A vulnerable target. A mysterious discrepancy. An unforeseen love.
After the exposure of her deceased husband's criminal activity, CPA Hailey Nieland struggles to move on with life as a single mother raising a hearing-impaired toddler in a hostile small town. When she gains a major client, she hopes the extra income will be just what they need . . . until she begins finding anomalies in the accounts.
No one should trust their life to a bodyguard who can't protect himself, much less his client. At least, that's what Peter Lewis believes after his failed mission. But leaving his former career behind is much harder than he expected--especially when someone begins targeting an accountant who works in the office building he's now responsible for. As threats against her escalate, Peter and Hailey must work together to overcome their fears and expose a complex cover-up before she becomes the next victim.
Parable bestselling author Angela Carlisle delivers edge-of-your-seat romantic suspense featuring a single mother, a bodyguard seeking redemption, financial intrigue, and a small-town setting for readers who enjoy high stakes and nonstop action.
Silent Menace by Angela Carlisle Book 3 in The Secrets of Kincaid Series 3.5 to 4 Stars
Angela's series has certainly kept my interest through the end! Hailey was a strong and relatable character as she tries to rebuilt her life and protect her daughter after the fallout from her late husband's crimes. Peter was a protective hero, former bodyguard, who tries to keep her safe.
Hailey is a CPA and her daughter is hearing-impaired, so we saw ASL rep in this story and I loved that represented. She finds anomalies in the accounts for a major client.
Threats to Hailey increase and Peter and Hailey work together to stay safe and expose a complex cover-up before she becomes the next victim.
High suspense, lots of threats and mystery of who was targeting Hailey. Lighter romance and faith bits.
While this can technically be read as a standalone, I definitely recommend reading the earlier books first to fully appreciate the character connections and backstories.
If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense with protective heroes, small-town settings, faith themes, and edge-of-your-seat action, this series is one I would recommend.
Books 1 & 2 are my favorites of the series as I connected to those characters a bit more and liked the storylines more, but glad to have finished the series. I think I wanted more romance and connection with Hailey and Peter personally, but enjoyed it.
I did pre-order a copy but had a e-book copy from NetGalley. Thank you to the publisher for the NetGalley copy. All thoughts are my own.
Trigger/Content Warnings: No spice or language. Past death of spouse, PTSD, some violence and injuries.
I'm kind of sad because I can't figure out how on earth we'll get another book in this series, and I want one!
I swear, what this woman does with characters is brilliant. She doesn't pull punches... not even a bit. Our characters get into difficult circumstances and do not come out unscathed. They make mistakes, they make solid decisions that still don't work sometimes. Their personalities are crazy consistent--even when they act a bit out of character, it's still consistent with who they are.
I didn't "get" the obsession with it having to be the husband's crimes behind everything. I can see why it might be a first thought, but she's too smart to hold onto that idea for so long. That's it. The only flaw I can recall at all. And in the end, it kind of worked.
This has been such a fun series and I am sorry to see it come to an end. The finale however was so so good! We get Hailey’s story after meeting her in the earlier books, and it was well worth the wait. The mystery elements kept me guessing and I loved seeing another familiar face from the first book in this series. The story was fast paced and I felt for Hailey as she fought the danger while trying to keep her small daughter safe. Angela has firmly cemented herself on my list of must read Christian Fiction Romantic Suspense authors and I am excited for what she writes next!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
This third addition to The Secrets of Kincaid series proves to be just as well-written and unputdownable as the first two books! A perfect blend of high-stakes peril, budding romance, and inspiring faith kept me reading late into the night. Compelling, relatable characters drew me into their world and kept me invested in the outcome. I love Peter and Hailey's strength and courage, despite their personal misgivings, and admire the personal and spiritual growth they both experience. I thoroughly enjoyed this exciting, satisfying read and highly recommend it and the series. Note: Although there are carry over characters, this book can easily be read as a standalone. I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers through Interviews and Reviews via NetGalley with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Silent Menace is another awesome, un-put-downable, Christian romantic suspense book from Angela Carlisle. I've loved all the books in this series. As with the other two, there is on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspense, along with awesome twists, sweet romance, and lives being lived out for the Lord.
