Teach a wounded submissive the value of his service. The task ought to be an easy one for an experienced dominant like Henry Webb.
But novice Jay Kress challenges his teacher like no other. Still bearing the bruises of an encounter outside the bounds of safe consensual play, Jay is desperate to submit to the man who saved him—and shamed by his desires.
Henry recognizes the dangers of a relationship built on hero worship. He’ll teach Jay how to stay safe, that’s all. He won’t take advantage of the younger man’s trust. He won’t share his fantasies about his dark-haired, athletic student. He’ll never claim this submissive for his own...
I am a former Midwestern gal who well knows the joy of flopping down in a field for an afternoon and composing stories about the shapes in the clouds. As it turns out, adulthood doesn't have to be so different from childhood.
Sharing those stories is a new thing for me. I hope readers will love the characters as much as I do.
Wait, a BDSM book that is light on the sex. *gulp* This is a new one for me!
Becoming His Master is book four in the Neighborly Affection series. I read this as a stand-alone and didn't feel the lack of information from the first three books hindered my enjoyment of this one.
Jay Kress is a submissive who has had his submission taken advantage of. He has been hurt and abused and he now lacks trust in a Dom. Henry Webb is a patient, caring Dominant who takes it upon himself to teach Jay the ways of true, safe, fulfilling submission in two months time. And he has his work cut out for him! Jay's kind of a hot-mess.
This book is told entirely from Henry's POV, so it was blatantly obvious what a good, kind man Henry is. The raw emotions these men felt for each other was such a delight that I found myself not missing the sex! Love and emotion is really what BDSM is all about for me, but I, of course, like the hot sex too. Fortunately this book does quite well without it.
If you are a M/M BDSM fan (there is some ménage in this book with a woman, in case that is a deal breaker for you) and enjoy reading about the safely and security a submissive can feel from a gentle, patient, hot-as-fuck Dom and can go 187 pages without hot monkey sex, this book is for you! (Come on! You can do it!) Recommended.
Barber is a new to me author and her writing is reminiscent of Kim Dare, an author close to my heart. I liked this so much that I looked back over the previous three books and realized this is a prequel. IF I can eek out the time I'm going to backtrack and read the others.
Jay and Henry are the centerpiece of this installment. Jay is a novice who's been through an ordeal with a problematic dom who ignored Jay's safe word. Henry is an established dom at this club, friends with the manager, Victor, and his wife, Emma, both of whom encourage Henry to take Jay under his wing. Jay is very eager to please and therefore reckless in his decisions, usually putting his needs/desires/wants secondary to his dom's. Henry's primary objective is to instill a sense of safety and a certain level of wariness in the two months they have before the traumatizing dom's suspension expires. The trouble is Henry is smitten and over the course of these two months he comes to the realization that seeing Jay with another dom would crush him. Henry's concern that Jay is hero worshipping him is the fly in the ointment and it's up to Jay to convince Henry of his devotion.
There isn't a lot of kink but the UST is sky high as is the steam. I would've enjoyed more sex but given Jay's recent trauma I respect that the author didn't jump into buttsex. There was a highly satisfactory frottage scene, though. Henry and Jay move very slowly and layer the tension for the reader. What I enjoyed most was Henry's attention to detail towards Jay; he's highly observant and intuitive and the way he cossets Jay resonated. I also enjoyed the way this club is depicted running the gamut from plushies to age play to sadomasochism and the fact that all are accepted regardless of kink or sexuality. Speaking of sexuality, both Henry and Jay are bisexual and there are girl bits in this, so be forewarned.
The secondary characters were a delight and I'd be interested in reading Will's story if that ever comes to pass. Another reason I'd like to backtrack with this series is to see how Jay progresses with impact play and bondage as his relationship develops with Henry.
My only quibble was Jay's behavior towards the end. I had a hard time believing Jay capable of all that mouthiness with his behavior up till that point. It was very jarring.
Recommend to fans of slow burn, UST, Kim Dare and hurt/comfort reads.
A review copy was provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This could have been a great story, but the heavy-handed writing was a let down.
'Becoming His Master' works fine as a stand-alone, but it is actually a prequel for the Neighborly Affection series. The series is about the two MCs in this book, Jay and Henry, and a female third, Alice. Jay and Henry aren't gay; they are bisexual and there are lady-parts in 'Becoming His Master'. It didn't bother me, but I know some MM readers are particular about that, so consider this a friendly heads-up.
If I was judging this book based solely on the plot, this would be a 3.5 star read. Jay is a new submissive to the BDSM scene, and he's been taken advantage of by many dominants. Reading how Henry takes Jay under his wings, and tries to bring him to a better place was both heartbreaking and very sweet. Seeing how these two fulfilled each others needs was great. And I'm glad that the book focuses on the D/s aspect, rather than S&M. I'm really not a fan of the heavier side of BDSM, so the D/s relationship worked well for me.
