put food on the table. And not some prestigious dream job either, Kitty! Even men don’t get to do whatever they want. This attitude also ignores God’s blessings. And considering that God and faith is actually discussed in this book, made Kitty’s attitude even more obnoxious. God gave Kitty many gifts, and she isn’t grateful for any of them.

HERE THERE BE SPOILERS (not for the solution of the mystery, though, just for situations the characters find themselves in near the end of the book):

These are the notes I took regarding my grievances against Kitty

-“At that moment, it dawned on him that despite his incarceration he’d likely had more freedom in his life than the well-bred young woman before him.”

Nope. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I’m sorry, Ms. Mentink, but no. No.

Let’s recap; before this sentence, Kitty’s complaints were having to spend hours embroidering a pillowcase, pretending to be interested when people discuss their causes and politics, and wearing a corset. And you compare this to PRISON?! Or the knife’s edge that Saul exists on currently while on parole?

I’ve been trying to ignore Kitty’s whining up to this point, but it’s getting to be too much.

(Also if your corset is uncomfortable it’s because it’s fitted improperly or it’s not been broken in, similar to new shoes.)

-Saul fears he is about to lose the job he desperately needs to keep so he can be reunited with his wife and put his criminal past behind him.

Henry is facing being framed for the murder of a man who was his sole friend in a world he feels incredibly isolated from due to, among other things, being illiterate.

These dire situations having just been discussed, Kitty breaks down crying, saying that her parents are leaving on a world cruise and she must go with them because, as a woman, they can’t leave her to live in a hotel on her own, though they would if she were a boy. Then Kitty says this,

“You men have no idea your own privilege.” 🙄

Girl, you will be gone for six months. In that time, you get to see the world, make new friends, stick your nose into any mysteries you want on the ship, etc. Meanwhile, Saul might lose his wife and struggle to find a job due to his criminal past, and Henry might be in prison, or worse! Because as a reminder, this is 1905 and the death penalty is still very much on the table. But no, you cry your tears because you can’t stay in your fancy hotel and live your no responsibilities, follow your detective whims cushy life.

-“Alone to wander the decks of a cruise ship, sipping cups of tepid tea with people her parents insisted she meet, and devouring newspapers to catch whiffs of mysteries that she could neither investigate nor solve. It made her want to outright sob.”

Oh, no, Kitty! Not tepid tea!! Say it ain’t so!!!

At least you can READ the newspapers! At least you’ll be seeing the world instead of the inside of a prison cell! At least you’ll still have your whole life ahead of you to play detective. Meanwhile, a lot of men of the time were dying of black lung from working in the mines. They didn’t get to just do whatever they wanted either!

You silly, stupid, selfish girl!!! I can’t stand you! 😡

-I really thought there’d be a moment when Kitty learned that Henry couldn’t read, and she’d reevaluate her idea of him being better off than her just because he’s a man, but nope. Never happened. Somehow Kitty not getting to do whatever she wants in life is seen as being worse off than being illiterate!!

Thank you Harlequin for the gifted eARC!

This was such a fun mystery! I love a good whodunnit, and this absolutely scratched the itch. While I guessed parts of the reveal, the full solution eluded me and was so satisfying to read. Saul, Kitty, and Henry are also a fantastic trio, and I hope to learn more about their backstories and see their unlikely friendship evolve in future installments. Definitely pick this up if you’re a fan of historical mysteries or if you’re just looking for a fun read to change things up a bit!

Let your amateur detective skills work with the amateur sleuths in this book to see if all of you can solve this murder mystery. Even though there were murders in the storyline, it was lighthearted and fun. I am never disappointed with Dana Mentinks books and I recommend this one. It is scheduled to be released September 1, 2026.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by Netgalley and the publisher. All words are my own.

Consigliato!

