In Arresia, there is a darkness that does not relent until you’ve breathed your last. Ravenna has been trailed by those shadows her entire life, but now, she is consumed by them. When she finds herself outside of the protections of Vestele and without the people who once served as her shield against the night, she is forced to bow before the evil Despiri king. His command hangs in the air between them, and Ravenna is met with a choice. Will she become a reluctant slave to the King of Darkness, or a willing servant of the Light she never knew?
Dawn of Doves is book 2 in the Til Kingdom Come series.
Wow. Just wow. There are so many hard things in this book. So many moments that completely broke my heart, but also so many times that hope shone through in seemingly impossible situations.
Those times are what encouraged me to keep reading through some of the characters darkest times and to keep striving to reach out to the light. Sitting with this ending and reflecting back over the story, I can see how many of our characters are on the brink of choosing between the Light or the darkness and I can’t wait to see how their storylines develop further.
Merrick and Leith in particular were huge surprises and POVs that I ended up really enjoying. I also loved learning more about the Light through some of the other characters and through the letters that Zephaniah wrote.
I’m eagerly waiting for the next book in the series and I really feel like I need to go back and reread Rush of Ravens knowing what I know now.
Content Warnings: depiction of torture (mild descriptions), death, feelings of guilt and wishes of death, slavery and murder. Mentions of witches, darkness used as a weapon, and spells (all of these are evil and not glorified).
Thank you Abigail for letting me be an ARC reader for this roller coaster of a book.
This book was so good, the character development is great, the story was amazing and I can’t wait to continue reading the series.
This book kept me on my toes the whole way, it gave me hope and fear for the characters. This is one of the best series I’ve read in a while, definitely one of my top favorites.
“You cannot be a shield against darkness when you wallow in the shadows yourself.”
OHMYGOD THIS BOOK!!! I never had a doubt that I would love this one but THIS MUCH!??! Every time I read a book of this series, I am truly reminded of why I enjoy this genre. Fantasy truly has the best ability to transport you far away from real life. And don’t we all require exactly that?
The extremely epic world-building here has now made it so that multiple characters crossed paths with each other for the first time. All of these highly anticipated meets and their consequences in addition to the new characters and their potential further in the story has me giddy excited for more from this world. And yes, sitting on this cliffhanger is going to be difficult but I know it will be soooo worth it.
“He’d fight for her til kingdom come.”
And goodness, that prophecy!?! Surely going to be thinking about it randomly and constantly.
Thank you for letting me be an advance reader yet again. If you ever want a permanent ARC reader, you have that in me. Thank you so so much!! 💛
6 stars ⭐ I received an arc of Dawn of Doves a month ago and truly have not been able to stop thinking about it! Their is so much that I want to say but I don't know how without giving spoilers as their is just so much happening in this book (in a good way) so many things that I did NOT see coming, had me wanting to shout at the pages at times 🫢 we're introduced to some new characters and storylines as well that I really enjoyed, and if you're waiting to hear more from certain MC's from book 1...you'll just have to go and get the book 😏
I absolutely LOVED this book! Sometimes multi POV books are messy or confusing, but Abigail takes you through the different POVs seamlessly! The new characters are so good and bring a great diversity of personalities! I absolutely love Sabrine and the depth we get in this book with Ravenna’s story. I read the novella Sea of Sorrows before Dawn of Doves and loved it. The background you get really makes you care about some of the characters and understand them.
~First of all, thank you Abigail Brier for choosing me to be an ARC reader!~
Rating: 4 1/2-5 🌟
I really enjoyed this book!! The emotions, the characters, the world building, and everything in-between! Abigail Brier does an amazing job weaving everything together to create an unforgettable reading experience!
I think my favorite characters so far are Cove, Elias (if he dies, so help me Abigail...), Leith, and (recently) Nakoa!
As for romance, I definitely have a few new ships to root for in the upcoming books 👀 ♥ . Can't wait to see where the characters' relationships go!
Now, I do have to say that it did feel a little preachy at times. Several times throughout the story some characters would just break out into scripture or inspirational speeches about the Light, and -while it was SO cool to read about something clearly based in Christianity- it felt a little out of place and not necessarily "forced", but something akin to it. It took me out of the story a few times, and it felt a little OOC for some of the characters to start waxing poetic in the middle of an intense scene.
But other than that, I did really love this book, and I can't wait for the next one! ♥
THIS. WAS. SO. GOOD!! You know a book is great when it rips your heart out, sticks it through a blender, and stitches it back together again. Dawn of Doves did exactly that for me.
