The next book in the series! The Last Paladin (Book #10):
While the last scraps of those cultists skulk off to hide and cause trouble, I’m not sitting still. I’m rebuilding my strength, training allies, and punishing enemies—just another day for a Paladin of Darkness.
Lately the Empire’s turned into the eye of the storm, and the noise has drawn our eastern neighbor’s interest. Some came for profit; others brought “help.” How many of those Houses are really as friendly as they claim?
One of my big time favourite series is now at book 9. Opened it on release and couldn't put down until the end- maybe not as full of cool twists and quips as books 7-8, but still excellent and extending both the universe (the East, newer and more powerful enemies), history of the intertwining 700 years (Argus!), and character list as well as action on all planes (Marcus, but Roe and her "zoo" who get a tank(!) as present for a well done job, as well as Amelia who was on the way to be married in shackles and by force until Marcus came to "object"). A few more quotes from favorite Beeky hunting cultists (preparing to blow up a shopping mall full of people just to make Marcus look bad in the press) as well as from Marcus stunning Lexa for once...
"I walked openly to the edge of the platform and rubbed my hands together. “Looking for me, gentlemen?” I called loudly, drawing their attention. As I spoke, the silhouette of a black bird began to take shape above my head. The deaf idiots didn’t hear me. Insulting, honestly, and they called themselves professionals. Ruined a perfectly good entrance.
“Her-r-retics?” Beeky’s cry thundered far louder than my voice, echoing across the rooftop.
Now the terrorist gathering finally paused. A second later, Beeky was shot out of the air by a sniper round. Good reaction. Excellent aim. At least they weren’t completely useless. Beeky dropped like a stone, only to slip out of the line of fire and reappear behind the sniper as a black shadow. His hooked beak punched through the man’s head with a crunch, tearing it free from his shoulders.
Beeky rose into the air, clutching the prize in his talons and laughing merrily as he began to sing: One shot fired, now you’re dead! Up and fight, you little head! With that cry, Beeky yanked energy from me.
At first, I thought he was using it to shield himself from the dozens of shots now tearing into him. Nope. The feathered lunatic instantly converted the energy into the Element of Death. The head in his talons lit from within with an acidic green glow. Its dead eyes snapped open, its jaws began clicking rapidly and nastily, like a wound-up toy, and Beeky hurled the death-charged head at the nearest enemy."
"I stayed silent and stepped forward. Then I reached out and gently brushed a stray pale lock from her forehead, stopping directly in front of her. Lexa’s breathing quickened, but she didn’t move. She simply stood there, waiting. Nothing happened. “Something you wanted to tell me?” she asked, maintaining a perfectly composed expression. “Maybe… invite me to accompany you to the wedding?” Her eyes gleamed mischievously. “Why not?” I said. Then, without changing my tone, I added, “Assuming you don’t mind attending alongside the Paladin of Darkness.” LEXA’S REACTION WAS… amusing. First, she was delighted I’d agreed to go to the wedding with her. Then she got offended that she hadn’t been the first to learn about my Paladin status. Finally, the weight of what I’d said truly sank in, and that fleeting offense gave way to genuine gratitude.
In the space of thirty seconds, the poor girl cycled through three completely different emotions. I found it funny. Lexa, on the other hand, found it frightening and beat a hasty retreat. The powerful, self-assured, all-knowing wielder of the Astral Element wasn’t used to being vulnerable. She wasn’t used to not knowing things. Instead, Lexa was used to surprising people, shocking them, staying one step ahead, and looking down on them. She didn’t even consider her Astral “sisters” her equals, constantly competing with them.
I received a review copy of this book. The Last Paladin book 9 shows us some insights into Marcus, and the paladins, though the hints are few and far between. It also shows us more of his capabilities, but I'm nobody is going to be surprised by any of that. The ending is interesting, though there's no way to know what it actually means until the next book shows up for reading. Well done. Looking forward to the next one already.
Who knew that the most important thing in this story is who Marcus really is. But the fun of trying to make the world a better place for all is going slowly. He is on vacation. But really it must be a working one. Can't wait for the next book..
I fell in love with this book series and also love a good mystery behind a stories world building. Which is why so many answers to certain questions are almost reveiled, like what happened 700 years ago. Plus, yah got to love an mc flexing on the villains.
After feeling lukewarm about the last couple books of the series, I very much enjoyed this latest installment. Had a lot of much needed main plot advancement that’s been kind of slow to develop.
Another amazing cliffhanger. I hate and love the author for it. Honestly I should just wait for the rest to come out then binge read the whole series again.