What didn't work at all for me was the writing. This is a contemporary novel, yet based on the narration, which is from Henry's POV, and the dialogue of some of the characters, the book might as well have been set during the late 1800s. The language used was very formal, and really ruined the experience for me. The narration was also very purple, with too much description and a lot of "telling" versus showing. The writing just wasn't enjoyable.
Another concern I had, and which I've had with many other BDSM books as well, is the issue of addressing emotional/psychological trauma through kink. I can completely understand if abuse victims use BDSM as a coping method, but coping and healing are two very different things. Jay was a victim of physical and sexual assault. The resulting psychological trauma should have been dealt with through a certified professional. I don't believe that BDSM can cure trauma on its own, the same way I don't believe prayers can cure trauma. It's absolutely ridiculous that BDSM authors continue to ignore this problem.
I was very excited to read 'Becoming His Master', but unfortunately it didn't pan out. The overly formal dialogue and purple prose made it so that I couldn't enjoy the story. I'm assuming fans of this series will probably enjoy this, but I can't recommend it for MM readers who want to try the book as a stand-alone.
Never having read a story by this author, and being drawn in by the cover ---> Mrs Shallow I know, I was surprised to find that this book is part of a series, all m/m/f and involving the same characters, and THIS one (book 4) is the one that a lot of the readers of the series have been waiting for (apparently)...the backstory of Master Henry and his sub Jay. Needless to say, as m/f readers will hopefully be buying it, the sex scenes have been toned down somewhat (practically non-existent) BUT regardless of that (yes, I can and DO read books without much sex), this was a cracking read. 5 stars from me.
Jay Kress, a novice sub, has been visiting a BDSM club where he receives some very unwelcome attention from an unscrupulous Dom, Cal Gardiner. Instead of being respected for his gift of submission, he is abused verbally, mentally and physically, and has been left wounded and possibly broken. The owner of the club Viktor, asks his very good friend and experienced Dominant Henry to try and ascertain what has happened to Jay, from his experiences with Cal Gardiner and others, too caught up in their own desires to give a thought about poor Jay and his feelings. Henry is a model Dom, kind and thoughtful, and very respectful of the submissive’s wishes to give themselves completely to their Master, in fact I would probably go so far as to say that I found Henry to be a little stuffy at times, his use of language stilted and very correct, BUT his behaviour around Jay was exemplary, and the gentle way he coaxed Jay to eventually take part in scenes was touching to read about.
Of course, coming into close contact fairly regularly with a hero-worshipping sub has it’s own drawbacks...as Henry discovers when he begins to fall in love with Jay. Henry has never kept his own submissive, and when he begins to see how wonderful a submissive the newly emerging, more confident Jay is, he realises that Jay is everything he’s ever wanted in a relationship, BUT he doesn’t want to make Jay feel that he is under any obligation to him. There’s a very fine line to be walked here, and as anyone who looks at Jay can tell, he is definitely in love with Henry. Jay is clear in his own mind about what HE desires at the end of the 2 month training period he has with Henry...he wants to be Master Henry’s sub and his alone, and to that end, has help from an unexpected source. Master Viktor’s wife/submissive Emma (who was a real handful and such a great character) knows that Jay is exactly what Henry needs, and decides to do a little meddling of her own to get Henry to admit what is in his heart. Wonderful.
**Edit. Just to say I liked this one so much, I have ordered it as well from Amazon. The format it came in from Netgalley meant that it wasn't an easy read on a kindle.**

Review for Becoming His Master (Neighborly Affections Book 4) by M.Q. Barber
Becoming His Master is book four in the Neighborly Affections series by M.Q. Barber and could be read as a prequel to the first three books — however I would suggest if you are going to read the entire series to read them in the order they are written because you will have a greater understanding of why telling Jay’s story was such a worthwhile journey to series fans.
M.Q Barber has one of the most distinctive voices as a BDSM author I have ever experienced reading. It’s like a breath of fresh air to see someone step outside of the S&M side of things and more into the D/s world. There are so many flavors to the lifestyle and the genre seems entirely focused on the pain side and gives very little to the softer side of submission.
“Your is not my kink, but your kink is okay.”
The entire series can be summed up in that one small quote. Barber hit the nail on the head with this story. It perfectly takes the reader back to when Henry first met Jay and the struggles that painted their past. I normally do not enjoy reading a softer male character. Even in m/m books I like the dynamic between two alpha personalities battling it out, but Jay is such a sweet soul that it’s almost impossible not to fall head over heels for him. If he were a real person I would want to wrap him up in my arms and keep him forever to be MY good boy.
