"An Electrifying Series Kickoff That Hooks You Instantly"

What an exciting start to the series. This first instalment is packed with drama, tension, and so much promise for what’s still to come. For a shorter opening book, it delivers plenty—and the spicy moments are exceptionally well written.

I loved the relationship dynamics throughout. Brina and her best friend Angie were compelling right from the start. However when things turned physical, the outcome wasn’t quite what Brina hoped for, adding a great emotional layer to the story.

Then we have Brina and Fayenne—and the chemistry between these two is absolutely electric. Their dynamic is palpable, sharp, and simmering with potential. The scene we get from them in this book is HOT, and I’m seriously shipping them. The enemies-to-lovers tension is everything, and I truly hope we see that develop further in the future instalments.

Thank you, Scarlet, for the opportunity to read and review your first book. I’m excited to see what comes next for Brina and where you take this series in the future.

An excellent addition to the world of Manacles of Ice and Blood (the author's first book). The cliffhanger! I can't wait to find out how Brina's story connects into the other characters (I have my theories).

This prequel novella really opens the world, the magic, and the lore. I think it's a great introduction to the author for readers who haven't read of Hoarfrost and Blood, or who have and want to continue the exploration of the world.

The way the author wrote the spice and how it was depicted on the page was consistent with the writing style of other authors/scenes I've read. So all that to say, it was well written. Both scenes felt well paced, like not too drawn out or too brief. As a reader you understand Brina a lot in both interactions, it's a time where her internal dialogue is surprisingly vulnerable with the reader while externally to the character she's very in control and commanding.

Thank you to the author for an ARC copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Of Rifts and Promises is a novella set in the world of the Manacles of Ice and Blood series by Scarlet Tempest.
It is an engaging adventure for the siren Brina, the heir of clan Brinneagh. Beginning with the search for a murderer and ending with a stint in the metaphysical realm of Indecision, a lot is going on.
Brina is a strong warrior and rising leader. We are privy to her vulnerable side as well.
As another reviewer stated, this book plays out like the pilot episode of a new series. It grabbed my attention with interesting family and friend dynamics, the murder mystery, and the best friend relationship. Though the page count is low, I was easily invested in the outcome. I am disappointed that it is a cliffhanger, but I am excited to continue the series. It would certainly be a challenge to wrap up all the strings in a novella.
It is well written and easy to follow, with a layered main character and an intriguing plot. The steamy scenes are quite spicy, and also significant plot points.
I recommend this exciting fantasy novella if you are okay with a cliffhanger.

Brina is the badass, emotionally complex heir to the siren Clan Brinneagh. She’s been trained to fight since she was young and holds the entirety of her clans future on her shoulders. When she discovers three sirens from her clan dead with their venom sacs removed, she’s then sent on a mission to meet with the mysterious High Mistress, to interview her about the murders.

As a reader, this novella immediately sucked me in. The first chapter from Fayenne’s POV created intrigue. I found myself wanting to know more about mystery that was being set up, as well as the unique magic system surrounding Fayenne’s magic.

I also think that the plot around which the story revolves is a great vessel for exploring characters and their relationships to each other. I’m impressed by the level of complexity and nuance Scarlet was able to reach in just a few short pages. Brina and Angie’s relationship is angsty and nothing short of devastating, and on another level, Brina and Fayenne’s short encounter is thrilling, dangerous and exceptionally steamy.

On another note, after having read Of Hoarfrost and Blood, I was eager to learn more about the world that the character from OHAB live in and this novella DELIVERED.

I can’t wait for the next book in the Manacles of Ice and Blood series!

Shape shifting Sirens! The world building is great even with this coming in under 100 pages. This well written sapphic romantasy novella is related to the Author's Manacles of Ice and Blood Series.

Definitely a series (and author) to watch. Sapphic with spice and some D/S action.
We'll see Brina again in the author's upcoming release Of Soulbound Sacrifice slated for first quarter of 2026. Let me tell you... I can't wait!!!

