Daughter of the Wolf Queen

Rate this book
Kidnapped by an alpha in the dark of night, a village girl is shocked to find herself a hostage of the king. But when her survival demands she pretend to be the alpha's true mate, the ruse begins to feel all too real . . .

For as long as she can remember, Evie has lived in a forest cottage under the close eye of the vicious guardian she calls Mam — long ago the portrait artist for the royal family.

When the alpha of the Wolf Guard arrives with a message from the king, requesting Mam paint the prince's new bride, the sight of Evie surprises and alarms him. That night, he and his lieutenants kidnap both her and her wicked guardian. As Evie fights to be freed, the alpha's words dismay her: "I don't think you know who you really are."

As Evie discovers her true identity, she finds herself liberated from Mam's ruthless control — yet caught in the web of royal struggles for power. Only one plan can keep her safe: to pretend she is the alpha's true mate. Truth be told, it's a task she finds entirely too easy.

But is the increasingly passionate connection between them really nothing more than a ruse? Is the alpha only using her to end the curse placed on the wolves by the exiled queen — and will she become a liability to him once they are free?

Above all, can she at last break free of the fear that has caged her, and claim the life that was once her destiny?

A steamy adult fantasy romance with fated mates, forbidden romance, long-awaited reunions, and elements of fairy tales retold.

A Captivating “You Belong Somewhere Else” Fantasy. I read this book over 2 days from a ARC copy and I was so pleased I got the opportunity to read this!

Daughter of the Wolf Queen swept me up right from the start with its intriguing premise: what if all your struggles in life were because you never truly belonged where you were—because you were meant for a castle, a crown, and a destiny far greater than you imagined? I loved following Evie on that journey. She’s a strong, relatable protagonist who’s both vulnerable and determined, and I found myself rooting for her the whole way.

The world-building is rich and imaginative. The idea of wolves and humans living alongside each other added unique texture to the story, and the political and magical elements kept me curious. There were moments that genuinely surprised me, and I enjoyed trying to piece together what was really going on as the plot unfolded.

Julian was another highlight—protective and loving without feeling one-note, and carrying just the right edge of unpredictability to keep their dynamic exciting. His connection with Evie was a great balance of warmth, danger, and tension.

If anything, I wish the book had been a little longer. The ending wrapped things up quickly, and I would have loved more time with these characters, especially given how compelling the world and relationships are.

Overall, an immersive and exciting fantasy with a heroine worth cheering for and a romance that kept me invested. I’m looking forward to seeing if we get more from this world!

Rating: 2.5 ⭐️ rounded up
Spice: 🌶️.5

This book was an interesting and unique concept on wolf shifters that unfortunately fell flat in execution for me. This is a great example of a story that suffered from single POV, and it led me to not connect with the MMC much or be able to discern his true motives. I feel like the story was missing the juicy details that make it delicious. Seeing the MCs fall in love. Watching the FMC grow into her destiny and earn her birthright. It was just a bit too impersonal and surface level, and left me wanting more. Possible spoilers below.

This story follows Evie, an isolated orphan in a poor village living with her adoptive grandmother. She is taken by the Wolf Guard alpha, Julian, to the castle and informed that she is not who she believed she was. Political enemies start to close in, and Evie and Julian decide to fake a “true mate” connection together to offer her protection (and he gets some benefits from it as well). She could be the key to ending a curse on his people, shifters, and as her feelings become blurred, she’s forced to navigate her entire life being upended, political intrigue she’s never faced before, and confusing feelings for Julian, all while being unsure who she can trust.

Without Julian’s POV, we never really know what he’s thinking or what his motives are. He’s sweet and gentle with Evie, and seemingly honest, but like Evie we’re left to just simply trust what he’s telling her, all the while recognizing that he could be manipulating her for his own gains. I personally feel the book would have been much more dynamic and developed if we had insight into Julian’s thoughts and feelings, but if this was done intentionally to make us question things like Evie, then it is well done. It’s just not my favorite way to tell a romantasy, because I didn’t connect with Julian like I wanted to. Up until the very end I was questioning if he would betray her, if he felt the way he said he did, etc. He did keep her at arm’s length and didn’t give much away, and therefore we’re left questioning his intentions right along with the FMC.

