I honestly wasn’t prepared for how deeply it would pull me in. From the first chapter, the writing feels cinematic—rich, immersive, and full of quiet intelligence. The world-building is layered and believable, and the political intrigue running beneath the action gives this story real weight.

Kaelen is the kind of protagonist that sticks with you: flawed, introspective, and quietly brave. Watching him evolve from reluctant diplomat’s son to someone questioning the very system that shaped him was incredible. The prose is elegant and deliberate, at times poetic, and the dialogue carries tension in all the right ways.

By the midpoint, I realized this wasn’t just a sci-fi competition story. It’s about control, manipulation, and what it costs to hold onto humanity in a world built on performance and illusion.

The final chapters left me speechless. It’s the kind of book that makes you think long after you’ve finished. If you enjoy intelligent sci-fi with emotional depth, something that sits between Dune and Red Rising, this needs to be on your radar.

R. J. Thompson’s Shadow of Helios: Book 1 of the Solar Realms Saga is an ambitious beginning to a brand-new fantasy series, incorporating elements of mythology and character-driven plotline. The novel creates a fascinatingly detailed universe, where celestial phenomena and the plight of men are intertwined; moreover, R. J. Thompson’s style tends to be somewhat poetic in his description of the places and characters’ surroundings in the Solar Realms. The main advantage of the book is, undoubtedly, the author’s ability to create a fascinating world and develop the mythology of Helios, including the balance of darkness and light in it. The disadvantage of the novel, on the other hand, is the weakness of the plotline and the characters, whose motivations and personalities seem to require further development. The rhythm of the book is also rather chaotic due to the lack of focus of some episodes, but the conflict remains quite captivating. Shadow of Helios is the first book in the Solar Realms Saga by R.J. Thompson. This novel is a sci-fi thriller that blends together palpable action scenes and struggles for survival with political intrigue. Kaelen Voss is an unwilling intelectual from Earth, who is forced into a deadly tournament that is being broadcasted through the galaxy.  Kaelen is representing his planet aboard Helios, the gigantic arena-station.

This action-packed novel is full of suspenseful scenes of survival, nonstop action and deception. Kaelen must use his cunning and natural instincts and choose whether to compete in a deadly game competition that is clearly rigged and live or reveal the truth and risk the reality of death.

I enjoyed "Shadow of Helios" and I look forward to the next book in the series! The author is definitely a great writer when it comes to describing raw emotion. The book starts out slow and focuses on character development, but the last half was like unto a fast-paced thriller. The scene is well set for "what next?" in the promised series. Why only 4 stars? I do wish there was a "Chapter Zero" that would explain the world that we are reading about. How did the interplanetary council form? Who is the power broker in this Solar System of the future? I felt a little lost on the scene at the beginning, but this was still a great read in this genre.

If you're into sci-fi that prioritizes brains over physical force this is definitely for you. Think The Hunger Games meets Dune following a normal guy who has to outsmart genetically modified soldiers in a rigged competition. It's incredibly fast paced, the tension is real and the shifting alliances will keep you guessing. It is the perfect pick if you want a book that still challenges your mind
