Westcar Papyrus (P. Berlin 3033) is a fragmentary ancient Egyptian text containing a cycle of five stories about marvels performed by priests and magicians. Each of these tales is being told at the court of the Pharaoh Khufu (r. 2589-2566 B.C) by his sons. The story in the papyrus is usually rendered in English as "King Cheops and the Magicians" and "The Tale of King Cheops' Court,"'Cheops' being the Greek variation of 'Khufu'.
The surviving copy of the Westcar Papyrus consists of twelve rolls. It was, written in the Hyksos period (18th to 16th century BC), but the tales appear to have originated some time in the 12th dynasty of the Middle Kingdom (ca. 20th century BC).It has been used by historians as a literary resource for reconstituting the history of the 4th dynasty.
In 1839 Henry Westcar, who had acquired the papyrus rolls in 1824 or 1825, gave them to the Egyptologist Karl Richard Lepsius, who was however unable to decipher the text. The text was finally edited by Adolf Erman in 1890.
The papyrus is on display in low-light conditions in the Ägyptisches Museum, Berlin.

Phenomenal! One of the more famous works discovered on papyri. Three ancient tales whose authors mastered the art of story-telling : shocking and titillating, they're a surprise peek into dynastic Egypt... and how modern it was! Who knew porters were tipped 5,000 years ago ?

The Westcar Papyrus, dated to the Second Intermediate Period of Egypt (1782 - c.1570 BCE), but most likely written during the Middle Kingdom (2040-1782 BCE), contains some of the most interesting tales from ancient Egypt. The papyrus takes its name from the man who first acquired it, Henry Westcar, who purchased the piece c. 1824 CE.
The scroll was later purchased or otherwise acquired by the Egyptologist Karl Lepsius c. 1839 CE, who understood only parts of it, and then was finally translated into German in 1890 CE by Adolf Erman. Erman's translation then became the standard on which later scholars would rely.

Also sometimes referred to as The Tales from the Westcar Papyrus, this papyrus is a collection of five Egyptian stories. Four survive, the first missing. The second is "The Wax Crocodile", the third "The Story of the Green Jewel", the forth "Djedi the Magician", and the fifth "The Birth of the Royal Children". The second is about a creative method to pay the price of adultery, the third is frivolous and about retrieving a jewel from a lake, the fourth is about snapping off heads and kind of dreary, and the fifth is generically about the sacred birth of future kings. The transliterations are easy to read, erasing a common barrier that makes it hard to like ancient stories. Other than the stereotypical last story, I moderately liked all of them.

في هذا العمل نقدم قصص بردية وِستكار ولأول مرة للقارئ العربي المختص وغير المختص مترجمة من النصوص المصرية القديمة مباشرة إلى العربية بشكل ميسر وجذاب. قصص وِستكار على قِدمها ما زالت تقدم تجربة فريدة ومسلية تستحق المشاركة والتأمل، كذلك فإن تفاصيل القصص قد تلقى صداها عند القاريء المحلي بفعل الاستمراية الحضارية.
تُرجمت البردية في أول الأمر إلى الألمانية على يد عالم المصريات الألماني أدولف إيرمان في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، ومن ثم انتشرت ترجمات علماء المصريات في بداية القرن العشرين إلى اللغات الأوروبية المختلفة. في هذا السياق، يأتي هذا العمل في القرن الواحد والعشرين ليبني على جهود السابقين وليستفيد من كم الكشوفات الأثرية والتقدم في علم المصريات ليقدم النسخة الأحدث وربما الأدق لترجمة هذه البردية.
ترجمة البردية مباشرة للغة العربية لها أهمية خاصة، كون العربية والمصرية القديمة تشتركان في النطاق الجغرافي وتنتسبان لنفس العائلة اللغوية الكبرى (اللغات الأفروآسيوية). بناءً على هذه القرابة التاريخية، وللتأثير المعرفي للحضارة المصرية القديمة في المنطقة عبر العصور، ربما كانت اللغة العربية من أنجع الوسائط لنقل الفكر المصري القديم وتوضيح تعابيره الخاصة. ومن هذا، التشابه في الكثير من القواعد اللغوية وكذلك استخدام المحسنات البديعية، كما يتجلى في تكرار الجناس اللفظي في قصة ولادة الملوك الثلاث. كذلك فإن العادات والتقاليد القديمة ما زالت مترسخة في المجتمع المحلي، كما هو الحال في عادة لبس القميص "مقلوباً" للذي ينتظر مولوداً، والتي ترجمت خطأ فيما سبق حسب ما اطلعنا عليه من ترجمات.
في كتابه عن الأدب المصري القديم تكلم العالم "إرنست بدج" عن أهمية تعميم القصص ونقلها للقاريء المحلي (البريطاني في حالته)، كذلك تكلم العالم "ويليام بيتري" في كتابه عن أهمية الصورة في تقريب المفاهيم وتركيز الأفكار. على نفس الخطى، اخترنا أن نقدم هذا العمل الثمين بصورة عصرية على شكل قصص مصورة تضع القاريء في خِضَم الأحداث ليعيش التفاصيل ويختبر المشاعر، على أمل أن يحطم هذا المنتج الحاجز المعرفي ما بين المتلقي والمحتوى العلمي الرصين، ويساهم في تعميم العلوم ونشر حب علوم المصريات في الأجيال الصاعدة. إضافة إلى الجانب البصري، ارتأينا أن يحوي العمل النصوص كاملةً بالخط الهيروغليفي (عن الهيراطيقي) وبالترجمة، وربما لأول مرة (لنص متكامل مطبوع) بـ"الصوتيات العربية"، مما يقدم مرجعاً أساسياً لدارسي المصريات ولمن يهتم بتعلم اللغة المصرية القديمة.
يُذكر أن أولى المحاولات لكتابة الصوتيات العربية ربما كانت على يد شيخ الأثريين المصريين "أحمد كمال باشا" في معجمه للغة المصرية القديمة، الذي وللأسف لم يرَ النور في وقته وظل حبيس مخطوطة غير نهائية وغير منقحة تجمع ما بين العربية والفرنسية. في نقلنا للبردية للصوتيات العربية حافظنا على اتجاه النص الأصلي من اليمين لليسار وحاولنا الاستفادة من إمكانيات الخط العربي المتصل وعلامات التشكيل والحركات لتيسير قراءة البردية بلغتها الأصلية المصرية القديمة.

It contains 5 Egyptian tales, the first of which is missing, but the others are pretty well known. In the most interesting story the king is depicted as very kind and helpful to his subject by getting her lost necklace from the bottom of the Nile.