Evie was an alright FMC, sweet, naive, gentle, sheltered. I felt bad for her life before and everything she’s forced to reconcile in a very short period of time. Her age is never revealed (that I recall) but at times she seems very young, which works ok because she is sheltered and isolated, but also doesn’t make her the most likable. She is desperate for a friend or anyone she can trust, and it’s difficult at times to watch her navigate relationships with no real idea how to discern if people are being genuine or using/manipulating her. Also, with only her POV, we must remember she may not be an entirely reliable narrator, and it makes us question even more what’s real.

The pacing felt a tad off, though the book flowed well, the writing was good, and it was well edited. Still I felt like a chunk was missing in the middle/end. Evie’s whole personality seemed to shift from just one conversation, and while I love a meek FMC coming into some power/backbone, it was slightly jarring. We don’t get those important moments where she earns her destiny, learns how to be who she’s meant to be. We don’t get much of the MCs relationship growing, so it never feels completely genuine and we’re not totally bought in. In general this was a unique concept but lacked in execution. While the writing was decent, many details felt omitted (no clue Evie’s age, eye color, etc.) I had a hard time picturing scenes because simple details were left out. And the main issue I had was not feeling connected to the romance. I didn’t feel the chemistry really because I didn’t have a read on Julian.

Thank you to the author for the ARC, this review is voluntary and my own.

What I loved about this book:

❤️ World Building: Being a shorter book, the world building wasn’t overwhelming at all. It was descriptive and drew you in without drowning the story in a bunch of details.

❤️ The Characters: Evie was a likeable and believable character. She used common sense and didn’t let misunderstandings draw out into a full blown “issue” that would take away from the story, and that is something I can always appreciate as so many books seem to take that troupe to the extreme! I really liked Julian, he made the story so sweet (as I know I keep saying!). He was tender and kind while still having that touch her and die vibe.

❤️ The Story: The story was interesting and engaging. It keep me super interested, and once again I have stayed up way past my bedtime to read it. It also stayed in my mind when I had to do other things.

❤️‍🔥Overall: I really like this book. It was a quicker read and I enjoyed it after some of the longer books I’ve been reading. It was a great palate cleanser!

😺 Persian Cat Fact Inspired by:
Persian cats haven’t always had that distinctive flat face, but in the 1950s, a genetic mutation caused a batch of kittens to be born with those scrunched features. Breeders took to the new look and used selective breeding to get that Persian show cat “peke-faced” look. The traditional Persian cat, also known as the doll face, doesn’t have that flat silhouette. This book had me hooked immediately. I couldn’t put it down until I finished it!

The story line is unique and incredibly interesting. I was on the edge of my seat the whole book wondering how everything was going to work out.
The writing is incredible. I mean “Because I can’t wait any longer.” might just be the new “F*ck it”
The twists and reveals had me going “Whaaaaaat?!?” 😱
Every. Single. Time.

I absolutely loved Julian and Evie. 🥰
This man was incredible and the lengths he would go to protect Evie, swoon worthy! 😍
Evie was wrote incredibly well, naive without being like a child and I really enjoyed her journey and self discovery.
The only thing is I wish there was more. The ending felt a little rushed compared to the rest of the book being soooo good. I was missing the detail and felt like a lot of things were left unfinished.
There was so much material that this could have been made into a duology or even a trilogy.
I would have ate it up!
Honestly I just want more! 😂

Daughter of the Daughter of the Wolf Queen by Jenny Mercer

Okay, this book completely hooked me. 🐺✨

Evie grew up thinking her parents sold her for a few coins to buy drink (ouch), and she’s been stuck with her awful, abusive “mam” ever since. Then one day, the Wolf King’s Guard shows up and they need mam to paint a portrait for the soon-to-be queen. But when they smell Evie and see a painted portrait, everything changes. Turns out she might not be who she thinks she is… 👀

There’s werewolves, magic, kings and queens, curses, secrets, a little bit of spice! Basically all the good stuff! The story is fast-paced, emotional, and totally addictive. I couldn’t stop reading.

