Ryker Holt was supposed to die that night—a scarred ex-soldier turned Steel Veins enforcer, left for dead in the wreck I dragged him out of. I never expected him to find me again.
But he did.
Now he’s everywhere. Watching from the shadows. Fixing what’s broken. Paying my debts before I even know I owe them. He doesn’t ask permission. Doesn’t take no for an answer.
And when the same men who torched my brother’s garage come for me, Ryker shows me what kind of man I really saved. The kind who kills without blinking. The kind who calls me his.
He says I can leave anytime I want. But the keys are right there on the nightstand— and I’m not walking away.
A standalone dark MC romance featuring a scarred ex-soldier hero, a stubborn mechanic heroine, obsessive protection, forced proximity, and a love that blurs the line between safety and surrender. HEA guaranteed.
This one started well, she pulls him out of a fire and his obsession begins. There is a lot of caretaking in this one and as you would expect from a short story, not a whole lot of protest from the FMC on the new state of affairs.
The writing lacked a bit for me, there were a few passages where a got a bit lost and had to read again. Also, for a novella this has quite a lot of repetition and that time could have been given over to a bit more depth in the motivations/back stories of the main couple.
Tropes: Insta-Love, Stalking, Motorcycle Club, Darkish Romance, Criminal Elements Burnout: A BWWM DARK MC STALKER ROMANCE by Tessa Vane is the first story I have encountered by this author. Goodreads lists this author as having 24 books, so I am not sure how I missed reading anything by her before. Burnout is a quick read, clocking in at 92 pages and is available on Kindle Unlimited. I enjoyed this fast-paced, insta-love story and both characters were likable. Kira is working hard to keep her brother’s garage open after his passing. She pulls long hours, with few customers, and is trying to pay off an exorbitant loan owed by her brother. Even in these trying times, she is focused and gives back to her community. What she doesn’t know is that she has a silent observer. 487 days ago, Kira pulled MC enforcer Ryker from what would have been a fatal wreck. As she showed care and kindness to him, this hard-core biker fell HARD. He has watched and helped her (unobtrusively) since, making her life safer and easier but never stepping out of the shadows. But when danger dares show its face will Kira accept his love and the DANGER that follows HIM? Conclusion: This book is an awesome read; it is well-written and while brief, makes the reader care about the outcome and the relationship being built. I loved how determined Ryker was in his quest to take care of his “woman” and Kira knew a “real” one when he appeared. Final word, well worth the read and I look forward to the next couple in line…Sherita and Jax (I started their story first but realized that they were the second story in a series). Favorite Lines: Some things you can fix. Some things you just learn to live with the scars. "Stay with me. Help's coming. Stay with me." Like it mattered if I stayed. 487 days of watching. One moment of standing in her light. Worth it. How long had he been fixing things I didn't know needed fixing? Monster. Caretaker. Both. Always both. The only thing in my world right now that isn't ash or grief or rage. I move through the warehouse the way I moved through Kandahar—silent, efficient, every step calculated. "Yes." Her arms tighten around me. "And you're mine. Mine to trust. Mine to choose. Mine to love back." Means you're allowed to build something new instead of carrying something dead." https://theretiredreader.com/f/burnou...
This book is a quick read but jam packed. Kira is a mechanic who is trying to keep her deceased brother’s garage doors open. Everything is working against her until one night she saves the life of a MC enforcer Ryker. From that day on she has a guardian angel who hides in the shadows trying to do what he can to make her life easier. He comes out of the shadows when her life is threatened and never returns to his hiding space. I really enjoyed this book. It was an insta love, but with a build up that was believable and felt authentic. It also introduces the next couple in the series and they fit nicely into the story. I’m hooked and ready to read on to the next!
Kira pulls Ryker from a fire, telling him to stay with her. Ryker hasn’t been touched with care like that since his mom’s death when he was 8 years old. He falls in love with her, watches her to keep her safe.
Kira doesn’t know until she is threatened by money collectors and he steps in to save her.
Read the book to find out what happens. It is quite a story between them.
My only issue is the fact that she's forced to leave out her brother's dream. Why have her question herself over something she obviously does not want to do. Normalize living for yourself and not forcing yourself to promises to dead people knowing it's not what you want. She should have been able to live a life of her own instead her dead brother's hopes and dreams for his shop. A shop she obviously did not want.
18 months of watching and protecting. Always in the shadows. What a nice quick read. This is a new author for me and I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. This appears to be book one in a series. I look forward to reading the remainder.
Too short! More details related to their first meeting would have enriched this fateful story of two people that found their soul connection through a bad accident! I found it really touching as they came to see each other as the missing piece in their life!