“You may be assured I do so no matter what position I place you in. You are my good boy, and you please me with every sweet smile, every pleading whimper, and every wriggle of desire.”
Henry. Oh, dear sweet dominant Henry. Becoming His Master gave me an entirely new respect for his Domly ways. While he is quite the domestic task master, he is also every bit the sexual dom … he isn’t into pain for pains sake, but understands the need in others for that type or relationship. If ever a fictional book could accurately portray the safe-sane-consensual mantra of any respectable BDSM player this IS the book to do so.
Having read the other books, I knew this one would be a slow burn as far as any kind of sexual gratification, so be warned if you are just looking for a smutty BDSM book, this one is going to leave you disappointed. This book is so much more than wham bam thank you sir. Be prepared to get inside the mind of a calculated and controlled mind of a dominant man and inside the heart of a sweetly sensitive and hurt submissive.
“Why do you allow your fear to hold you back? Love demands more of you. Whether master or servant, we are all of us slaves to love.”
Becoming His Master is an emotional roller coaster that will grab you from the first page. It is every bit a FIVE star storyline, more if I could… and while the book isn’t overly sexual there is more than a little sexual tension and play that will keep your panties soaked through… earning FOUR drenched panties on my smut scale.
I was given this book by Netgalley for a honest review. This is book #4 in the Neighborly Affection series, but it is sort of a prequel to the series. This is the meeting of Henry and Jay before Alice! This series was one that I did not expect to like. The subject matter wasn't one I usually enjoyed reading(the M/M/F dynamic with M/M interaction) and I didn't expect to like it. I was 100% wrong and fell in love with the characters and the series! I was excited to hear about this book because I adore Henry and Jay. This book was automatically put in my pre-order cart as soon as I heard about it. I was lucky enough to receive a early copy and I read this book in one day!! It was very interesting to see Henry and Jay's history and how they met. I enjoyed seeing this much more vulnerable Jay(whose character I adore and I want one!!) and the Domineering, yet compassionate Henry who helps save him. I also enjoyed a little bit more of the background information. It was interesting and a little sad seeing a certain character who is not in the other books. I enjoyed meeting this person! I would almost suggest to people to read this book first, and then start with book #1, just because it would show how much the characters grow together, but any order would be satisfying! I highly recommend this series and hope there will be a 5th one!!!
This book was stunning. This is exactly what the "Neighborly Affection" addicts needed in order to gain a better perspective of Henry Webb. We have been all trying to figure out exactly the depth to Henry's devotion to his subs and what Henry does the things he does throughout the other novels. This novel is an important piece to the puzzle for this triad. I highly recommend reading this book and I highly recommend M.Q. Barber.
The retraining/rehabilitation of sub Jay by Dom Henry was very nice. Although Jay needed to see a counselor in addition to the good work that Henry did with him. I really enjoyed Henry's POV and thought processes as he slowly, artfully and tenderly guided Jay to build personal boundaries and self confidence.
Both men were bi. Both men invited additional people into their scenes - both Doms and subs, men and women. If I had known that I would have skipped the book.
After I wasted time reading this book and getting grossed out and disappointed, I realized it is a prequel to the first book in the series which is M/M/F. I hope this review will help future readers.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Becoming His Master is the fourth book in the Neighborly Affection series, and serves as a series prequel. I have been a huge fan of this series since Playing the Game was released, and wasn’t sure how I would feel about a book focused on Jay and Henry alone. So much of the first three books were about Alice and her relationship with the two men and I love their dynamic. I shouldn’t have been worried! This is an amazing book, and so incredibly well done.
Becoming His Master starts with Jay having very recently entered the BDSM scene. He is a young man who has rapidly discovered his submissive nature and also his bi-sexuality all at the same time. In his urgency to fill needs that he finally has an outlet for he falls prey to some sadist predators masking themselves as dominant men. A major event happens in a club prior to the book’s start where Jay is very badly beaten in a scene with a Dominant. Henry intervenes and that is the catalyst that brings them together. Henry decides reluctantly to take Jay under his wing and introduce him to BDSM and help him understand his needs while also respecting his personal safety. The book takes us over the next few months, each chapter focusing on their standing Friday date at the local BDSM Club where the training and lessons take place.
M.Q. Barber has done such an exceptional job of making these characters so incredibly life-like and normal. I feel that these two men could actually exist out there somewhere in the world. Although this book has sexual moments in it, it isn’t all about sex all the time. In fact, the majority of the book is about personal growth, understanding oneself, and finding a partner (or partners) in the world that balances and compliments you while accepting you for who you are.
