The Shadow was watching her again. Sophie Diem could not see him. She could not prove he was there.
Sometimes he would approach. On those occasions she tried to run. Running was pointless, though. He would always return. And he would always ask the same question−over and over and over…
Where is Nathan Bethard?
Sophie's boss has skipped town, abandoning their counseling firm. Now a stranger is stalking her. Granted, the man is drop-dead gorgeous, but he is still a stalker. In an attempt to flee him, she seeks a new job...in London.
Surely crossing the Atlantic will be enough to deter her shadow.
USA TODAY bestselling author Maureen A. Miller worked in the software industry for fifteen years. She crawled around plant floors in a hard hat and safety glasses, hooking up computers to behemoth manufacturing machines. The job required extensive travel. The best form of escapism during those lengthy airport layovers became writing.
Maureen’s first novel, Widow's TALE, earned her a Golden Heart nomination in Romantic Suspense. After that, she became hooked on the genre. As hooked as she was, childhood fantasies still danced around in her head––little voices calling for her to write the young adult science fiction BEYOND series. To her, it was still romantic suspense…just on another planet!
Maureen is a wife. A mother of a crazy Corgi. A lover of mozzarella. And she truly believes there is a portal to outer space somewhere in her house.
This is the first Maureen Miller book I've read, and I downloaded it as a result of seeing it on offer on a goodreads group site.
It was tough at the beginning of the book to see how this story would turn out to be categorized as Romantic Suspense, but I'm glad I stuck with it to the end. At some point, I was unable to put it down.
The heroine has lost her investment and her job in a counseling center she helped to fund when her senior partner disappeared without a word. Suddenly, there is a man who seems to be stalking her, asking where the man is, as if she is supposed to know his whereabouts.
Because I don't like spoilers in reviews, I will not summarize the story. I will just say that this was a different kind of romantic suspense and it takes a while to sort out who are the good, the bad, and the neutral characters. I enjoyed reading this first book in a new series by this author and I hope to read the sequel, MIST. SHADOW, however, is not a cliff hanger. All the books are presented as stand-alone reads.
The one thing that kept this book from rating 5 stars from me was the author's vocabulary choices in several instances. Perhaps they are familiar to many other readers, but I had trouble with expressions like a door emitting people, and tread used as past tense, for example. I won't belabor the point here, but there were more expressions that threw me as I read this book.
Having said this, again I do recommend you try SHADOW; it is certainly no cookie cutter kind of suspense story, and I liked the protagonists and the character named Sam very much!
A new stalker is in town This is the story about Sophie and her journey with a stalker. What impressed me the most was that the book wasn't what I thought at the beginning and that is amazing. I love stalker books, I like how the authors get to develop the stories and this book is like no other. There is a stalker, but the way everything happens is well developed. This book had me smiling in a lot of parts, and even when that's easy while I read a book I never expected for that in this one. Sophie is a woman that knows what she wants and now she has landed and great job with a great boss. Yes, lots of things happen to her, but the way they get tied is really good and I was able to enjoy it. The plot is well developed and I am happy I've found this author. I'm looking forward to read more about her. Oh, that epilogue... OMG, what an amazing way to keep true to the story! Details are given and I could feel a perfect ending for an amazing book.
I always enjoy reading Maureen A. Miller's books and this one is no exception. 'Shadow' is a great start to a new series. 'Mist' is the second book in the series and I've already added it to my Kindle.
Mixed feelings about this one, because I did like it. There were just also some things about it that I wasn't the biggest fan of. Still a good book though. Suspenseful, and there wasn't any stupid drama involved after our MCs start heading towards each other.
I don't believe I'll be continuing the series, but don't let that deter you from giving it a try. There was mystery, there was romance. Danger and suspense, with a couple of more lighthearted moments thrown in. Give it a shot and see what you think.
And if you wish to see me nitpick at certain things (both what I liked and what I didn't like)... see below. But all in all, I'd say this is more a 3.5 or 3.75 in my opinion.
