Christmas in Harrogate #4

Peppermint and Poison

Rate this book
When a flaming dead body drops out of the town Christmas tree and crashes through your ceiling, it’s safe to say this Christmas will not be merry or bright.
Now my crazy ex-best friend is telling everyone in town I killed Dr. Merriweather.
Yes, he’s her therapist.
Yes, they were having an affair.
No, I don’t know why everyone in our Christmas crazy small town thinks I’m suspect number one.
She even hired a private eye.
Like…hello? Insane?
He shows up all tall and broad shouldered, wearing a trench coat and a fedora—Barf!
And accuses me of lying to cover my tracks.
Like I have time to orchestrate a murder.
I just want to sell holiday treats, keep my café from going under, and survive December without anyone else getting set on fire.
But when your business, reputation, and holiday spirit are on the line, you do what any self-respecting small-town baker does—sharpen your candy cane, hunt down a killer, and try not to kiss the man who thinks you’re a murderer.
And when more bodies start piling up? I know we’re going to have a murderous little Christmas.

Good God, what did I just read?
This is the first time I have felt like I could have edited this better than it was.
This book moved at such an unnecessarily rapid pace. I have read many books that are this length and shorter that had much better plot, and character development and did not feel like I was having some sort of brain spasm just trying to make sense of it.
Both the conversations and thoughts that every character had as well as the introductions to characters with little to no context for who they are, until sort of mentioned later, was jarring to say the least.
It just isn’t formatted in a cohesive way. Even though it technically makes sense most of the time, there is little to no smooth transitioning for anything. Reading this was the equivalent to what my husband explains his ADHD brain is like.
All the characters are cringe he as hell and make jokes that are not funny.
One of the things that I’ve noticed in this book was the fact that both the grandmothers of Willow and Hughes want their grandchildren to find someone and make grandbabies for them, which in itself isn’t really that hard to believe, but they go way over the top, way past the line that they should. Here is a tame exmple of this, “Wtf?? “He sprung you out of jail.” Gran tries to wipe at my face. “You need to let him hit that, girlie. Man puts up that much bail money, he should get to open as many Advent calendar doors as he wants. You feel me?” She swats my hip. “Go get ’em.”
Mind you this is completely unnecessary especially since throughout the whole book it seems like there was a passing attraction at most between Willow and Hughes. Then, out of no where, he is grabbing her waist and getting close but not in a way that it makes sense that he feels he can do it, it just is a new fact with no proof. Willow eventually, Idon’t know, caves into the idea I guess. All I know is from the point that it was kind of obvious that the author was trying to pushing that they were going to now be together, it turned immediately into “Ok, so let’s have sex and get married and I love you within a span of a maximum of five days. There is no significant development between them to where this makes any sense.
Their “sex scene(s)”, if we can call them that were awful and I mean awful. Example: Using “White Christmas” and “Winter Wonderland” as a legitimate sexual fliration that they actually liked…. Ew!
I feel like this is what prudes believe that we read as people who read more than clean romance.
The ONLY good comment that I have for this book is that I didn’t see the second death coming and that. Is. It.
If I had to describe this book in one sentence, I would say “A highly unnecessarily fast paced “mystery” with what the author might think is romance that is objectively unharmfully cringy and unhinged and certainly not worth the amount of time it takes to read it.”
I would personally recommend that you never read this book. I do mean it when I say it was not worth it and I honestly only finished this book out of spite and to see if there was any possible way for it to get better, which spoiler, it never did.
If you’ve made it this far in my review, thank you for listening and I hope you have fun reading your next book, just don’t make it this one.

This is currently the last book in the Christmas in Harrogate series, until there is more released. I sped through these leading up to Christmas, they just drew me in. I love a good cozy mystery, I was looking for Christmas themed books, at the same time not wanting too much Hallmark style as I have read a few of those this Christmas season too.

In this installment, there is a new FMC, with her own Christmas issues, and the chance of falling in love. It is fun to have so many different characters find themselves and someone to love during the holidays, along with a murder thrown in. These books are under 250 pages, perfect length for all the hustle and bustle during the holidays.

I liked this book a decent amount. This book was a short twisty holiday book. I have liked the mystery side that the author has put into these books in this series. They have all been too short and kind of sporadic within the storyline. Sometimes you feel like you get hit with whiplash with how fast the story moves. It was still pretty easy to keep up with though regardless. In a way it was sort of predictable but in another a surprise, however I do have to say that by the end its not a really big shocker on who the killer was. Was a good quick read for the holidays.

I actually enjoyed reading this book. It's made me laugh throughout. The characters were all crazy and a mess.

This bookbis simple and easy to read. It's a fun murder mystery in a small town.

Its cheesy and fun. The characters are out there in their own crazy and I'm here for it.

