Well, I can hardly believe I’m doing this and I am a bit gutted but I’m rating this one at 3.5 stars. I can tell by other people’s ratings that I liked books 1 and 2 better than most reviewers and I was very much looking forward to this final part of the trilogy but, in the most part, I felt fairly frustrated reading this.
We rejoin Miller and Livy in New York having ran away from all their woes in London but it’s just a temporary reprieve and they were always going to have to go back to face the music and deal with the situation they left behind. This was part of the problem for me – as this is the final part of the trilogy, I knew we were going to get answers and explanations and I was impatient for the story to ratchet into gear but it kind of dragged it’s heels and the first half was mostly Miller and Livy having sex, falling out a little, Livy giving a bit of her sass and Miller demanding his thing. It felt a bit groundhog day like – very repetitive.
We do, of course, eventually get answers to all those burning questions and I think this panned out pretty much the way I expected with a few surprises along the way but it was mostly as I was predicted and we get a beautiful epilogue too.
I read this over a few days and I swear every time I opened my Kindle, Beyoncé would start strutting her stuff in the dark recesses of my mind belting out ‘Crazy In Love’ because, let’s face it, Livy and especially Miller are more than just a little bit unhinged. Miller seems so far from that self-possessed perfectly imperfect gentleman right back at the beginning of book one – it’s as if his love for Livy has reawakened all his hang ups and triggered a strong possessive and protective side of him that he wasn’t aware of before. He’s definitely the end result of all his past experiences and they are revealed to us in all their horror and my heart bled a little for the young boy that he was, the lost childhood, the lack of love all of which, as awful as it is, has finally led him to Livy the one person that can unlock that barricaded heart and release the sweet man beneath those sharp suits.
Miller’s not the only one who has changed either – Livy seems to have transformed from a sweet naive girl to a passionate, feisty young woman and, when the green eyed monster strikes, she seems to hit the self-destruct button every single time and I was quite shocked and just how rapidly she flew off the handle into a jealous rage. She’s also, like Miller, become very protective and possessive, especially when the full horror of Miller’s past is revealed to her.
So, I did love Miller and Livy’s story even though the first half of this last book dragged on a little for me – Jodi’s writing is, as always, sublime and we’re treated to yet another highly intense and emotional roller coaster of a trilogy. The This Man trilogy was really never going to be an easy act to follow and the problem with being the author of a story which has captured the hearts and minds of millions of adoring fans is that anything that you subsequently publish is always going to be compared and this doesn’t quite match up to Jesse and Ava’s story. It definitely has that same intensity but it didn’t quite capture my heart in the same way.
It’s still a great romance with a fairly convoluted twisted plot with plenty of shocks and reveals along the way but, for me, it could have been a single book and all the sex sadly seemed to act as filler for a few pages instead of adding to the story.
A big shout out must go to Nan – one of THE most wonderful secondary characters I have ever read. She’s so vividly drawn with obvious love and adoration that I feel she must be based on someone the author holds very dear. I can still hear her cackling at the telly in my mind – she’s a true gem and not easily forgotten. A homage, I suspect, to a real person.
So, in summary, a good but not great erotic romance with possibly (can’t believe I’m saying this!) a tad too much sex instead of story but it’s well written and definitely compelling enough for me to keep reading. I enjoyed the first 2 books a lot better than the third but it’s still a satisfying conclusion with a delicious epilogue to put a big goofy grin on your face. I’m still a rabid fan of JEM and I’ll most definitely be reading whatever she comes up with next.

“I love her. I love everything she stands for and I love how much she loves me. It’s more than any of you claim to love me! It’s pure and light. It’s made me feel. It’s made me want more. If any fucker tries to take her away from me, I’ll fucking kill them.”

“There is no you anymore, Olivia…There’s only us.”
I'm his most prized possession. And it's a title I'm thrilled to have. It's also a burden I'm willing to shoulder.
"You are my soul, Olivia Taylor. You are my light. You are my reason to breathe. Don't ever doubt that."
"Only your love will see me through this hell."
Livy is the only good thing that's happened to me, and I have no intention of letting go of her.
I didn't think there was someone out there who was capable of really loving me, I didn't think there was someone out there who defied everything I knew. Then I found Olivia Taylor.Over the series I have also loved watching Livy's character develop. How much love has changed her. The main thing that I noticed in this book was that Livy was even more feisty. She was determined to do anything she could to fight for her love. Livy's fierce passion was sometimes helpful but on some occasions I thought that she was going about things in the wrong way. I feared that she would make things one hundred times worse but there was no stopping her. She was a girl on a mission!
"You are all I see. Day or night, I see only you."