At first I can honestly say I could not figure out what I thought about this book and at one point I almost put it down but I promised to read it for an honest review so I told myself a few more pages and boy was it worth it. Once I started figuring things out in my mind and realized The Shadow was now a bad person I started to enjoy the book more because I wanted to figure out what the guy he was looking for did and the more I read I started to put some things together so then I wanted to read more of the book to see of I was right. I loved the interaction between the characters in the book and the dialogue with Sam was priceless. I honestly think he was my favorite character because some of his lines just cracked me up. The sexual tension with Sophie and The Shadow were off the charts and that added another demension to the story. Overall, the book had it all: romance, suspense and humour. I am very glad I stuck with the book and would recommend it. I can't wait for the second in the series.
Just an additional note for those readers who might be interested in this book. It has been mislabeled as MM Romance. It is NOT that type of book It is a great romantic suspense story.
Shadow by Maureen A. Miller is the first book in her Blue-Link series and a first time read of this author's books. I enjoyed every minute of reading it and couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out what was going to happen next.
Sophie and Glenn are complex characters; but I liked them both and Glenn's backstory broke my heart. The secondary characters were integral to the story. I loved Samuel with his easy going attitude and genuine caring about "his" tenants at the Marquis. The secondary character that intrigued me the most is Amanda Newsome, the CEO of Blue-Link. She was probably the most complex of all of the characters and I would love to know more about her.
Smoothly paced plot with lots of twists and the action at the end as all the pieces fell into place made for a very enjoyable read. I already have book #2, MIST, preorder and waiting impatiently for it to be released.
The blurb made absolutely no sense to me at all, and really had to get my head around the idea that a stalkerish guy (who's quite creepy in the beginning) is actually the hero-protagonist of the book. Things changed a quarter way through, when Glenn's tragic story eventually unravelled through Maureen A Miller's stylish, atmospheric and metaphor-laden writing that made this almost a noir-adventure tale. I loved so many things about this short book: the struggle and the torment that Glenn faced, how he clawed his way back to the light with Sophie's help and Sophie's eventual dependence on him.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: Audio book review. In SHADOW, by Maureen A. Miller, wonderful layers of mystery stack up as the reader dives deeper into the story. As one mystery unfolds, another comes to light; questions get answered, but new ones arise to keep reader curiosity fully piqued.
But it’s not just the mystery element that will keep readers reading (or reading with their ears, like me). Miller has all the right pieces for an engaging story: suspense, danger, romance, and even international travel. But for me, it is the characters that make the story work.
“Her age was just an exclamation point on a wasted decade.”
It is a nice change of pace that the protagonist, Sophie, is in her early thirties. Like many women in that age range, she is grappling with the decisions she’s made, where she is now, and what she’s done with her life. She knows it’s time for a change, and the presence of a stalker is the final straw for her to get out of Dodge. Sophie is complex, and readers may be quick to judge her actions regarding the stalker unless they put credence in the power of women’s intuition and instinct. (I do.)
By providing dual points-of-view, Miller gives readers the other side of the story – Glenn is not a stalker, he’s a desperate and broken man searching for answers. Hearing Glenn’s thoughts and feelings completely switched how I felt about him, and his motives became understandable. Glenn’s is an equally complex character, and his struggle to find himself worthy of love or happiness is palpable.
What’s going on with Sophie and Glenn gets heavy, as is the building sexual tension between them, so the scenes including the characters of Amanda and Sam are excellent distractions. Amanda is the elegant and enigmatic boss of Blue-Link, Sophie’s London-based employer. I feel like there’s something more to her than we’re allowed to see in SHADOW, and honestly, this piece is a major driver for my wanting to read the next book in the series. On the opposite side of the spectrum is the character of Sam, who provides what Sophie -- and readers -- need: a lovable, quirky, comical, steadfast friend and protector. He’s really Sophie’s hero, too.
Odd as it may seem, bad guy Nathan really isn’t much of a thing. He is a presence because he’s wrecked so many lives, but there isn’t much build-up and it’s a bit anti-climactic when he makes his inevitable appearance. Sam is the scene-stealer there, but I fear he won’t be a recurring character based on the ending of the story.
The ending does bring about a satisfying resolution, but I am not sure about the direction of the series and whether the same characters will continue to be featured. I can’t see how Sophie’s and Glenn’s stories would have anything left beyond romance and the challenges of a new relationship, but there’s something about the Blue-Link company…
There are some minor plot holes, a few places that behaviors/reactions didn’t seem reasonable, and some bits of peculiar dialogue (including some F-bombs that seemed unnecessary and incongruous with the character). But overall, I recommend the audio book of SHADOW as an entertaining escape into an intriguing story line. Listening to it was time well spent.
