Rate this book
FEATURES OF THIS BOOK:
* Timeline of historical events leading up to the Plymouth settlement.
* Chapter questions for study, discussion, and reflection.
* Maps and illustrations unique to this book.
* Obscure historical references clarified within the text as part of the story.
* The list of Mayflower passengers grouped into families.
* Archaic language paraphrased into a clear first-person account.
* True to Bradford's original content, convictions, and chronology.

This fresh retelling of the Pilgrim's true story concludes with their first full year in the New World, thereby encompassing all the events that fascinate us most: from their persecutions in England, to their dangerous ocean voyage, their first encounters with Native Americans, their struggle against sickness and starvation, culminating with their now famous celebration that we call the "First Thanksgiving."

In this book you will find neither patriotic hero-worship, nor politically correct revisionism. This is the true story of Governor William Bradford, with all his faith, fears, and frailties, but retold in modern language so readers may hear his story the way he might tell it today over a hot cup of tea at your kitchen table.

A Plymouth Pilgrim took me back to my childhood when I first learned about William Bradford and the Mayflower, except this time I had a greater appreciation of the sacrifice this community endured for the sake of religious freedom. Perfect for homeschool curriculum or school libraries, Donald W. White turns a historical treasure into an enjoyable and easier read.

My family spent our summers in Plymouth, MA. I grew up around Mayflower II, Plymouth Rock, the monument of Massasoit, the museums, and Plymouth Plantation. The story of the Pilgrims, therefore, is part of my history. Many years ago I read Governor Bradford's journals. The old English made it a difficult read.

Donald White has done us a great service. He has achieved exactly what he set out to do: tell Governor Bradford's eyewitness story, the Pilgrim's story, as clearly as possible, being faithful to his voice, spirit, and content. I highly recommend reading this firsthand account in order to learn the truth of the Pilgrims--their faith, their good relationship with Massasoit and Squanto--and that first Thanksgiving feast celebrated with Massasoit and 90 members of his tribe.
