Renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Laurel Adler is no stranger to being wanted. Her services are in such demand, people travel from all over the world to see her. Today, though, she only wants one thing. One very specific thing. She wants her ex-husband to feel regret as he watches her walk out of his life, and she's chosen the perfect revenge dress for the occasion.
But a chance encounter with a stray dog and a hauntingly beautiful veterinarian causes Laurel to question everything, including what it means to want and be wanted...
Rachel Lacey is an award-winning contemporary romance author and semi-reformed travel junkie. She's been climbed by a monkey on a mountain in Japan, gone scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, and camped out overnight in New York City for a chance to be an extra in a movie. These days, the majority of her adventures take place on the pages of the books she writes. She lives in the mountains of Vermont with her family and a variety of rescue pets.
This novella was really sweet! Unfortunately, it was much too short, and I would have liked to read another 50 pages about surgeon Laurel and veterinarian Dana. The two had great chemistry, and even in this short time, there was a wonderful romantic tension between them. And very steamy! I like the title, especially now that I know what it refers to.
A quick, easy read! Delightful spice and great characters!
This little sapphic romance was… Short. And steamy! Short and steamy. And… And… Steamy while also short?
Here is my hangup. I never have a problem with “insta-love” as a concept. If an author can write a romance and have me believing the couple have fallen in love after only a month or week, or even a day (see Kiss Her Once for Me for one-day fell in love perfection), then bravo, well done author. But here, Lacey tries to convince the reader that Laurel and Dana have fallen in love after 65 pages, with about 40 percent of that the sex scene. Yeah, no. And the crazy part is she maybe could have sold it if the love declarations didn’t come in a only-three-months-later epilogue. Why not make the epilogue six months, or nine months later?
Anyway, this book was sweet, but too short for any HEA believability.
4☆ A short story which takes place in Rachel's "Midnight in Manhatten" universum. A sweet and sexy romance. I would love to read more about Laurel and Dana.
A cute sapphic novella linked to the Midnight in Manhattan series about Dr. Laurel Adler, a neurosurgeon who rushes to a vet clinic in an emergency and meets Dr. Dana Roth. Yes, Laurel literally just signed divorce papers, but she’s far from brokenhearted and can’t ignore how gorgeous the vet is. Overall, a sweet romance with some spice added to it for good measure.
Meet Me at Midnight by Rachel Lacey is a short and spicy one-night-to-forever story about two sexy, competent women who know what they want and aren't afraid to ask for it. Neurosurgeon Laurel and veterinarian Dana hit it off immediately over an injured stray dog and, after a steamy night, decide to keep seeing each other. Well, that's it. That's the story. We get a quick introduction to both women, which gives a nice idea of their personalities and current life status. They have a drink together, share a night of passion, and get an epilogue. I like Rachel Lacey's writing style. This quick read is nice if you know what to expect. There's not much build-up to the sex or the declaration. No angst, no conflict. I'm not a huge fan of insta-love in general, but there's no denying that lesbians can and do accomplish impressive things. I will say that, for a long-term HEA, a full-length follow-up would be needed to show all the hard work it would take. This one is just a short-and-sweet palate cleanser. I enjoyed it. #instalove #onenighttoforever #doctors #neurosurgeon #veterinarian #straydog #cutecats #spicy #HEA #HFN #epilogue #birep #divorce #Manhattan #NewYork #competencyissexy #consent #safesex
Laurel is a doctor, a neurosurgeon, just getting divorced. On the day of her divorce through an unfortunate series of events she meets Dana, a veterinarian doctor. This is a very short story, lovely in its simplicity. Beautiful in its writing.
To be honest, I'm only giving this 3 stars because Rachel Lacey is my favorite author. I thought about not rating it at all because it's so incredibly short. I sadly didn't enjoy this at all. I didn't really connect to the characters and didn't see the chemistry. Nothing happened and I was incredibly bored. And the spice was so lackluster.
cute story, definitely had scenes i enjoyed! just couldn't sell myself on the couple completely. their interactions felt very surface level, so i wish we could have seen them connect on a deeper level - even if it was in the epilogue!
“Because escaping into a fictional world was a great way to forget about reality.”
Was it short? Of course, it’s a short story afterall. Would have wanted more? Of course, but isn’t that the case every time you care deeply for a character (no matter if it’s 50 or 500 pages)? And how deeply did I care about these two! Their alchemy is incredible since the beginning, and they rapidly blaze together. I absolutely loved how respectful they are with each other, without being condescending, even for just one second. I loved it!
Laurel is a neurosurgeon who just finalized her divorce when a car rans over a dog. (The dog lives so no worries.) She takes to the vet because no one claims ownership where she meets gorgeous Dana.
The chemistry is instant and the rest is history.
This story is perfect if you need a pick-me-up where veterinarians are superheroes and second chance at life is possible at any age. Plus, the level of heat!! Talk about a sapphic awakening!
I got a Kindle for Christmas since I heard they're great for getting you out of a reading slump, and I didn't think I'd finish a book so quickly after getting it. Well, it's a short story, but it counts. I need to properly resume Evelyn Hugo, and Twilight is kind of boring, but you knew that. For the time being, I'm reading short stuff.
Anyway, this is a wonderful little story with an adorable meet-cute and a fantastic spicy scene, both of which remind me I need to read more lesbian fiction. I haven't had such a wonderfully visceral reaction to a scene like that in a while. I don't see enough sapphic stuff between a lesbian and a bisexual woman who's just left a relationship, so that's certainly unique. It's a good introduction to Rachel Lacey's style, and now that I have Kindle Unlimited, I've already added a bunch of her books to my Kindle. I do wish it were longer, since our two leads are unique and gorgeous and very interesting, but this is great on its own. I also think the writing can delve into the unnecessarily specific at times, and like Twilight it's annoyingly averse to the word "said", but these are mostly nitpicks. It's a great time, and I do recommend it if you're in the mood for a story like it.
4⭐️? Maybe? It’s hard to numerically rate a book this short🤣
This was a cute short story that felt a little like a fanfic.
The stakes weren’t high, characters were sweet. I probs would’ve rated it higher should my favourite tropes been involved - Enemies to lovers? Age gap?
But despite that - it was refreshing reading about two older woman, one in which had been in a heterosexual relationship prior and is now embracing her sexuality through being with a woman. The intimate seems as a result seemed very liberating and positive.
Spoiler:
I’m nitpicking but I didn’t like how in the epilogue it says that they haven’t really defined what they are but they know it’s not just casual? Like??? You guys are grown adults - call each other partners/ girlfriends? Especially after the love confession ??
But alas - overall it was sweet! 2nd book of 2026 done (and yes… short stories count🤣)
