Hieman kaksijakoinen fiilis jäi tästä kirjasta. Bändin nokkamieheltä oli luonnollisesti kuoleman vuoksi vaikea saada tuoreita kommentteja joten tämän vuoksi oli Laihon osuudet saksittu sieltä täältä eri medioista vuosien varrelta ja liitetty suurinpiirtein sopivaan kohtaan kirjaa. Valitettavan usein nämä jäivät irrallisiksi muusta tekstistä joten parempi ratkaisu olisi ollut editoida nämä pois kokonaan. Syytä myös huomioida, että Laiholta ehti tulla oma kirjansa "Kitara, kaaos & kontrolli" johon halukkaat voivat tarkemmin paneutua.
Tämän lisäksi kirja sisältää satoja kommentteja jossa jonkun toisen kiertuebändin jäsen kehuu miten mukavia ja jalat-maassa olevia tyyppejä Bodomin tyypit ovat ja välillä samoja kehuja suolletaan toiseen suuntaan. Summa summarum: suurin osa hevimuusikoista ovat ihan tavallisia, mukavia ihmisiä.
25 -vuotisen uran takaa luulisi sisältöä löytyvän ihan tarpeeksi ilman mainittuja täytteitä. Esimerkiksi olisi voinut tarkemmin kertoa nykyisten jäsenten ajatuksia eri kappaleista ja levyistä, eli itse taiteesta. Ja samalla leikata n. 100- sivua turhaa höttöä pois niin käsissä olisi ollut ainakin neljän, ellei jopa viiden tähden julkaisu.
Nykymuodossaan voi lähinnä kysyä onko kirjalla ollut editoijaa lainkaan vai onko tässä suoraan annettu toimittajalle vapaat kädet täyttää sivut haluamallaan tavalla. Ehkä se on se yleinen ajatus eri artisteista kertovien kirjojen suhteen. Fanit ja aiheesta kiinnostuneet lukevat kirjan joka tapauksessa.

Erinomainen selostus tunnetun speed-metal yhtyeen historiasta.
Teksti koostuu eri henkilöiden haastatteluista mutta on kuitenkin sujuvaa proosaa.

Kirja sopii ehdottomasti Bodom faneille ja metallimusiikista (ja sen historiasta) kiinnostuneille. En lähtisi suosittelemaan yli 500 sivuista teosta ihan kenelle tahansa, ketä aihe ei kiinnosta alkuunkaan.
Kirja oli koottu eri haastatteluista vuosien varrelta. Lopussa varsinkin asetelma toinen sanoi toista ja toinen toista, hieman häiritsi, tai näin ei voi kukaan ulkopuolinen tietää, mitä siellä bändin sisällä on oikeasti tapahtunut.
Kirja oli ahmittava ja kiinnostava. Jätkät ovat pitäneet hauskaa mutta toki kolikon kääntöpuolena oli Aleksin alkoholismi. Kirja on kuitenkin koottu Aleksin työtä ja elämää kunnioittaen, eikä hänen kuolemallaan mässäilty ollenkaan.

Laaja muistelmateos yhdestä Suomen suurimmista bändeistä, jonka matka päättyi valitettavasti muutamia vuosia sitten. Haastattelupohjana on kaikki bändissä soittaneet muusikot sekä hätkähdyttävän laaja kattaus kansainvälisen metallimusiikin ykkösketjun nimiä. Kirjan pohjasävy on surullinen. Bändi nousee levy levyltä ja kiertue kiertueelta suuremmaksi. Loppua kohden kuitenkin edesmenneen supertähti Alexi Laihon elämänhallinta alkaa pettämään, alakulo kasvaa ja korkki aukeaa yhä aikaisemmin aamuisin, ja sitä kautta koko bändin alamäki jyrkkenee kulisseissa. Hyvä kirja erinomaisesta bändistä ja vahva suositus musiikki-ihmisille.