Abigail Brier is SUCH a motivated, committed artist who pours her heart and soul into her work, and part of the reason this series is so special to me is because I know it’s so special to her! The love she holds for this series does not go unnoticed. I will forever appreciate and admire how she gives glory to the Father through her work and shines her Light for the world to see. I love how she doesn’t shy away from dark and brutal content, not because she glorifies it as many fantasy authors seem to do, but because she acknowledges the evil of it and is set out to write the truth: Darkness is powerful, but the Light FAR exceeds it.
Repetition was the one thing I felt this book struggled with. I got kinda irritated with the amount of times Ravenna's dark thoughts and struggles were rephrased and reiterated, no matter how realistic incessant lies in our heads are. It still felt a bit redundant to be fed that information over and over as a reader. Repetition was an issue through the rest of the book for me when stuff would come up that had already been established like character's mindsets or opinions. But it wasn’t enough to keep me from loving the story.
As for the plot? Abigail Brier knows how to tell a story!! The twists and turns of this book kept me flipping pages like there was no tomorrow! Brier has set a goal for Ravenna to achieve, yet from where Ravenna—and us readers—stand, it looks impossible. THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE A COMPELLING STORY! We have an idea of what will happen at the end of the series, but no clue how we’ll get there. Each plot twist Brier concocts is brilliant, sensible, and relevant. I hold crazy admiration for how she turns details we thought were insignificant into wildly important pieces of the puzzle. Plotting this well is HARD, especially for a series. As someone who honestly stinks at it, I applaud Brier's understanding and almost mastery of it.
As for characters, I was worried from time to time that a few would lose their unique traits and personality quirks, BUT each one was still stunningly fleshed out and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. One particular character makes me crack a beaming smile whenever I so much as think of their name sooo :) I was excited to see some favorite characters return and to meet new ones with solid internal conflicts and motives. I feel like those are rare things to get right for having so many side characters with POVs, so Abigail, you're incredible.
Thank you Abigail for having the courage to take on this massive yet rewarding project and for keeping the Father of Lights at the center of it all.
...........also the DOUBLE CLIFFHANDER??? still reeling. this series is everythingggg
WHOAAAA this book is a ROLLERCOASTER of Light vs. Darkness. (Definitely read Sea of Sorrows first to get all the plot points!)
As Abigail promised, it's full of complex characters, relationships and world building, and the plot is soo complex and twisting. I will definitely have to reread it all once the whole series is out!
I don't know how much I can say without spoilers, because it's that good. While there are a lot of cases of extreme darkness, and characters making choices out of what they feel is necessity, none of the choices feel unrealistic. Abigail has done a great job of getting into every character's head, and making each character (especially those that we get POV chapters from) feel real, and dynamic, and I can't wait to see how each and every one of them grows and changes. The darkness is there to reflect our own world, but I can see either potential for, or already happened cases of the Father of Lights using the Darkness that each character goes through to lighten their path and draw them to him in the long run, and I love this reflection of our world.
The things that some of these characters have to go through, and the symbolism (the braids?! like OOF please punch me in the gut again...) connected break my heart, but I think the heartbreak leads to the best character growth and connection between all the characters. Thank you for this book Abigail, I can't wait for more!! (did I succeed in not spoiling things?)
Thank you so much to Abigail Brier for choosing me as an ARC reader for this book. I was so excited to read when I received the ARC email.
All I can say is wow. Brier really upped the stakes. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat pretty much the whole time I was reading. I also went through an emotional roller coaster with everything that went on. However, in the absolute best way. And Mrs. Brier, you know what I mean.
Brier wasn’t afraid to write the emotional and heart wrenching parts to this story. And that’s what I love about her writing. I love the hardships the characters had to go through because it helped me to connect and feel with them. I love it when books do that.
I can only imagine how hard this book was to write, but I can also see how much love went into the craft, and it makes it worth it because I loved this book so much. I loved the Christian allegories throughout the story, however, it can be loved by non Christians as well.
I also loved the new characters that were introduced. I loved the romantic subplots, the plot itself, the POVs (yes, it’s multiple POVs, but it makes sense), and everything about the book.
The ending had me screaming “NO” and I need the third book. Thank you so much, Abigail, for writing the story and for blessing me once more for an opportunity to ARC read. 💕
Dawn of Doves is a work of art. Wow. The series as whole (so far) is breathtaking. I will be over here - not so patiently - waiting for whatever Brier blesses us with next.
