Who Murdered the Food Critic? . . .

Noelle is pacing in the kitchen, worried about the arrival of the food critic, Veronica Bellamy, coming to Sinclair’s Sweets bakery today. Everything is immaculate, but Noelle wants to be absolutely sure they are ready. This critic is well respected and her opinion matters. When she hears the door open, she hurries out to greet the customer and sees Veronica there with a scowling face and icy tone to her voice, not at all like the kind, smiling critic she has read about. The woman tells her to hurry up because she has another appointment and wants to get this over with! If she gives them a bad review, it can severely hurt their business that depends heavily on visitors who listen to those reviews. She brings out the samples and Veronica snaps at her, again rushing her to "get this over with", then glares at Noelle for "hovering". As Veronica is ready to rush out, Noelle invites her to return and try their Black Forest Cake the next day so she can include it in the review. She finally agreed and headed for the next bakery she was evaluating. She totally did not seem like the smiling critic Noelle had read so many good things about.

Her dad and Joy returned and it was difficult to tell them how the food critic rated them. All she had done was scowl and hurry away. It was like she already had made up her mind before she had arrived. And she only nibbled a tiny piece from the pastries she was given. When Detective Chad makes an official visit to the bakery he tells them that the food critic was dead and he had questions for Noelle's dad who had no alibi for where he was at the time of death. Because he is now a suspect, his daughters Holly, Noelle, and Joy must get involved and prove his innocence. With their dog Snowflake's help, will they discover the real killer and clear their father's reputation? And will Holly's interest in Chad be ruined by his insulting ex-girlfriend Brenda Hunter's arrival? There is more to come, so don't miss this one!

Good potential

Not exactly the sequel I was looking for. I’ve read other books by this author and loved them but this one fel a bit flat. I liked the mystery itself. It was twisty and had a nice backstory that leads up to the murder. Old rivals are a theme and developed fairly well. The sisters I was more than just surface level from them and that’s what they feel like. Not a lot of depth. I absolutely did not like Brenda one bit she’s a real witch, and Chad’s actions and then excuses about them seem trite. I just felt like there was some missed opportunity in character development here. Was it my favorite cozy ever no, was this a decent read yes. I’d give it a 3.5/5. This author definitely has great books The Crystal Cove series is awesome. So had high hopes for this I do hope there is another book and we get some more depth in the sisters.

Relationship Problems, A Murder, And A Dog That Should Be A K9 Officer!

Well, this episode has a lot going on. First, there are relationship problems between Holly and Chad (the town sheriff). On their first date at a fancy restaurant, Chad's ex-girlfriend and still a mean girl many years after high school, intrudes in on Holly and Chad's date. Needless to say, there is tension between them during the whole book. Secondly, A famous food critic comes to town, in order to review both Sinclair Sweets and Travis Ian's bakeries. Her attitude is completely different than it is in social media and she's not a very nice person. Before she can post any reviews, she's murdered in an alley on the way back to her hotel. While checking alibis, the only person lacking one is Holly's dad. So, Holly and her sisters Noelle and Joy start investigating. Dad was supposed to be at a florist buying flowers for their mom's grave, and then he went to the cemetery. The sisters question the florist and cemetery guards until they find an alibi for dad. Now that Dad's no longer a suspect, the rumors are still going around town about Dad being a possible murderer, and that he was only let out of jail because of Holly and Chad's relationship. So, the sisters and Chad go all out to find out who killed the food critic. Also helping in a super big way is Snowflake, the Sinclair Family's Australian Shepherd. He leads both Holly and Chad, on two separate occasions, to murder scene evidence that the police K9 didn't find. There are a couple of suspicious people and the sisters and Chad have to figure it all out before the Sinclair's bakery goes completely under. The only part of the book I didn't like was the ending: a mystery was left , and now we'll probably have to wait another whole year to find out what secret Dad, Noelle, and Joy didn't tell Holly. I really wish that all books could solve all mysteries by the book's end. Anyhow, I still gave this book a 5 star review. I received an ARC, and this is my honest review.

