The Deep End

Rate this book
In this debut novel, J.M. Kearns probes the attachments that can either tear us apart or make us whole—attachments to nightmarish day jobs, to family members who don’t always understand us, to childhood places that we can’t return to—and to the lover right in front of us that we resist truly knowing.

Dave Moore, 41, is doing just great at all the things he never wanted to do, like living in L.A. and slaving at a giant law firm while his creative dream nears its expiration date. That’s when he falls hard for co-worker Maggie Taylor, a witty goddess with a psyche as uncertain as his own.
Perhaps foolishly, he takes her to the beloved summer lake of his Canadian youth, where he hopes to summon the mythic past. But Maggie has other things on her mind—such as the present. Beset by chamberpots and uptight relatives, will she refuse to join him in his quest?
Love has a way of raising the stakes. As the story returns to L.A., issues mount for Dave with his day job and his ailing father, while Maggie’s life also goes into crisis mode. They must decide on their future. Will he rise to the occasion? Will she?

This brilliant, darkly comic story starts off breezy and romantic, but goes to deeper and ultimately more luminous places.

Dave Moore (41, PhD, attorney, narrator) works for Sarronick & Beatty (SOB) in LA. He meets Maggie Taylor (co-worker) & the 2 seem to get romantically involved.
Murray Barr is the boss, Cynthia is a supervisor, Zeke Weiss (60+) is a litigation assistant, & Larry Shrift (paralegal coordinator), Richard Ocher work there also.

The EPA reports & the legal issue is a company Philander has been contaminating Pilon & Palsy sites water supply with toxic material since 1963. It was rumored by Charteroff if could have started in 1943.

Will Maggie & Dave fall in love?
How will the legal issue be resolved?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written romantic book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make great suspenseful romance movie, or mini TV series. I’m not really sure I grasped this whole story so I am going to rate it at 4/5 stars.
