Excellent description of the history of the Ghetto of Venice. The Venetian Ghetto was the first of it's kind. In our time Jews are forced back into a virtual Ghetto, because of the rise in anti-Semitism, so maybe it's time to explore the original Ghetto. The book includes a history of Venice and Italy, which is very helpful for understanding the context in which the Ghetto developed.
