When we think of the apostle Paul, we may imagine him in many places--along the road to Damascus, preaching in a synagogue, speaking on the Areopagus, emerging from a shipwreck, penning letters in a prison cell. About the author

Aiden Wilson Tozer was an American evangelical pastor, speaker, writer, and editor. After coming to Christ at the age of seventeen, Tozer found his way into the Christian & Missionary Alliance denomination where he served for over forty years. In 1950, he was appointed by the denomination's General Council to be the editor of "The Alliance Witness" (now "Alliance Life").

Born into poverty in western Pennsylvania in 1897, Tozer died in May 1963 a self-educated man who had taught himself what he missed in high school and college due to his home situation. Though he wrote many books, two of them, "The Pursuit of God" and "The Knowledge of the Holy" are widely considered to be classics.

A.W. Tozer and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, had seven children, six boys and one girl.

I have not previously read anything by AW Tozer, but I selected this book because I was looking for a meaningful devotional. It delivered on that, though I would normally read something like this in print rather than listen on audiobook.

Each chapter includes a scripture reading, selections from sermons, and a hymn. I really liked this format and found the sermon selections meaningful and thought provoking while being both convicting and encouraging. Each was based on a situation encountered by the apostle Paul and explored what we can learn from his example. Whether considering Paul's past as a persecutor of Christians, his endurance of persecution himself, or his personal journey to be entirely devoted to Christ, each chapter included practical and spiritual advice to take to heart. The one improvement that would have been nice is to have the hymns sung rather than simply read out for the audio version.

Each chapter is about 10 minutes long, so it works well as a daily devotion while taking a walk or something like that. Listening to too many chapters as once didn't really work as well for me, but others may feel differently.

I can see myself returning to this book when I need a good addition to my devotional life.

I’ve listened to another A.W. Tozer audiobook before, so I came into this one with certain expectations. Unfortunately, this one was a very different experience for me.

This audiobook is presented as A.W. Tozer’s work and is edited by James L. Snyder. As I listened, however, it felt much more like an edited compilation of sermons than a cohesive book. The language and presentation sounded far more modern than I expected, and I never quite felt like I was hearing the same timeless voice I had enjoyed in Tozer’s other work.

Much of the book focuses on the life and ministry of the apostle Paul. While Paul is certainly a faithful example for believers, I personally found myself wishing the emphasis pointed more consistently to Christ. Several applications centered on becoming more like Paul, whereas I was hoping for a stronger focus on becoming more like Jesus.

I recognize that this is my personal reaction, and other listeners may appreciate the format and its emphasis on Paul’s ministry. If you enjoy sermon collections or topical studies drawn from Paul’s life, this audiobook may be a good fit for you.

For me, though, this simply wasn’t the Tozer listening experience I had hoped for, which is why I’m giving it three stars.

I really enjoyed this book.

I thought that editorially, this book was well put-together, especially how it was based on his sermons, and not actually a book he wrote first-hand.

As a big Tozer fan (I have read about 6 of his books so far), this book was such a gem to have released now.

Tozer is always a really interesting and deep theological writer, and this book was definitely no different from what I was expecting!

I thought it was really insightful on how the big battle is not to be personal with yourself, but rather against satan.

In summary, I learned a lot about the life of Paul, and felt this book really gave a lot of light to his life, ministry, and legacy.

Definitely check this out if you are into theological topics, and enjoy the writings of authors such as C.S. Lewis.

I was really excited to know some of Tozer's sermons were being newly released and especially regarding Paul. He delves deep into what we're up against in a world so broken, reminds us of God's grace, getting us through each day, and who we are in Him—victors!

His teachings were powerfully stated and thorough with unique perspectives. I chewed on a lot while reading.

It was extremely relevant to all the pitting against each other happening today and I found his work encouraging and hopeful in that regard!
