Despite owning a vast collection of books, the two anthologies that comprise New Writings in Horror and the Supernatural, both edited by David A Sutton and published in 1971 and 1972, were somehow missing. So I approached this reprint omnibus edition with an interested eye, wondering if these stories that were written over 50 years ago would stand up against today's dark fiction. I'm delighted to say that they do.
There's a very interesting introduction from David Sutton, which goes into the short-lived series' inception and the details surrounding its eventual demise. The horror genre was a completely different beast back then, and it's hard not to feel longing for such times when the competition was fierce and the market was almost reaching saturation point.
The stories themselves are varied in tone and theme, with very little to date them, with the exception of a few minor points. My personal favourites were 'Charley's Chair' by David Rome, 'The Farmhouse' by David Riley, 'Television Wife' by William Thomas Webb, 'Prison' and 'Shrewhampton North-East', both by Bryn Fortey, and both offerings from Ramsey Campbell - 'Broadcast' and 'The Other House', but quite honestly there isn't a story in this mega-anthology that isn't less than excellent. Recommended.

Great for news fans of this great, (modern) classic anthology series.