As I like to do, I will warn you, if you are like me and don't like relationship spoilers, make sure to read the first two books before starting this book. And also, there will be some mentions in my review that could be spoilerish for the first two books, so you may want to wait to read my review until after you read those books.
You've been warned.
I loved revisiting the small town of Kincaid and getting reacquainted with old friends. Both of the main characters in this book were introduced previously. I admit I didn't realize that I'd met the MMC before, seeing as it has been a while since I read book one, Secondary Target. Let's just say, I was glad to meet up with Peter again and get to know him better. Plus we had met the FMC, Hailey, previously and she is related to some of the other characters.
Poor Hailey has been dealing with a lot since her husband died, leaving her a single mother trying to make a living as a CPA in a town that she feels doesn't trust her or want her around anymore because of her husband's illegal dealings. She meets Peter, who is working as a security guard in the building where she works, after her car is vandalized and she goes to him for help. What neither of them realize is the connection that each of them have to people the other knows. Which I thought was sort of cool, and couldn't wait for the realization to hit.
Hailey ends up in charge of an important company's finances after the previous CPA passes away. She doesn't realize this prestigious account is going to cause her so much trouble. The danger gets more and more intense as the story progresses, making it clear to both Hailey and Peter that her life is in danger. And Hailey doesn't just have herself to worry about as she also fears that her daughter Jenna will end up in the line of fire.
Will they be able to figure out exactly who has her in the crosshairs before it is too late? Will they realize why someone (or is it multiple "someones") is after her?
As the reader we have a bit of knowledge right from the prologue, though it isn't quite clear who exactly is attacking her because there are other suspects and I definitely had some suspicions about a certain co-worker. I will admit, when the truth came out, it wasn't quite what I was expecting.
I absolutely loved getting caught up with Corina and Bryce, and Allye and Eric. Getting to see how there lives are going. I loved that they were a part of the story as opposed to just having a small mention.
And I loved seeing the characters leaning on the Lord and being in prayer and seeking His will. Loved seeing them work through what they are dealing with with His help.
So, yes, I absolutely LOVED this story and highly recommend it. While the story itself is standalone as is each of the other books, and there are no cliffhangers or anything, knowing what happened in each of the previous books really does help you understand what is happening in this book and makes things more meaningful.
I received an ARC of this book as a member of the launch team and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.
“I’ve never met a woman like you, Hailey Nieland.” “That’s probably a good thing.” “You saved my life. Thank you.” “And you saved mine. I’d say call it even, but I think I still owe you a few.”
This unputdownable book is filled with suspense, danger, faith, family, and a sweet new romance. It has a British bodyguard, a single mom, and a precious deaf toddler. I was drawn in from the very start. I read the book in two afternoons because I had to know what happened.
Hailey is intelligent, brave, and a loving mother. Her strength and courage as she and Peter faced peril after peril was incredible. I loved her growth and how important her faith was to her. I loved seeing her amazing parents and cousins support her too. I loved that she was quick to trust Peter and accepted his help and protection graciously. I loved their friendship and slow, sweet romance. I loved that they supported and encouraged one another. Peter is kind, protective, and British. He battles feelings of guilt, doubts his instincts, and has some PTSD after an on the job accident. I loved his growth and how he was able to help Hailey and protect her despite his insecurities. I loved when Hailey and Peter interacted with Jenna together. But it was so precious how gentle and caring Peter was with her. I absolutely adored little Jenna.
A few more quotes: “Thanks for taking care of me.” “As long as I’ve got breath in my lungs, you can count on me for that.” “That means a lot. I hope you know that.” “I only wish I could take all your troubles.” “That would be a task for my heavenly Father.” “And he and I have been having quite a few talks on the subject lately.”
“You are anything but secondhand, and I mean that with all my heart. Please don’t think of yourself like that.”
“What are you doing?” “You’re in no shape to walk anymore.” “And you’re still recuperating from a concussion.” “I’m not using my head to carry you.” “I can see that.”
Note: This is book three in the series. It can be read as a standalone but there could be small spoilers for the previous books.
This book was provided by the author and the publisher @BethanyHouseFiction. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.
(I received a complimentary copy of this title through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.)