💜🌊🧜🏼‍♀️Of Rifts & Promises ARC Review 💜🌊🧜🏼‍♀️

The heir of her siren clan, Brina, is on a mission involving 3 missing members. When she's sent to interrogate a Sorceress, things heat up in every way. She's left to decide if her life as she knows it is worth dealing with devils.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌶️🌶️

🫵🏼 OFAP is for you if you enjoy:
• short (~90 pages), dark, and spicy fantasy romance novellas
• prequel origin type stories
• mlm romances 👭
• "villain" origin stories
• interconnected standalones
• romantic relationships that aren't always easy, breezy but are more raw, real, and messy at times
• characters that make you think and/or look at things from a new/different angle/lens
• somewhat open ended endings (not everything tied up nearly in a bow) that leave you primed for the first full book in the series
• talking during 🌶️ scenes (good girl, for example)
• or, if you've been considering jumping into this genre but don't want to immediately commit to a long series

📖 I need to read book 1 right now because I'm invested in this story and these characters. The details surrounding the missing Sirens were so interesting to me, especially combined with what occurs with the Sorceress (Fayenne) in the prologue (compounded with Fayenne's reveal towards the end).

There are multiple adventures (or maybe mini-adventures is more accurate) in this - it's like a longer teaser or pilot of the next show you now want to binge watch.

Like c'mon Scarlet, you've thoroughly whet my whistle and I need more asap. 😂

I tend to not the biggest fan of novellas (in general), as I often find by the time I care about the characters, it's over. Scarlet had me caring about these characters early on, so I'm happy to say that wasn't an issue for me.

It does end on a cliffhanger and I believe book 1 of Manacles of Ice and Blood releases sometime this winter (February, maybe).

✍🏼 Clearly and accessibly written with vivid, imaginative descriptions. We get some fun banter, too. If you're a fan of talking during spicy scenes, I think you'll enjoy this. Scarlet has a knack for writing in a way that's approachable without being banal.

⏳Being so short, the pace is pretty fast (without feeling rushed). It serves as an excellent appetizer of things to come in the Manacles of Ice and Blood series.

🗺️ It's kind of wild to me how well the world is fleshed out considering the short length. If you've read Of Hoarfrost and Blood (highly recommend, great book), then this book expands that world. If not, you get enough info to feel grounded and immersed.

👥 Characters you can root and a MC who has more layers than an onion. The emotional depth and nuance is what I love most about Scarlet's characters. They're vulnerable and heartbreakingly real. Plus, Scarlet always gives us diverse and inclusive characters that feel organic (ie, not forced).

💖 Their origin story, or meet cute (but less cute and more tense and violent), has me hungering for me.

🌶️ The D/S dynamic isn't overt (as in no one said 'I'll be dominant/submissive'), but more organic. I like that, especially in this setting because anything more would've taken valuable time away from other important things. And it just wasn't necessary in this novella. Brina dominates at giving, that's probably all I needed to say. 😈

The spice was well written, timed, and serves a purpose.

📚 If you liked: Of Hoarfrost and Blood (Scarlet Tempest), The Ever Seas series (LJ Andrews), Unworthy (J.A. Vodvarka), or Avalon Tower (C.N. Crawford), then I think you'd enjoy this.

Of Rifts & Promises pulled me in from the very first page and never let go. Scarlet Tempest weaves a story that feels both intimate and epic, balancing raw emotion with a richly imagined world. This is the kind of book that quietly seeps into your heart before you even realize how deeply invested you are.

The characters are the true soul of this story. They’re flawed, layered, and painfully human, even within the fantasy elements. Every choice they make carries weight, and the promises—spoken and unspoken—feel heavy with consequence. I found myself emotionally attached, rooting for them, hurting with them, and holding my breath during the moments when everything felt like it could shatter.