More People Should Watch What They Say

Someone got "bumped off", in the truest sense of the phrase. Many people who strive very hard to perform something perfectly and who then have their efforts (and/or products) belittled resent it to some degree. There are those who are criticized and who see the criticism as valid, and can then improve upon what they had already considered their best effort. That's constructive criticism in a nutshell. But then, there's the other kind, the kind you expect from the queen bee in a high school rivalry ... not meant to be constructive but to be as degrading as possible. That type can generate a lot more resentment and sometimes even hatred.

Imagine you worked hard for five years and designed a new machine that creates gasoline from factories' smokestacks. It produces energy while simultaneously cleaning the environment and worth a fortune if it can be patented, marketed, and produced in quantity before the "pirates" of Asia can reverse-engineer your work. Now, further suppose that the "green energy" gang attack your work because they can't get rich from it (their real motivation) and publish lies about it's value everywhere. Wouldn't you resent it? I would.

Suppose you had just spent every dollar and borrowed several million more to manufacture your invention in bulk - and the lies caused your sales to be cancelled. Now that resentment can build into hatred and desperation. Many of us would do almost anything to get even at that point. What would YOU do?

Miss McSpade has provided us with a logical, if not the most social, consequence of unfettered criticism. Intertwined with a burgeoning love story, family dynamics, a good pooch, and the failures of society when assailed with gossip, the Black Forest Cake mystery is a very well written murder novel.

The Sinclair sisters, Noelle, Holly, & Joy, are hopeful that a visit from food critic, Veronica Bellamy, will elevate the reputation of their bakery. Instead of the congenial personality she was expecting, Noelle finds Ms. Bellamy rude and difficult to please. Meanwhile, Holly’s eagerly anticipated date with Detective Chad is torpedoed by his ex-girlfriend who treats Holly horribly. Holly is heartbroken that Chad doesn’t stand up for her or come after her. In fact when he does show up again, it’s to arrest her dad for the murder of the food critic. The Sinclair sisters refuse to sit on the sidelines while rumors spread about their father and the bakery. With the help of their dog, Snowflake, the girls uncover clues the police missed. But can they find the killer before the bakery goes under? And will Holly and Chad get another go at romance or will mean girl Brenda win him back?

While the mystery is solid, and the family dynamics are interesting, the alternating POVs of the sisters took some getting used to, and checking back to see who was heading the chapter slowed down the momentum for me. The conflict between Holly and Chad worked well as a counterpoint to the investigation, and I was pleased to see that they finally had a real conversation about the disastrous date. The sisters have good investigative instincts and were thoughtful in their approach. Snowflake needs to be elevated to the police force after giving better cues than the police canine unit. The mystery wraps up neatly, with a satisfying conclusion and a few red herrings. The story ends with a hint at more to come.

While I did like this book, I never felt like I connected with the characters, the sisters especially. I think this is because each chapter was told from the perspective of a different sister, so you didn't really get to know them as individuals and they tended to just blend into one character, which is a shame because otherwise I liked it. The story focused mostly on solving the murder with the romance drama squashed into car rides to interrogate suspects or go over the crime scene, things you can only get away with in small towns. I did feel sorry for the boyfriend because Holly (?) didn't give him a chance to explain but I guess that relationship will develop throughout the series. The mystery had you guessing as to who was responsible with two strangers in town. I did work out the motive before the sisters but not who was responsible. Over all an interesting start to a new series.

When a good critic arrives in town, the Sinclair sisters are hoping to make a good impression with there bakeries most popular desserts. Things don't go well and it only gets worse when the critic is found dead in an alleyway. With there father the only one unable to provide an alibi he is taken down to the station. With customers staying away and there dad's freedom on the line, the sisters have no choice but to investigate. Can they find the real killer? And will Holly be able to work with her ex boyfriend and the man she still loves in order to find the truth?