I love no-spice romantic suspense, so I’m always on the lookout for new-to-me authors in this genre. This is the first book I’ve ever read by Angela Carlisle, and I loved it!
Characters and references to the previous books are throughout this book, so I’d recommend reading the series in order. That being said, I read this as a stand-alone and still was able to follow and enjoy the story.
I loved the ASL rep. This story had so many elements, so many twists and turns, and lots of suspense. I had my suspicions throughout the story, but so many things weren’t quite what they seemed! There are light faith elements in this story as well.
I really enjoyed this book. I know you will enjoy it too if you love this genre!
Now I’m excited to go back and read the previous books in this series!
This is the third book in the Secrets of Kincaid series, and while it did seem quite a bit shorter than the last 2 books, it was still packed full of action and suspense. It was fun to get cameos of characters from the other books. And I really enjoyed the ASL rep in this story. The love interest’s relationship with the main character’s deaf daughter was so precious. If you enjoy good romantic suspense, this is not a series to miss!
Content Notes: No spice or language. Trigger warning for past death of spouse, PTSD, and some violence and injuries.
Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for sending me a copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions above are my own.
This series has made me an Angela Carlisle fan for life. I loved the first two books, and Silent Menace was a perfect end and worthy addition to this series. I loved that Peter was brought back to be the main character in this story. He intrigued me so much in book 1 it was so rewarding to finally learn all about him. It broke my heart how he didn’t trust himself to protect Hailey, but I loved the healing he finds in these pages. Hailey is so easy to root for. She got dealt a rough hand with her first husband’s crimes and death, but she’s moving on and making a way for her and her sweet daughter Jenna- who absolutely steals the show. There is a sweet moment between Jenna and Peter that will forever be etched on your heart!
I loved how Hailey and Peter slowly became friends and built on their relationship- neither quite ready, but willing to ease into friends, to more. They cared more about one another’s hearts (and safety) and it made me care so much about them individually and together.
Now about the suspense… so good. Stephania is the SKETCHIEST but I never expected where her story ends up! It kept me guessing and turning pages in all the best ways, and I loved how everything concluded.
I received a complementary copy of this book from the author and publisher. I was not asked to leave a positive review. My opinions are my own.
Silent Menace gives readers a fantastic suspense story filled with plot twists galore. Hailey Nieland struggles at work taking on new cases as a CPA. But when the numbers don't add up, the threats roll in. And security guard Peter Lewis steps in as her protector.
I loved this entire series, and some of the characters from books 1 and 2 make appearances (although this can be read as a standalone.) This story has everything I love: main characters on the run, a hero ready to overcome his past mistakes to step up when it counts, a complex crime, and heartwarming (and sometimes quirky) characters. The story has plenty of plot twists and having the story revolve around corporate crimes is a nice change of pace from your typical romantic suspense stories.
I highly recommend the entire series if you are a fan of romantic suspense.
I received an ebook review copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own
SILENT MENACE by Angela Carlisle is the phenomenal, suspenseful story of Hailey Nieland, CPA at Pendleton Accounting, and Peter Lewis, night guard for the building Hailey works in. Once strangers, they find themselves working together to keep Hailey and her young daughter safe while trying to figure out why someone considers Hailey a threat. How far will someone go to eliminate that threat?
Hailey is trying to forge a new life after the death of her husband and the scandal he left behind. While trying to make restitution for things she had no knowledge of, she still feels on the outside of their close-knit community. Her plans of being a staying home mom were upended. She’s now a full-time CPA and thankful for her parent’s help. Now, it seems someone is determined she leave her hometown. She’s determined not to leave, but she must also consider her daughter’s safety.
Peter suffers from PTSD from his last bodyguard job – an assignment he feels he failed at. Deciding to step away from that profession, he takes on what he thought would be a safe and easy guard duty job. Witnessing someone dangerously messing with Hailey, he knows he has to step in and help her – especially when things escalate to physical attacks on them both. Dare he trust himself not to fail someone else?
Hailey and Peter seem to have an immediate rapport, but neither is ready for a deep relationship. She is working through being a widow, single mother, working full time and dealing with the fall-out from her husband’s illegal activities. He knows he has to get his head straight first because he won’t burden anyone with this fear of failing again. Is it possible that they can develop a friendship where each helps the other?