The world-building is beautifully done without overwhelming the reader. The rifts add an intriguing sense of tension and mystery, serving as more than just a fantasy device—they mirror the emotional divides between characters in a way that feels intentional and powerful. Scarlet Tempest’s writing is poetic yet accessible, with moments that linger long after you’ve turned the page.

What really stood out to me was the emotional depth. This isn’t just a fantasy story; it’s about trust, sacrifice, and the fragile hope that promises can still be kept even when everything is falling apart. There were scenes that genuinely made me pause and reflect, which is something I always appreciate in a book.

If you love character-driven fantasy with emotional stakes, lyrical writing, and a story that stays with you, Of Rifts & Promises is absolutely worth the read. I’ll definitely be thinking about this one for a long time—and eagerly waiting to see what Scarlet Tempest gives us next.

I feel like I just watched a pilot ep for a show with all the things I like in it—now I want the full season!

I was impressed by how many separate little adventures there were time for in this sub-hundred page siren book. Murder mystery! Family tensions! An ill-fated hookup with a long-time crush (the resolution here gave me some genuine emotions) AND an ill-advised hookup with a sexy-dangerous stranger! Then somehow there was still room for a whirl-wind ordeal in a metaphysical somewhere and a tee-up for things yet to come.

It's hard to do that much as fast as this bite-sized book does it, so not every adventure was paced evenly, and I think the bits that suffered the most from the condensed page-count slipped into feeling a little YA—which isn't a problem per se, but the tonal offset between what I'd consider the Big Climactic Perilous Moment in the action-adventure sense and some of the (very fun, enjoyably on-the-edge, Differently climactic) sexytimes was a little distracting.

Won't stop me from picking up next installments! I've fully pack-bonded with Brina at this point and am for sure invested in learning more about Fayenne—and boy do I love when a romance is a lil fucked up! The prose here is also immanently readable in a way I appreciate, casual without lacking peronality, from some effortlessly lovely lines like, “Her scales flashed a brilliant gold in the sun as she dove back into the water,” to my personal fav mic-drop chapter end: “Time to find some corpses.”

I received an advance reader copy for free; all sentiment in this review is my own.

I have mixed thoughts about Of Rifts and Promises.

Initially, I was completely hooked. I love a mermaid/siren story, and Scarlet’s Sirens seem fierce and multifaceted. Brina, our main protagonist, is the chief’s daughter and has been trained her whole life as a warrior.

She is sent on a mission to find some missing Sirens – and what she finds is horrific. This starts the beginning of a quest for information involving a seductive sorceress and an age-old family feud.

Ultimately, within the constraints of 85 pages, Scarlet weaves a pretty elaborate world of magic and war.

I found the spice scenes to be a bit forced. The chemistry between Brina and her first encounter wasn’t believable, and her chemistry with the second was somewhat believable but very rushed. I’d have appreciated a several month hostage situation, rather than a 20 minute “interrogation.”

Now, this is probably personal preference and the scene was likely written this way to show Brina’s impulsiveness and quick thinking.

Fayenne was an interesting and layered character. I’d like to have unlocked more of her background – which I’m assuming is coming in the next installment of the Manacles of Ice and Blood series. I think she may have been my favorite piece of the story — a puzzle, with whom Brina was entranced.

Good characters, great worldbuilding, slightly rushed story slim on details. Again, this was probably intentional as this is really a supplemental teaser piece to a larger book.

⭐⭐⭐

Thank you Scarlet Tempest for the eARC!

I raced to sign up to ARC this short and I was so fortunate to be given an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

Scarlet Tempest’s debut novel Of Hoarfrost and Blood was my favourite book of the whole year last year, I read it twice last year and have re read it again this year. So when I saw that they were releasing a short I was super excited!

Of Rifts and Promises did not disappoint!