Honestly, I loved this book. If you’re into fantasy with drama, mystery, and a dash of romance, add this one to your list ASAP. 🖤

Arc review: It's always a great sign when a book demands to be read in a single sitting, and this one absolutely did! I have to be honest, the beginning was a little disorienting—I wasn't quite sure where the story was going, and it caught me completely by surprise.
The initially slow pace was actually essential; it took time to lay out all the simultaneous events, but once the foundation was set, the pace took off. Everything just flowed seamlessly, offering one captivating plot twist after another until I couldn't guess what would happen next! While the ending felt a little quick, leaving me wanting more time with a few key characters, the experience of being so utterly hooked leaves me without any real complaints.
I loved how the author handled the FMC, perfectly balancing her purity and sweet nature without ever making her seem childish. Watching her grow and discover a self-confidence she didn't know she had was a highlight. The MMC was a refreshing change, too—moving from the typical "shadow daddy" into a soft-hearted alpha is unusual, yet his intense nature still shines through. This was genuinely a fantastic read I’d pick up again immediately. My only wish? That it were a bit longer so I could just enjoy those characters even more!

Daughter of the Wolf Queen by Jenny Mercer is a well-crafted fantasy that truly impresses with its vivid settings and engaging dialogue. The author does a wonderful job of creating a richly immersive world that pulls you in from the start. The character development is satisfying, especially as the protagonist evolves from a somewhat helpless figure in the beginning to a stronger, more empowered person by the end. While the main character’s initial vulnerability might feel a bit limiting, it adds to the authenticity of her growth throughout the story. The pacing is balanced, and the interactions between characters are natural and often compelling.Overall, it’s a captivating read with enough depth and charm to keep fans of fantasy engaged. A solid four stars for an enjoyable story that blends strong settings, character evolution, and heartfelt moments with a touch of magic. I look forward to seeing what’s next from Jenny Mercer.

🌟ARC REVIEW🌟

This book moves fast! It was an easy read, with Tangled vibes plus werewolves. It was easy to follow and a stand alone book, which is a nice break from world building series romantasy reads. I read this book in two days, and it was pretty good, honestly if I hadn’t had a terrible migraine I probably would have read it even faster. It was quick and easy to follow. I loved the protective MMC. The FMC has been through it all, and in the end finds peace with her true mate. This book has a little bit of everything: spice, possessiveness, curses, lost family, chosen family, magic, werewolves, wicked stepmother type people. Honestly it could have been twice as long and I would have read it and loved every minute.

Simple romantasy - the world building was very digestible; there aren't too many names/places/titles and only a handful of characters necessary to remember.

The story drew me in right away and I devoured this book in a day. While the FMC (Evie) grew up very isolated, she's observant and quick on her feet. The MMC is alpha of the wolves; he's protective but thoughtful. Evie does realize she's caught up in a lot more than being reunited with her family but doesn't know how to trust (which is smarter than some other heroines).

Overall I found this really enjoyable. Without the spice, this reads more on a YA level, as there are no unexpected twists or turns.

Included tropes:
- kidnapping
- fake mates
- lost heir
- fated mates

Thank you to Jenny Mercer for providing this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

This was a fun, easy to follow story that the one liners at the end of chapters kept pulling me in to read one more chapter. I enjoyed the MMC being a big marshmallow with the FMC but also some really good alpha moments. By biggest critic of the book was the end felt abrupt and I would have loved to have more detail of have everything concluded. There were multiple good touch her and die moments along with other tropes of found princess, fated mates, and he falls first. Overall I throughly enjoyed reading the book and it had an happy ending! I look forward to reading more books by this author 😊

💚ARC Review: The Daughter of the Wolf Queen by Jenny Mercer💚

I was so excited to be gifted an ARC of this book! As soon as I read the blurb, I knew I had to sign up and I’m so glad I was chosen!

From the very beginning, I immediately hated Mam (read it and you’ll know why 👀). The real monster in this story definitely isn’t who you think! I wasn’t sure how to feel about Julian at first, but wow… I fell for him fast. Who doesn’t love a little “taken against your will” energy? I loved how protective he was from the start.

I was nervous about the ending. I thought my man might disappoint me, but I ended up loving it! Things do get a little spicy toward the end, so heads-up if that’s not your thing. There are plenty of twists and turns, and it’s such a fast, addictive read that keeps you hooked the whole way through!

🐺 Wolf shifters, political intrigue and forbidden love 🌶️

I was hooked from the very beginning. It is a very fast paced story following Evie, a peasant girl who may be destined for greater things… As a single POV I found it hard to invest in the MMC, I would have loved more of his background and struggles. I found the wolves story more interesting than Evie’s. I did find it to be a predictable storyline, however still an enjoyable read.