I am used to reading BDSM books were the main male character is some huge alpha-male whose sexual prowess knows no bounds, although he is emotionally closed off. He introduces a naive young submissive to the erotic nature of pain and pleasure. The submissive always loves what he does, regardless of what it is. She breaks down his walls and cold nature, and they ride off into the sunset a week after they meet. Although I have read and enjoyed those types of books, many times you have to suspend reality. That is not the case in Becoming His Master. The author has avoided all of those clichés and given us an amazing love story in a BDSM setting. The characters are flawed in such true ways and the acceptance of those flaws is beautifully written. Their relationship is forged over months, and they really get to know one another. They complement and balance each other is such authentic ways. The examples of power-exchange without the typical bondage/spanking/pain/humiliation that is so common in erotica and romance today was also refreshing.
If you are a BDSM fan, or just truly enjoy great love stories you should check this series out. This book is MM, but the rest of the series is MMF. I would encourage you to read the books in order, but it isn’t necessary as this book could stand alone if need-be. Don’t discount this book or series as one in the pile of BDSM books out there. Do yourself and favor and check them out. M.Q. Barber is truly gifted, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for Master Henry, his boy Jay, and their lovely Alice.

"Why do you allow your fear to hold you back? Love demands more of you. Whether master or servant, we are all slaves to love."
Prior to the night that their paths crossed, longtime dominant Henry Webb and neophyte submissive Jay Kress would never have imagined how entwined their lives would become after Henry rescues Jay from a sadistic and barbaric dominant. The blood may have been wiped clean and his broken skin will slowly heal, but Jay has been traumatized by the physical abuse and degradation he suffered. Henry may be the only one qualified to take the young man under his tutelage and teach him the ways of the BDSM lifestyle, but will Henry be ready to let him go when the lessons have been learned and their time together is up?
Jay is desperately seeking a new dominant to take him into service but those in the club are keeping their distance, as per the orders of the owners for his own safety. When the owner requests Henry take Jay under his wing, Henry is hesitant, and not just because the bloodied and battered novice is forever burned in his memory. There's something about the young man that calls to him like no other person has before, leaving him unsure of whether he can separate being the professional dominant Jay needs from his own personal feelings. The fact that Jay looks at him with such adoration isn't exactly helping matters either.
As Henry agrees to help Jay, he reminds himself that at the end of the two months before the return of the suspended offender who hurt Jay, he will need to have prepared the submissive in the ways of servitude without giving up his rights while looking for the ideal dominant for him. Easier said than done as Jay is showing signs that he was thrust into the world of BDSM without any preparation and the dominants he was previously with failed to provide any training whatsoever. As the weeks pass, Henry falls even more for his young student and will need to soon decide if it's time for him to be honest about what he wants.
Becoming His Master by M.Q. Barber is the fourth novel and fifth release in the addictive Neighborly Affection series and is now officially my favorite book among the five. This is a prequel and tells the tale of Henry and Jay and how their relationship first began and the challenges that they had to face to get to the point that we find them in in book one, Playing the Game. This is pre-Alice and further solidified the idea in my head that the love these two men have for each other is true and pure, with a foundation based on mutual trust and respect and open and honest communication and made me believe they're soul mates.
The Neighborly Affection series as a whole has opened my eyes and has made me view the BDSM lifestyle in a new and refreshing light and I fully appreciated the wonderfully gifted manner in which author M.Q. Barber presented these books. This fifth book in particular was hauntingly beautiful, what with Henry's selflessness and Jay's innocence and their mutual love and affection for one another. Even in the wreckage of a terrible event, something amazing can be found in the rubble, bringing with it light and hope to take over the darkness. Becoming His Master goes on my list of 2015 favorites and gets five-plus stars! ♥
Becoming His Master is a really delightful read that explores a D/s dynamic. Jay is new to the BDSM scene and appears to have issues with self-esteem and a rather warped view of what a submissive should endure, thus making him vulnerable to potential abuse.
The story takes place over a period of two months, during which time Henry a long time player and Dominant agrees to mentor Jay. His aim is to help Jay recover from a scene that went too far with club member Cal subjecting Jay to emotional and physical abuse. Subsequently Cal is suspended for two months in penalty.
The story begins in the aftermath, Henry is deeply concerned that Jay seems not to recognise abuse and feels at fault for not enduring the encounter with Cal. Henry works to teach Jay about the dynamics of power exchange and how this can occur in a mutually respectful, safe and supportive manner.
Becoming His Master is told from Henry's perspective as he uses his skills and experience to guide Jay in etiquette and options available to submissives. Henry's goal is to help Jay identify his preferences and needs whilst establishing boundaries that will keep him safe in future negotiations with potentially less scrupulous dominants. Most importantly to be ready for Cal's imminent return.
Jay and Henry agree to meet at the club each Friday. The tale unfolds at a gentle pace the storytelling is rich and thoughtful, the language often eccentric and at times quite cerebral as Henry wrestles with his conscience and growing attraction to Jay wishing that they could have met in different circumstances when he could be more certain of mutual attraction rather than the hero worship he is concerned Jay fosters for him.