I really enjoyed getting to experience Tempest’s world building again and getting to see a whole different part to the wider world than we did in OHAB, the shadow realm in particular I found so fascinating and I really hope that we get to revisit in future books in the series because I am dying to know more about it.

This was a great introduction to Brina’s character and I am so excited to see where she goes next in Of Soulbound Sacrifice. Whilst we only got a brief time with Brina and her immediate world I can already tell she is going to be a character that I love. I also really hope we get more of Fayenne in the future, the dynamic between the two was great, I have to give a mention to the creative use of a tail in here as well!

I’m so intrigued to delve deeper into the secrets and politics of the siren clan, Of Rifts and Promises has me so excited for what OSS will bring. It is the perfect appetiser.

Tempest did a fantastic job with the short and I cannot wait to see what they release next, hopefully I won’t have to wait too long.

This novella was such a fast and engrossing read! There is not one dull moment; the 80 pages are absolutely packed. It's part of an overarching, complex plot set in a single world, with one book already out and another to come, following different characters. But the novella works on its own, introducing a world and culture of sirens and their complex interaction with the people of the land, and the character of Brina, daughter of the chief siren and likely next leader of her clan.

The story shows Brina as a fierce, open, passionate, and rather lonely character, committed to serving her clan but also knowing that to those she loves most, she's expendable. There are two intensely spicy scenes, but to me they were most interesting in showing how Brina is attempting to connect and find the relationship that she needs, and making all the wrong choices in it. And it's all connected through a vicious multiple murder of innocent sirens that Brina must solve, during which she is thrown to the mercy of a possibly malevolent spiritual being, who shows her a glimpse of the world's pain and a land girl she has never met, and forces her to see herself and her own agency differently.

The ending comes just too quickly, and I am looking forward to learning much, much more about this world and these characters in future books. I look forward to re-reading this when the next book in the series comes out!

I loved Scarlet's debut novel, "Of Hoarfrost and Blood", so I was stoked to see she already released another story set in the same universe. Although this one is a novella and has a different tone (spicy!) than OHAB, it fits perfectly into the world Scarlet is creating.

This novella introduces two new, complex characters, both of whom I enjoyed and am eager to see more of. (I believe both are set to appear as main characters in future novels.) Brina is the protagonist, a strong female Siren warrior with a bit of an impetuous streak. Fayenne is the antagonist, a fiery Sorceress with surprising depth and a mysterious backstory. I loved the multilayered aspects of both, as well as the sparks (spicy sparks!) that fly between them when they finally meet.

Without revealing any spoilers, I also loved the introduction near the very end of the novella of a new aspect to the in-world universe. I can't wait to see how this changes things in future novels.

My only complaint is that there isn't more, and now I have to wait until Scarlet drops the next main book in the series (which I hear is not that far off, at least!). Needless to say, I'll be the first in line to see what happens next!

4.5 stars rounded up - I received this as an ARC for free. All opinions are my own.

Of Rifts and Promises was a fascinating introduction to two characters: Brina - The primary character POV that we get through story, and Fayenne - an antagonist, at least for this installment.

While Fayenne is complicated and interesting, we don't get quite enough of her involvement for me to form a full opinion. Brina however was extremely fun to read and I love her! My heart broke for her in the early chapters. She's just doing the best she can with the cards that have been dealt for her in this story.

The open door scenes were fun, and I appreciated the negotiation scene leading up to one of them. I do feel like the scenes set up our characters mindsets and worked well within the story, though the 2nd scene was a little out of place.

What I especially loved however, is that this isn't just a story about Brina's love-life. It's setting up a larger darker world that I cannot wait to dig into. Those final scenes with Brina got me fully invested in the world.