Can Hailey and Peter figure out who and why someone is determined that Hailey leave town – or else? When the threats turn from warnings to attempts on Hailey’s life, will Peter get over his fears and do the job he’s so well trained for and keep her safe? When the FBI become involved will it help their situation or will it escalate the threats?
SILENT MENACE is an astonishing, edge-of-your-seat story that will have you quickly turning pages while never wanting the story to end. The budding romance between Hailey and Peter as they work through their past issues will have you hoping for a happily-ever-after while sweet little Wesley weaves herself into Peter’s heart. Angela Carlisle gives us a story of mystery, danger, family, suspense, hope, forgiveness, starting over and romance while weaving it with a wonderful thread of faith. SILENT MENACE is absolutely a FIVE-STAR book that I highly recommend to everyone!
While SILENT MENACE is the third book in The Secrets of Kincaid series, it can most definitely be read as a standalone book.
I received an ARC of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own. #SilentMenace #TheSecretsofKincaid #AngelaCarlisle #BHPFiction
I have so loved Angela Carlisle’s Secrets of Kincaid series, looking forward to the release of each new book, so I eagerly cracked open Silent Menace… and I was immediately hooked. Not only by the mystery & suspense elements that begin in the prologue and remain steady throughout, but also by the main characters.
Hailey Nieland, a CPA who just inherited some of her late colleague’s accounts, is still figuring out how to live in Kincaid after her deceased husband’s crimes against the town, sure that everyone would rather she and her ADORABLE toddler Jenna (who is profoundly deaf) would find somewhere else to live. Each of these layers makes Hailey’s story arc so compelling and adds a few more tangles to the suspense threads as well. I loved the interaction between Hailey and her daughter – one scene in particular that showcases Jenna’s so-cute feisty side had me laughing out loud along with Hailey – but I especially loved the interaction between Jenna and Peter. Melt. My. Heart. He’s so great with her. Plus, he’s British which makes everything more swoony. And if Peter’s name triggered something in your memory bank… yes! He was the bodyguard in book one. An important aspect to his character because, as it turns out, at least one person in Kincaid does want Hailey to skip town and what starts as ‘harmless’ intimidation tactics quickly escalates to the more dangerous variety. His journey provides a different set of layers that play just as key a role in the depth & tension of the plot as Hailey’s do, and I enjoyed watching him get all protective as he tries to keep her safe.
Bottom Line: If you’re dealing with discrepancies in the financial accounts you’re monitoring (aka dreaded math)… if your life is in ever-increasing danger from unknown sources for unknown reasons… if you need a safe space to land amid the fallout from your late husband’s crimes… then it helps to have a swoony British bodyguard as your ally. And that’s exactly what Hailey Nieland has in Peter Lewis throughout Silent Menace by Angela Carlisle. As these two very-likable characters dodge all manner of attempts to silence Hailey, their sweet friendship that gradually develops into more provides the perfect respite in this life-or-death storm that intensifies with every chapter. I loved spending time with them, as well as Hailey’s precious little girl (who completely stole my heart), and I appreciated their personal & spiritual growth threads. I’ve really enjoyed both previous books in this series – they each kept me on the edge of my seat – but I think Silent Menace is my favorite. It would be a great next read for fans of Lynette Eason, Patricia Bradley, or Lynn H. Blackburn!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
Angela Carlisle definitely has another bestseller with this book! This is the third installment of her Secrets of Kincaid series and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. She writes a perfect balance of the intensity of danger that I love while blending emotional and spiritual development of her characters. Her characters are also very relatable. We open this book with CPA Hailey Midland a grieving widow with a hearing impaired toddler Jenna. Her husband has died while leaving his secrets for her to face alone. Then at work one of her co-workers has a heart attack and dies and she receives his account of one of their biggest clients. One night as she leaves work two of her tires are slashed and she meets the security guard on duty Peter Lewis. That's the beginning of the danger she finds herself in. She also discovers that there are anomalies in her new clients books. From slashed tires to someone actually taking shots at her, she is living a life of dodging danger while trying to keep her daughter and family safe. Peter has become a friend to Hailey and becomes very protective of them. He's a security guard now but he is taking a break from his career as a bodyguard. He has had a very bad experience in his last job as a bodyguard and is trying to overcome PTSD. I enjoyed watching Peter and Hailey's romance slowly blossom! This third book was a very satisfying ending to her Secrets of Kincaid series. I would definitely recommend reading this whole series! This is a 5 star read!! I received this Arc through the author Angela Carlisle and through Netgalley I want to thank them both. The opinions and reviews are all my own.