This is a treat of a book, exploring the omplexities of a Dom/sub relationship with positive reinforcement for a man driven to service. Both main characters come to terms with their humanity, their differences, flaws and strengths and their hopes for the future.
Henry is pragmatic and nurturing, rewarding good behaviour and testing for vulnerability. He makes mistakes and he learns from them. He takes the time to consider his past choices and his own drives and wishes.
Jay is charming and engaging and does his best to follow Henry's instructions and to be open to self discovery.
I found the book to be a really satisfying read. Having not read any of the other books in the 'Neighborly Affection' series this is an excellent stand alone story. The language on occasion was like stepping into an Edwardian rather than contemporary romance, but I put this down to Henry's eccentricity and a metaphor for how his formality and ethics may have prevented him from taking risks in the past and from finding a relationship in which he can truly be himself.
If you are looking for a story that is fast paced and full of equally fast and furious sex then this is most likely not for you. The pace is more mellow and thoughtful, like foreplay as the attraction and sexual tension builds to a satisfying outcome. Beautifully written this is thoughtful and engaging, just like the two main characters as they grow towards self understanding, acceptance and build the foundation for love.
Thanks to Kensington Books who provided a copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
In a nutshell: A Dom to make you swoon and a sub to fetch your slippers
I can’t get enough MQ Barber. I’ve become addicted to her writing and her world. Becoming His Master is actually a prequel to her first book, Playing the Game even though it appears fourth in her Neighborly Affection series.
PTG is about established lovers Henry (Dom) and Jay (sub) welcoming their neighbor, Alice, into contractual sexual play. Books 2 and 3 in the series develop the relationship from contractual and temporary to emotional and permanent, and the journey is so well done that I have to give the whole series a great big YOU GOTTA READ.
BHM brings the reader back to the beginning. Jay is new on “the scene.” He has taken a break from the club Henry frequents after being abused by a Dom who did not respect his safeword. Jay was left with bruises and cuts, but the real scars are the ones that no one sees…except for Henry.
Worried for the new sub who clearly doesn’t understand how to keep himself safe in D/s play, Henry takes him under his wing. He tells himself the arrangement is merely instructional. Once Jay understands the appropriate power dynamic of a D/s relationship—mainly that both partners have equal power, but they exhibit it in different ways—he will release Jay so the young man can play more safely.
As the astute reader hopes, Henry invests more than his instruction in his relationship with Jay. If he thinks he can walk away, he’s kidding himself, because he totally loses his heart. Not to mention, Jay is the absolute perfect sub for Henry’s unique inclinations of wielding power but in an environment of compassion, something many subs don’t appreciate or want.
M.Q. presents BHM from Henry’s point of view. Henry grew up in Maine, but he has a decidedly British-professor feel. He loves art and cooking and watching a sub suck his cock. His voice and bearing are formal. Most of us, if we were in the same room as Henry, we’d be nervous that we were dressed appropriately and we would be checking our compacts to make sure we didn’t have spinach in our teeth. But don’t let Henry’s immaculate appearance and air of command fool you. He takes observing human reactions to an extreme, and he holds himself to the highest of standards when it comes to caring for his sub-of-the-moment.
It’s this caring and compassion that Jay craves. Unlike subs who get their kicks from being degraded or from pain-play, Jay simply wants to serve and be praised. As far as D/s relationships go, Jay’s preferences are almost vanilla. But they just happen to compliment Henry’s preferences to a T.
M.Q. has a way of dragging the reader so deep into a character’s point of view, they risk losing hours of sleep by not being able to disengage from her books. BHM is no different. Though lighter on the sex than her other Neighborly Affection books, there is still plenty of steam. I was entranced from beginning to end. Henry charmed me. Jay made me smile. Both made me feel so darn much I wish I could give them both (and M.Q.) big bear hugs.
If you like strong point of view, passion balanced with compassion, and male on male tenderness, You Gotta Read Becoming His Master.
In the beginning, I thought I would be reading a familiar story with a storyline I've read before. That didn't happen. The beginning of the book was different from what i expected and that went on for the rest of the book. We are guided from Henry's point of view as to what is happening, what has to be done and what the possible outcome can be. What felt kinda strange to me was the way Henry was talking, the words he was using, his expression in general. It can be attributed on his job, though some times I felt like he was older than what was said in the book. Another thing that surprised me was the character's closeness, without actual sex happening. It shows how deep a relationship can go, even with mutual acts of trust! It also has me wondering of The story between Victor and Emma, which I would love to read as well. I think that all M/M lovers should buy this book, even if it's to see a different perspective in BDSM. Needless to say, I've already added the rest of the books from this author in my tbr, very close to the top!!!!