ABOUT THE NARRATION: This is the second book I’ve heard narrated by Brandy Skelly, and I am happy that her delivery was much more consistent and cleaner than last time. I listened to the book at regular speed, which is a rarity, but Skelly’s pacing was just right. Her voicing of characters, male and female, was good and she made it easy to distinguish them. And while Sam’s British accent worked, Amanda’s was less authentic. Even so, by book’s end, I had adapted and accepted it as her voice. Technically speaking, this was a much better recording than the last of Miller’s books I listened to; however, there was a sizable glitch about an hour in that had a long stutter and then several seconds of silence.
Thank you to the author and Audiobookworm Promotions for providing me an audio download in exchange for my honest opinion – the only kind I give. This full review and more special features on Hall Ways.
One man on the run. One man looking for answers. One woman trapped between the both of them, shadowed by the consequences of their actions. What would you do if you had someone following you everywhere? Not showing themselves, only staying in the shadows, asking the same thing over and over? Would you think him dangerous? Would you think him psychotic? Would tall, dark and handsome fall into any of those categories? Miller has spun a story around a mystery that takes place within the States, but ends all the way across the Atlantic.
Sophie Diem worked at a counseling firm until two months ago, her boss up and disappearing without a trace. That is right around the time that she obtained a permanent shadow affixed to her ankles, one without a name or a face—at first. Always approaching her and asking odd questions about the whereabouts of her employer, she was frightened to engage in any conversation with him. Coming back time and time again, Sophie’s bravado strengthening as time passed, until his persistence was unavoidable. A burned down storage facility of hers, objects in her apartment moved around, and a major accident landing her in the hospital with a head injury. Finding that her fright is lessening, Sophie finally succumbs to curiosity. Would this man’s tale be worth the fear, the anger, and the irrational thoughts about who he is? Would this man have a good reason for following her all the way to London? More importantly, thinking through her past conversations with her previous boss, can she have more information than she originally knew about? Uncovering secrets can be a dangerous game and Sophie has just started playing.
Miller’s story-line is good and has the ability to be a great story; however, there is an over-indulgence of detail. By over-indulgence, this terminology for the story is referring to “excess adjectives to describe scenes, people and places over the expanse of the story”. The pace is fairly slow and the character development has been well-thought out. Since this review is assessing the audiobook, Skelly’s vocal relay could not have been any farther from the mark. Unfortunately, this narrator did not speak in proper accents, nor did she provide adequate pronunciations for various word choices used throughout the story. Choosing a narrator that fits the “feel” and has the knowledge of terminology within the story is paramount because these factors can make or break the story. This is the first installment within the Blue-Link Series. If you are a reader of Romantic Suspense, you find reading this book of interest to you.
An audiobook was provided to Turning Another Page by Audiobookworm Promotions and in no way affects the honesty of this review. We provide a three-star rating to Shadow by Maureen A Miller.
MY RATING GUIDE: 3.5-4 Stars. This is a fairly new-to-me author. I am enjoying her books, particularly because there are less detailed intimacy scenes & more action/adventure/mystery content than many other Romance Suspense books I run across today. It’s a refreshing change. (Note: Goodreads has this marked as a MM Romance - MaleMale?- which it is not).
1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/fairly good & might or might not read it again; 3.5= I ENJOYED THIS & might read it again; 4= I LIKED IT A LOT & would read it again; 5= I Loved this; it was great! & most likely will read again (I SELDOM give 5 Stars).

Comments ~ 1) Published in 2015, BLUE LINK: SHADOW is book 1 in Maureen A Miller’s Blue Link series. I previously read BLUE LINK: GOLD and decided to return and read bk1 where it all begins. (FYI. GOLD, bk4 can be read as a standalone title with no difficulty). I have previously read & enjoyed other books by Maureen A Miller: Jungle of Deceit, Jungle Agenda, Widow’s Tale and Endless Night. 2) SHADOW is an Enemies to More trope novel with a definite sense of fear and danger between the 2 MCs. At times I wondered if they would ever trust the other enough to communicate clearly, to understand each other’s agendas and points of view. (Miscommunication is not my favorite conflict device). The suspense kept me reading and I found myself enjoying SHADOW. I will probably check out the next book in this series. 3) I recommend BLUE LINK: SHADOW to readers who enjoy: > Action/Adventure or Suspense Romance novels with settings in wild and remote places. > Novels with minimal angst. > Plenty of action. > Seasoned male and female characters who persevere through life’s obstacles to get to the other side. > Slow Burn Romances with HEAs & minimal/no sexcapades. > (Most) YA readers (See below).
