Beautifully Ruined: A Dark Rom-Com

Rate this book
Violet
I should be happy that Cade rescued me,
but all I can think of is the girl who was being held captive with me.
I made a promise that I’d get her out of there.
A promise that I intend to keep.
Even if it means exposing myself,
exploring desires I never even knew I had.
I tell myself that I can handle it,
but how far am I willing to go for someone I barely know?
CADE
Vi is fixated on this girl.
She’s not going to stop until she finds her.
I use every available source to try and figure out who this girl is.
Our search leads us to a forbidden club called The Dungeon.
Turns out, Vi’s got more fantasies hidden away than she realized,
I’m determined to help her unlock them.
I thought finding out who I really am might kill our spark,
but if anything, it’s burning even brighter than before.
But the thing with fire is someone always ends up getting hurt…

Beautifully Ruined is book 2 of the Devoted in the Darkness duet one, where Cade & Violet’s dangerously addictive story began in Sweetly Unhinged—a brother’s best friend, golden-retriever hacker romance with age gap tension and sinful heat.

Picking up where Sweetly Unhinged ended, Cade calls in the cavalry to rescue Violet, who is hesitant to walk away.

You would have thought the worst was behind them after recovering Vi from Ivan. Somehow it was just the beginning.

Excellent premise for the duet with well-balanced smut and storyline. Despite wanting to throat punch Vi a few times, I really enjoyed the unexpected twists we had in the conclusion. I would definitely love to see a book for Enzo because you just know when he falls, it’s gonna be hard!! I wouldn’t be mad about more Lia either!!

An overall review of both books.
The smut was HOT and I enjoyed the first book more than the second, i just did not care for the plot of the second book at all. I loved the ghost plot line in the first but after that it just seemed to fizzle out. Definitely didn’t need a second book and alot of things just didn’t make sense also a major pet peeve of mine is characters putting themselves at risk for absolutely no reason which violet does alot in the second book. To say she’s meant to be a smart and well educated woman she sure did some stupid shit.

I fear I held back a lot in my review of the first book. So I won't be doing that in this one.

Violet was one of the most infuriating, stubborn, and foolish fmc's I've ever read about. It did not help that after every time she made a terrible decision it was just swept away like nothing. It hurt my brain even more when the mmc tried to make her understand what she did wrong just to give in and sleep with her. Once again brushing it all away.

It landed them in trouble one too many times, trouble the mmc had to fix every. single. time. Which was honestly hurtful considering she's supposed to be getting her PhD.

However, I digress... for now.

Aside from that, the only problem I had with the Cade's character is how he continuously gave into her. Because at the end of the day it hurt them more than it helped. He stuck his neck out a lot to help ease her mind. I absolutely loved the way he adored her.

I also loved Enzo's character. He was honestly a great relief and was always right. I'm even tempted to read his books because of it!!

Meh

This wasn’t a horrible book, but I did struggle to get through it since it seemed to drag on and on. It was difficult to not get frustrated with the MFC because she was naive and hardheaded… A horrible combination. The book had so much potential but the excessive inner monologue ruined it.

The story was not as gripping as the first book. I skimmed through the book and just got to the last part to know what happened to Gianna, the truth about Joseph and what happens to Jack. Overall it was just a sub par book.

So, I really enjoyed the first book. Though I do wish it was a single book. I had a feeling I wouldn't love this one, but I needed to get my HEA, so I went for it anyway.

I want to start with, I found nothing wrong specifically with the writing. My problem very well may just be me. I got bored. I seriously didn't care and started skimming to hope to get to the HEA. While I enjoyed the dark kink aspect in book 1. Book 2 was a little over the top for me. It was too much, too many times, and too repetitive. I'm glad they found each other. But it would have been a great story, if it just was completed with one book. The whole side quest of book 1 turning into a main plot of book 2 wasn't enjoyable. Plus how stupid can a girl be. Come on Violet, for as educated and seemingly intelligent as she was. This girl should have been killed off. Seriously, if you could make a bad decision, this girl was all "hold my beer" with her dumb choices. None of it really made sense for any normal individuals. I was annoyed with her behavior throughout the whole book. To the point I wish I never read the series. Or just stopped after the I love yous in book 1 and pretended it was their HEA.