I was given an advanced copy, through netgalley, from the editor, in exchange of my honest opinion.
Although this book is part of a series this can be read as a standalone which is what I did.
This story is told through Henry's point of view. Henry is a dominant who wants to teach Jay what a proper sub/Dom relationship should be. Jay has been hurt so much in the past by a previous Dom. Can Henry show Jay his true self worth? What happens when he starts having feelings towards his sub?
This is a bdsm m/m story where the sex scenes are toned down. This is a really brilliant romantic love story in a bdsm setting. I love the characters and I love how the author portrayed them as relatable yet flawed.
After reading this gem I'm so looking forward to reading the rest of this series to read more about these wonderful characters. Highly recommend this book. I loved it.
I've said it three times before, I'll say it again. This is a great series. I was really wondering how this book would feel/read since it's from Henry's POV, but I loved it just as much as the rest in Alice's POV. The characterization is beautifully done and the intimacy gripping.
If you haven't picked this series up, you're seriously missing a string of fantastic reads.
This is the fourth book in a series; I haven't read the preceding books, but had no difficulty with this standalone novel.
Henry Webb is a Master in a BDSM club. A week ago he rescued a young man, Jay Kress, from the abusive attention of a sadist in the club, Cal. Cal has been barred entry for two months, but Jay has returned, looking for another Dom. Looking, for Henry.
Convinced by his friends Victor and Emma, Henry agrees to talk to Jay, determine if he can help this novice submissive from finding further harmful Doms--and their conversation horrifies Henry. Jay has been victimized several times over by many Doms, because Jay is completely untrained and has no idea how to respect his own needs. He had been admonished several times for using his safe word, and now abandons its use fearing a Dom will never accept him--which is how he became an instrument for Cal's torture.
Immediately, Henry claims Jay as his training sub to prevent further abuse to the boy, who still bears welts and scabs from Cal's beating even two weeks later. Jay is enamored and Henry is cautious. Really, really cautious. He agrees to meet Jay one night weekly for two months, and during these training sessions he works diligently to uncover Jay's true submissive desires. They watch scenes, they learn about each other--well, Henry learns tons about Jay. Henry provides the comfort Jay needs, his true desire is to be cared for, be special to someone, and it melts Henry's will to cut Jay loose after their two months of training ends.
Jay learns to accept the power within himself. To voice his fears and his desires. He is so tender and loving, so diligent--Henry considers--for the first time ever--keeping his own regular sub, but Henry fears Jay is only immediately infatuated because Henry is considerate and played a big role in Jay's rescue from Cal. See, before coming to the club as a sub, Jay had been strictly heterosexual, and while Henry has had female subs previously, he is undoubtedly gay. He fears his attraction to Jay will cause him to misstep, cause him to be a poor trainer to Jay, cause him to mold Jay into his own perfect partner against Jay's true desires. It's a heady experience, and Henry takes extreme steps to keep Jay from making a mistake with other Doms in the future.
I have always wondered about the dark side of BDSM--the parts that don't make the romance. This story packs a huge emotional wallop. We are in Henry's head the whole time, learning with him all of Jay's secret desires, exalting in Jay's successes, and, feeling the sting of his rejection and abuse. I absolutely wanted to cuddle Jay, just as Henry did, petting him and praising him. Loving him. Because, this is indeed a love story with a tender fledgling couple.
I received a review copy of this book from NetGalley.
I must admit that I didn’t read past Neighborly Affection and M.Q. Barber before snagging this book. As such, I began it expecting to continue on the journey with my favorite ménage trio – Henry, Jay, and Alice. However, in Becoming His Master, Ms. Barber takes us back in time to show fans how Jay and Henry came to be. Was Alice’s presence missed? Yes, because I was looking forward to seeing how their relationship dynamic continued to progress. Was I disappointed in Becoming His Master? Absofreakinglutely not! With each book I have read of the series, I wanted to know more about Jay and Henry’s relationship, but never did I expect that Ms. Barber would backtrack within the series to tell their tale. Yet she did and delivered an absolutely wonderful book.
I didn’t know it was possible, but with each page that I read of Becoming His Master, I fell even more in love with Henry. As always, the beautiful dominant is ever present in his interactions with Jay. I loved how, from the very beginning, Henry set aside his own desires in order to give Jay the care and guidance he needed. From the previous books, we knew that Jay had suffered at the hands of a sadistic Dom and that Henry had interrupted the scene when it became apparent that Jay’s safeword had been ignored. What we learn over the course of this book is that Jay’s desire and eagerness to serve a Master had exposed him to mistreatment after mistreatment for months – sometimes actual physical abuse, but almost always emotional abuse as Jay was unable to express his needs as a submissive.