READER CAUTIONS ~ PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used on occasion. VIOLENCE - PG/PG-13. Yes. But not particularly dark or graphic. SEXUAL SITUATIONS - No detailed intimacy scenes.
The concept is very good, but it's a little on the slow side. A stalker who remains in the Shadows, a Counseller who has mysteriously disappeared and his assistant who is left to pick up the pieces.
Glenn (the stalker) is looking for answers and the person who can give him the answers has disappeared. The next best person is his assistant Sophie. She is doing her best to tie up the loose ends of the business, but Glenn is convinced that she can answer his questions, therefore he starts following her and she calls him the Shadow for obvious reasons. At the begenning he appears to be a nuisance, but as the story develops she starts to believe him. Nevertheless she applies for a job in the UK and surprise, surprise, he follows her, always remaining in the Shadows.
It's slow going a and it's not until towards the end that he reveals his purpose which is shocking. He just wants justice for his daughter and the mysterious Nathan is nowhere to be found, although he has left a trail behind him. Will Glenn get his answers? Will Sophie look upon him differently? Will they find Nathan?
They end up working together on what has become his mission and they come to an agreement. To me, it takes ages before the story gets going, but when it does, it hits the ground running. Feelings get involved whilst they work together and the romance is quite touching. It's about time as they have been going back and forth with various sentiments. The epilogue wraps it up beautifully and they get their HEA. It's a slow start that speeds up once all the facts come to light.
Psychologist Sophie Dean is left to clean ip after her business partner disappears with all of their money. While she refers patients to other counselors and cleans out the office, she is constantly approached by a man asking for her former partner, Nathan. Regardless of her insistence that she has no clue what has become of Nathan, the man has become her shadow...he shows up everywhere, asking the same question...where is Nathan. When the only job offer comes from a company in London, for an HR position, Sophie jumps at the chance fir a fresh start. Surely she is safe from the Shadow. When Sophie is hit by a cab, she wakes to find her Shadow, now known as Glen, has been sitting by her bedside for the 3 days that she’s been in the hospital. From her research into her former partner’s patient files, Sophie has deduced that Glen is the father of a patient who had committed suicide 2 yrs ago. Now Sophie and Glen team up to find Nathan. This story was so captivating that I stayed up past bedtime to complete! Who doesn’t like a thriller with quirky characters and some romance? Great HEA. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Sophie's partner has left, taking everything with him. As she is cleaning up messes, referring clients to other places, she is trying to get her own life back on track. But there is a man who has begun to stalk her. He shows up out of nowhere and wants to know where her partner Nathan is. Now taking a job in London to start her life over again, she feels that she is safe from this man. Until she is not! What does he want? Can she help him? I love a good romantic suspense, and this book has it all. Maureen A Miller wrote this romantic suspense with the word thriller involved! It's full of a constant fear of this man until, and the wonder of who he is as well as the wondering what Nathan had done! The character of Sophie has an inner strength, is very smart and wants the truth for all involved, including herself. It's a wonderfully written, slow burn and kept me involved for the entire listen.
Brandy Skelly is a new narrator to me. She was a little young sounding for the characters to me. Her voices were easily distinguishable and her pace is perfect. I did enjoy the suspense and emotional buildup she created while narrating and thought overall it was a good performance.
I very much liked Glenn's Shadow character. A desperate father, looking for anyone who can give him the answers to his question..why? And I liked Sophie:s spunk & determination against car accident, shadow stalking, fear of her firmer boss. And I loved Sam, the silly apartment manager of sorts. He took his job seriously. The first half of book was great! Then the sex came and came and came. The two couldn't do anything for the actual sex scenes & sexual thoughts. The remainder of the plot took one chapter basically. And was typical..Nathan grabs Sophie, Glenn stops him. Only Sam's character & actions thrown in gave the end some humor & an emotional tug. I dobt if I'll read any more by this author, though I read so many books I can't keep them straight. If the book had bern without pirn, I would have enjoyed it so much more! This was a free ebook from Amazon, through www.Bookbub.com.
