Jessica’s Snobby Club
On the way from school, Liz makes up a dumb Valentine’s poem which is a lead in to how Liz likes to write and read and how different the twins are. When they get home, the twins notice there’s a package. Mrs. Wakefield says it’s from Hawaii. Liz says it must be from their grandparents. The package is for Jessica. There’s another for Steven. Alice says Liz’s is probably held up in the mail and will arrive the next day (or the day after). Jessica’s gift is a silk orchid (It’s a pin). Jessica’s always wanted one. Lila has two of them. Lila was supposed to give Jessica one but because she was sick on the day she was supposed to go to Lila’s, she gave it to Ellen.

Jessica proudly shows her orchid to Ellen and Lila and they agree to all wear them the next day. Lila says they can be a club because they’ll be the only ones with silk orchids. They’ll call themselves “The Orchid Club.” Jessica says Liz has one too, but because it hasn’t arrived yet, Lila says she can’t be in the club. Jessica isn’t comfortable with this and goes to Liz and tells her to tell them she wants to be in it. Liz tho isn’t even interested in being in a club with Lila and Ellen Lila isn’t backing down either about Liz actually having the orchid.

The next morning, Liz asks Jessica what she’s going to wear to school and she says a purple sweater and white shorts. Liz says she’ll wear a purple sweater too but Jess tells her she can’t. It’s a rule that all the club will wear purple sweaters or shirts every day and since she’s not in it. Liz thinks that’s stupid and wears the purple sweater in defiance. Admitedly she thought at first the idea was stupid but now Liz feels left out. When Jessica comes down instead of the purple sweater she’s wearing a purple tee-shirt with the silk orchid.

Eva and Amy want to know what the club does. Liz says make up rules and she’s mad because they keep people out just because they don’t have a silk orchid. Liz, Amy, and Eva say they’ll start a club and let anyone join. There club will be “The Sunflower Club”. Eva draws sunflowers on there hands. Lila starts to show Ellen and Jessica a book about orchids, but Caroline and Julie walk up to them and ask about their club. Neither have silk orchids. Caroline has a glass fish and Julie has a silk ribbon. They tell her they’ll Liz is starting a club and they’ll just join hers. Jessica wishes Julie and Caroline could be in the club just to have more members, but until Liz gets her orchid it’ll just be three. Lila thinks Liz is just jealous and as soon as she gets her orchid she’ll want to join them. Jessica thinks differently.

Lila says they should have names. Lila’s is “Lady Slipper”. Ellen’s is “Mocassin Flower” Jessica’s is “Vanilla” She explains Vanilla Beans come from orchids. Jessica isn’t feeling it. She looks at Liz’s club. They’re all laughing and drawing on their hands. She’s even let in Lois. Jessica is kind of wishing she was in Liz’s club. She even says so but Lila says she can’t be in both and there will be a secret meeting tomorrow. Jessica remembers she’s supposed to go to the library with Liz. Lila tells her if she doesn’t go she’s out! So, she decides later for Liz. She’ll be aight.

At the library, Liz thinks about how Jessica wouldn’t tell her the important thing she had to do and how the club is changing who she is. She even told her she changed her name to “Vanilla”. Liz just doesn’t get why the club is so important.Liz goes home and looks at all the Valentines she’s made. She hasn’t made Jessica’s yet so she makes it and puts “To the best sister in the whole world. Love Liz”. She draws a sunflower on the heart. Jessica comes home just as Alice tells her her present came. It’s a light blue orchid. (Jessica’s is pink). Jessica tells her she can be in the club now. Liz says she doesn’t want to be an Orchid but she can be a Sunflowr.

Jessica doesn’t come right out and tell Lila and Jessica Liz doesn’t want to be in the club when they ask if she got her flower. Liz tho doesn’t hold back when they tell her they’re going to think of a name for her. Jessica decides she’s not going to give Liz the card she made for her. Lila calls her stuck up. Jessica knows this isn’t true. Liz is just stubborn.

