The name of Lady Karoleigh Stafford was the mark of one death and the omen of more to come. Her spirit permeated Walesly-Upon-Thames. Full-length portraits of the splendid beauty hung from the walls. Her name was behind every thought. Her ghost inhabited the block tower. Lady Karoleigh Stafford was dead -- but she lived on in the flesh of her nineteen-year-old daughter, a girl who was "more rain than storm, more shadow than substance."
The pall which had fallen over the medieval castle would not be lifted until history repeated itself. The agent of change would be an outsider - another young woman - whose presence would bring the drama to its climax and to its tragic end.
I love romance suspense. Amanda Trent lived in Sir Percy Stafford's estate. She accepted a job to tutor his daughter, Karoleigh. They also had a maid named Battle. She was unfriendly, but very efficient. Their home had a ghost. While working there, Amanda saw the ghost for herself. She had heard about the rumors from Sir Harry Allenwood. He rode with her for a little while in her carriage.
The ghost was actually Karoleigh. She was mentally unstable, and she wanted to pay her father back for killing her mother. She also wanted Amanda to suffer even though she liked her. She did not want her father to ever find true love again. She was very upset that Amanda and her father fell in love. She enjoyed seeing the hurt and anguish on his face believing that a ghost haunted their home.
Karoleigh finally learned the truth in the end, and Battle, their maid tried to kill her. Battle did not appreciate that Karoleigh was tormenting her father in such a cruel way. Karoleigh came to a tragic end. She fell through the same window her mother fell through because Battle was trying to end Karoleigh's madness.
In time, Sir Percy Stafford recovered from losing his wife and his daughter. He loved them both.
I found this at the rental home where my family is vacationing. It is a quick page turner, but I didn't find it particularly satisfying or well written. It doesn't offer enough of the various genres it straddles ie some horror but not enough, some romance but not enough, some old school gothicism but definitely not enough.
I guessed the truth but hoped I was wrong, but I wasn't, more's the pity. Everyone in this book had some sort of brain malfunction, except the h, but then again, if she fell for the H that either makes her just as mentally damaged or just plain STUPID!
Daughter of Darkness was quite a compelling read. Just by reading the back cover, I was hooked. Thinking to myself, "How could they all be the same person? I HAVE to read this and find out!", I awaited anxiously to finish the book I had been reading and start this one. I wasn't disappointed. Although not as complicated as it sounds (the 4-person thing has nothing to do with supernatural powers), it was still good, and definitely worth the read (and wait).