Her shadow is more a savior instead of a menace...
Sophia has a stalker she refers to as a shadow who starts out making her nervous until she is "accidentally" hit by a cab in London. Glenn is her shadow who wants answers from her ex-partner regarding his deceased daughter. Can he protect Sophie from Nathan before he reaches her?
A story of murder, suspense and mystery of a man trying to find justice for dead daughter and keep the woman he falls in love with safe.
## There is no suspense to speak of. This guy is stalking her and she just lets him. He shows up at her house, her office, even follows her to another country, harassing her and she doesn't seek help. She has many opportunities to go to the police, she has even found out his name, yet she doesn't because he's handsome? Say what? It was beyond frustrating that he never explains himself. He's secretive and vague and she just puts up with it. One conversation would've shed light on the whole situation! It's just pathetic.
I was going to rate as 4 stars but when I started to write the review, it was the irritations that came to mind.
It annoyed me that "The Shadow" (Glenn) spent so much time stalking her - "I don't know where he is", "I believe you... Where is Nathan?"
Also, when she was in hospital, the nurse came to her bed from another patient, reached out her gloved hand (not fresh) and introduced herself as "Doctor". It would have been easy to say "the staff member". Sounds kind of sexist as written.
I know that these comments sound picky but they sum up my impression of the book.
I really like this author, but this book shocked me with its profanity and sexual content. I skipped many pages to avoid that feeling of shame from listening to sex scenes. I didn’t actually finish. I stopped at 90%.
The main character is stalked by an intimidating man who only wants to know what she knows about a co-worker that went missing. He scares her and she doesn’t know anything to tell him.
She accepts a job out of the country to get away from him. But trouble follows her to England.
Sophie has a man following her, he is always in the shadows. He always has only one question to ask her and she doesn't know the answer. Her boss didnt show up and took off owing her and others money. She closed up the office . Things got more sttange when the man in the shadows kept her where he went. Glenn Barber lost his daughter to death but why ? I wont ruin this except to say love, suspense and justice. Good trad
This book is an interesting mix of mystery and romance. Starts off strong with mystery, dives deeply into romance, then back to mystery and finally wrapped up with romance.
It was well written and told a story which would certainly pull the reader in. One could guess at some of the links bringing the story together, but the author did a good job allowing you to see the story in your mind as you unraveled the various inputs to the story.
Yet another book that's taken me by surprise...it seemed as if there was a twist around every corner. I absolutely loved the characters, and Miller is a fantastic storyteller. She carefully laid out the clues to the twists, but not enough to actually reveal them before she did. It made them believable and really well done.
Enjoyable read. I don’t condone a girl falling for her “stalker” but he isn’t a real stalker...just a grieving father. I feel if he would have come out and been honest then the whole stalker bit would have been unnecessary. But it’s a story and it had to have some mystery and intrigue.
O enjoyed this book because of the had a good story line, but the romantic patronage of longer than I would have liked. I loved the other side of story in this book!😀😀
I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys stories that are funny, suspenseful, and romantic with strong characters both male and female, and a nice happily ever after.
SOPHIA MAY BE AFRAID OF HER STALKER BUT SHE’S ALSO CURIOUS ABOUT HIM. INTERESTING. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS, IT WASN’T WHAT I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE, TURNED OUT TO BE A VERY GOOD SUSPENSE & ROMANTIC STORY, LOVED IT. ;D
This book had everything. Romance, suspense and tense moments. I really liked how all the characters were developed. The story line was great. Will read more from this author!
Great story. Very intriguing, nice semi mystery, and excellent suspense. My only issue was that it was fade to black sex scenes. Won't be picking up the other books but it was a nice way to spend some time. P.S. Sam is the greatest landlord.
This is my first book from this author and I really enjoyed it. It had interesting characters with flaws that make them human and interesting. The action was well-paced and kept me reading. I will read more from her. Dianne McCartney Author of Dark Vengeance and others