I loved all the characters & how their stories intertwined even from across the kingdom. The multiple POV’s definitely kept me enthralled with the story from beginning to end. This books was a doozy (700 pages) but I never thought any of it could have been left out. I was down for every single twist & turn.
I think this series will end up being 8 books (per Brier’s instagram) & I have no doubt I will love every second of it. This story really shows what it is like to fight for the Kingdom. It is not an easy open & shut book. Darkness does not always fall over night or with one hero. Darkness will fall but sometimes it takes an all out war. Taking time, lives, dedication, blood, strength & surrender.
The nods to Scripture made my heart so happy. Each event was beautifully woven into this story. For me it was an emotional reminder of the Heroes of the Faith - all who have fought before us. & when washes her feet - 🤎🤎🤎
If you want an epic fantasy that speaks of the One True Light - please pick up this series!
First, thank you Abigail for the opportunity to ARC read this book. This is my honest review.
My goodness, this series!! I'll be thinking about it daily for a while I think. And I need the next book ASAP! We pick up, pretty much right after the end of book 1, maybe a few days have passed at most? And while I felt like it was a bit of a slow start to grasp all the POV changes, once I knew who everyone was, I never knew who I wanted to stay with most! Every character/pairing just fully has my heart and I'm rooting for them. Well, except Jara and Degare 😂 they can kick rocks.
I'm usually one who sees twists coming a mile away, but there were multiple that I was shocked by! I won't give any spoilers, but whew! This book is a roller-coaster of emotions!
Xan still drives me up a wall, and I need to know Leith's back story SO BAD! Especially now that we've met a couple more people in this book who connect to him. But isn't that the point of a good story, that done of the characters become your BFF and others you just want to strangle? I think so.
Anyway, this was an easy 4.5🌟 for me and I cannot wait for the next one!!
It is a truly breathtaking story that gives such a beautiful and raw account of the battle between light and darkness. Ravena is struggling in that battle and finds temporary comfort in the numbness the dark can offer her. Her battle of accepting grace and forgiveness she doesn't feel she deserves is such a relatable battle i feel we all face. Abigail truly has started a series that I can not wait to finish. The story and world she has created are so profound and soul stirring. The characters each have such a unique personality all their own, and each bring a beautiful piece to the puzzle of the tale. I was swept away from the very first page, and that continued until the last page, where it had me on the edge of my seat, already counting down until we can see what happens next. I struggle writing a review for this book and this series because my words will never do it justice.
thank you so much, Abigail, for an early copy of this book. the review and my opinions are all my own
Okay, if you’re not ready to have your heart ripped out maybe don’t read this right now. 😂😭 No, but in all seriousness this book is so good. You absolutely have to read the first. And then as fair warning this ends on a cliffhanger and you’re going to desperately want the next. It’s just so good.
Ravenna is back guys and it’s challenging. Some dark times are here. The light is fighting hard and they are not in despair but things are grim. This portrayal of the fight for Ravenna, of the fight for life is just beautiful.
Okay, fair warning this is a lengthy read. In saying that, the fight for redemption is woven so beautifully throughout and I am over here baffled at how I can connect with characters and have so much frustration when they are fictional.
CW: violence, k**ling, drinking, (it’s not really a romance at all so no CW for that), Christian themes.
WOW. YES. Absolutely LOVE the second book in the ongoing Til Kingdom Come series. I do not even know where to start. It picks up immediately where the first book and novella leave off, so there is no random time gap in between. The characters and story development from both previous books begin to fully intertwine in Dawn of Doves. Characters I did not necessarily think I would like have become new favorites. All of the romantic subplots add that much more meaning to the bigger picture, of pointing everyone to the Light (Jesus the Lord and Savior). I love how applicable the concepts are to our current world and struggle as Christians to be a light for Him. HIGHLY recommend (but start with the first two). 11/10!!!!
First of all, thank you so much Abigail, for letting me be an ARC reader for this book!!
This book broke and healed me at the same time. Abigail really wasn't afraid to touch on painful subjects and I felt every part of it.
It showed such a strong image of hope in times of darkness, of loss, of pain and grieve. I cried quite a few times... Abigail did such an amazing job at writing the transitions of these characters throughout the books and I loved every part of it!
For me, Abigail will always be one of my favorite authors. Her books will always be a light in this world.