DNF 79%. Violet’s brashness and impatience is grating. I tried postponing reading it but it’s been a week and I finally came to the conclusion that if I can’t force myself to read this, to the point that I’m avoiding my Kindle, then I should just return it.

📚 Beautifully Ruined : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
#2 (Duet)
Cade & Violet 🖤💜

-✨ Tropes : hacker romance / tension / age gap / stalker / trafficking / obsessive MMC / violence / dark rom-com / mystery

Random thoughts : (spoilers)

- Spicy : 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️+++

This book was incredible and I could not put it down! (Spoiler alert for book 1)

Cade and Vi managed to escape from Ivan's clutches, but Vi can't stop thinking about the girl in the other room. She wonders who the girl is and wants to rescue her. As Cade and Enzo dig to find her identity and location, they are led to a club called The Dungeon. The Dungeon is an exclusive BD$M club that may very well also be cover for a trafficking organization. When the girl is identified as the daughter of a congressman, Vi starts an internship in his office to get closer to him, but things shift when they uncover a connection between the congressman and the club owner. As Cade and Vi get to explore more fantasies at the club, their chemistry burns bright. But as they disagree on how to proceed in their investigation, their actions could lead them even deeper into trouble.

This duology was a page turner through and through. The pacing was perfect so I never felt like things were rushed or drawn out. I loved how Cade and Vi were able to discuss their desires and fantasies. I also liked how Vi took time to examine her own desires and did not just acquiesce to Cade. I loved the complex plot and twists and turns. It was so fun to find all of the hidden connections between various characters and how they may not have been as nice as they seemed on the surface. Violet really embraced the social justice mission that she admired in The Ghost and she absolutely shined in this book. I genuinely hope that Enzo, Lia, Gianna, and even Jack all get their own books because I want them all to get their happy endings.

I really enjoyed this two-part story following Cade and Violet's love affair. One that wasn't on the cards initially, but they both soon realised that fling was something deeper. Cade/Ghost can bring out Violet's darker side, her forbidden fantasies, and bring them into the light. Cade knows he has something special with her. This is why he is so overprotective when it comes to what measures they have to take to help hunt down Gianna. Cade knows how murky and dangerous this world can be, what and who can be hidden, ready to pounce, to take, to use, to sell the object of their desire. Where women can be bought and sold as a commodity, a toy, a plaything, a body to be used and abused. He is determined to help her find the missing woman, but he won't let her put her life on the line to do so.

Violet may be new to her kink, new to the pleasure that Cade can give her, to make her soar, new to the world that can be hidden behind closed doors and exclusivity, but she is smart and stronger than Cade gives her credit for. She knows that he is only worried about her safety, but what about Gianna's safety, too? She has to find her as soon as possible to end the torment and abuse she has suffered over the last year.

This story is action-packed from the very start, and it deals with the darker side of human nature. Where kinks can be fun, steamy and intense for those in a consensual relationship, but at the same time, for those who are non-consensual, they can be dark and dangerous.

Cade and Vi were rescued from Ivan's lair after being kidnapped. Cade and Enzo are working hard to trace his whereabouts. Vi is obsessed with finding the woman in the next cell. The hair clip is a key to her identity.
Vi needs to get a new internship to compete her master's degree. Her advisor has suggestions which is include Congressman Walsh who is Gianna's father. She was the woman who Vi connected with in the cell.
The story becomes more complex after Cade and Enzo make the connection between Congressman Walsh and Alistair Thomas who owns an underground club which is involved in trafficking women.
Vi and Cade are invited as guests to the club where Vi is exposed to Alistair's leanings. Cade keeps her in close proximity while trying to gain access to the club's records.
Vi decides to infiltrate the club by working for Thomas. She gains access to the training facility but ends up being captured again by Walsh.
There is a spectacular rescue operation with both Thomas and Walsh being captured and Vi and Gianna being rescued.
There is a touching HEA ending with no cliff hanger.
This story had a very complex plot with multiple subplots and sinister characters.
It is a binge worthy read.

I really enjoyed this second installment and thought it was a strong continuation of the series. This book picks up directly after the first, and it felt like the story gained momentum rather than slowing down.