I love that there are so many suspects and Hughes and Willow are on the hunt for the right person. All the crazy antics just made me smile.

I love the crazy grandmas. Alina knows what's she doing when it comes to creating the most out their Characters.

Humor, mystery, suspense, emotion and steam fuel this delightful holiday cozy mystery romance. I loved this book and Willow and Hughes. Their chemistry was immeasurable, and I shipped them super hard. If you are looking for a cute, over-the-top, read that that can give you feels, have you searching for clues and make you smile so big your face hurts, you need this book and in fact this whole series.

A holiday, small town, slow burn, enemies to lovers, contemporary romance with some suspense. In the holiday cozy romantic mystery series, Christmas in Harrogate, Peppermint and Poison follows an investigation where Willow is pointed out by her psycho ex-bestie as having been the culprit. It was a great page turner, a good who done it mystery. I definitely think this book is worth reading, sweet, funny and a good murder mystery. Very fun mystery.

This romance/mystery/short novel had its entertaining moments. I enjoy this author's books because the humous is quirky and different, but my one criticism is the huge number of characters. There are so many in this story. I felt I had to dig out the H/h from all the side players that make up Harrogate at Christmas. I loved the hero's trench coat and fedora!

Pros, this was a cute story or at least a cute idea.
Cons, the writing. It was bad. It was hard to follow, because the writing was bad. I think just a better editor would seriously help.

Murder in the Christmas Market.

For Willow the Harrogate Christmas Market is always a busy time at her bakery, but she still intends to enjoy everything it has to offer. Unfortunately, her crazy business partner's therapist is murdered, and she is the prime suspect. Hughes sold his software company for an obscene amount of money, and now he is living his dream of being a P.I. His first case is solving the murder of a therapist, but then his client ends up dead, too. Teaming up, Willow and Hughes are determined to hunt down the murderer, and they will also fall in love.
These are some hysterically funny and very entertaining characters that made me laugh so hard it left me gasping for breath. Compelling and with complex personalities these characters kept me engaged from the first page to the last. Murder and mayhem, twinkle lights and tinsel, surprising twists and turns in the plot. This is a must-read steamy romantic comedy with a mystery thrown in and a happily ever after. I loved this book.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC provide by the author.

Willow has a business partner Taylor Grace, who never shows up for work, yet spends all the income from the candy shop. Taylor has major anger problems aand truly believes Willow is trying to shove her out. She is going to a psychiatrist to deal with her issues, or so they say. Turns out she was having an affair with him. She hires a private eye to investigate the business dealings of Willow. The day of the town tree lighting a fire starts and the dead burning body lands on Willow's holiday booth. The next while she falls under a Taylor Grace campaign telling all that Willow was the murderer. That private eye does as Taylor says since she has hired him. The campaign ends when Taylor Grace is found murdered as well. I liked this book and honestly did not like Hughes at all. His character had me literally angry at him. That is the skill of Alina Jacobs. She can bring the characters to life. You have to read this story and I will drop a hint, Hughes kisses Willow!

Willow is caught in a bad spot, she's got a business that is beyond struggling or barely hanging on. It's more in the imminently failing category, though it's owner(s) being fairly absent, probably doesn't help. She's got a ex-bestie who is constantly making her life harder and loudly accusing her of everything under the sun, including murder. She's also surrounded by way too many interfering grannies, and a 'best friend' who only cares about what sweets she can freeload off her friends failing business (despite having plenty of money herself).

Hughes worried me at first. He is in his thirties but written like a 16 year old playing dress-up. Thankfully he settles in as the book goes along and seems more balanced even if a bit immature. More the under-socialized nerd type.

The mystery was good. There were plenty of suspects and a lot of intrigue and action along the way. And the conclusion felt like it circled back and wrapped things up well.

“It’s age forty, which I’m not. And I’m not a virgin,” I snap.

First off… yes, I have an odd relationship with this author’s works. It’s a push & pull between love and ‘dislike’. She has some books that are top tier and then some that are so difficult to read. (My opinion)

This one is a bit mid road.
Kooky. Corny. A little bit funny. But, it’s a miss for me. It was mainly the style and substance here.
That being said- it was a nice read to break up my other books and honestly, the holiday feels and vibes were on point in this one. I don’t regret reading it. I just didn’t love it.
It’s murder and holiday season—- so I have to give it kudos for the blending. 🌲

Murder mayhem & baked goods. 🌲🔪🧁

Entertaining read centering around the (for the most part) crazies living in Harrogate. Hughes is visiting his grandmother and playing at being a detective (think film noir) Fortunately he limits describing his actions most of the time, although he does wear a trench coat and fedora. The lighting of the town’s Christmas tree manifests his first case when a local therapist’s body falls from the branches.

