Cooking Up Death

Rate this book
Deadly mushrooms in the souffle, toxic leaves in the tea... villains have been killing in culinary ways for as long as there have been knives in kitchens. And when Death dons the chef's hat, your first bite might be your last!

In COOKING UP DEATH, we've whipped up a menu of sixteen cozy mysteries featuring toxic treats and lethal luncheons sure to leave the other characters worrying about the contents of their own plates while the amateur sleuths search for clues.

As a special bonus, each story is accompanied by one of the recipes featured in these pages - the non-lethal version, of course!

Featuring stories by John M Floyd, Annie Reed, Lauryn Christopher, Alan Orloff, Bethany Maines, Abigail Leigh Reed, Debra Henry, S.B. Watson, Wayland Smith, Sally Milliken, Jena Rey, Susan Madon, Melissa Behrend, Sheila Dene' Lawrence, Mary Birk, and Kirlagh James. Edited by Lyn Worthen.

This is such a fun collection of short culinary cozy mystery stories! There are 16 stories that are organized in categories like a cookbook - Appetizers, Entrees, and Desserts. Each story features a food-related crime as well as a corresponding recipe, but as the editor says - the "non-lethal versions." I'm not much of a cook but the recipes sound delicious with clear instructions on how to prepare the dishes. Each story includes background information about it and the author. Throughout the book there are also nice illustrations of some of the poisonous plants that are part of the stories.

The stories are light and fun, and I enjoyed all of them. I did have a few favorites, though, including a story about poisonous mushrooms by Kirlagh James, a catered event turned deadly by Wayland Smith, a community garden committee meeting ending in death written by Abigail Leigh Reed, and a cutthroat cooking competition by Alan Orloff. I would recommend this collection to cozy mystery readers, short mystery story lovers, and especially fans of culinary cozies.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.

Murder most fowl...

This is such a fun collection of short stories all wrapped around food mysteries. And recipes to boot! I haven't tried them all, but I think I must. Hopefully my efforts won't prove as... interesting. :D