Black Forest Cake Murder is the second book in the Sinclair Sisters Bakery Mystery series by Karen McSpade. It is the first book I’ve read in the series, although I knew it; I didn’t even realize it when I was reading it.

I was drawn into the story from the beginning. I like the Sinclair Sisters, Holly, Noelle, and Joy, and I like that the story is told from all three sisters' points of view. Holly, Noelle, and Joy run a bakery with their father.

They are preparing for a food critic to visit their bakery. The food critic seemed to be somewhere else during the review, which made her seem like she might not be a decent person. However, I believe she was preoccupied with troubling thoughts.

Later, the food critic is found dead in an alley. The Sinclair sisters’ dad becomes the prime suspect in the case, as he didn’t have an alibi. The sisters set out to prove their father’s innocence, as they knew their dad did not kill that woman.

I enjoyed getting to know the sisters and hearing about their lives. The mystery and suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. I wanted to know what was happening, who killed the food critic, and why.

I can’t wait to see what happens after Black Forest Cake Murder. I look forward to the next book in the Sinclair Sisters Bakery Mystery series. I wonder what awaits the Sinclair Sisters!

Not only that, but I highly recommend Black Forest Cake Murder to all murder mystery fans! Grab a copy of Black Forest Cake Murder today!

This is the second book in the Sinclair Sisters Bakery Mystery Series that has you guessing until the end. The book is written in the point of view style with each of the three sisters. The Sinclair Sisters, Holly, Noelle, and Joy run the Sinclair Sweets bakery with their father whose specialty is a Black Forest Cake. We begin with Noelle waiting for the famous food critic, Veronica Bellamy since her approval could help with advertising their bakery. When Veronica arrives, she is in the foulest, acerbic, bullying mood to do the taste test, rushing Noelle along. As Veronica was ready to leave, Noelle tells her to come back the next day to taste her father's famous cake. Shortly after Veronica Bellamy,, Veronica was found dead in the alley. To make matter worse, The girls' father becomes the prime suspect. So of course, the girls have to investigate to clear their father's name and Snowflake their intelligent dog is there to help. To complicate matters, Holly really likes Detective Chad and things started going in that direction until his insulting ex-girlfriend shows up and he is also investigating her dad. This is a page turning second book in a series that I recommend! I can't wait to see what will happen with the girls next. I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Black Forest Cake Murder is the second book in the Sinclair Sisters Bakery Mystery series. It's a fun cozy mystery perfect to read on a weekend. Even though I hadn't read the first book in the series, I didn't feel that reading the first book was necessary to understand the storyline.

The sisters are likable, and each has a different personality, making them easy to distinguish. I enjoyed the chemistry between Chad and Holly. Their relationship is realistic and relatable. I appreciated how the author brings the characters to life. She draws the reader into the story, and the reader can't help but care about the characters and what happens to them.

The mystery itself wasn't predictable, and it had a successful ending. The mystery was solved, yet the author left the storyline open for the next book. She left enough up in the air to make me want to read the next book to see what happens.

I enjoyed the author's writing style. It was conversational, and the pace moved perfectly. Plus, she includes the recipe for the black forest cake at the end of the book.

It's a cute, cozy mystery that I enjoyed reading. I look forward to reading the other books in the series.

Author Karen McSpade delivers yet another delightful cozy mystery in Black Forest Cake Murder. Every chapter is a page turner. I couldn't stop reading even for a moment. This is a perfect blend of mystery, thrill, unexpected twists, love, care, and adventure.

Holly is convinced a rave review from a legendary food critic will launch Sinclair’s Sweets into stardom. But moments before the spotlight can shine, the critic turns up dead — and the evidence points straight at the Sinclairs’ father. Overnight, the bakery becomes ground zero for suspicion, and the sisters’ world flips into chaos.