The pacing worked well for me, with more action and higher stakes while still leaving room for character development and emotional moments. I liked seeing how the relationship continued to evolve and how the story expanded beyond what was introduced in book one. It felt intentional and layered rather than repetitive.

The chemistry was still there, and I appreciated how the characters were tested both individually and together. There were moments that surprised me, and I stayed engaged throughout because it never felt predictable.

This is book two in a planned four book series, and while it does move the story forward in a satisfying way, there are clearly more pieces still to come. Books three and four are not released yet, and I am definitely interested to see where the author takes the story next.

Overall, this was an engaging and well paced read that made me glad I continued the series. I would recommend this one to readers who enjoyed the first book and are looking for a darker romance with ongoing plot and character growth.

We pick up immediately where we left off as our MCs work to get themselves out of the unpleasant circumstances they are in.

This book followed the same formula as the first in this duet. Once this initial issue was resolved the tone shifted back to the more romance feel, with a slight mystery that they’re working towards figuring out. The same issues of kink lifestyle are addressed as the MCs continue to enjoy their relationship and expand into more avenues.

What I really didn’t enjoy is the lack of logic in the decisions making of the characters, mainly the FMC. I pulls me out of the story when choices are made that lack logic and I understand that everyone makes those choices occasionally, but when they contradict the end goal that was previous established as important it makes me want to put the book down and walk away.

There wasn’t much growth for either MC, but there was a need for it, especially for the FMC who got a taste of the unsavoury world the MMC is wrapped up in. You’d think she would learn to adjust her views and be far more cautious, that doesn’t happen.

It was a fine follow up to the first book, nothing exceptional, but I got my wrap up for the duet with a HEA as I wanted.

If I thought the first book in the series was dark, this one went even blacker. To be fair, I’m not a big fan of dark romances, but the initial premise of a woman finding a man to help her live out her sexual desires, including noncon and primal play, had me interested. I liked the characters, Violet and Cade, and the first book had me sufficiently hooked to check out the second. This time around the story focuses much more on the pair trying to save a girl Violet spoke to while she was held captive at the end of the last book. Cade is supposed to be a hot shot hacker, and that allows for him to have money, connections and access to lots of things that make finding the missing girl simple, or at least easy to explain. I would have preferred the book to focus more on the romance between Cade and Violet, but instead there were lots bad guys doing lots of bad things. Oh well. As I mentioned, I’m not a fan of dark romance and extremely morally grey characters like Cade, but the story was well written. I’m sure for fans of this sub-genre it will more than hit the spot.

Beautifully Ruined is the second part of the Devoted in Darkness Duo, and it starts right where book one finished where Cade and Vi managed to escape from Ivan. Vi cannot stop thinking about the other girl in the basement, Cade and Enzo are investigating to find her identity and her location. They find out the girl, Gianna, is the daughter of a congressman, Vi gets a job in his office as an intern before this can be a huge advantage, they discover there is connection between the congressman and the owner of kink club The Dungeon, this is believed to be a cover for human trafficking. Vi will do anything to find Gianna, she feels that only she knows what she has gone through, even though Cade doesn’t agree with what she is doing he is by her side and the bond between them gets stronger as they face more danger. An exciting and captivating end to this two part story it is filled with danger, twists and turns, secrets are revealed and the love between Vi and Cade has strengthened, their chemistry absolutely on fire but their love for each other is just beautiful.

She chases ghosts. He chases her. The mafia chases them both.

We return to Violet and Cade, freshly torn from their attempt at healing, only to be kidnapped by the Russian mafia. Cade is pushed into an impossible corner—destroy a rival syndicate or watch Violet suffer. Thinking fast, he creates just enough chaos to contact his partner, Enzo, and spark a rescue.

Violet wakes in a basement cell, terrified and disoriented, only to discover she isn’t alone. Another girl—drugged, slipping in and out of coherence—tells her she’s been imprisoned for eight months. Violet comforts her through the wall, promising help is coming.

But when the rescue goes down, the mafia pakhan and the girl vanish.

Violet refuses to let her disappear again. She throws herself into increasingly dangerous situations, tracking any lead she can find—even ones that drag her into the infamous ‘Dungeon,’ a world of trafficking, dark desires, and kink.