CPA Hailey Nieland has inherited a big account at her accounting firm. As she is going over the books, she finds some disturbing discrepancies. She is conflicted as to what she needs to do. Hailey is still reeling from her husband's death, as well as his betrayal in committing criminal acts and leaving her with the debris field to clean up. She is raising her adorable daughter, Jenna, who is deaf. Jenna adds a lot of joy to an otherwise serious story.
Hailey starts receiving threatening notes, which is how she and Peter Lewis, a security guard in her building, get to know each other.
Peter has his own issues. He is a former bodyguard who lost a client. He has been severely traumatized by these events and does not feel he is capable of protecting anyone. However, he puts aside all of his fears when he realizes this young mother needs someone in her corner and someone to protect her.
Both characters are stronger than they realize. I admired Hailey's tenaciousness and ability to stand up for what is right.
This book is filled with powerful and, at times, traumatic suspense. It seems nowhere is safe for Hailey. Unfortunately for Hailey it is a toss up as to who is responsible for the threats considering the mess her husband made before his death. There are some pretty evil characters in this story that gave me cold chills with their behavior.
This was a wonderful book. I did not realize that it was book 3 in a series until I started it. I will have to go back and read the first two books. I highly recommend it.
Thank you to Bethany House and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Hailey Nieland is trying to put the past behind her and start a new with her deaf daughter and the help of her parents. Her deceased husband's criminal activity case is finally over and she has done many things to prove her innocence and pay back those he had harmed. When she leaves work and finds a threatening message and slashed tires, she wonders if someone else is holding resentment against her even though it's been proven she had no idea what her husband did and was into. Hoping it is a one off, she's ruffled but not going to let this get to her. But as more odd things start happening she knows that someone isn't happy with her and now her life and the life of her daughter is in danger, but why? Peter Lewis thought this security gig would keep him out of the action and moving on from an incident he still struggles with. But when Hailey becomes a target in the parking lot he is supposed to watch over, he knows he has to do something to help. He won't let another person die on his watch and it seems Hailey needs more than watching with those who are after her. After meeting with a high end client whose accounts she handles at the CPA office, Hailey realizes she may know who is after her and why. Working with Peter and the local police, Hailey must do everything to appear as she is working with this client, meanwhile she knows time is against her to prove what she has found. I really enjoyed this last in the Kincaid series and Peter's character as well as many from the other novels making appearances again. Thank you to the author and publisher for the complementary novel, this review is of my own opinion and accord.
I love this check-in when making decisions: Are you making a wise, informed decision or a fear-propelled one?
This is the third book of Angela Carlisle’s debut series, The Secrets of Kincaid, that I’ve enjoyed. I go into each installment knowing that I’ll get the intensity of danger that I love, and that it’ll be perfectly balanced with the emotional and spiritual growth of her characters. Carlisle knows how to make space for healing and faith in her adrenaline-pumping plots. Not only that, Carlisle aptly executes romantic suspense, reminding me of the hope and faith that are present in chaos and darkness.
CPA Hailey Nieland comes to the page as a grieving mom of a hearing-impaired toddler. Her husband has died, leaving her to deal with the aftermath of his secrets. When she spots some anomalies in files she’s examining at work, it leads to a life of dodging danger and learning who to trust. This is where bodyguard Peter Lewis comes in and where his life takes an unexpected redirection, too.
I enjoyed: 💜A flawed MMC who sought redemption and learned to bridle his insecurities 💜Small town setting 💜A differently abled character 💜Nail-biting suspense 💜Second chance romance 💜Growth and redemption arc 💜Spotlight on hope and faith 💜Reminder to not allow fame and shame to be our taskmasters
I hope we get another visit to this small Kentucky town! I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Angela Carlisle has become a must-read romantic suspense author for me, right up there with Irene Hannon, Lynette Eason, Lynn Blackburn and so many more. One of my favourite genres and Carlisle’s intricate plotting and deeply emotional relationships add so much to the edge-of-your-seat suspense. Unputdownable to the nth degree!