Willow is the chief suspect because the therapist had been counseling her ex-partner, a true whacko. The local police are a joke. Hughes stalks Willow as she endeavors to clear her name and find the real murderer. Suspects come and go as the two finally start working together. A romance ensues as they pursue Truth, Justice and the American way.

This was the most confusing of the series. Most of the time I had no idea who anyone was. So many names to remember

Why did people think she killed the guy at the beginning? She never moved. Why are the police so incompetent in this town? They haven't solved 1 of the murders

What's the timeline of these books cos Lilith like Christmas by the end of her book but hated it again in this one?

Does a man really drop everything to become a PI when he knows nothing about been a PI?

There were so many twists at the end and so many different people accused that when we found out who it was, I didn't know who they were

This one seemed a lot more rushed than the others

Then over at 87%

Peppermint and Poison is a delightfully chaotic holiday romantic mystery that had me grinning from start to finish. Packed with quirky small-town characters, it delivers the perfect blend of cozy charm and wacky antics. This quick, lively read serves up murder, romance, and holiday cheer in equal measure—like spiking your hot cocoa with just the right amount of danger.

Between the murder, the romance, and the candy-cane-coated chaos of small-town antics, it’s quirky, light, and delightfully absurd. If you’re in the mood for a festive read with wacky characters and a dash of holiday cheer, Peppermint and Poison delivers.

I love Alina Jacob’s books! They r laugh out loud funny! This book is no exception! Willow runs a bakery and Taylor Grace is insane claiming the business is half her! Along with her enabling shrink she makes everyone’s lives miserable. Who want her dead? Everyone in the same town as well as her family. Willow teams up with hottie Hughes to try and solve it.
This book was absolutely entertaining! It was good to see old characters mixed with new ones. Who doesn’t love Herrogate with its colorful characters! I highly recommend this hilarious Christmas story! I look forward to reading more of Ms Jacob’s books.

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the latest festive tale from Harrogate! Hughes and Willow join forces to solve the latest murders in town and fall in love along the way. As ever, the cantankerous elderly residents of Harrogate are keen to help / hinder both the investigation and the budding romance. There is no shortage of suspects and I didn’t figure out the identity of the murderer until the denouement at the end of the book. I loved the book and am now off to reread all the previous Harrogate Christmas books.

An amusing holiday cozy mystery that hit the spot in every way imaginable. The suspense had me on the edge of my seat, the characters are likable and their chemistry is off the charts hot. Then there's the parts that had me laughing and wanting it not to end. I enjoyed reading this book and it set me on the need to read more of Alina Jacobs books, so my journey begins with this book and I can't wait to get into more. Highly recommend reading.

Another fun Christmas romance disguised as a whodunit

Such a fun story! Willow is definitely striking out in the BFF department, with her actual BFF doing the harried married with kids thing, her pretend BFF being a gaslighting nutball and her wannabe BFF being trying just a bit too hard. Enter Hughes, the budding PI circa the 1940s, complete with a fedora and a trench coat, in spite of the cold Christmas weather. A murder in the Christmas bazaar brings them together, but solving it brings them love!

Quirky characters and holiday murders

This series is so much fun! The quirky characters with a holiday murder are always a good read. I love how Alina's characters are everyday people with flaws and quirks. It makes them relatable. Wishing there was a real Harrowgate so I could move there! In this story, Willow is a harried shop owner dealing with a crazy ex partner and she's accused of not one but two murders. Hughes is a wanna be PI who's visiting and determined to solve those murders. Insert hijinks, love, and of course meddling grannies. Another great read from Alina!

Willow runs a bakery and the christmas market is her busiest time of the year, she doesnt need to become the prime suspense in her buisness partners therapists murder! Hughes gave up his job and poured everything into becoming an PI but he doesn't explain his first client to end up dead or working with the prime suspect, let alone falling for her! Well written engaging steamy funny, who dun it, twists and more

Cozy Murder in a Small Town

This fourth entry was a little disappointing. I didn't expect it to be gold star worthy but I did at least expect proper editing. Names were misspelled multiple times and whenever that happens, it feels like the author doesn't really care. Like they're just pushing products out in a hurry just to have them out there.

Otherwise, sort of typical story for Alina Jacobs. Fast in love, small town drama, lots of he said she said. 3 Stars.

Murder Problems

Murder upsets the balance of Christmas planning for Willow, especially when she is being accused of committing it. When PI Hughes is on the case they must work together tonclear her name. The twists and turns of this story were exciting as well as suspenseful. It was definitely entertaining to read.

This cosy romance murder mystery had me hooked. The action starts pretty quick and it kept me guessing on who the murderer was until the end. I was so invested and the slow burn romance between Hughes and Willow was adorably sweet. I’m glad they got their HEA. I now need to go read the other books in this series cos I’m addicted now. Alina Jacob has written an adorable Christmas mystery that I’m definitely gonna be recommending to my friends