Cade wants nothing more than to keep Violet safe—but how do you protect someone hell‑bent on saving a ghost? And how far will he go to stop her from destroying herself in the process?.

Arc review

Juxtaposition, this is how Cade & Vi are portrayed. Praise to Kira on her characters.

This is the follow up to Sweetly Unhinged. There is a fine line between fantasies - yes, plural and reality. We continue with Vi / Cade & Enzo. The cliffhanger we were left with only intensified here. What danger are they all putting themselves in? Dealing with the Mafia/Bratva/Politicians is deadly. Computer hackers can only do so much without consequences - hence the situation of Cade & Vi.

This was a sexual roller coaster. Sexually explicit but more than that. Unravelling human trafficking, exploitation, abuse, blood play, BDSM, slavery, this is some of what is present. Vi/Cade & Enzo are on a mission of saviour. From hacking to survival with the Syndicate behind them, they uncover more than they expected. Will they find what/whom they are seeking?
We have gone deeper than the rabbit hole, we have entered Hell. The duet is most definitely 18+ and not for the faint hearted.

Be aware, an excellent storyline of corruption but graphic in description of events.

Exposure and vulnerability

Beautifully Ruined is the 2nd and final book in the Devoted In Darkness duet. This book picks up right where the first book, Sweetly Unhinged, left off. Violet finds herself locked in a cell in a basement. While down there she discovers there is another girl down there and she promises she is going to get both of them out of there, believing that Cade is going to rescue her. Cade finds himself face to face with an enemy of some of his clients and is informed this man is holding Violet as leverage to get Cade to do what he wants. After getting rescued, Violet demands they rescue the girl in the basement, unfortunately there is nobody down there. Violet does find a hair clip that provides the true identity of the girl. Discovering the girl's identity opens up a whole other set of problems and dangers. Will Violet and Cade find the missing girl? Will Cade be able to protect Violet? Will their actions push each other away or draw them closer? Fantastic ending to the duet!!!.

Beautifully Ruined continues from the cliffhanger in Book One. Violet is rescued by her man, and now she wants to find the girl who was in the cell next to hers. Violet finds herself in danger and trouble in her pursuit of finding and saving Gianna. Much to Cade's annoyance and frustration, he wished she'd let him and Enzo deal with the mystery and rescue. Kira keeps you on the edge of your seat, turning the pages as the search for Gianna deepens into dangerous territory.
I recieved an arc from Booksprout for my voluntary honest review for NN Book Blog. If you love a dark, steamy, age gap romance fraught with danger, you will love this book. This book may not be for everyone; please read the author's trigger warnings before purchasing or reading this book. I loved Cade and Violet's story, and it was a book hangover read for me. I hope we may one day get a book about Enzo, as he seems to have led a life full of mystery too.

Book 2!
Cade and Violet’s lives are in danger, Ivan needs Cade to hack a system, and Cade loves Violet enough to risk everything. Violet is kidnapped and told the boss wants to see her, but Cade buys time, hoping Enzo will rescue them. Violet insists on saving a girl in her cell, Gianna Walsh, daughter of a congressman. They seek safety at Enzo’s place, where Violet starts an internship, much better than working for Isaac.

While working late, Violet follows Cade’s GPS and finds him at a private event with a mysterious, dangerous man, Thomas. Violet’s chatter nearly exposes her, but Thomas challenges her skills, leading to a tense confrontation at his club. Violet sneaks inside, using a USB to gather info, but gets caught. She wakes up with Gianna and learns Gianna’s father made a deal with the Russians. Cade rescues them all, taking down Walsh and Thomas.

In the end, Cade and Violet marry and have a baby. The story is spicier than the first. Can't wait to read Enzos story next!

Beautifully Ruined, book two in the Devoted in Darkness series continues the story of Violet and Cade, so read Sweetly Unhinged first. When Cade rescues Violet, she’s torn. Thankful that she’s been rescued, she can’t stop thinking about the other girl who was also there, and vows to rescue her. Cade, using all his resources, and the help of his friend Enzo, manage to track down the girl, who ends up being the daughter of one of the congressmen, to a club known as The Dungeon, an exclusive BDSM club that is also involved in human trafficking. When Violet gets a job working for the congressman, things begin to unravel when they discover that the congressman and club owner are connected. But one thing is for certain, Violet and Cade’s chemistry is even hotter when they begin to explore their fantasies at the club.