And it starts right from the opening scene – a prologue full of intrigue that leaves the reader with so many questions. Or listener in my case – kudos to narrator Amy McFadden for breathing life into these characters and relating their story with the kind of delicious edginess all that action and danger deserve.
We’re quickly brought into Hailey’s point of view with the ominous opening sentence of chapter one, “Something wasn’t right.” Cue the thrills and chills of anticipatory foreshadowing and what unfolds comes very close to romantic suspense perfection!
A hero with a wounded heart, a heroine struggling to come back from the unthinkable and her innocent, vulnerable daughter are the key players in this gripping novel, though there is also a strong cast of secondary characters, both the kind to love and the kind to, well, dislike intensely. Encroaching danger, a perplexing mystery and a slow-burn romance fraught with its own unique tension all combine to make ‘Silent Menace’ a compulsively addictive read.
"SOMETHING WASN’T RIGHT. Hailey Nieland frowned at the spreadsheet on her left computer monitor. She compared it to the statement on the screen to her right. The final numbers came out to the same total on both, but the transactions on the second document didn’t quite match the first. She blew out a frustrated breath."
So begins the third book in the Secrets of Kincaid series. As a single mom, Hailey is juggling lots of roles. When she suddenly has to worry about their safety, she isn't sure where to turn at first. Thankfully Peter happened to be around.
After being a private investigator, being a security guard is a step down for Peter. Yet after facing a traumatic event, he is okay with a sower pace. Yet danger still manages to find him. Can he learn to rely on God and others to help him past the struggles?
This is an enjoyable romantic suspense that is not too intense. The romance is sweet. The characters are compelling. I was glad some of the characters from previous two books made an appearance.
I would recommend reading the whole series in order. (I enjoyed all three books!) Hailey plays a prominent role in the previous book. The titles are connected. But one could read this book separately and still follow along.
I received an advanced copy of this book. I wanted to read and review it. All opinions are my own.
Accountant Hailey Nieland is struggling to balance single motherhood with a demanding job following on the heels of her husband's death and the public scandal that followed him to the grave. As she begins to acquaint herself with a deceased colleague's client files, it becomes abundantly clear that something isn't adding up, leaving Hailey with a quandary of questions.
Security professional Peter Lewis becomes concerned when a woman working inside the building where he is employed finds her tires slashed and a threatening note on her windshield. His protective instincts signal that this is no ordinary prank, but Peter is barely acquainted with Hailey Nieland and is hesitant to intrude any further than necessary. As disturbing incidents against Hailey not only continue but escalate, Peter is pleased when she accepts his assistance, but neither is ready to acknowledge where the growing relationship may or may not advance. What possible motive could there be to ruin Hailey's life? That's the question.
True to its title, this book exhibits a quiet cadence, not really accelerating until mid-point through the narrative. It's then that the puzzle pieces begin to fall in and out of place and that prayers become a primary source of strength. An enjoyable read with solid characters and silent plot twists.
As we reach the conclusion of Angela Carlisle's debut series, I think it's safe to say that she has quite the talent for crafting a fantastic suspense read that will keep readers at the edge of their seat. This one was no exception. I've really come to love bodyguard romance, so that aspect of the story really appealed to me... but in this story, Peter doesn't trust in his abilities to protect anyone after a failed mission. So, while you have that protective MMC that I always go crazy for, I also really loved the vulnerability that we see there that added a lot to the story. Peter and Hailey were both really fantastic characters that I enjoyed getting to know. The romance between them was really sweet, but I do think the suspense took center stage in this story and I found myself looking forward to seeing how everything was going to play out... a satisfying end to this series! If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense, this is certainly one to add to your TBR.
