Ingrid's difference marks her from birth. The horror isn't her tail, it's the violence carved into her for it. Brutal and unflinching, this splatterpunk fairytale shows how quickly cruelty festers when difference is revealed.
Ryan Danley brings a fresh take on splatterpunk with this brutal fairytale. Ingrid is born with a tail which seems to have a mind of its own. While Ingrid's abnormality is central to the plot, the real story is how Ingrid is treated by society. Her tail is the impetus for her situation but not why she is victimized... it's simpler than that. People in power abuse because they can. In such a way, Ingrid's story is not unique but the way in which Ryan crafts the narrative entrances the reader and keeps you hooked from start to finish.
This has left a hole in my heart. The most bleak book I’ve read in a hot minute. Ingrid was born with a tail. She’s different. Never having proper help to become one with this part of her body and accept it - it has a mind of its own. She numbs herself with drugs and violence - her tail doing a lot of the work. She becomes a well oiled machine without emotions. Ingrid legit never stood a chance.