Story 4.75 ⭐️
Spice 5 🌶️

Beautifully Ruined is the second part of the Devoted in Darkness duet.

Beautifully Ruined is less of a dark romcom than Sweetly Unhinged was and it deals more with trafficking and kink exploration. Be sure to check the trigger warnings before reading if there are topics that you find potentially triggering.

Violet is even more stubborn and determined than in Sweetly Unhinged as she seeks to find Gianna. She does whatever she thinks is needed to find her, even as Cade fights to try and keep her safe.

While there were a lot fewer laugh out loud moments in Beautifully Ruined, it was difficult to put down. It was really good, just darker and spicier.

Picking up where we left off in book one - I felt a bit of the same way that overall this is meh.
I think I liked book one a bit more due to not really enjoying where book two went and it dragged for me. The Ghost story line was almost not really even here and Violet just annoyed me most of the time. The duet continues to be super spicy and while it isn't the worst it just gets a bit too repetitive and leaned heavily on the spicy and lacked in the plot development. While I'm good with any spicy level - I like a good story line. I think I was more interested in Gianna and what was happening with her than anything else. Overall not the worst but not sure that I'll continue with the 2nd duet in the series.

Beautifully Ruined hooked me from the first page especially because it picks up right where the cliffhanger from the first book left off. Violet shines in this sequel, proving she will go to any length to protect the innocent and bring down anyone who threatens them. Cade is by her side every step of the way and the bond between them only grows stronger as they face danger and desire together. Their night at the club adds a bold and unforgettable spark to their relationship and their chemistry practically leaps off the page. I am already desperate for Enzo to get his own book because every scene he appears in leaves you wanting more.

Loved this book and a perfect ending. Full of so much action and suspense along with the steam.

Violet is hell bent on finding Gianna even if it's against Cade's wishes.

Cade and Violet prove just how perfect they are for each other. It's not just the intimate moments they have a true friendship and understanding along with that.

So well done. This is certainly a split from the usual by Kira Cole but oh my, i really enjoyed the dynamic. An easy read and suspenseful read that kept me intrigued. So good!!.

Book 2, spicy

Spicy, 3.5/5 could have gotten much spicier considering...(No spoilers)
Kidnappings, sex clubs, trafficking, our feisty fmc is determined to find the girl who was imprisoned in the cell next to her.
It's scary, dangerous and that's not including her and Cade's public sex.
Hot, hot, hot. I loved both of them together!
In the end the bad guys are dealt with and our couple gets an HEA and we get eight months later.
End Is still being End I, her bestie Lia isn't with anyone unfortunately no HEA for those two (yet).
Highly recommended this as an ex's brother romance with added oomph.

So I will say this one took a while to finish. Not because of the book per se but life and some of the TW led to needing breaks for me while I read. First off I loved the tie in to how the TW trauma of the characters felt real. There was real reactive responses to the events of the book. I loved that it felt like Jack will get his redemption arc, not sure if he will but I am thrilled it felt like a possibility. I would love to see more from Enzo and his family. And of course the spice was spicing without feeling forced.

Not as good as the first. while the first one focused more on the relationship and the spice this one was more suspense heavy and the tonal shift was hard for me to get behind.

there is a lot going on in this book, and at times it felt a bit bogged down for me, but ultimately it was sweet, tender, funny, romantic, and chocked full of spice to keep me engaged, so ultimately I did enjoy it.

the spice was probably the spiciest I've read. definitely nee territory for me. some of it was a bit OTT, but not trigging so much as it just had me wondering how these two weren't catching jail time.

All in all, the duet was fun and I think I'll check out some of her other stuff.

At the end of book one Cade and Violet were able to escape from Ivan's clutches, but Vi is obsessed with the girl she left behind in the basement. I love that they explore of her fantasies at the club, she feels safe with Cade to bring her fantasy to life. A captivation ending to their story as they can't agree on how to find the missing girl who's in trouble in Ivan's clutches. The story is filled with twists and turns as secrets are uncovered, and they grow closer in this dark romance thriller. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