Silent Menace is the third and final book in The Secrets of Kincaid series. While the series is great and I would certainly recommend them all, I do think this could be enjoyed just fine as a standalone as well.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to Bethany House and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
In the third novel of the Secrets of Kincaid series, Angela Carlisle has brought the reader a Christian Romantic Suspense that has it all. CPA Hailey Nieland is trying to move on as her deceased husband's criminal activity and left her caring for her two-year daughter who is hearing impaired. When one of her co-workers is killed, Hailey is put in charge of the company's major client. As she works on the account, she finds discrepancies that require further investigation.
When it appears that her life may be in danger, we met the male lead character, Peter Lewis. Peter believes that he is responsible for the death of the people he was trying to protect. He has left that life to become a security guard in the building that Hailey works in. They meet as a result of her car being vandalized. As the threats against Hailey intensify, Peter become more involved and their friendship grows.
The characters are relatable and it is easy to become invested in the outcome. The rural setting adds to the suspense. Don't miss this edge of your seat romantic suspense novel that is a welcomed edition to the Secrets of Kincaid series.
CPA Hailey Nieland is doing her best to build a life for herself and her daughter after the death of her huband, who embezzled money from the town. She is struggling to make ends meet in a small town, living in the shadow of her late husband's crimes. When a new account comes to her she finds strange discrepencies, but looking into them brings threats. She finds a friend in Peter Lewis, who is a former bodyguard who now works security. Together they work to keep her and her daughter safe, while finding answers.
A suspenseful read, with a thrilling plot, great tension, excellent interaction and character development. I admired Hailey's integrity and strong faith, as well as her courage to stand up to the judgement form those around her. Peter is a man of action, and I liked how he steps up to help Hailey, and bonds with her daughter through ASL.
Overall, a highly engaging read, with a riveting plot that kept me guessing, and characters that I could cheer for all the way through. Strong themes of faith, courage, and a budding new relationship. Highly recommend.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I have enjoyed reading this entire series centered around the little town of Kincaid. While this is book three in the series, they could be read as a stand alone but better to have read the entire series together. That way when some of the characters from the previous books show up, you will know their back story. This one is centered around Hailey who is a young widow with a young daughter who is deaf. When someone slashes her tires she meets the security guard , Peter whose background is in providing personal protection. He took the job as security because he thinks he failed on his last job, now once he gets to know Hailey he feels compelled to step back into the bodyguard position. Why is someone targeting Hailey and her family? Can Peter let go of his past and focus on helping keep Hailey and her daughter safe? This story had me up late at night, tensed up wondering what was going to happen next. I am looking forward to many more books from this author. I want to thank the publisher and Netgalley for an early copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are what I thought of the book.
Struggling to recover from the actions of her late husband, CPA and widowed single mom, Hailey Nieland, is determined to provide for her deaf daughter. But when she finds anomalies on one of her accounts, Hailey ends up in the middle of danger.
Security guard Peter Lewis struggles to leave behind his former career as a body guard after a job gone wrong. When attacks begin on Hailey, he makes it his job to keep her and her daughter safe.
As the stakes get higher and Hailey’s life is on the line, can Peter protect her and solve the case before it’s too late?
My Thoughts:
It is release day for Silent Menace, the 3rd book in the Secrets of Kincaid series, and you guys, if you haven’t read Angela Carlisle’s books yet, you NEED to start immediately!😍
She weaves suspense, romance, and faith together seamlessly, leaving you on the edge of your seat!
This book was full of suspense and overcoming fear! I loved that Peter was the main character in this book and how we got to learn more about his past. One of my favorite parts was seeing how he addressed how much his accident still affected him, but also how he was learning to recover and heal.
Hailey is such a lovable character and I truly felt for her. She was dealt a hard hand, but she carried herself with such grace. I loved how protective she was of her daughter and how she had the support of her family!
I adored how Peter immediately took to Hailey’s daughter and knew ASL! He was such a sweetheart and it made me so happy to watch him interact with her.
If you’re looking for a book full of suspense, faith, and a gentle romance, you will love this book!