Mainio kirja merkittävän suomalaisen yhtyeen tarinasta. Teksti on helppolukuista ja antaa vaikutelman siitä, että lukija olisi ikään kuin kärpäsenä katossa kuuntelemassa, kun yhtyeen jäsenet ja muut matkassa mukana olleet yhdessä muistelevat menneitä.
Kirjassa kerrotaan ehkä jopa uuvuttavan paljon juhlimistarinoita, mutta toisaalta tällaiset asiat taisivat olla vahva osa yhtyeen elämää. Kirjan loppupuolella on vaikea välttyä suurista surun tunteista lukiessa siitä, miten kaikki päättyi.
Kaiken kaikkiaan mielenkiintoinen teos, joka tarjosi jo todella paljon Children of Bodomia kuluttaneelle lukijalle hieman uutta knoppitietoakin.
Suosittelen kirjaa erityisesti yhtyeen faneille ja suomalaisen metallimusiikin historiasta kiinnostuneille.

Timo Isoaho's biography of Finnish metal legends Children of Bodom is a book that wears its heart on its studded leather sleeve. From the moment you pick it up, the quality is evident: the hardback binding and beautiful cover design immediately signal that this is a lovingly crafted tribute to one of extreme metal's most beloved bands. There's even a practical touch—the book stays open when placed on a table, making it perfect for reference while spinning your favorite CoB records.
The book's greatest strength lies in its interview-based structure. Rather than filtering everything through a single narrative voice, Isoaho lets the band members and associates speak for themselves. This approach brings the story to life in a way that straight biography rarely achieves. You can hear each person's voice in your head as you read, and the varying perspectives paint a picture of the band's journey. It's particularly effective for capturing the different experiences and viewpoints that existed within the group throughout their career.
Music nerds will especially appreciate the detailed discussion of individual songs, complete with references to the tracks that influenced them. This sends you down delightful rabbit holes, comparing the original inspirations to Children of Bodom's interpretations and transformations. It's the kind of detail that deepens your appreciation for the band's craft.
The book is also genuinely funny. The band members come across as refreshingly down-to-earth, and their stories often had me laughing out loud in recognition. A personal favorite: the anecdote about a photo shoot with guitar legends Steve Vai and Zakk Wylde, who arrived immaculately dressed with a cool car, while Alexi Laiho showed up in rumpled clothes carrying a shopping bag. So Finnish! These moments of human relatability make the band feel like people you'd actually want to grab a beer with—though perhaps just one beer, given the book's other recurring theme.
And that's where some of the weaknesses emerge. While the excessive partying and drinking stories are entertaining at first, they become repetitive. There are only so many variations on "and then we got completely wasted" before the pattern grows tiresome, even if it was central to the band's lifestyle and mythology.
The book also suffers from an unavoidable challenge: Alexi Laiho, the band's creative force and frontman, passed away before this project began. His perspective comes only from archived interviews, and at crucial moments in the story, you desperately want to hear his side of things more fully. This is particularly acute in the book's final sections, where tensions and disagreements within the band mounted. The interview format, so effective elsewhere, feels insufficient here. A few pages of traditional narrative synthesis could have better explored the growing rift between Alexi's vision and his bandmates' perspectives—a fascinating conflict that deserved deeper examination.
Similarly, Alexi's death receives surprisingly little space. Given his importance to the story and the shock his passing sent through the metal community, more detail about how events unfolded would have been both appropriate and welcomed.
The book includes some nice photographs in its middle section, though more visual documentation would have enhanced the package. Still, what's there is well-chosen and adds to the experience.

It is written and compiled in such a way that it progresses almost comment by comment, each topic in the book is followed by a few sentences of commentary from different people involved.
I think this was an excellent way to create a band memoir, as it brought out much more character in how each person experienced and remembered the events.
The band spent a lot of time on the road, so there are plenty of stories about their tours. These stories are often wild and alcohol-fueled. It’s said that the band had a huge alcohol rider at some festivals, and according to the stories, the guys certainly didn’t turn down a drink. CoB was an incredible band and rightfully toured alongside other big names. It was fascinating to hear how metal giants like Slayer, Trivium, Lamb of God, and Mastodon fondly remembered Children of Bodom, and there was no shortage of praise for the band’s musicianship.
Speaking of alcohol, it ultimately became Alexi’s own reaper. The heavy partying and drinking, of course, had its dark side: it can lead to a disease called alcoholism. However, I think the book still honors Alexi’s memory, even though it openly talks about his behavior under the influence of alcohol.
And speaking of Alexi, I think everyone can recognize him as the primus motor of Children of Bodom, the main songwriter and a musical prodigy who worked his ass off to get where he was. The book includes a section for each Children of Bodom album, covering the composing process and studio work. It was really interesting to read about CoB’s time in the studio, and especially about Alexi’s unique way of composing and writing the band’s songs.