Because of Jay’s history, Henry had to walk a fine line so that he could teach Jay to identify his wants and limits, to learn to communicate them, and to learn that above all else, his own safety was paramount, all while not abusing his position of authority over Jay. Having spent three books with Henry, I was not the least bit surprised that he accomplished it. After all, we know that the two are together. But what is mesmerizing is how Henry does it and how he helps nurse the wounded Jay into the wriggly puppy we all know and love. My only complaint with Becoming His Master is that I reached the final page far too soon, but that has happened with every book in the series. Now the countdown begins for the next book in the Neighborly Affection series and as much as I LOVED finally learning Jay and Henry’s history, I do so hope that we return to present day to see how life fares for my favorite trio.

Becoming His Master is book number four in M.Q. Barber's popular Neighborly Affection series. This book is a prequel to the others, so even though I haven't read the first three books I had no problem starting out with this one. Becoming His Master is an intelligently written book that delves into the emotional complexities of D/s. Unlike some BDSM books out there, this isn't filled with spanking and flogging scenes, it goes far deeper than that and is a very rewarding read as a result of this.
After Jay is brutally attacked by a vicious sadist he his rescued by caring Dom Henry. Jay is naturally submissive and badly wants to serve a Dom or Domme, but he has not been taught the fundamental 'safe, sane and consensual' rules of BDSM. Enter the gorgeous Henry, who works hard to teach Jay how to safely interact with dominants, while also helping him to overcome his traumatic attack. The author really stresses how important safety in BDSM is, and the consequences that can happen if this is not followed, which is something that is often glossed over in BDSM romances.
Henry does not use pain to discipline Jay, he's had far too much of that from other dominants. Instead he connects with Jay emotionally and uses rewards and affection to guide his submissive through the world of BDSM, So if you are looking for constant whippings and floggings this book probably isn't for you, but if you are looking for an emotional, romantic journey with some hot sex scenes then this is a book you'll enjoy.
I will definitely be reading books one to three in this series, as I really want to see how Henry and Jay's relationship developed into a menage with a female submissive (I'm a big fan a m/m/f menages). M.Q Barber is a new author for me, but definitely one I would recommend.
Becoming His Master gets 5 out of 5 stars!

Genre Contemporary M/M Romance
MC1 Henry Webb MC2 Jay Kress
Storyline Henry is outraged when he's discovered that Jay has been abused at the hand of another so-called Dominant in the exclusive club they belong to. He wants the abusive club member to be expelled, but Jay won't admit he was abused. Jay believes what happened to him was normal play. So Henry is driven to teach Jay how to be safe when he plays, but Jay wants to belong to Henry as more than just a student. And Henry desperately does not want to take advantage of Jay's hero worship.
Conflict The said abuse happened off page, but Jay does have some flashback memories. All real conflict is internal for Henry - he has to come to terms with his developing feelings for Jay.
My Thoughts I absolutely loved this story! I've loved this series from the beginning and getting so see where Jay & Henry solidified their bond was like winning the lottery. While there's no penetrative sex between the men, there is plenty of steamy build-up & UST going on. You can almost see the smoke coming from the pages as the heat generates between the couple. And I'm a sucker for a good hurt/comfort story so that pulled me right in as well. There were tears in my eyes more than once. I really love these characters and will be sorry when their story ends.

This will will be added to my list of the best BDSM read. M.Q Barber did a stellar job when writing this piece. He captured the nature of BDSM to the fullest and I couldn't be happier that yet another author is discreetly but effectively communicating the differences between BDSM and abuse. He also drives home the point that while everyone within the community may be kinky, everyone's kink is not the same.
Henry takes a broken Jay and educates him on what it means to be a submissive. He bandages and mends the boys scars, both physically and emotionally, making him into a confident but wiser boy. His very unsubtle endearments in reference to Jay make him make him an ideal character and Master.
Jay as a character can sometimes be very aggravating, but in a pitiful way. His inability to recognize his rights as a person and a submissive are somewhat baffling. Although his preconceived notions are not of his doing, its sad.
This book had its steamy scenes. I appreciate an author that doesn't overly portray a scene involving intimacy to a point where it's graphic and nothing is left to the imagination.
This is my first read of M.Q Barber's but it definitely won't be my last. Brava!
I was so excited to hear that we would get to see a little more of beginning of Henry & Jay. The story picks up after the horrible incident with Calvin when Henry agrees to be Jay’s temporary Dom. He agrees to help Jay learn that there can be pleasure not just pain and that he actually has control over a scene and if it isn’t what he wants then he is able to actually stop it. It’s hard to see the more self-assured business man that we saw in previous books in this broken childlike individual. I loved seeing the internal struggle with Henry, who is such a strong Dom who knows exactly what he wants, second guessing himself. He knew from the very beginning that he wanted Jay but tried to talk himself into believing this was only going to be temporary. Loved seeing a little of Emily and Victor, they made such a sweet loving couple. I would have liked to see a little more of them after Henry agreed that he would become Jay’s permanent Dom and suggested a contract. Maybe bringing them up to when Alice moved in but I guess that would have been to long for just one book. There is no penetration in this book and I kinda missed that connect between the two. I can’t wait for the next book.