Refusing to watch their family crumble, Holly, Noelle, and Joy dive headfirst into a dangerous hunt for the truth. Each clue exposes darker motives, deeper betrayals, and a trail of secrets someone is desperate to keep buried. And lurking just beyond their reach is a shadowy stranger who seems to be watching them.

Who is he really? What does he want with the Sinclairs? And can the sisters unmask the true killer before their family’s name — and their future — are destroyed for good?”

If you love twisty mysteries with the warmth of family love, care, and high-stakes secrets, don’t miss this gripping read. Kudos to Ms. McSpade for her latest work.

BLACK FOREST CAKE MURDER is a  Sinclair Sisters Holiday Cozy Mystery by Karen McSpade. As one reader said, this could be a Hallmark Mystery movie series - an engaging storyline with quirky characters. This story is short and easy to read in one sitting.

This is a cozy mystery about Sinclair’s Sweets, in Chestnut Hills. This family bakery is operated by three sisters; Noelle, Holly, and Joy; alongside their hardworking dad. The family is looking forward to a visit from renowned food critic. A good review will elevate the reputation of their bakery. Unfortunately, the food critic is found dead shortly after visiting Sinclair’s Sweets and their dad arrested.

Holly’s eagerly anticipated date with Detective Chad is invaded by Chad's former girlfriend who butts with Holly storming out without Chad.  Oh bad boy!

I enjoyed the interactions and relationships between Holly and her family and the people of the town  and look forward to learning more about these sister sleuths. I'm curious to see how they kerp developing and what kinds of investigations they dive into.

There is no big cliffhanger except for a growing romance. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Sisters Noelle, Holly, and Joy Sinclair, who solved a nice cozy dognapping mystery in "Christmas Cakes and Crooks," are trying to impress a food critic they recognize as a real influencer. When she doesn't seem impressed, they beg her to come back the next day and sample their Black Forest cake. Before she does, though, she's found dead in an alley. Worse, their father is a suspect.

Noelle feels responsible for protecting her family from suspicion. Holly is still eager to work with her old friend who's become a police detective, though he comes across in this story as a disappointing date and barely competent detective. (The sisters have to tell him to search for the murder weapon in the nearest garbage bin.) Joy proves that she's as brave as the older sisters.

The mystery has a logical solution and, whether or not readers saw it coming, they're rewarded with a recipe for Black Forest cake--traditionally an elaborate, mini-layered confection of relatively simple chocolate cake, vanilla or almond-flavored cream, cherries and sometimes chocolate icing.

Black Forest Cake Murder, the second book in Karen McSpade’s series, is a charming and cozy mystery set around the delightful family bakery, Sinclair’s Sweets, in Chestnut Hills. Run by three sisters; Noelle, Holly, and Joy; alongside their hardworking dad and the family dog, the bakery provides a warm and inviting backdrop for the story.
When a well-known food critic comes to town to review both Sinclair’s Sweets and their biggest competitor, things take a turn after she’s found dead shortly after leaving the bakeries. With suspicion landing a little too close for comfort, the sisters must scramble to prove their father’s innocence and uncover the real killer. I enjoyed reading about their determination and teamwork as the mystery unfolded.
There’s also a sweet touch of romantic rekindling between one of the sisters and a member of the local police department, which adds a fun little extra layer to the story. It’s a cute, quick read, and the culprit genuinely surprised me. I’m looking forward to diving into more of Ms. McSpade’s cozy mysteries.

I love this series by Karen Mcspade . The Sinclair sisters have their work cut out for them when an annoying food critic descends on the bakery Sinclairs Sweets in the small town of Chestnut Hills in Montana. Joy,Holly and Noelle must help to clear their dad ,when the authorities claim that his Black Forest Cake might be to blame…Holly has a crush on detective Chad thinks he’s dishy ,she got it bad . But she has to concentrate on the investigation and poring over the clues is what they must do without fail to keep their dad from going to jail. He really was an awful fellow but it doesn’t take away that there was sorrow. ..With a lot at stake and not a mistake to say or do . They have a lot to sift through before the real culprit is icing behind bars. Immersing and engaging from the get go and ooh that food critic was a bit cutting to the quick ,not nice at all. Good thing he got his comeuppance ,but who done him in? As long as it is Mr. Sinclair taking the rap ,caught in the real killer’s trap. Awesome cosy and fun and yummy sweets to devour even if the deadly deed was sour