Definitely think it's worth a read :)

Of Rifts and Promises is an exciting stand alone spicy sapphic romantasy novella set in the world of Manacles of Ice and Blood. Our main character is siren Brina heir to Clan Brinneagh. Her father sends her on a search and rescue mission to find three missing sirens, however she soon realizes it is more of a search than a rescue. She is accompanied by her best friend Eyvangeline (Angie) who she also has more than friendly feelings for. After this mission is completed her grandma then sends her on an assignment to get to the bottom of the sirens being murdered. She must meet with a ruthless and enchanting sorceress high priestess named Fayenne. But wait, there’s more. After her meeting with Fayenne she also ends up traveling to a different realm. There is so much happening in this short novella but it all flows so seamlessly. The characters and story are well developed and the spicy scenes were believable and added to the story and development of the characters. This novella had me hooked. I can’t wait for the coming novel, Of Soulbound Sacrifice to read more of Brina’s story.

True rating: 3.75 stars rounded up

As an early reader, I appreciated getting a first look at this story. While it didn’t fully hit the mark for me, there were several elements I genuinely enjoyed. I would like to thank Scarlet Tempest for the opportunity to read “Of Rifts and Promises”, available now! Below is my honest review.

The story is told through two points of view. It opens with Fayenne, the sorceress, who sets the stage before our Siren, Brina, takes over. From there, the narrative follows Brina as she discovers that members of her clan have been killed. Her grandmother, one of the clan’s elders, sends her to uncover the truth and to seek out a sorceress named Fayenne. Once Brina arrives at Fayenne’s residence, things start to heat up—in more ways than one 🔥🌶️. To find out what happens next, grab your copy of “Of Rifts and Promises” today.

While I enjoyed the plot of this story and found Tempest’s writing style relaxing and easy to read, the pacing felt a bit choppy at times. It tended to jump from one moment to the next, almost like quick cut-scenes in a movie. I would have liked the chapters to flow together a bit more smoothly (water pun intended 😁). I know it’s a novella and meant to be a shorter read, but I wouldn’t have minded a slightly longer length if it meant the transitions had a little more room to unfold. That was really the only thing that kept this story from hitting 100% for me. If it had been just a couple of choppy chapters, I don’t think it would’ve stood out as much, but it felt consistent throughout. Even so, the story is still very enjoyable and absolutely worth a read!

If you’re in the mood for a fantasy novella that is short, spicy, and includes a sapphic romance between a siren and a sorceress, give “Of Rifts and Promises” a try!

I received this book as an ARC and read it in one sitting!

Having read Scarlet's debut, I was curious to see what aspects of the world would be developed next. I did enjoy Brina as a main character, though she was VERY different than Demerise, the young FMC from Scarlet's first book. Brina is a warrior through and through, so if you enjoy a strong female character (in the battle and the bedroom), Brina is the girl for you.

Of Rifts and Promise is described as dark spicy fantasy, and I would definitely agree with this. There was a good mix in my opinion of spice and epic world building, and I am definitely excited to see where the story goes next, since the book ends on not quite a cliffhanger, but it definitely seems to set up some things that will take place in the next book.

If you need sapphic sirens in your life, read this book now!

Of Rifts and Promises is a quietly powerful exploration of the spaces between what breaks us and what redeems us. Wrapped in a super sexy package.

The cast is the emotional to the core. The protagonists are deeply human (even if they are Sirens): flawed, sometimes reactive, sometimes tentative. Their emotional arcs are believable rather than melodramatic which is impressive for 84 pages. The writing is evocative without being overwrought. The prose leans lyrical in moments, but mostly stays grounded in lived emotion, giving the reader space to breathe and reflect.

At its heart, Of Rifts and Promises meditates on the nature of brokenness and gives such promise on the labor of redemption. I cant wait to read the next feature with these characters.

Of Rifts And Promises is a sapphic romantasy novella, at only 80 pages in length. We follow the perspective of Brina, a siren tasked with a mission to figure out what ans who has been harming her community, and that's when she meets the powerful sorceress, Feyenne. The two are at each other's throats, but it doesnt take long for either of them to be intrigued by the other - and you'll like how it plays out. Im a sucker for a good enemies to lovers, and even though the change is quick, its worth it once you see an insight into their posts and learn their secrets. There are two spicy scenes, and even I was getting butterflies while reading them. If you want a quick, spicy lil romance with a kick, I'd recommend picking this one up when it releases next week.

