Indomitable: Medal of Honor Stories from the Pacific War at Sea

Rate this book
Steel against storm. Sailors against the odds. Valor beyond measure.

The Pacific War at sea was unlike any conflict in naval history—a vast theater of carrier battles, submarine ambushes, night raids, and desperate surface engagements spread across thousands of miles. In Indomitable , the eighth installment of the Medal of Honor series, we honor the men whose courage on the open ocean, in torpedo alleys, and amid typhoon winds defied the enemy and redefined bravery.

These are stories from the edge of destroyer captains charging enemy cruisers, submarine commanders launching bold ambushes in treacherous waters, and sailors manning broken guns as decks burned beneath them. Through their actions—whether atop a flaming flight deck or in the pressure-cooked silence of a submarine—they earned the United States' highest military honor.

More than just personal heroism, Indomitable charts the evolution of naval warfare in the shift from battleship dominance to carrier-led tactics, the rise of PT boats and destroyer swarms, and the submarine campaign that brought the Japanese war machine to its knees. It examines defining engagements—from the nightmarish Java Sea to the audacious charge at Samar—and the technological ingenuity that turned the tide.

With immersive detail and reverent storytelling, Indomitable captures what it meant to fight and sacrifice at sea. These men didn’t just hold the line—they became the steel in its spine.

Informative and Well-Researched
Indomitable: Medal of Honor Stories from the Pacific War at Sea by Jason Edwards is informative and well-researched. I appreciated the compelling stories and vivid portrayal of heroism. The author does a great job of breathing life into each Medal of Honor story.

However, the book is so meticulous that it is often dry. At times, it reads like a doctoral dissertation. The author spends the first half of the book detailing historical context. This first half is really not necessary.

None-the-less, the last half of the book is outstanding. Here the author shines. You will appreciate the compelling storytelling and vivid portrayal of heroism. The stories are full of courage. Many will bring a tear to your eye.

Overall, I recommend this book, especially to military buffs. You will appreciate learning about the bravery displayed by those who earned the Medal of Honor.