Liz looks at her cards. She doesn’t have one from Jessica. She decides she might not give Jessica one. She’s still mad at her anyway. She called the Sunflower Club stupid. Eva and Amy ask if she and Jessica are having a fight. She says she isn’t sure then she tells them Jessica didn’t give her a card. They say maybe she’ll give it to her later. On the playground, Jessica is starting to get tired of hearing Lila brag about the presents her father gives her. They ask again why Liz doesn’t want to join their club and if it’s because she thinks she’s too good. Jessica says she just like the Sunflowers better. She suggests they play games like she sees the Sunflowers doing but Lila and Ellen don’t want to get their silk flowers dirty.

Jessica goes over to the other girls She gives her sister a Valentine of two girls (blond) with a heart around them. Then Liz gives Jessica her card. Jessica says she’s sory. Liz says she’s sorry. Jessica asks can she be in the sunflower Club. Eva says she needs one thing. She draws a picture on the back of her hand. Then they all play “Tv Tag”. Jessica wants Lila and Elen to join the Sunflowers but knows Lila won’t admit to making a mistake. So, she and Liz come up with a plan.
Jessica goes over to them She tells them she has a message. She tells them to surrender to the sunflowers or they’ll be kidnapped. Ellen thinks this sounds fun. Lila says no way. So, Lois, Eva, Amy, Liz, and Jessica go and chase and catch Ellen. Then they draw a sun flower on her hand. They go after Lila and tell her to surrender. Lila says no but they all start to tickle her and she says she gives up. She’ll be a sunflower.

My Thoughts:
It was interesting to me how this was a prequel to “Best Friends” and the Unicorn club. It would be cool if there was a book that showed the start of the Unicorns and either Lila or Ellen went back and said “Remember when we were in the second grade and we all had silk flowers and started that club?” It was also interesting to see that in his book, Lila *wanted* Liz to join their club. As we all know, she never really thought Liz was right for the Unicorn Club. The end where Lois, Amy, Eva, Jessica, and Liz make Lila and Ellen surrender by chasing, “kidnapping”, and ticking them and then drawing sunflowers on their hands was kinda cute! It actually showed a lighter side of Lila which is something we rarely see apart from the boosting and bragging.

I remember reading this when I was little. I really hate Jessica for being a snob. The club she made was exclusive to kids who has a flower pin. I think that was really stupid but because they were just kids, her classmates think that its exclusivity was cool and like the "it" crowd. Good thing Elizabeth was clever to come up with another club that does not require any stupid thing. Plus, her club's activities were really fun. Clearly, that made her sister jealous. But in the end, they all joined Elizabeth's club and got along with each other

A precursor to the Unicorn Club maybe? The kids get presents from their grandparents in Hawaii - only Liz’s is lost in the mail. Jess got a silk orchid (looks like a flower you pin on?) which she’s really wanted ever since Lila promised her one of hers, but gave it to Ellen. They figure Liz will get one too because they always get the same present. Lila decides they should form a secret Orchid Club, with membership only for those who have a silk orchid. Jess is stoked - until Lila says Liz can’t join until she gets hers. Liz is annoyed, and starts her own club - the Sunflower Club, which anyone can join. The girls are both equally upset that they’re not hanging out together, and don’t give each other Valentines cards. Until Jess gets sick of not having fun in the Orchid Club and joins the Sunflowers. They ‘kidnap’ Ellen and Lila into joining, and all is well. The led into the next book is talking about Bruce Patman - who only Lila knows (and thinks is spoiled rotten), so that should be interesting!
My rating - 4/10 - I quite liked it! Always a fan of the Unicorn Club, and Lila’s snobbery 😂

I liked it at the end because Jessica joined the Sunflower Club. The story taught me a lesson. It is more fun when everyone plays together instead of everyone just separate playing by theirselves.

I liked how Elizabeth didn't want to be snobby, so she started a club where anyone could join.
