“101 Things To Do Before You’re Downloaded” is a 2025 anthology of short fiction by Scott Edelman. Mr. Edelman may be known from his current podcast, Eating the Fantastic, in which he interviews members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy community. The stories in this volume seem to have been originally published from 2016-2023 in other magazines and anthologies.
The titular story involves a protagonist who seeks isolation, at a time when most of the rest of humanity is transcending to a digital state. He makes a discovery regarding the popular list of things they are seeking to do before letting go of their physical forms. Other stories include time-travelers who are seeking to avoid a terrible future; a woman who goes with aliens to see other worlds then returns to what should be a better Earth; and a pair or robots who may be the last beings. If anything is a theme for this anthology, I would say it might be dystopias and post apocalyptic stories.
As with any collection one may like some stories, while others do not suit one’s tastes. That’s fine of course, and the nature of anthologies. I think the stories here are well written, and many will leave you thinking about them for some time after reading them. That’s always a good thing.