Waiting for a food critic to arrive at the Sinclair Sweets bakery has Noelle Sinclair anxious and nervous. She knows that the bakery owned by her father and sisters has a wonderful array of pastries and hopes that the critic, Veronica Bellamy sees that and gives them a glowing review. When the critic arrives, it is not the warm and charming woman Noelle has seen on television but instead she finds a sharp and critical woman. After the critic leaves with a promise to return later to try the Black Forest cake, all three sisters understand that a good review would do wonders for the business, but a bad review will do nothing but harm them. When sisters Noelle, Holly and Joy are told that the critic has been murdered and that their father is a suspect, they agree that they must do all they can to clear their father’s name even if it means investigating the murder themselves. This is my honest and voluntary review of an advanced copy of this book.

Book 2 in the Sinclair sisters series. It starts in immediately with non-stop action and stories within stories. It is hard to put down because you don't want to miss something.
The story line comes from a changing point of view, typically indicated to help the reader know where it originates from. Through the look at things from the differing points of view, you get to know each of the three sisters and the relationships between them. There is always some food being described making it hard to read without a handy supply of treats. Starts right in with the murder of visiting food critic requiring the help of Chad, the local detective. And you can't have a murder investigation without the help of Snowball, an Australian shepherd.
You won't be disappointed with this cozy mystery and it can be read as a stand alone volume without starting the series with Book 1.

Nope! This book has the two things I dislike about many cozy mysteries: 1- the main female character commits a number of "crimes" as she tries dissolve the mystery by interfering or endangering the law-enforcement efforts. #2: It has a cliffhanger ending. I think cliffhangers insult my intelligence! If I like the book, I will go ahead and get the next book, but I'm not going to do it if you leave a cliff-hanger! One star off for each of these!

Amazon synopsis:
When a renowned food critic is found dead after visiting Sinclair’s Sweets, the beloved family bakery’s reputation crumbles…and so does the Sinclair family’s peace. For Holly, Noelle, and Joy Sinclair, it’s more than bad news — it’s personal. Their father becomes the prime suspect in a murder that threatens to tear their small Montana town apart.

Determined to clear his name, the three sisters must unravel a tangled web of secrets, bitter rivalries, and long-buried grudges simmering beneath the quaint streets of Chestnut Hills. As clues lead them down unexpected paths — from a jealous competitor’s simmering resentment to a mysterious stranger’s shadowy past — the clock ticks toward another deadly strike.

Amid the mounting suspense, Holly wrestles with her feelings for Chad, the local detective and her high school crush, while navigating the complicated presence of his determined ex. With family loyalty, romance, and a treasured bakery all on the line, will the Sinclair sisters rise to the challenge and solve the mystery before the killer serves their final course?

The Sinclair sisters (Noell, Holly and Joy) find themselves in the middle of a mystery when a well-known food critic is murdered after visiting their bakery and their father is the prime suspect. The sisters are determined to clear their father’s name and team up with local detective Chad, who also happens to be Holly’s former boyfriend. Will the girls be able to find the real killer and clear their father’s name?

I was gifted this book and I must say, it was an enjoyable read. Even though it is the second book of the series, it can be easily read as a standalone. The book is told from multiple POV’s which can sometimes lead to a little bit of confusion. I liked the main characters and thought the plot line was solid. It was a pretty fast read and there is even a recipe for Black Forest Cake at the end. All-in-all, I feel this is a book that cozy mystery lovers will appreciate.

