So Ordered: An Originalist’s View of the Constitution, the Court, and Our Country

Rate this book
A New York Times BestsellerJustice Samuel A. Alito elaborates on his judicial philosophy and reflects on the roles of the law, the Constitution, and the courts in preserving America’s spirit of liberty.“ So Ordered reveals Justice Samuel Alito as a jurist of rare deeply principled yet resolutely practical.” ―Yuval Levin, author of American Covenant Samuel A. Alito has quietly become one of the most influential Supreme Court justices in recent history. In this surprisingly personal book, he vigorously defends his “originalist” approach to the Constitution, identifies the threats to our liberties, and reflects on faith, the nature of law, and American culture.Twenty years on the high court have given Justice Alito a unique perspective on the country’s fiercest legal and constitutional battles. As America’s culture wars unfolded, one side harnessed the power of the judiciary to impose its agenda, abetted by judges scornful of constitutional constraints and untroubled by doubts about their own infallibility. The response was a legal movement devoted to originalism and textualism, which found its most effective champion in Justice Alito. The battles, of course, are far from over. Free speech and religion, in particular, are frequently under fire. Justice Alito offers a compelling vision of the courts’ role in defending these and other fundamental liberties. In So Ordered, one of our greatest jurists celebrates the complexity and brilliance of the American Constitution.

Over the last few years, I have chosen to read a few books authored by Supreme Court justices, and when Samuel A. Alito, Jr.’s, “So Ordered: An Originalist’s View of The Constitution, The Court, and Our Country,” was released, I dove in. The book is a collection of speeches that he has made within the last decade adapted to book form. He has divided the book into five sections: (1) Originalism and Textualism, (2) The Role of Judges, (3) Religious Liberty, (4) Threats to the Constitution, and (5) The American Experience. I enjoyed some of the sections better than others (the Religious Liberty section was especially good), but it was all readable and informative. I must admit, however, that I enjoyed Amy Coney Barrett’s and Neil Gorsuch’s books better because they described the way the justices work to adjudicate cases. To be fair, Alito’s goal was not to describe the every-day life of a Supreme Court Justice, and he did do an excellent job presenting the nuances involved in Supreme Court decisions. (291 pages)

Many wise insights. A bit repetitive at points, but I suppose that's to be expected. Demonstrates, not surprisingly but happily, a deep understanding of the role of the Court, and a deep respect for limits and freedoms.

Since the book is bult around a series of speeches there is some inherent choppy to the presentations, but many are compelling and give great insight into the workings of a sharp creative legal mind representing 1/9 of the final say in American jurisprudence.