A prequel to Of Hoarfrost and Blood that ties into the second book perfectly!

Brina is our strong siren that is trained to be the best by her father. But despite her strong front, she yearns for affection. Sent to locate three missing sirens she discovers something dark that will send her on a journey to uncover the truth, discovering more about herself along the way.

Scarlet does an amazing job setting up the world that will tie into the second book in this novella. Introducing us to flawed brave characters that will have you leave you wanting more!

Absolutely recommend Of Hoarfrost and Blood to appreciate this morsel of a story!

Scarlets world building is fantastic as you would expect having read OHAB. This is a departure from their past work with a more mature and adult theme (yes I mean sex) which they handle expertly across this short. The characters are engaging and leave you wanting to know more, especially with complex interpersonal dynamics.

In short if you want romantasy with a solid fantasy story and spice, look no further than Of Rifts and Promises.

A simple search for missing sirens takes several unexpected turns, leading Brina Brinneagh to discover more about herself and her family. For such a short narrative, ORP contains surprising depth. Brina is forced to speedrun several traumatic events followed by something that swallows all of them combined.

It also does a wonderful job of building up and leaving you needing to know what happens for Brina. Not only is this absolutely worth the read, but I'm already sold on the next book.

This novella is a prequel, which I was not aware of. Brina is a siren who gets 90% of the POV. I liked how strong and emotional she is. I also liked the side character and the emotional scenes, but it had a slight cliff hanger, which again I wasn’t expecting from the blurb.

I did think it was a plot hole that Brina dreams the prologue (she’s a warrior, not a prophet) and then proceeds to be confused over who would harvest siren organs when she literally saw the auburn haired women in her dream hold them? Sis u KNOW who did it. It was in chapter zero!! Overall, it’s very vibey.

Short but compelling. It makes you want to dive deeper (no pun intended) in to Brina’s life and continue her journey.
I got an unexpected kick right in the feels early on. It was written so compellingly even though I haven’t experienced that exact thing I could really feel how it deepened the characters.
Nice spice ;) , and though the set up did feel a bit rushed I understand it’s very limiting for an author when they only have a short time to develop things so it didn’t bother me at all.
Can’t wait to read the first novel now!

I got this story as a e-arc from the author, wow what a emotional ride...
the descriptions and how the book is wrote is amazing, and the real world emotions shared and written was refreshing. to many authors write like Noone has actual feelings or emotions when something happens to them.
I will say I felt it was very rushed, everything happened in 1 day which I dont know how that would work.
I do love , love LOVE that the author used actual words for the spicy scenes, no wet folds here. I can not wait for book 2

I enjoyed this book greatly! I enjoyed that the author made the main character different from what other authors do. It made her more relatable because she was not the typical heroine character. I as well enjoyed the use of same sex fun versus the usually straight people stuff. I always enjoy that Scarlet always has more story to tell. Her use of magical and mythical creatures is pretty spot on.

A novella full of mystery, intrigue, and spice. I loved my first look into the Manacles of Ice and Blood world. The siren Brina has set out on a quest to uncover those that murdered members of her clan. She couldn't have planned for the sparks that would fly upon meeting the sorceress Fayenne. I imagine their chemistry will build and become more impactful as the series progresses. They feel destined to cross paths as the family feud reignites.

Thank you to the author for the ARC via Bookfunnel. I did not realize this novella was set in a pre-existing universe from Tempest’s debut. In all honesty, I think the world building here would have been easier (for me personally) to follow had I read that book first. Regardless, it was still a lot of fun! There’s a lot of twisty intrigue and dynamic characters to enjoy in this quick read.
