Dodos were strange, flightless ice age birds that became extinct in the 1700s. Awesome illustrations accompany carefully leveled text about food, habitat, life cycle, and threats, bringing dodos to life like never before.
I’ve been fascinated with dodo birds for a while, although I’ll admit I’ve never really done any research on them. I was excited to read this book and learn but it was way too rudimentary. I just couldn’t find anything fun or like-able about this book. It might have been more appealing if it had different illustrations but they were a weird mix of photos and drawings? I didn’t care for it. It was almost cartoonish? It would’ve been great if this book was written similarly to the great auk. I will have to do some searching on amazon and see if there’s a better one out there.
Dodos are slightly fascinating to me - they aren't right up there on my list like dinosaurs or woolly mammoths, but they're interesting. This is a very easy nonfiction book, geared toward kindergarten and first graders. I definitely see the need for this type of book in our collection. Many kids who are obsessed with dinosaurs are too young for the fact-filled books we have that are written for third, fourth, and fifth graders. When my brother was young, a book like this would have been perfect for him. The text is easy and he could have read it himself with the addition of some new vocabulary words. The illustrations are very life-like; the illustration on the cover looked like a photo to me on first inspection. I appreciate the fact that there are book resources listed in the back for further reading; however, one of those books is about a completely different topic (woolly mammoths) and another is a book about how to draw extinct animals. I have said once and will say again that I don't like the consolidated internet resources via facthound. Looking at facthound, there are only three internet resources for this topic and one is very in-depth and not very accessible for children. Aside from those caveats, I'm happy to have this. The Pebble Plus imprint does fill a need we have in our collection.