What a tightly woven suspenseful novel! CPA Hailey Nieland is struggling - living with her deceased husband's criminal shenanigans over her head, raising her deaf daughter, working full-time to support the two of them - it's a lot! As she gains a reputable client at work - which means more money - she works hard to make sense of convoluted accounts. Security guard Peter Lewis is battling a past that just won't let go - PTSD and a failed mission (in his own eyes) as a bodyguard. So now he's working in an office building hoping to build a new life. When Hailey is targeted at work and Peter sets out to figure out the culprit - suddenly things ratchet to the next level, and they find themselves embroiled in a crazy scheme that is dangerous and sinister. Can they work together to figure out who is behind the menacing plot? I've been eagerly awaiting Book 3 and it didn't disappoint! Grab it today for a suspenseful summer read!

Widow Hailey is terrified when bad things start happening. But the threats are real and put her and her deaf, toddler daughter in more danger. She is confounded when trying to figure out if the danger is coming from a disgruntled co-worker or if it is from a more far-reaching source. Ex-bodyguard and security guard at her building, Peter, comes to her aid. The plot was well-written with likeable main characters, scary bad guys and an interesting problem to solve that was complex and puzzling. Peter was a thoughtful, godly hero with an incident in his past that he worked around in order to protect Hailey. Hailey was determined to provide for her daughter and also to do the right and ethical thing when confronted with shady dealings. For those who like suspense along with romance and a solid faith thread, this is the ideal story. *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Bethany House on behalf of the author and via NetGalley. Single mom, Hailey Nieland, is really good at her job as an accountant; so good that she finds herself caught up in a dangerous and life threatening situation. Someone doesn’t want her to reveal what she has discovered. I loved the fast-paced, action-filled story as Hailey and former bodyguard, Peter Lewis must get to the bottom of who is trying to silence Hailey before its too late.
The twists and turns the story has throughout it kept me engaged from start to finish. I loved that there was more to the story than just escaping perils. Hailey has an adorable deaf toddler and Peter has caring grandparents that you’d love to meet. These characters added depth to the story and made me feel there is even more at stake in keeping Hailey and Peter safe.
If you are a fan of clean romantic suspense this would be a great book for you to read. This is the third book in the Kinkaid series, and while it does have characters from the other two books in it, you can definitely read it as a standalone.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Goodness gracious—Angela Carlisle pulled me in again. SILENT MENACE is a thrilling blend of suspense, mystery, and old-fashioned romance that kept me turning pages nonstop. I literally delayed sitting down to beef stroganoff with my family just to finish one more chapter. Thoughtful, intelligent, and filled with courageous characters facing very real fear, this story delivers on every level.
THE STORY: After uncovering suspicious financial activity tied to a new client, widowed CPA Hailey Nieland becomes the target of escalating threats. With the help of reluctant bodyguard Peter Lewis, she must unravel a dangerous cover-up before she and her young daughter become the next victims.
5 STARS because Carlisle masterfully balances edge-of-your-seat suspense without crossing into excessive violence. The faith journey feels natural and authentic, while the sweet romance adds the perfect touch of warmth amid the danger.
I received an ARC from Bethany House and NetGalley for my honest review.
I enjoyed Secondary Target and Shadowed Witness, so I was excited to read the final installment in the series. Once I started reading Silent Menace, I didn’t want to put it down. The author captured my attention and held it from beginning to end.
When Hailey begins receiving threats, she thinks it’s payback for her late husband’s crimes. But as the danger escalates, she wonders if there is more going on. I love seeing how Peter steps in to help Hailey even while doubting his abilities to keep anyone safe after a previous bodyguard assignment failed. Seeing his vulnerability and how he worked through his self-doubt added depth to his character that I found refreshing. Hailey and Peter make a great team and I loved seeing their budding romance develop. For fans of Christian romantic suspense, this one is a great read.

The Silent Menace by Angela Carlisle is the final installment in the Secrets of Kincaid series, and it’s every bit as suspenseful and gripping as the first two books. Newly widowed Hailey Nieland is juggling single motherhood and the town’s lingering judgment over her late husband’s choices — but when someone begins targeting her, she has no idea who to trust.
Peter Lewis is still carrying the weight of a mistake that cost his last client. He’s stepped away from bodyguard work and into a quieter security job, but he’s the first to notice something is seriously wrong around Hailey. The big question is whether he can trust himself again to protect someone.
I loved Secondary Target and tore through Shadowed Witness in a weekend, so I went into this one with high expectations — and it totally delivered.