Tämän kirjan toteutuksessa oli jo lähtökohtaisesti yksi merkittävä haaste, joka itseäni ennakkoon suuresti epäilytti: yksi "tarinan" päähenkilöistä on joukosta poissa eikä pääse antamaan omaa vastinettaan tapahtumien kulkuun. Alexin aiemmin julkaistusta kirjasta sekä erilaisista uran aikana tehdyistä haastatteluista poimitut sitaatit istuivat lopulta yllättävän hyvin (vaikkakaan eivät aina täydellisesti) kokonaisuuteen luoden sen illuusion, että hänkin pääsi sanansa sanomaan. Vaikka ihmissuhteet bändin jäsenten välillä kipinöivätkin kuten lähes kaikissa rehellisissä bändihistoriikeissa, ei kirja tuntunut turhanpäiväiseltä loanheitolta ja kerrotut ns. paljastuksetkin olivat varsin harmittomia.
Kaikenkaikkiaan onnistunut ja helppolukuinen tilkkutäkki, joka paikoin nauratti ääneen, paikoin eli luonnollisesti loppua kohden suretti. Alexin kohtalo omien elämänvalintojensa seurauksena tuntuu vielä tänäkin päivänä niin kovin turhalta ja tarpeettomalta. Livenä bändi oli joka kerta heidät nähdessäni - ja näitä kertoja muuten riitti - todella kovassa iskussa eikä yksikään keikka jättänyt toteutuksen ja tunnelman puolesta negatiivista fiilistä (ei edes jäähyväiskiertueen Oulun-keikka, pohjattomasta haikeudestaan huolimatta). COB oli loppuun asti parasta ja on edelleen.
Kun vielä asiaan eli itse kirjaan palataan...

A must have for all Children of Bodom fans. This book covers the band's story, from their humble beginnings, success, front-man Alexi Laiho's struggles with alcohol to their break-up and Laiho's sudden death. The author tells their tale using various interviews with the band members and those who worked with them. Because it was written after Alexi's death, his answers are extracts from his biography 'Chaos, Control & Guitar' by Petri Silas and old interviews.
Although their demise was tragic, some of the earlier stories that made me laugh. I particularly enjoyed the weird and wonderful anecdotes from their tours.

Haastattelumaiseen rakenteeseen oli aluksi vaikea tottua, mutta kyllä se siitä sitten lähti. Kuvauksen mukaisesti Isoaho kertoo raadollisesti Bodomin huikeasta noususta ja valitettavasta mutta vääjäämättömästä tuhosta. Useassa kappaleessa on asiaa, joka on täysin irrallista ja turhaa kokonaisuuden kannalta. Siksi 4* eikä 5*

Aika pirun vaikuttava katsaus Children of Bodomin tarinaan. Uskomatonta omistautumista, menestystä ja lopulta sitä alakuloista alamäkeä, missä pitkään yhtä pitäneiden välit alkavat rakoilla kun alkoholismi alkaa päästä parinkin kohdalla ihan tosissaan voitolle. Helposti luettavaa, hyvin kirjoitettua tekstiä jossa Laihokin saa osansa vanhojen haastattelujen kautta. Hieno teos.

One of the best books I have read in a long time about the band. It’s about their music and it’s told from the band members themselves in interviews. Very well written and it just does to show you they are one of the best metal bands to ever exist. Rip Alexi, you are a legend

Avaa Alexi Laihon elämäkerrasta poisjääneitä asioita ja erityisesti muiden bändin jäsenten kokemuksia sekä tarkentaa levyjen äänittämistä ja kiertuekokemuksia niin hyvässä kuin pahassa.

I loved the format of this biography and I loved finding out various behind the scenes information about my favorite band. It was hilarious, informative, and near the end: very sad. COBHC forever. 🤘