Saul Niffler is hired at the Grand Mallard Marquee Hotel as a bellhop, but since his “resume” mentions that he used to run a farm, he becomes the new duck commandant. Saul, however, has a problem: he’s just been released from prison for theft, and he doesn’t want anyone to know, but he also wants to find a steady job to prove he’s a reformed thief; on top of that, when he arrives at the hotel, he sees a body fall from the balcony of one of the rooms. At first, he flees, because he has a criminal record and doesn’t want to get involved, but then he changes his mind; when he returns to the spot where the body should be, there’s nothing there: just his imagination?
Upon entering the hotel, the staff coordinator takes him to the ducks and to his room on the roof; once he’s alone, he’s joined by Henry, the elevator attendant, and Kitty, daughter of the famous tenor Rossi and a guest at the hotel. Kitty, partly out of boredom and partly because she aspires to become a detective, has convinced Henry to investigate the strange events that have occurred at the hotel. The first: the death of Mrs. Potter’s husband in a strange accident; second, following that death, Mrs. Potter, once a socialite, became a recluse; and finally, the disappearance of Mr. Lee, the duck commandant whom Saul is replacing.
Oh, I almost forgot about the ducks: at the Grand Mallard Marquee Hotel, every day 12 ducks parade through the hotel. They start from their roost (on the roof), are taken down to the ground floor by elevator, and march all the way to the pond, led by their commandant.
And so this trio investigates these strange events: did something really happen, or did boredom and loneliness bring them together?
From what I can tell, this book is sort of an introduction, and a very successful one at that. I liked all the characters: Saul, Henry, and Kitty. Each of them has strengths and weaknesses. It’s especially nice when Kitty and Saul discuss women’s rights; the book is set in the early 1900s. The supporting characters are great, too. The story is great, and the mystery behind it, even if a doubt arises at one point, is still always gripping as you work through the case alongside the characters.
Highly recommended!

Thank you to Harlequin Audio, NetGalley, and the author, Dana Mentink, for this advance audio copy.

Ahh, so very exciting news… this was my first audiobook!

Excited reaction GIF

With that being said, it was definitely a learning curve! I had no idea how challenging it would feel for me to pay attention without a book in front of me, or how fun it would be to listen to a narrator do voices for every character. But all in all, I really enjoyed the experience!

Alright, let’s get down to business.

𝒮𝓊𝓂𝓂𝒶𝓇𝓎

It’s 1905 in San Francisco. Saul Niffler, a reformed jewel thief in desperate need of a second chance, is starting his first day at the Grand Mallard Marquee, a very luxurious hotel. Unfortunately, seeing a body plummet from the penthouse window was not on his “first day” bingo card.

Only he questions the validity of what he just saw. Was it just his anxiety playing tricks on him? There’s no body to be found. No shouts of terror. Saul pushes it from his mind and focuses on his new duties as “Duck Commandant” when in comes Kitty Rossi.

Kitty is a persistent young guest yearning to be a Pinkerton detective, keen on solving the murder case! She knows Saul saw what he tries to pretend he didn’t see, which is exasperating to say the least. She’s even roped in Henry, the elevator man, to her escapades! Against his better judgement, Saul is convinced to join in.

But the closer they get to solving the mystery, the more confused they become as all signs point to a murder most fowl (my GOODNESS, I love a pun). Keeping his job might be the least of Saul’s worries with a cold-blooded killer roaming the Marquee.

This is the first in Dana Mentink’s Murder Most Fowl series.

𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝐻𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓈

What a well-written story!! My goodness, the twists! The turns! I loved how it kept me guessing at every point. I couldn’t put my headphones down! And I can’t put my finger on why exactly, but the setting felt so glamorous. Maybe it was how I envisioned the era, or the elegance described of the Grand Marquee hotel, or even the guests who inhabited the rooms (Kitty’s father is an opera singer after all).

Kimberly M. Wetherell was the narrator for Murders in the Marquee, and, my goodness, I LOVED her character voices. Everyone was so distinct, but Henry might be my favorite! She really captured his youth and joyful spirit so well.

I love the duckies! Ahh, like, I know cleaning up after them must be positively atrocious, but they’re so cute!! [spoiler alert, if you’re a softie like me when it comes to animals, ] They added such depth to Saul’s character, and I really loved how their presence was weaved effortlessly into the story. I absolutely support Uncle Joe’s chaos.

The ducks and interactions between our trio (Saul, Kitty, and Henry) added such a playful element to an otherwise dark story. Never have I ever heard of a “duck parade,” but this is how I envisioned it:

Duck parade GIF

This book, despite the murder, felt so warm and cozy, not to mention quirky! The trio couldn’t have been more different, and yet they meshed so well together, bringing out the best in each other. Henry’s levity kept the story light in tough moments, and meanwhile Saul tried to bring logic to Kitty’s ambitious dreams. The perfect historical murder mystery!

𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝐿𝑜𝓌𝓈

I’m genuinely so sad to leave this cozy era of ducks and fancy hotels! I had a lot of fun getting immersed in this book. And now I have to wait until Fall 2027 for Book 2 in the Murder Most Fowl series, Missing from Suite Five. 😭

𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝒜𝓊𝒹𝒾𝑒𝓃𝒸𝑒

Perfect for fans of Only Murders in the Building.

I’m not a big grisly murder type of reader, and this book definitely had its grisly moments, but nothing happened in real-time, which helped me feel 100% comfortable while reading it, if that makes any sense at all.

I've never read a mystery that takes place in a hotel before and this one is fascinating! I immediately liked Saul and when we meet Kitty, I got the wrong impression of her. Thought for sure she was more of a bored guest more interested in gossip than solving any mysteries and I was delightfully proven wrong. Saul, Kitty and Henry are TRULY my heroes in this story and Mentink writes them brilliantly!

And because of this book I'll probably never look at ducks the same way again! Clever, loyal and precious creatures for sure!

Saul is convinced he sees a body drop to the ground in front of him on his FIRST DAY at this new job at the hotel, poor guy. Trouble is, the body disappears and no body, no crime. Saul is a former criminal newly in the faith, desperate to get his life together and win his wife back after getting out of jail. He was really hoping for a calm and simple job as a bellhop. Unfortunately, he picked the wrong hotel for that to work out, but because of his jail record he's eager for a job and the hotel hired him without question.

Then he meets Kitty, a guest at the hotel, who corners him hoping for answers, and Henry, another hotel employee who will help Saul with his duties. And the men are not allowed to socialize with Kitty since she is a guest and she with them. Mentink brilliantly takes that situation alone with this trio and establishes a story where they each become significant to the plot as well as a tight unit of friends. They each risk their jobs and obvious threats around the hotel to BOTH protect the ducks AND find out what dastardly deeds are going on in this hotel where the manager ONLY cares about the reputation and success of the hotel, not so much the safety of its employees. And wow, this Marquee has MANY secrets going on at once!

TRULY loved how much Henry loves Mr. Lee. For a man who is missing and presumed dead most of the story, Mentink brings his character to life through Henry's memory of the gentleman commandante of the ducks. And what Kitty risks to get answers AND help Henry get on stage, utterly remarkable and touching.

Was only uncomfortable with the severed body part the trio finds and something else the male duck leads them to. For a cozy mystery, that was kind of graphic.

There's also a cat in the story that I ended up hating, took my heart a LONG time to calm down after Caddy (think that's the name) attempts to harm a baby duck...RESPECT for the trio and especially Henry for saving the day.

One of my FAVORITE scenes in the story is when Henry finally gets his chance on stage and calamity ensues...SO WELL WRITTEN! All I cared about was the safety of the ducks and the trio did all they could to protect them. And yes, there are a few famous names in this story that actually existed in history...again, Mentink is so clever including them in the plot!

Hotels have mostly been used in scary movies, but Marquee isn't like that at all. We have three characters who help one another, work together to find out what happened to Mr. Lee, protect these ducks, protect each other, and do all that is possible to support one another while figuring out why people are disappearing from the hotel in mysterious ways. Am beyond grateful that no ducks were harmed in the plot, even the troublemaking cat is placed in protective custody after attempting to run away...Mr. Lee would've been proud how it all turned out.

If you are z true crime buff this is the book for you. NYT best seller Dana Mentink keeps the reader in suspense until the end. She drops clues throughout, but are they correct or incorrect regarding the homicides happening at the Grand Mallard Marquee Hotel in San Francisco in 1905.

The three amatuer slueths are 18 year old Kitty Rossi daughter of Opera Singer Vigor Rossi, who longs to be a Pinkerton Detective and detests that she doesn't have the freedom of men as there are only so many positions available for a lady in 1905.

Henry Gallagher, the elevator operator and helper of the Duck Commandant who longs to learn to read. He doesn't want people to know he can't read. He longs to be on the stage in a Vaudeville act as a juggler.

Saul Niffler, the new Duck Commandant after Mr. Lee, the former Commandant suddenly disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Saula is a reformed jewel thief who is currently separated from his wife, the daughter of a retired prominent judge who doesn't approve of Saul since he was arrested and sent to jail for stealing jewels. While in prison he meets the tiny chaplain who helps him become a Born Again Christian.