Food critic meets a bad end.
The Sinclair sisters are hoping for a good review from food critic Veronica Bellamy for their bakery. When things don't go well Noelle talks the critic into coming back for a black forest cake tasting in a couple days. When detective Chad shows up and informs them the critic has been found dead, and their father becomes a prime suspect, the sisters and their dog Snowflake launch an investigation to clear him and find the killer. With Holly's strained relationship with Chad bouncing through the case, and a major lack of customers, there is much stress in the story. A quick read mystery with interesting characters and an intriguing plot.

This is the second book in a series.

The Sinclair family owns and runs a bakery in their hometown in Montana. A food critic turns up dead, and all eyes on are the Sinclair's father--did he kill the critic? Will they be able to solve the mystery before anything else disastrous happens? You'll enjoy watching this story unfold--the twists and turns were surprisingly and really had me sucked into the story.

I received an advance copy of this book, and these reviews are my own.

I love reading anything from Karen McSpade! Her writing style and characters have a way of drawing me in and I usually cannot put her books down--this is no exception, and I'd highly recommend this one. If you like cozy mysteries, this will be right up your alley.

Black Forest Cake Murder is the second in the Sinclair Sisters Bakery series. When a food critic is found dead, Holly, Noelle and Joy's father is the prime suspect. In order to clear their dad's name, the sisters investigate and clues lead them to learn unexpected things about their friends, neighbors and town.
This is a good cozy mystery read with a light romance.
I enjoyed getting to know the sisters and feel that you can read this book without reading the first in the series. I was not confused at all with who was who. Snowflake is my favorite! The animals always are.

Fast paced enjoyable read that I devoured in late night and early morning sessions.
Small town setting where everyone knows you and your business.
Bakery goodness topped with sisterly love and defense amongst them especially when their dad is a suspect.
Their precious dog aids in his owners defense bringing more love to the table where old rivals end their grudge.
New beginnings for a stranger down on his luck and for one of the sisters.
A delicious and delightful read making you drool for more.

Black Forest Cake Murder - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

Karen McSpade's heart-warming cozy mystery is set in Chestnut Falls, where sisters Joy, Noelle and Holly are anxious, when a famous food critic comes to town...and is dismissive when asked if she'd like to try the eponymous cake.
A tragedy follows, so the Sinclair sisters and Snowflake, their dog, must help Officer Chad solve the case, thus clearing the family's reputation.
To top it all, the author generously gives the recipe for this spectacular cake at the end, making Black Forest Cake Murder even more unmissable...what are you waiting for? Go get it!

This was a short quick yummy read with murder mystery and baked goods.

When a food critic arrives in town, the Sinclair sisters are hoping to make a good impression with their most popular desserts. However things don't go well and they only get worse when the critic is found dead in an alleyway.

There father is unable to provide an alibi so he is taken down for questioning the sister and determines to figure out who did it and save there dad.

Can they solve the crime and find the real killer?

I enjoyed reading this enthralling mystery with its captivating characters and their points of view. The Sinclair sisters have been well portrayed. Noelle is the practical and protective eldest sister. Holly is more laidback but responsible. Joy is empathetic When a murder takes place and their father is accused, Holly goes all out to gather clues and find the killer in spite of her personal issues with her friend, Chad, who is the lead detective. A well crafted plot.

Black Forest Cake Murder is a nice follow up to book one, Christmas Cakes and Crooks. I enjoy the warmth between the sisters and their father. As a group they are delightful. The murder was a good one with enough shady characters to keep the girls guessing and the cops off kilter. Especially when Dad is one of the accused. The black forest cake recipie at the end of the story is to die for. Nicely done, I enjoyed my time with the ladies.

A fun cozy mystery.

The visiting food critic was supposed to bring more business to the bakery, not destroy their reputation. With their father as the prime suspect, Holly, Noelle, and Joy Sinclair must follow the trail of clues to find the real killer.

Mystery and tasty recipes! Yum! I like the way the sisters interact with each other. It is typical of siblings. The clues were fun to follow as the story progressed. Good twists. I received an advance copy, but my review is honest and voluntary.