Thank you to Jenny Mercer for letting me read and review this arc copy of Daughter of the Wolf Queen.

I received an early copy of this book, and while the plot felt a bit predictable at times, I still enjoyed the overall read. I’m giving it a 3 primarily because I would have liked more backstory on Julian, the MMC, along with more of his POV throughout the book. The story itself was good and easy to follow, and the wolf shifter storyline always appeals to me. This one delivered a solid plot with some added spice. I did feel the ending was a little rushed and could have been expanded on more, but overall it was still a quick, enjoyable read that I would recommend.

ARC Review 👀

I thought this book was a lovely read and I would want to read the next book to find out what happens next.

I do think that it would have benefited from potentially having chapters from Julian’s POV to add that extra depth. I would have loved more detail on her life beforehand and more surround her emotions towards Julian and suddenly exposed to this new world.

But the main characters have amazing potential to draw us in for further adventures.

Thank you to the author for sending me the earc if this book!

This book was a nice quick read. It was straight into the story with not a lot of build up but it made it a much faster read. The romance was quite quick but was cute.

It did feel like there was something missing from the book though and it felt like there were details that were needed and not said.

I would recommend this book if you need a fast palette cleanser!

First and foremost thank you to Jenny Mercer and team for this arc.

I want to start off by saying this had such IMMENSE potential. The plot devices and writing were good however it tried to squeeze a plot that should have probably had 200-300 more pages into a short quick novella. There was minimal world building and the pacing of the “quest” felt off. Like damn Evie you had a ver eventful week. Cute HeA with good spice tho if that’s what you’re looking for!

I really enjoyed this book and the style of writing. There was a great build up of tension between the FMC and MMC and really loved the ending. This is a great book for a palette cleanse, with a good world build that isnt too complex and characters you can enjoy. I'd definitely recommend.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, and these are my thoughts.

Finding out you're more than what you could ever dream of. Finding family, and love, with a crazy twist of fate.

The characters where enjoyable to get to know. The story line was fun to follow. Over all an amazingly fun adventure. The biggest draw back for me was the end seemed rushed. Otherwise it was the perfect escape from reality I needed

So good! Full of fantasy, romance, shifters, mates, curses, and all the classic tropes (heroine that doesn’t know she’s a princess, shared tent, magically fated mates). The plot wraps up nicely but still leaves a couple of unanswered questions that I’m betting will loop back around as the series progresses.

Wolf queen

Charming and somewhat comp!ex, this Standalone novel tells of a lost princess who returns to her rightful home. Much chaos ensues as the current king tries to retain his throne. The story is broadened by wolf shifters, A curse and fated mates. Well written, despite a rushed ending.

Really easy read, no heavy world building just straight in to the story!

Daughter of the Wolf Queen is an addictive, steamy adult fantasy romance that delivers everything I love about fated mates and forbidden love stories. Jenny Mercer draws you into a vivid world where the political tensions between humans and wolves are woven together with fresh magical twists. I found myself completely absorbed from the start—the story is easy to sink into, and those clever chapter-ending one-liners made it nearly impossible for me to stop reading.

What really makes this novel shine is its characters, especially the dynamic between Evie and Julian. Evie's journey of self-discovery is so compelling. I loved how her sheltered upbringing makes her naive at first, but never in a way that feels childish. Watching her grow and find her strength through all the royal intrigue felt completely authentic and satisfying.

And then there’s Alpha Julian. He is the definition of swoon-worthy, capturing that irresistible fantasy trope of the fiercely protective alpha who would do anything for the heroine, yet melts into a total softie around her. The true mate premise quickly becomes something passionate and real, and I absolutely loved watching their chemistry build with every page.

The plot is full of intriguing reveals, from uncovering Evie’s forgotten past to the real reason behind her kidnapping and the curse haunting the wolves. There are some great twists along the way, and I had a lot of fun trying to piece everything together as the story unfolded.

My only real reservation is that the ending felt a bit abrupt. After such a rich build-up and so many threads of political and magical intrigue, I found myself wishing for a more drawn-out resolution to really savor how everything wrapped up for the characters and the kingdom. Still, the journey there is so addictive, and the world-building is fantastic.

Overall, I highly recommend this one to anyone who loves fantasy retellings with deep character arcs and a steamy, protective hero. This is a journey you won’t want to miss!

I received this as an ARC from the author and am so grateful for the chance to read it early.