Owwwww! It’s so good! 😭 All the characters that came back, and those who didn’t that I will never quite get over, and the way Ravenna struggles with her own darkness and the draw toward the light . . . 👌 It’s so good! 😅 And PLEASE don’t ask me how I finished Sea of Sorrows & Dawn of Doves in two days while working during the day. My sleep schedule isn’t taking questions right now.
Content warnings: dark magic/witchcraft (as a contrast and evil opposing force to the light), slavery, violence, self-harming behaviors, religious intolerance, murder, torture. Spice-free.
What an INCREDIBLE continuation of this series! While the book is a brick lol, I didn’t feel like anything could’ve been left out. I loved all the different character POVs, the struggle between darkness and light, and the even higher stakes. The two cliffhangers at the end had my jaw on the floor, and I don’t know how I’m going to wait for book three. This series continues to deliver, and it’s on pace to become my favorite series I’ve ever read.
This is by far my favorite book in the series, even though I keep having to ask “Abigail who hurt you?”
I have grown so attached to these characters and to see how far Ravenna has fallen to the darkness is heartbreaking. But it goes to show that no matter how dark things may become, there is always light to bring you out of it.
I NEED THE NEXT BOOK IMMEDIATELY
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book broke me. I think I read this in, like, three days, which is impressive since I had to work as well. It took days for me to be able to focus enough on another book because this one occupied my brain so much. My heart and soul were wrecked, and that's not an easy thing to do to me with a book. I'm very much looking forward to the next one in this series.
🕊️🍷💔 The breaking of a hero. The forging of a weapon. Emotional Damage, certainly.
This second book in the Til Kingdom Come series brought a different pace than Rush of Ravens. While RoR was fast paced and twisty, Dawn of Doves was slow and painful (but like in a good way because you FELT with the characters...but also not completely without twists).
I knew after the end of RoR that DoD was going to be rough. But shew. This was like Mockingjay level tragedy, but in the best of ways. I was unprepared for some (okay all) of the twists, and I'm not mad about it. There are so many things I want to happen in this series, but I can't say them here without spoiling. 🤐🤐
Here's what I will say: If you like HIGH STAKES tragic stories that are still filled with hope, this series is for you. It is epic high fantasy with many kingdoms hanging in the balance in the war between light and darkness.
I think we as readers have a tendency to pass on indie authors because we don't think they will be as good as the trad published authors we have read. But let me tell you, DON'T PASS ON ABIGAIL BRIER. Her writing style is beautiful, the world building is rich, and the suspense is killing me🫣. The Til Kingdom Come is every bit as good of a story (not just plot, but the writing and editing) as any trad published series on the best seller list.
Perfect for fans of The Hunger Games & Throne of Glass. I really enjoyed all the character POVs and their individual story progressions along side the main plot! Leith continues to intrigue me...
Emotional whiplash Villains that give King Ahab and Jezebel vibes Devastating to the point of depression Biblical allegories No spice No swearing
This book was a ride for sure. I gave it four stars because the book was literally so depressing at the beginning I didn't know if I would finish the book. The villains actually made me want to kill them. I also still haven't really connected to Ravenna who is the FMC which is really unfortunate, it makes finishing the book that much harder. She is just so darn stubborn and I want to strangle her all the time. Also I think that Xan is a simp and he needs to move on. He is annoying and he won't take a hint. I really hope he doesn't end up with the girl he "loves" and finds something better to obsess over.
BUT LEITH! I absolutey love Leith! He was a surprising favorite and was one of the only characters that got me through this book. I loved his pov's the most. I also really enjoyed Merrick's pov. AND IF ELIAS AND COVE DON'T GET A HAPPY ENDING I WILL DIE!!!
I do wish there was some more happy scenes because it was pretty hard to read through but Abigail did a really good job of still building an underlying foundation of hope that kept you reading until the end. Overall this is a pretty good book and I'm looking forward to finish the series. I would recommend it to people who like high stakes, emotional whiplash and biblical allegories.
I think I like DoD better than RoR tbh! The writing style definitely improved since the first book, and there seemed to be much more character development and structure than the first one! This book series hooked me so much more than I thought, especially since Im *not* a fantasy girlie. but HOLY MOLY I'M OBSESSED!!!!!
Cove is one my favorites, but I loved getting to meet new people and add to the characters I’ve already come to love and root for.
Revanna's internal battle was AMAZING, and I loved the parallelism to Christianity. There was one scene toward the beginning in specific where she has this internal battle with herself that was so beautifully written I could visualize the scene so well. I'm seriously so excited to finish this series.
