Tonio Kröger en andere verhalen
Thomas Manna korte proza vormt een hoogtepunt binnen zijn oeuvre. In deze verhalen wordt de wereld bekeken met de ogen van een buitenstaander. Zo staat in het titelverhaal Tonio Kröger (1903) het lot van de kunstenaar centraal, de onmogelijkheid om door te dringen in 'het werkelijke leven'. Deze novelle, die Thomas Mann mein Eigenstes noemde, wordt algemeen beschouwd als de belangrijkste uit zijn vroege werk. De novelle Mario en de Magiër (1930) schreef hij na een vakantie in Italië waar hij het opkomende fascisme belichaamd ziet in de met een zweep gewapende massa hypnotiseur Corolla.

Thomas Mann was a German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, essayist, and Nobel Prize laureate in 1929, known for his series of highly symbolic and ironic epic novels and novellas, noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual.