Kitty enlists Henry and Saul's help to solve the mysterious disappearances of prominent guests. Henry is happy to help Kitty, but Saul is reluctant as he is on probation and must stay out of trouble and gainfully employed. Saul longs to prove o Livvy, his estranged wife, that he is a reformed man.

Saul was hired as a Bellhop, but having lived on a farm, Mr. Clauson, the hotel manager, has hired him to be the new Duck Commandant and part-time Bellhop.

When Saul first arrives he believes he saw a body fall off the fifth floor balcony. Howeven, he's not sure he really did. That begins the mysteries at the Grand Mallard Marquee Hotel in San Francisco. Together the rio must solve three homicides while staying out of trouble and maintaining his employment. Kitty is the leader having read many detective books and has the desire to become a Pinkerton Detective. Henry glady helps Kitty and Saul try to solve the homicides.

**Warning-There is mention of the dismemberment of a homicide victim. including the tool used for the dismemberment. It is not really graphic, but if that will bother you, please note it is mentioned a few times in the book.** Again, this is a great book for true crime buffs.

The suspects are:
1. Mr. Kilink, a former parole officer from Chicago now working at the Marquee.
2. Oscar Barnaby, the gazebo builder who is very agile and lithe.
3. Mrs. Potter, a recent widow whose husband was the victim of a hit and run.
4. Cora, who is Mrs. Potter's niece who detests her aunt by marriage.
5. Mr. Clauson, the hotel manager, who will do anything to protect the reputation of the hotel.
6. The maids.

Where are the bodies? Will they be found and who is/are the guilty people? What happens when there is an attempted kidnapping on Kitty Rossi with a threat on her life? Will she survive and who tries to kidnap her? What are they afraid of? Who tries to frame Henry? Will Livvy ver forgive Saul and reunite with him?

I received this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not promised anything and nothing was insinuated in exchange for my honest review.

MURDERS IN THE MARQUEE by Dana Mentink is the incredible story of Saul Niffler, Kitty Rossi, and Henry Gallagher at the Grand Mallard Marquee Hotel, well known for its daily duck parade, in 1905. When faced with mystery, murder and intrigue, this unlikely trio team up to find answers of whodunit and why.

Saul spent time in jail for stealing, which cost him his wife. Now out, he’s determined to prove to her he’s changed. First up was finding a job. Having applied for a bellhop job, he’s surprised to find he’s now in charge of the famous Marquee ducks. With his prison history unknown, he can’t afford to turn it down. And with free board and meals, it will give him more money to send to Livvy.

Kitty, the daughter of Vigor Rossi, famous opera tenor, has lacked for nothing in material goods. The one thing she longs for seems out of reach – freedom. Women are expected to marry to benefit the family, not love, and then do only the socially accepted things. Kitty has higher goals - like being a Pinkerton detective. When mysteries start stacking up at the Marquee, she feels this is her chance to hone her skills.

Henry’s main job at the Marquee is running the elevator. He secretly has a key accessing the elevator to the roof. Mr. Lee, the previous person responsible for the ducks, was a friend mystifying Henry that he left without telling him. Henry dreams of performing on stage. Being a jovial young man, he easily made friends with Kitty and Saul. He does worry his secret will come out.

With Mr. Lee’s mysterious departure, believing they saw a body thrown off the sixth floor balcony and then it disappearing, and a grisly discovery in a drain, all adds up to them thinking a murderer is walking among them. Can they come up with enough clues to report their findings to the police? Or will searching and nosing around just make them the prime object for the next “disappearance”? When Saul finds out that Judge Walter Wescott, his father-in-law, is coming to the Marquee, will it mean losing his job with the discover of his past? Is it possible that Henry might actually get his chance to perform? Will Kitty’s father talking of a cruise take her away from their investigation before they find the answers they’re hunting for? When Henry is arrested, will they be able to prove him innocent?

MURDERS IN THE MARQUEE is an exceptional historical cozy mystery that you will feel compelled to read in one sitting. Dana Mentink gives us a story of friendship, seeing life in the early 1900’s, murder, intrigue, mystery, danger, mayhem and second chances. MURDERS IN THE MARQUEE is positively a FIVE STAR book that I highly recommend to everyone!

I received an ARC of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own.