I picked this book because of the title and the fact it was m/m and I was so not disappointed. Omg this book is awesome!! It was a different feel from the usual Dom/sub book and that made me really happy. The relationship between the two main characters was really interesting. The mentoring of Jay by Henry was selfless and showed a great heart in him. I just loved that he was willing to put Jays needs before his own, show him the right path. This book has made me look at other books by M.Q Barber and I will be reading them soon.
Another great book in this series, made me want to go back and start from the beginning. This was especially good because we get to see how Henry and Jay came to be before the addition of Alice. This has quickly become one of my favorite series and I hope there is lots more of Henry, Jay and Alice in the future.
This is billed as the fourth book in the series but it is in fact the prelude and tells the incredible, and extremely touching, story of Henry and Jay. This is one of those gems, first written around ten years ago, that really need revisiting. It's so achingly beautiful you will want a Henry all to yourself.
Here, Henry, rescues Jay from a violent Dom and nurtures his recovery with the patience of a fatherly teacher. Jay is a praise junkie, who also comes across as either slightly autistic or having a Peter Pan syndrome. He is the ultimate child in a man's body needing, more than anything, a loving and devout teacher or master. And Henry, a caring, trained Dom provides just what Jay needs to learn to trust again. Of course this isn't easy. Jay is deeply traumatised and as you'd expect, emotions run high. However, Henry finds that what was to be a temporary retraining situation becomes a full blown effort in trying to stop himself falling in love. And yes, though it's not written in their relationship, their interactions do have DD/lb overtones, or that could be just the way my smutty mind works!! That said, the love and tenderness they share will break your heart!
Anyway, I'm so taken by the writing, the insightfulness, the 2MMCs, and the plot that I'm going to buy the rest of the Neighborly Affection series. The fact Henry and Jay introduce a woman into their relationship will make for more interesting reading.
This is BDSM as it should be written. This is the handle not the whip, the love not the pain, the power exchange truly at work. So, if you want to understand dominance and submission, and especially what it means to be a submissive, then it looks like this series is for you. Can't recommend enough!
Becoming His Master by M.Q. Barber is the fourth book in the Neighborly Series. I was not lost starting out with this book. I do however want to go back and read what I missed. This book is amazingly well done. I loved the characters and the intense connection they have. Henry just wants to relax. He has had enough things go wrong in his life. He is a wounded soul with a light touch. Jay has a tendency to not know where his limits are. But when he is bloodied, beaten, screaming his safe words, the club owners know he needs a Dominate to guide him. One that will not take advantage but will see him through, so he can find himself. This one is intense both men come into this relationship for vastly different reasons an find pieces of themselves in the other man. This is an intense unforgettable read.
I have read this book several times and can't put it down once I start.
The first time was in order of the series as #4 because I can't stand reading books out of order but this book is actually a prequel and so the next time I read it before the others and I prefer it that way when reading it with the series. This last time I read the book was by itself and it works quite well that way too (at least for me).
I think I am drawn to this story more than the others of the series because it is from Henry's point of view and he is my favorite character. I love the way he talks and dresses and how he lovingly takes care of his partners. We get a window into his thoughts and get to know him and Jay a little more closely. I only wish we got more time with Jay and Henry. I just love their connection.
REREAD 2022 - Nearly 7 years later I'm rereading this series, since M.Q. Barber has added a new novel to this lovely series. After rereading the series again, this book I enjoyed much more than the first read. First this book is told from Henry's point of view, so very interesting to hear and see his emotions and thoughts. Also to better understand Jay's core desire to serve and bring pleasure to those he loves. You understand how the relationship of Jay and Henry began, and the history behind Jay becoming a submissive and the traumatic event he endured early in his journey. Also seeing more of Henry's history with Victor and Emma is very helpful to understand the dynamic of Henry and the Club. Love this series!
This was the fourth book in a series, but it was actually a backstory that takes place before book 1 of that series. The rest of the series is a BDSM trio romance with two males and a female. In this book we saw how the two men met.
I won't be reading any of the rest of the series, as threesome smut isn't my thing, but this book was enjoyable. It was a really good intro to how a BDSM club works, as we follow Henry as he coaches a newbie in the life. Since he's teaching, the audience also is learning. It was very approachable in that regard.
There was no plot other than the romance, though, to be clear. Everything we saw basically took place at the club, and their lives outside of it we only heard about and only sparingly.
